"DOMESTtC NEWS. .0- There are only two instances of Quakers having been ^turned to Parliament, and it is remaikable that one was for the county, and the other for the city of Durham. J I^easfc, o( Darlington, represented the southern division of the county after the passing of the Reform Bill, and Jol)tt Bright, of Rochdale, has now been returned for the c«y. WILL OF JAMES WOOD, ESQ —After several years' litigation, the will and codicils of James Wood Esq., the late wealthy banker and draper of Gloucester, have been proved in Doctors' Commons. He gives to the corpora- tion of Gloucester, £ 60,000, to Mr. Philpots, fSO.OOO, to Mrs. Goodlake, f20,000 to Mr. Council £ 10,000, to Mr. Hetps.GSO.OOO, to Mr. Smith £ 20,000, to Mr. Cleveland ^14,000, and to ihe family of the latter gentleman £ 6,000; and the residue ot property, estimated at about X.500,000, to his executors. The property has been sworn under • £ 900,000, and the probate bears a stamp of £ l2,000. The executors named are Alderman Wood, John Chadborn, tsq. (who committed suicide some lime back under very ,extraordinary circumstances,) Jacob Osborn, Esq., and John Surnam, Esq. The charges of three proctors en- gaged in the suit relative to the will amount to £ l7,536 3s 2 -1'he Britannia. At the last sitting of the Academy of Sciences, a very curious paper was received and read from M. Mandel "willed Microscopic investigations as to the Nature of 'he tartar and mucous covering the Tongue and Teeth." If wa, are to believe M. Mandal's microscope, the human mouth is a perfect cemetery, where millions of infusoria; find their catacombs. Leuverknoux had already told us that the human mouth was peopled with infusory animals and that the mucous secretions on its surface set ved as their ocean; but it remained tor M. Mandel to discover that the tarlar which covers the teeth is formed of the mountains of 'he dead of these inhabitants of this ocean. M. Mandel fcnows not to what cause to attribute the origin of these ftiicroscopic animals, but he has ascertained, he says, that 'hey are most numerous in person* who live on spare diet, and that they are instantly killed by ardent spirits. THE GARTER —It is xmderstood that the blue ribbon of the order of the Garter, vacant by the death of the Duke Of Dorset, is to 'Oo conferred on the Marquis of Abercom. His Roy-.t Highness the Prince Alexander of Orange, *eeond s<jn of the King of Holland, arrived at Mivart's on Sunday, at three o'clock, from the Hague. We understand that her Majesty and Prince Albert, previous to their departure tor Windsor, presented Viscount Melbourne with their portraits superbly painted. The preliminaries of a mamai^e are arranged between Lady Evelyn Leveson Gower, second daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland, and Lord Blantyre. By one of the clauses of the new-bill for the regula- tion of stage-coaches, oinnibusses. cabs, &c., the drivers And conductors are forbidden to smoke while on duty. DEPARTURE OF THE HIBERNIA AND GREAT WESTERN. —Liverpool Saturday,-These important ships left this Port to-day and yesterday. The royal mail steam ship Hibernia. Captain Judkins, sailed on Friday afternoon "ith the mails for the United States and Canada, and *bout 100 passengers; and the Gieat Western, Captain Hoskin, this afternoon, with 120 passengers. The Ministerial proposition tor paying the opium- dealers a million less than the cost price of their villanous Commodity, has proved anything but an anodyne to those respectable gentry. They not only "slng out" against the "robbery" themselves, but have induced some of the fading journals to join in the "cry." They find it conve- nient to forget the share they have had in poisoning the phinese, or to say the least, in putting the means of poison into their hands. Their diny profit was the only object tbey had in view; they speculate in poison, and their taseally drug having been destroyed by the order of the Justly.mdignant Biother of the Sun and Moon, they have lht impudence to expect to be reimbursed for the loss incurred by such an iniquitous traffic. They will just get tnillion and half more than they have any just title to- being the amount which the Government has agreed lo pay them. To be sure the money has been a ready squeezed" out of the Chinese, who are the really ill-used Parties, as they never even swallowed or smoked the opium they had to pay for so dearly.
CRIMES AND CASUALTIES .
