J I LATEST NOVELTIES I •J* in the World of Dress. m mm m iiig; One does. not wish to ea.rn a reputation for oontribuung to the puerilities that have eurned this undesirable distinction for the holiday season, when monster eggs, mammoth gooseberries, sea serpents, a.nd ot.iier wonders of the aniiciate and vegetable kingdoms invariably make their appearance (or are said to do so), probably because of the deart,h of anything more important to write about. 'ihat journalists otten do find this season barren of topics likely to interest, the general reader ds certain, unless, indeed, tnere is something unusually sensational to be -rccome(I-the arrest of a noted criminal, an important complication or situation in political affairs, or some great scientific discovery to be commented upon. Apart from these there is a flatness a,tK>ut things in general and an absorbing interest in nothing much but holiday-making and holiday-keep- ing. StiLl, there are small every-day matters to which some attention must be given. As a rule, change of air, ol scene, and sea bathing do materially sharpen the appetite, so that the caterer for tne family has certain duties to perform—stores to get in, a menu to be formulated, and so on. This is not invariably an easy task when from home, all the appliances and resources at command there being absent. Then the care cf the complexion is of impoi-tance, and it is certain that many women who are by no means inordinately vain of their looks find that more attention than usual must be paid to the complexion. It is not merely a question of looks; it is likewise a question of personal comfort, for a face inflamed to the extent of peeling is a 6ouroe of pain and discomfort, which a little timely care usually prevents. The following "Oriental face cream is said to be most beneficial; it is an innocuous toilet prepara- tion which soothes and beautifies the akin if irritated by sun and wind or inflamed by driving; rapidly through the air in an a.uto- mobile, after which exposure the face is often red-dened, the skin feels stiff and strained, and altogether uncomfortable. Take eight grains of powdered gum tragacanth, half an ounce of pure glycerine, and nine ounces of triple rose water. Mix these ingredients together, and when thoroughly combined add half an ounce of triple extract of simple tinc- ture of pure benzoin. This makes an agree- able white emulsion, which leaves no creasy appearance on the skin. It may be applied also to the hands with great advantage. A dust of toilet powder is also recommended as a preventive of sunburn. It is best applied by means of chamois leather. Chooae a soft piece of it. dust it well with some good fine toilet powder, and pass the leather over the face, avoiding the eye-! brows. Then rub a piece of clean wash leather over the skin to remove all traces of powder. It is not sightly to disclose the georets of the toilet 'PY leaving a deposit of powder on the faoe or, indeed, on tne arons and hands. It cer- tainly improves the appearance of the akin. is an aid to comfort besides, and caii-not be properly termed "make up." One of the greatest charms of refined and highly-bred womanhood is theposseosim of a white and delicate hand. To quote from Sir Charles Boll's omce well-known Bridgwater treatise on that useful member: The hand distin- guishes man from the brute. Be carefui of it, for in polite society it is an index not oi.ly of the body but of the mind." Some nations seem to have akmost a monopoly of beauitifol hands and feet. Many highly endowed and spiritually-minded men, among whom may be mentioned Charles Wesley and Savonarola, are said to have had exquisitely- aha-ped hands. Professor -Roskin says that the hands are indicative of "fineness of race" in human beings, as are the slender ankles, arched necks, and sensitive nostrils of thoroughbred horses. It is certain that well- kept hands give an appearance of refinement most agreeable; the unpleasant effect of those which are neglected is apparent to all. No matter what the shape and size of the hands, if they are properly cared for they axe pleasant objects. Most of as have heard of the remark of a certain wit, made with" reepeot to the hands of a oareless acquaint- ance. He carries his lauded property in his finger nails." Happily, very few persons of any social position lay themselves open to caustic remarks of a like kind. Studied oare of the hands is the rule, and when well-manicured a final polish given to the na.ils adds greatly to their pleasing effect. Nail Polish. An excellent nail polish is made of four ounces of pure oxide of tin, one drachm of powdered carmine, eighty drops of oil of English lavender, and thirty drops of oil of rose geranium. Mix thoroughly. The oxide must be in finest powder. This polish is applied with a piece of soft chamois leather, and the nails are to be rubbed briskly with it. For individual use the proportions named might be much reduced. Once the hands have been properly manicured it is easy to keep them in good condition. Fiven if some housework has to be done, the nails may be kept