e^———m Jheir Hinds I was kicked, bit don t know which of th wo kicked me from the violence received I suBtained Arises upon my legs, and I was laid up in consequence '*til Wednesday last; when I found the defendants were w much for me, I ran away for the parish constable; *hey followed me, and when opposite my lodgings I rushed In George White struck the door several times with a piece of iron which he had in his hand I succeeded in keeping them back for about ten minutes or a quarter of an hour when Rachael Jones, with whom I lodge, called oat of her window, asking the defendants if they intended to kill me.—Corroborative evidence having been adduced, Mr. Lewis addreued the Bench on behalf of the defen- dants, subsequently calling Mary Davies, who deposed I am the wife of Mr William Davies, of Mertbyr on Saturday night, P.C. John Lewis came into the Crown Inn, Llangattock we were at supper at the time he said « is it not time to shut up," and we said it was °^ ^lf past twelve he then sat down on the settle, aiad Mrs. Be-'S asked hini if he would take a mouthful of bread and ebiese he said no, thank you, I have had supper at the Balls f he then began to catch hold of us and toss us about he remained in the house for a long timo, and we iould not get any quiet for him when Rees came in, he (Lewis) tried to burry me out of the back door or into the parlour-I don't know which while be was doing so, I put my foot against a step, and I fell against the bannister; I fainted away, and upon coming to myself, Mrs Lewis was requesting Lewis to go out of the bouse; Lewis said to Rees, "if you are a man come out and stand me Lewis struck Rees and fell upon him George White drew Lewis off Rees and then Lewis ran up the street; White and Rees followed him; I saw no more.-Several questions were here put to the witness, but she gave an evasive and un- intelligible answer.—Superintendent Evans (tothe Bench): Shall I prove that Lewis was not in the Bells on the evening in q; estion?—The Bench No; we don't believe the evidence ct this woman, MaiyDavies.—Rachel Jones The defendants have done a deal of damage to my door. -The Bench We shall allow 10s. for the damage done to the door. We have agreed to commit you, Rees, and you will Lave to pay the costs between you. Rees Rees will have to pay B10 fine, and George White, of whom we have a good character, will be fined £2, In default of paying this fine, Rees Rees will have to go to gaol for two months' hard labour, and George White one month We consider it a very bad case, and the defence you have endeavoured to set up makes it much worse. The question is —whether you have not exposed yourselves to be indicted for conspiracy in getting up such a defence, and then libelling the police. And that woman, Mary Davies, is certainly liable to be indicted for perjury. In the case of the damage to the door, you will also have to pay the expenses between you.
