THE DEARTH OF SHIPPING IN IRELAND. DUBLIN.—The measure introduced by Government in the Houte of Commons, and which thus opportunely com- pletes the great commercial reforms of 1846, will no doubt speedily provide a remedy for the grievance embodied in the following statement which appears in a Dundalk paper. It is almost needless to remark that similar complaints come from all the seaport towns in Ireland, as well as in the sister countries :— The number of coal-laden vessels which have entered the port of Newry for some time past, has been unusually small, and the consequence has been, that a further advance of Is. per ton in the prices of every description of coal has taken place. The inconvenience and loss resulting from the want of a sufficient number of vessels for this trade, has long been a source of complaint to the inhabitants, and especially to those of the lower and middle classes of this town and its neighbourhood and the increase now made, together with the almost famine prices of every kind of provisions, has rendered their position during the winter, doubly embar- rassing. It is hoped that the measure about to come under the consideration of the Legislature for the purpose of allowing the vessels of other and friendly nations to engage in this trade will, in some measure, remedy the defect." With regard to the complaint of famine prices," alluded to in the foregoing, it is a curious fact that, notwithstanding the apparent advent of a general war, the provision and grain markets show a downward tendency, the last week's rates being upon the whole below the current prices previous to the assembling of Parliament. In Galway, the 41b. loaf has been reduced Id., and a corresponding decrease is anticipated in all kinds of breadstuffs. Altogether, the corn trade has been dull, and from all the provincial markets the quota- tions are reported as somewhat lower.