trimmed and the skin at the root I of the nail preoSsoo. back, so that when the hands cannot be kept white there is evidence that care of them has not been neglected. It has been said that the degree of civilisa. tion might be known by the quantity of soap consumed. On this point there is a great variety of opinion, some holding that soap is an irritant, and others that it is not only harmless but necessary to health and cleanliness. That eminent skin specialist, Dr. Wilson's directions for washing the face lated to preserve the skin m health, to main- tain its complexion and tone and likewise prevent its falling into wrinkles; and adds that if any unpleasant sensations are felt after its use they may be immediately removed by rinsing the surface w^th water slightly acidulated with lemon juioe. Dr. Welion's directions for washing are: Have your basin a/bout two-thirds full of soft water. Dip >™r face jn the water, and then your hands Soap^them well, and pass them with gentle fnc the face. Having done this thoroughly, enp the face m the water a second time, and rinse it completely. You may add very much to the luxury of the latter operation by I having a second basin ready wi +h_t water for a final rinse. It is_ oertai soap and friction are preventives of «>me- done? (blackheads). Some persons are to rub their faces, and so the pores of the skin become relaxed, then clogg* muscles of the faoe al°o got relaxed, ivrinkles form. Soft Egg Curry. Melt one ounce and a half of butter in a pan with a small onion cut into rings; as the latter browns add a teaspoonful of curry powder and 1.00 same quantity of curry paste. Heat gradually, stirring occasionally for nearly an hour; then add three table- spoonfuls of milk and a good pinch of minced parsley. Stir for two or three minutes, then add the we'l-beaten yolks of two eggs. Just before serving add the egg whites beaten stiff. Chicken a la romaine. Out the bird into neat pieces, and sprinkle fr.em with chopped parsley, pepper, and salt. Make three tablespoonfuls of salad oil very hot in a frying pan. Put the chicken in it, with four thinly-sliced onions, and fry till a golden brown colour. This will take I about fifteen minutes. Stir in smoothly one- and-a-half ounce of flour, half a pint of tomato pulp, and half a pint of stock. Sim- mer until the chicken is tender; it will take about thirty minut Remove the chicken, Ac., from the pan. and keep it hot. Rub the sauce through a sieve. ffehea-t it, skin well, and add a table#poonf.«! of Tarragona vinegar. Arrange the chicken in a pile on a hot dish, put heaps of boiled macaroni round the edge of the dish, and a few stoned olives between. Serve very hot. Chicken en Casseroie. Cut the chicken into neat joints, lay them in a fireproof casserole pan with a little butter, or dripping, and a thinly-sliced onion. Cover the pan, and fry the contents over the fire till just brown; then add a pint of stock, a tomato, and two mushrooms. Season to taste, and simmer gently in the civen cr over the fire for one hour. Serve in the casserole. Any bird can be treated in this way, and will be found easy of diges- tion. It is also an excellent method of oook- ing steak or real. Mushroom Pudding. "The pearls of the field," as Soyer called mushrooms, are nearly always plentiful in autumn, and thJM which are grown in the green pastures are always more desirable than mushrooms grown on hotbeds, but these lat/ter the cook cannot do without when the short outdoor f-eason for mushrooms is over. For the pudding break into small pieces a pint of mushrooms, mince a quarter of a pound of unsmoked ham and two ounces of kidney suet. Add these to the mushrooms with half a pound of flour, a little chopped onion, parsley, and pepper and salt. Mix them thoroughly. Press these ingredients into a buttered basin, and, bake for about two hours in a hot oven, plaocingka cover over the pudding. The gravy from the mush- rooms ought to cause the mixture to adhere, so that the pudding can be turned out with- out breaking. Boiled Apple Amber. Ta,ke a quarter of a pound of suet, two ounces of flour, six ounces of breadcrumbs, twelve ounces of apple?, peeled, cored, and chopped, a grated lemon rind and the chopped pulp, a very little nutmeg, and two eggs. Shred the suet very fine, and mix it with the flour, rubbing all well till fine as before, then pat in the breadcrumbs and chopped apple Beat the eggs thoroughly, a<'d a good flavouring of lemon peel, also a grate of nutmeg; then mix in the dry in- gredients. Beat 'the whole well together, and pour it into a greased mould. Boil the pud- ding fast for three hours; turn it out, and servo with sweet apple sauce or any other sweet sauce round. Fowl a la Tartars. Boil a fowl until tender; when cold cut it I into nca-t joints, dip them in beaten egg, I and then in breadcrumbs, first nicely seasoned with minced lemon rind. pepper and salt. Fry the joints in boiling fat. Pile them on a hot dish, and serve with tartare sauce round. For this sauce put the yolks of two P.ggs, a dessertspoonful of vinegar, and a little salt in small