CRIMES AND CASUALTIES MINE ACCIDENTS. TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF THE PENDLETON COLLIERY. most lamentable occurrence took place on the even "IR of Tuesday the 1st instant, at this colliery, the P'operty of Mr. Fitzgerald, situate in the township of **endleton, near Manchester. The coal-pit in question is -460 yards deep, down two perpendicular shafts, and a further depth of seventy yards down an inclined plane, ""hich was worked by an underground engine of 40 horse- Power in add-on to theoneat the surface. It is situaled on "he no'rth.eastern slope of the Manchester coal basin and higher up are other collieries on the same »eanJ»iMa title of sinking the pit it was found nec*ssary}° ,ub the sides of the shaft with iron casing. Instead of using ^rbs complete for the occasion, a mistaken economy, as it has unfortunately turned out, induced the proprietors to \lse Some old metal plates, the rasing thus being formed ?• segments, some of a circle of ten feet, and some of e.gh ffcet diameter, which, of course, however well fastened V'her, would no. form a circle. From appearances in Parts of the casing for several weeks past, Mr. 1 lizgera thought it advisable to strengthen the sh&ft with new Castings, and the work was proceeding, when on Monday last, they found the pressure increasing to an extent ^hich became almost alarming dispatches were sent off to Bolton to expedite the castings, but all further tabour vain; the water increased in rapidity;rushing m wi °»erwhelming force, crushing the old curb-p ates in o ?hape|ess masses> an(j carrying everything be ore i *ve not heard that any lives have been lost, but by this Calamity the colliery, it is feared is irrecoverably lost, with he engine at the bottom of the shaft (which was nearly ??*), and all the underground works and materials. ^Fitzgerald's loss is estimated at £50,000, and, what is melancholy in this disaster is, that 000 men are ,h'°wn out of employment, to add to the fearful distress *l*ady existing in th's district. irom one large coal- P" at Swinton, and another on the same seam, being in^ ti'>d*ted, the water was expected, and eve.y means tried ^derthe circumstances to keep it under, but it is now this property is totally irrecoverable.rom a °rre;-pondenl oi the Mining Journal. o BERRY.H[LL-COLUERY .-Fenton Park Company. n Wednesday evening, about six o'clock, the colliers Proceeded as usual, to their work three of the men de- murred at descending the pit, saying there was enough coal gOt already, but were afterwards persuaded to proceed, :hough, from the reluctance they displayed, it seemed as if they had a presentiment of their shocking fate. R. Daw- SOli, F. Malbourn, and J. Roberts, got into the skip, with the overlooker On nearly reaching the bottom, by some ^ordinary means, ihe engine was reversed, when they instantly raised with such fri.htlul rapidity that when th« skip struck the pulley roller, they were ejected from it bom the mouth of a cannon, and their mutilated re- nins were picked up forty yards from e 8' ,f Aching inquiry must be ins.ituied into tins dreadful a'r, as the reversal of ihe engine at that time was roos J^alled for. Three of the men have left large families. fining Journal. 1 ANOTHER CAUTION TO MINERS -On the 1st instant, s'ac Humby dtscended a mine near Holbeck, for the Purpose of setting the shot to blast; a safety lamp was °*ered after him in a corve, when he most carelessly re- ^ed the wire gauze, and there being just sufficient light ^'hutretted hydrogen to form an explosive mixture, it took .*» and so severely burnt him that he died the next raor- tllOg. This is another instance of the careless habits of "rne of these men with regard to the safety lamp. Why Jr« ^ey not compelled by regulations or fines to use the Sp in a proper manner? hundreds of lives would then gaved annually.

