ALiARMING RAILWAY COLLISION. A train to Ventnor and Ryde ran into a siding on Tuesday at Brading station, through the points being wrongly fixed, and collided violently with a coal store. Several carriages were damaged, Seven passengers were injured.

FAILURE OF A LIVERPOOL BANKING FIRM. A Liverpool telegram states that Messrs. J. Reis and Co., bankers and merchants, Liverpool, have suspended payment. A circular was sent to their oreditors on Tuesday, and a meeting has been called for the 2nd prox. Severe losses, non- receipt of remittances from abroad, and othei causes, are stated as the reason for the suspension. No mention is made of the assets or liabilities.

BURNING A WIFE WITH A RED HOT POKER. At the Liverpool Police Court, on Tuesday, an old man named Roberts was charged with burn- ing his wife with a red hot poker and inflicting 19 wounds on her body. Both appear to have been drunk and quarrelling at the time. The woman went to the hospital and said the injuries had been inflicted by her husband. She lies in a critical condition. A poker with human flesh adhering was found in the cistern. The prisoner was remanded.

ALARMING COLLISION ON THE MERSEY. About half-past seven o'clock on Tuesday morn- ing, an alarming collision occurred between the White Star mail steamer Baltic and the Dublin steamer Longford on the Mersey. The Longford was turning in the river to go to her moorings at the landing stage, when she was carried broadside on to the bow of the Baltic, which lay at anchor. The stem of the Baltic was seriousiy damaged, while the side of the Longford was torn open for a considerable distance. The passengers on the latter steamer became intensely excited and screamed loudly, the commotion on board draw- ing attention from the landing stage and a number of steam tugs. Some of the latter went to the assistance of the Dublin steamer, which was rapidly sinking, and succeeded in towing her to Princess Pier bead before she went down. The water being shallow at that point, she sank only to the gunwale. The passengers, some two hundred in number, were saved, as were a number of cattle, but the whole of the cargo was sub- merged. The Baltic, which was to have sailed on Tuesday for New York, put into Birkenhead Docks for repairs.

The quantity of starch in the other samples varied between 67 and 80 per cent., so that allowing for sugar, there was not in any of them more than 10 per cent. of cocoa. THE MIDLAND AND GREAT EASTERN RAILWAYS. The Railway Service Gazette is informed that an amalgamation is contemplated between the Midland ahd Great Eastern Railways, and be- j lieves that one of the principal results of the amalgamation will be the extension of the Great Eastern to the great manufacturing districti beyond the Humber.

SERIOUS ACCIDENT TO MR. BASS, M.P. Whilst Mr. M. T. Bass, M.P. for Derby, was •walking to the lawn tennis green at his shooting lodge, the Tulchan, Morayshire, on. Monday, hia foot slipped and he fell heavily, severely bruising bis head. The walks surrounding the tennis green are of concrete, and consequently Mr. Basa was rather severely bruised. Dr. Barclay wag immediately sent for from Grantown; he found that Mr. Bass' shoulder was dislocated, and it is feared that some bones may be broken.

RAILWAY FATALITIES. On Monday afternoon Dr. Gilbertson, deputy coroner, held an inquest at the North Western Hotel, Preston, on the body of Dennis Gettou, aged 23 years, who was run over on Sunday morning. The deceased was employed as a. labourer on the North Union Railway, and was proving the rails at Penwortham with a spirit level, when he was caught by an engine and killed on the spot. Verdict, "Accidental death." On Monday morning, about half-past eight, Joseph Barton, aged 23 years, chief delivery clerk at the East Lancashire Railway goods station, Preston, was leaving his home at Orrel, near Wigan, on his way to work at Preston, and when stepping on to a pilot engine at Orrell, his foot ¡ slipped, he fell upon the rails, and the engine passed over him. He died in fifteen minutan afterwards. The deceased had just returned from a week's holiday. An inquest was held on Monday on the wife of a plumber named Perfect. She was killed on getting out of a train at Stratford. The evidence tended to show that her husband was handing her out, the train having stopped, when it suddenly started on again, without any signal, and that. she fell between the platform and the train, and received such injuries as proved fatal. The jury decided that the death was accidental, through a mistake by the driver, and they expressed an opinion that the rules for signalling trains should be more rigidly enforced.

COLOGNE CATHEDRAL. The citizens of Cologne had a right to rejoice on Saturday. Rarely, if ever, has history been ablE) to record such a triumph of devotion and persis- tency as the completion of the vast Rhenish Ca- thedral. Europe is rich in ecclesiastical edifices, and very many of them have taken age. in building. Their glory is thu.t they have grown, as a tree grows, gradually into the perfection of their proportions and beamy. In the variety which tha piety oc one generation has engrafted on the piety of its predecessor resides often much of their charm. But for the most part the lnediaival church has been the fruit of the zeal of successive churchmen. Choir, and transept, and tower, and chapter house bear, each in its differing graces, the one impress of clerical pride, taste, or sanctity. Cologne Cathedral exceeds in its period of growth all other European Minsters. None can boast like it a youth of six centuries. The city which it glorifies has been celebrated for its piety, and something more, in the past; it is celebrated for the same qualities still. To strangers and. visitors Cologne is identified with ecclesiastical dominion and ecclesiastical magnificence. Cologne is to them the city of mitred electors and of princes of the Church; Cologne Cathedral is a visible sign of the pomp and wealth and undying memory of Romish Churchmen. In reality, the last stones- set upon the two towers on Saturday crowned the enterprise, not so much of the Church of Rome, or the Church of Cologne, as of a municipality founded by the Caesars.—Times.