saucepan. Whip them up with a. whisk to a cream; add two tablespoonfuls of good salad oil. and a small teaspoonful of mustard previously well mixed; add the smallest pinch of minced parsley and a dust of cayenne pepper. The oil must be put in drop by drop, or it will not mix properly To Bottle Green Peas for Wfnter Use. Put the shelled peas into a pan of boiling water; give them just one boil up. then drain peas in a colan.ler. When well drained turn them on to a cloth, put another cloth over, and dry them thoroughly. Fin-ally put them in wide-mouth bottles, which must be per- fectly sweet and dry; leave only room for clarified mutton suet to be poured over an inch thick. Cork the bottles, put resin or sealing wax over the corks, and keep the bottles in a dry cellar, or bury them in the, earth. When wanted for use boil the peas until tender with a small lump of butter, a spoonful of sugar, and a sprig of mint. The water must be cold when the peas are put in to be re-boiled. New Pudding. Take a quarter of a pound of sifted bread- crumbs. the sa.me quantity of chopped suet, three eggs, and some dried preserved ginger, which must be minced very fine. Mix these ingredients very thoroughly together; butter a pudding mould, put the mixture in it, and place a plate over the top. Steam the pudding for three hours; turn out when done. If a proper steamer is not used, the pudding basin should stand on a plate when in the saucepan. A Few Domestic Hints. I have been repeatedly asked for a pre- scription that will effectually vanish ants from cupboards infested with these insects. It is said the following method cannot fail- and I hope it is triie:-Take a pound of flowers of sulphur and two ounoes of potash. Heat these together until dissolved, and when cold infuse with water. Scrub floors and shelves raided by the ants with this fluid, and not cne will remain. So many agents prescribed to destroy or drive out ants are so powerfully scented that food placed SOME OF. Thomas. where such preventives have been used are impregnated with their odour, and some pea-sons find the smell of the remedy well nigh intolerable: To clear a house of beetles fill an old flour dredger with jowdered borax, and freely dust -the haunts of the beetles with it. A little borax blown into the holes by means of a pair of bellows fs also recommended. With a little perseverance the pests will soon be routed. Indelible Inkstains. These may be promptly removed from olothing by simply wetting the stain with a solution of bichromate of mercury. As this chemical is a rank ppison, it must be used with extreme caution. Stains of redaline ink may be removed by moistening the spot with strong alcohol acidulated with nitric I acid. Moth-ppsts. A small piece of. paPer saturated with tur- pentine And placed in a drawer for a single day, and two or three times a year, is an effectual deterrent. There is -a moth flake sold that is much commended, and the fact that it, is largely used by taxidermists speaks well for the efficacy of this moth preventive. Colours Destroyed. Colours destroyed by acids can usually be restored by an application of hartshorn. Flies. If grease is spilled on the kitchen range throw a handful of salt upon it. This will Prevent any disagreeable odour arising from "be grease Water Softener. A teaspoonful of borax added to a quart of water will make hard water soft, so that it can be used for washing the most delicate skins.

YOUNG DANIEL LAMBERT. LANCASHIRE RIVAL TO PECKHAM'S FAT BOY. The latest addition to the ranks of fat boy.s is Master John Norris, of the Lanca- shire village of Cms ton. Master John is only ten years old, but he already weighs list. 61b„ and has a chest measurement of 39Jin., a calf measurement of £ ver, ^m., and an arm muscle of ll&in. His is 4ft. 8in., and, as the song has it, he s a bonnie lad, and he's growing." He comes of a family of heavy-weight champions, and most of the family count for something in the balances, his father weighing 176t. 21b., and his grandmother topping this with a round 16 score, while a cousin, who stands 6ft. 6in. in his stockinged feet, turns the scale at 13 score pounds avoir- dupois. All the members of the family are over two yards in height, and their weight is in proportion. Naturally, this "wonderful boy" of Croston is attracting a full share of atten- tion, and the Lancashire village is taking on a new lease of fame by reason of its youthful prodierv. But young Norris has a long way to go before he outstrips John Trundley, the fat boy of Peckham." At the age of five Johnny weighed lOgt. 41b.; in Maroh, 1907, at eight years and four months-when he was very much in the public eye owing to the refusal of the magistrates to grant him permission to go on the sta.ge-he weighed just 17st., and was still growing at the rate of about 2st. a year. The biggest ohildren in the world are said to be a boy and girl of New Zealand, who in the summer of 1907 were in England visit- ing relations at Wednesbury. The boy, aged eleven, was 5ft. 3in. high, and weighed over 20s t. His sister, aged thirteen, weighed 17st. 41b.

