ANOTHER CORY INSTITUTE AT CARDIFF. In the absence of Sir Clifford Cory, Mr. F. de Courcy Hamilton opened a very fine working men's institute in Comet-street, Roath, Cardiff, on W^fLnesday evening. There was a very large attendance, and the proceedings were of a most enthusiastic character. The institute is the second one founded by Mr. John Cory, Wellington- street being the first, and it is the inten- tion of the donor to erect two other places. On the ground-floor there is a fine billiard- room, with bagatelle-room and parlour, as well as other rooms, and on the upstairs floor thero is another billiard-room, the table in which belonged to the King when he was Prince cf Wales. There is also a lecture ball capable of holding nea-Tly 200 people. Mr. W. H. Scott vres the architect, and he has made a fine transformation of the buildings. Already thero are 250 mem- bers of the club, which is entirely undenominational and non-political.

INQUEST AT CARDIFF. Mr. W. L. Yorath held an inquest at Cardiff on Wednesday touching the death of John Albert Drewitt, of Bridgend-street, whose body was on Tuesday found on the foreshore near the Queen Alexandra Dock. Superinten- dent Davies watched the proceedings for the Cardiff Railway Company. The father said his son had suffered from giddiness, and his nose frequently bled. The landlady stated that deceased took powders for his head. William Criddle. a foreman with Mr. John Stephens, said that the deceased commenced work loading wagons of pitwood on Monday morning, and about 3.30 complained of ill- ness. He said, "I won't work again to-day." Dock-constable William Morgan stated that deceased's coat was found about 200 yards from where the body was discovered. Dr. G. N. Wynne, locum tenons for Dr. T. Wallace, said it was quite possible, from the history of the case, that the man on this occasion suffered from giddiness, that his nose bled, and that he went to the water to bathe it and fell in. Death was due to asphyxia. An open verdict was returned.

II METHODIST MEETINGS AT TRECASTLE, EARNEST APPEAL FOR TEACHING OF WELSH. The sittings of the South Wales and Mon- mouth shire Quarterly Association of the Cal- vinistie iiethodiste were resumed on Wednes- day at Trecastle, Breconthire, under the presidency of the Rev. D. M. Davies, Pen- I.clawdct (moderator). There was again a large attendance of delegates. The day's proceed- ings opened at ten o'clock at Tanycastell Chapel, when a general society was held, and an interesting and able paper given on the i''Intercession of Christ" by the Rev. S. E. Prythereii, London, several other speakers following. The necessity for the establishment of a summer school, with a view to the equipment of Sabbath schools with properly trained teachers, led to an interesting discussion. The suggestion emanated from the Sunday School Union Committee of the General Assembly, of which the Rev. R. J. Rees, M.A., Aberystwyth (formerly of Cardiff), is the energetic secretary. The Rev W. D. Rowlands, Carmarthen, sup- ported the proposal in a vigorous speech, and referred to the good results achieved at Car- marthen in the direction indicated, Processor T. A. Levi, Aberystwyth, regretted the fact that, wliib-t the Board of Education and other authorities were doing all for the improvement of the day schools and tho equipment of tho teaching staff, the Sabbath school had been allowed to drag along without any special provision what- ever being made for the appointment of fu:ly-trairted teachers. Lit-e-r the Rev. R. J. Rees. 1i.A.. and others bad spoken, it was decided unanimously to adopt the committee's recommendations. TEACHING OF WELSH. "The importance of teaching Welsh on the hearthstones" was the subject dealt with by Mr. Thomas James, Porthcawi. It was 3-tated, said the speaker, that the more Anglicised Wales became the less hold had religion upon the nation. The I0S3 of its language would land the nation in ohaos, and the nation would not recover itself for generations. The perpetuation of Welsh was not to be secured by spasmodic efforts and by a few minutes spent in a day school by mcn not specially qualified. Mr. James advocated tho appointment of a specia-liy- qnalided teacher for each group of schools The summer school would certainly prove above all other things the need of regular home teaching. To encourage this the reader of the paper recommended some means of publicity showing the- approval of the nation of trained mothers, for the home WM the university of the nation. It. work was of infinitely more importance than the national colle-ges. Some of the great Lon- den papers lia-d news in French. Why should not the great Cardiff papers give news in Welsh ? A REMARKABLE PROTEST. A Delegate suggested that the able paper read by Mr. James be summarised and sent to the various monthly meetings and presby- teries. The Rev. Evan Price, Ebbw Vale, entered his protest agai&st eucli proceedings. He remarked that he wa.s ae ardent a Welsh patriot as anyone present, but the place to argue the matter was the Cymmrodorion Society, the Eisteddfod, or the National Universities. The association met to advance the Kingdom of Jssus Christ in the language of the peopre. That langruape in Monmouth and parts of Glamorgan. Brecon, Radnor, and Pembroke was English. They were not ordained ministers to he agents of the Welsh otiiisation Society, but to preach and teach the young their evangelical conception of the religion of their ancestors. Wa* there a.ny sense in sending a message like that proposed to the English monthly meeting3? It was eventually resolved to send the message to the Welsh churches. UNDERPAID MINISTERS The Rev. W. Samlet Williams (Skewen) again brougnt forward his proposal for the bettor remuneration of the ministers all round; and advocated the appointment of a committee to draft a scheme to re-arrange salaries according to the trust deed, so that a snnlar stipend be paid for serving the small and the largo churches. Proceeding, he enumerated several instances where ministers received only fifteen and sixteen shillings a week, and a total of £60 a year. That. be [to remembered, after years of collegiate tra-ining. The Rov. William Evans. M.A.. Pembroke Dock, thought the matter an important one, and moved tho appointment of a select com- mittee to deal with the whole matter and bring in a report for further action. The Rev. T. J. Morgan, Penygarn, seconded and the resolution was carried unanimously.' DR. JOHN PUGII'S MEMORIAL FUND. The Rev. John Morgan Jones, Cardiff, Raw, a resume of the work already accomplished in connection v.ith Dr. John Pugh's Memorial Fund. He hoped to find the £20,ooD required in the hands of the treasurer by the end of the year. They were now only £4.GGO short, and with a further effort on the part of the monthly meetings their expectations would be realised. The Pias Dinam family had given £5.COO to the fund--(cheers}—and Mr. John Cory had psid his promised instalment of .£5CO. Mr. Cory would give another JE500 as soon as his challenge would be met. It was decided to call the attention of the Churches to the fund.