The paint combines strength with economy. It is sent out in casks, ground tcith driert ready for use, (by the addition of about two gallons of oil to the cwt.) at 28s. It therefore requires no subsequent preparation, which adds so much to the expense of the paints generally used. It may be calculated that one third will be saved by the use of this paint as compared with white lead. The Patent Stucco Paint Cement, for covering Walls of Houses, &c., is sent out in casks at 14s. 6d. per cwt. with par- ticular directions for its use. The 0uid Cement is mixed with about three times its measure of sand, reducing the price to little moie than 3s. 6d. per cwt. This work. a TENTH edition of which is now presented to the public-ten thousand copies have been exhausted since its- first appearance-bas been very much impioved and enlarged by th addition of a more extended and clear detail of general princi- ples, as also by the insertion of several new and highly interest- ing cases. The numberless instances daily occurring, wherein a flections of the lungs, putting on all the outward appearances of consumption, which, however, when traced to their source, are found to result from certain baneful habits, fully prove that the principle of the division of labour is nowhere more applica- ble than in medical practice. We feel no hesitation in saying, that there is no member of society by wbom the book will not be found useful, whether such person hold the relation of a parent, a preceptor, or a clergyman. -SlIn. Messrs. Curtis's work, called MANHOOD, is one of the few books now coming before the public on such a subject, which can lay claim to the oharacter of being strictly profes- sional, at the same time that it is fully intelligible to all who read it. The moral and medical precepts given ia render it invaluable."—Magnet. In I The perusal of Messrs. Curtis's book, entitled MANHOOD, bas really astonished us by developing a series of maladies, the never-failing consequence of the vicious habit of which it treats. The clear connexion pointed out between the assigned cause and the effects is perceptible to every capacity."—Age. "This is a work that we fear there exists too much need for, to cause as to hesitate to recommend it for general perusal. Every branch,of those frightful maladies, whether the result of immoral habits or secret vices, is here succinctly treated, and, divested of all medical technicality, plain and "easy directions are given for the best mode to be pursued in all cases, however complicated or apparently hopeless. To the married, tis wen as the unmarried, this little work alike affords consolation and cure in peculiar cases, and we are doinir service to society in recommending it to general notice." Essex and Berts Mercwy ••The scientific views taken hy the authors, of the source and origin of many of the most distressing effects of certain depraved habits, fully establish their claim to the character of experienced surgeons; and the result of our csrelul per«sa, the work has been to impress us with A thorongh those ,he talent and skill of the author,, and to satisfy « tjat those intrusted with the care of youth are not a little indebted 10 tbem for furnishing them with a means of preyentme most frightful maladies to which flesh is heir. ^'« i) ,h Messrs. AT present the popular opinion is, that the natural duration of life is 70 years, but this is contrary to both sacred and profane history. 1 his opinion is, no doubt, founded on a mis. understanding of tae passage of the 90th Psalm, where it is indeed stated," that the days of our years are threescore years and ten, and if, by reason of strength, they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow." Now, it must be re- membered, -,hat ibis Psalm is ascribed to Moses, and that he is not speaking of the lives of men in general, but of what was occurring among the Israelites in the wilderness. Tbey died not a natural death, but were cut off for their sin and nnbelief by judicial dispeusauons. The clevei Dr. Farre maintains that 120 is the last grant of God to jtpan, and quotes the sivh chapter of Genesis, and the third vefse, where it is written, My spirit shall not always strive witb man, for that he also is flesh yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty yeais." Now, we find this expressed intention on the part of God gradually carried into effect—the principal of vitality appearing to become weaker until the close of the era in which the postdiluvian patriarchs flourished when although several centuries had elapsed since the deluge, we find the 120 years wt-re about the average of human existence Supposing then, that the theory of long life is well sustained, the quesiion naturally is suggested, how are we to attain what is so desirable A wise general on the eve of liatile make* a proper disposition of his forces beforehand, and does not wiit till the enemy has made an attack, and thus, by forethought and due prepar-ttion, reasonably expects a victory: — thus, be who has a desire to attain a healthy, and consequently, happy old age, does not indolently wail for the attack 01 the enemy, which is sickness, but is constantly on his guard against his insidious apptoacLes, by paying