TO CORRESPONDENTS. We have received a farther communication from Messrs. J. Williams and Samuel Lloyd, with regard to the question of the Chairmanship at Mr. Frost's lectures. The subject is certainly not of sufficient interest to war rant further discussion. Messrs. Williams and Lloyd have already denied the statements of the Mayor's first letter, and given their version of the alleged facts in the MERLIN: the Mayor has emphatically contra dieted it, as to the principal points and the letter we bave now received as emphatically impugns tbe Mayor's veracity. HMtt. NEWPORT, SATURDAY, OCT. 17,1857. THE worst of the hurricane would seem to have blown over the plains of Hindostaa. It has committed fearful ravages in its progress- levelled many a landmark-destroyed many a homestead—crushed out many a life-øpread. the wildest of desolations-and at one time threatened to sweep all traces of civilisation before it. But the bow is now in the heavens, the tempest is breaking, and dense clouds no more shut out all view of the calm, spirit- stirring azure. Better days. thank God, are before us and if we do not profit by the stem and terrible lessons of the past and present, woe to us as a nation and a people. England has been put upon its trial for life or death in India, and she has been only saved by the bold front of the heroic bands that stood there to uphold her fortunes and vindicate her name. Were they lukewarm or timid—had panic seized them-had they not proved, in their glorious resistance, that to be undaunted is to be wise, all would have been for the time lost- for all had been perilled both Bombay and Ma- dras would have been in flames, the mutinous spirit general, and these Isles would have had to gird themselves for a conflict scarcely less in magnitude and might than Rome armed her- self for, when she saw Cannse lost-or the Social War approaching her gates. Our small detachments of soldiers-dispersed over a region half the size of Europe—encompassed round about with merciless hordes of barbarians. armed after the most approved fashion of mo- dern warfare, flaunting in the Queen's uniform, and trampling the Queen's standards-had nothing left them but literally to live to fight and fight to live; and nobly they have kept their own in face of odds that would have startled and appalled the stoutest heart in those days which historians and romance writers call the days of chivalry and mailed combat. They have bravely done their part; the rebel Sepoy, in the greatness of his guilt and force, has shrank before them, and has found himself always worsted when he came, backed with overwhelming numbers, to do battle with the few, the firm, the disciplined European force. For three months has the unequal contest lasted, and not only has the high reputation of the British soldier been maintained, but the country-if it has to mourn its murdered sub- jects, has to deplore no Pavia or battle-field lost. "We have lost all," said Francis the First, "but our honour.' We have gained much-with an empire in arms against us— with, we need not add, no blot on our military escutcheon. If, then, so much has been done when we stood few, but fearless, what shall we not effect when an army, greater than crushed Napoleon and his great and gallant force at Waterloo, marches in its might, with all its C5 glorious prestige round it, on Delhi, and to the permanent occupation of Oude? The result » will not be for a moment doubtful, and a terrible retribution will overtake the rebels. In the meantime, we have much to congratulate our readers upon since we last addressed them on the state of affairs in the East. Lucknow and its intrepid defenders have shown that the Castle's strength Laughs the siege to scorn." The enemy has been repulsed and baffled, and hope was strong that the garrison could beat back every attempt made upon its defenoes till succour arrived, which, we learn, could not be much longer delayed, as an imposing force was soon to march from Cawnpore to its relief. Havelock, like Massena, in the early days of French prowess—the cherished child of vic- tory"—was still on his triumphal course, adding success to success. He came up with a large force of the Sepoys, about 12 mile3 from Cawn- pore, on the 12th August, and totally defeated them, with the capture of two guns, and many killed. General Outram bad reached Allahabad with a strong body, and his next start would be for Cawnpore, where he expected to form a. junction with General Havelock, and from thence Lucknow was to be the point of ap- proach. The fate of Delhi may be fairly pre- dicted to be sealed by this time. The assault was postponed, and wisely postponed, until not a few thousand men, but an ARMY was before it, to pass its walls, and strike a blow that India. would stagger and reel under. It would never have done to have carried on a little war" there. Delhi bears a charmed and a hallowed name among Mohamedans. It was the seat of empire when they ruled over all, and where they to this day declare the crescent never, paled before the cross, and where certainly w never entirely assumed full and complete sovereignty; for, as if afraid of a phantom power, we left there a Mogul to sit with all but Imperial sway, with his ministers, his harems, his power of life and death over his immediate. followers, and his exchequer filled with what he called an English subsidy-a Brummagem Stamboul in the midst of the greatest posses- sion of our Crown! Were we beaten on this ground, it would have been declared to have been the work of the Prophet himselfj and the fanaticism of every Mohamedan in India would be at once appealed to. We must prostrate and for ever, Mohamedan power and Mohamedan hope, in the very view of the Musnnd and if gui%, Wg Sultan, m the view of thousands of our revolted subjects. Our siege train was to be before Delhi on the 3rd of September, when final and decisive measures were to be at once taken. An attempt had been made to inter- cept some of our guns, but it was unsuccessful, and the assailants suffered a great loss-thir4 teen of their guns fell into our hands. This last effort must show them how desperate is their position, and how awful the fate that awaits them. That they will fight with desperation there can be little doubt; and we must prepare to hear that our loss has been severe; but Delhi once in our hands, the mutiny will be crushed in its stronghold, and ""ir? ooI"mns will do the rest. have to be done to re-organise the country, to bring order out of chaos and- 00 place our rule upon a firm, just, and stable. ooting. I he Legislature will have to do much, Bind the sword, if even in its scabbard, will* have to be there. India can never be left, at least, for years to come, without a British army equal to that which lately left our shores for <, its re-conquest.