THE LEGEND OF FRIDAY. The bad luck supposed to attach to Friday is said to be traceable to the worship of the goddess Freya, the Venus of the North, who felt 'herself slighted if anyone began a journey on this, her festival. In punishment for the dishonour thus brought upon her, Freya was wont to direct misfortune to assail the offender, so that it came to be thought that Friday was an unlucky time to emba,rk on any enterprise. In Walsh's "Curiosities of Popular Customs is told the story of the brig Friday, of Wilmington, whose builder defied superstition by giving her this, whimsioal name and launching her on Friday. He also sent her upon her first voyage on the sixth day of the week, but on the succeeding Friday a home-bound vessel" saw the hull of a brig pitching heavily in the trough of the sea, while her crew about the deck, cutting loose the wreck of the masts that dragged and bumped alongside. This was the last seen of the brig Friday.

LIFE IN THE WEST END. "I look upon you with supreme contempt and disgust," said Mr. Denman at Marylebone Police-court to a bookmaker named Edward M'Cann, aged 26, living at Maida Vale, who was charged on a warrant and found guilty of living wholly or in part on the improper earnings of his wife Dorothy. Mrs. M'Cann, a young woman neatly dressed in blue, told a distressing story. She said she had been married to the prisoner for five years. During the first two years he earned his living partly on the racecourse and partly at a bQot and shoe shop, but for the last three zea.rs he had lived on her earnings, and she nad paid the rent and kept the home together. In reply to questions she admitted, with emo- tion, tha.t it was a.t her husband's suggestion that she had adopted her mode of living, and said she continued to support hian in this way until last Thursday, when she left him because of his persistent cruelty and threads, and his refusel to maintain her. Mr. Den- man passed sentence of three months' hard labour, saying the prisoner's own admissions were evidence of the probability of all that had been alleged against him.

Poter Robinson were the plain- tiffs in an action at the Bloomsbury County- court recently, in which the, defendant was described as a "gentlemaii." The defendant seemed a little indignant. and asked the judge what right plaintiffs had to call him a gentleman. Has the word any meaning?" he said. The Judge: "Yes! it has a legal meaning." Defendant: I am not a gentle- man. I do all kinds of work for a. firm, a. handyman, salesman, iaek-of-all-trades. It was taken in that way to bounce the money out of me. (Laughter.) The debt was incurred in my wife s business, and will be paid."

HERO AND HEROINE. I A plucky act was performed at Withernsea sea,sid-e station one day. While a crowd of excursionists were on the platform a woman I carrying a baby fell on the line right in front of an oncoming train. Despite the great danger a workman jumped off the platform and succeeded in pulling the mother and child away just in time to escape the train. The modest hero did not desire that his name should be known. Nancy Bradshaw, aged 13, daughter of a, coal ir.'gTchent, made a gallant rescue at Loughborough one day. A little boy named Bailey fell from the bridge into a deep part of the canal and was quickly carried into midstream. Fully clothed, the girl dived in. and after a rapid swim succeeded in rescuing the drowning boy.

MISSING SIXTEEN YEARS. A sirteen-year-old mystery was revived at Brighton County-court recently, when Mr. Montague Williams, solicitor, applied for leave to presume the death of Edgar Lraokin Hope, at one time of 9, Kemp-street, Brighton, in order to soothe a proper dis- tribution of the estate of Hope's mother. On February 12, 1894, Hope. who was a post-office clerk, had a holiday. and left to spend the day in London. Nothing had been heard of him since, though advertisements had been put in the, newspapers announcing that he I was entitled to part of hi-i mother's property. Judge Scully adjourned the case until November for further advertisements to be issued.