proper atteniion to the state of his health. Many would fain occasionally use medicine to asssiM nature in her operations but, like a mrriner at sea without bis compass, knowing not where to steer, they Hrst try ibis an<1 lien that, and meet with nothing but disappointment; to i'h<me how welcome must be the important tact, that ME UIClN E is all that is reqlltrdd, tbe fine tonic properties it con, tains invariably restores the stomach to a healthy longing foi food; or. in other words, it produoes a good appetite, so much envied, but so seldom enjoyed by the invalid; the gentle utiinu- laiing powers it possesses assist the stomach to properly digeai the food it receives; the balsamic powers it bestows on the svstem pioduces that delightful feeling of good spirits so ven desirable, and dinposes both mind and body to healthy exercis# everything under its influence soon wears a joyous aspect, ami the varied duties of life are performed witli pleasure. It, in addition, contains a fine sedative quality, and, instead of Ion* and weary nights, gives sound aud refreshinn sleep, ff ult stomach and bowels lequire it, it acts as the mildest and HIOM agreeable purgative, and by its cleansing powers totally eradi cates a redundancy of bile, and completely removes all obstruc- tions of the intestinal oanal. To hove produced a medicine so benign and mild in its operation and effects, and yet so effectual in searching out aud curing disease of however long standing, exhibits, on the pait of Old Parr, deep research and a th.m,ngll knowledge of his subject. Those who have been the instru ments of restoring this long lost seoret to the world teel confi- dent, when they make the assertion, that none need despair, thai if only a fair trial be given, the result will be a restoration to health and happiness. Thus shall their humble labours merit praise, And future Parrs be blessed with honnnr'd days." The following letter received by one of the proprietors from the Rev. D. HAIIRISON, Whitstable, near Canterbury, is a fur. ther proof of their efficacy in cases of Indigestion, Liver and Stomach Complaint, &c., &c. Whitstable, Sept. 5, 1842, My Dear Friend,—I received tbe box of PARR s LIFE PILLS you so kindly sent me, for which I beg you to accept my best thanks. They could not have cime more opportunely, as I was suffering considerably from indigestion at the time. I immedi- ately commenced taking the pills, and found great benefit in a few days. I have taken them subsequently, with the same ef. feet, which induces me to believe that they aie an exceedingly beneficial remedy in indigestion. A friend of mine has found them of great utility in an obstinate liver complaint. If my re- commendation can be of any service you are at liberty to use it as you please.—1 am, my dear f/iend, yours, very truly, DAVID HARRISON. EXTRAORDINARY CURE OF RHEUMATISM. The following letter will be read with interest, as it contains a statementol another recent cure of Chronic Uteumalism. solely from the use of the popular medicine, PARR'S LIFE PILLS. It will be seen that Mr. Hugh Lewis, of Morpoeth Towyn, Merionethshire, North Wales, his to enrol his name among the list cf testimonials of cures by Parr's Life Pills. letter re- lating the case is from his brother Mr. Lewis Lewis, of the same place. Morpoeth Towyn, NorthWales, Merionethshire, July 4,1843 Gentlemen-I have much pleasure in stating to you the wonderful cure of my brother, by your efficacious medicine, as it must be nearly as gratifying to your.elves to hear of the im- mense good Parr's Life Pills are doing in Wales. My brothei had been many yearsaffiicled with rheumatism, which frequently confined him to his bed, and the last attack was severe he could not move in bed, and the pain was most excruciating and, although he had been under the care of one of the best medical gentlemen in the county, and had administered to him various applications, both external and internal, without afford- ing him any benefit; as a last resource he was induced to try the effect of Parr's famous remedy, and now though he has only consumed one half of a I Is. packet, he ispel-fectiq cured.—I am, gentlemen, yours gratefully, LEWIS LEWIS. This famous remedy has been established by undoubted proof, of its efficacy, and by a mass of evidence and testimonials from respectable persons, which no other medicine ever yet culled forth. Hence a host of spurious imitators, who reckless of character or consequences, seek to injure its fair fame by vending DANGEHOUS SUBSTITUTES for tbe genuine medicine. To prevent a continuance of this injury to public health, the pro- prietors spare neither means nor exertion in exposing the base conduct of such parties but some of these reckless speclllatols still continue their injurious tramc; and by so doing, destroy the remedial character of the genuine medicine. To prevent such serious wrong being continued, the proprieiors of PAKR'S 1JFE PILLS therefoie urge upon all purchasers of this singularly ellicacious medicine, the necessity of strict attention being given to the following CAUTION. fbe words "PARR'S LIFE PILLS are engraved in the Government Stamp, in while letters OIl a red ground and tit- lacbed to every box of the Genuine Medicine.
