MEDICAL INSPECTION OF CARDIFF CHILDREN. REPORT ON THE WORK OF THE FIRST QUARTER. Dr. E. Walford, the medical office of lieal th, presented to the Cardiff Schools Management Committee yesterday (when Alderman Robert Hughes presided) his first Quarterly report on the medical inspection of school children. Elaborate tables are included in the report chowiug the nature of the defects found in the boys and girls leaving school during the Quarter:- Boys. Girls. Number exa-nuned 730 780 B-afeotiv-e vielan 160 272 Throat- or mose diseases — 115 156 Decayed teeth 591 681 Ear disease 46 8 Heart disease .—. 10. 25 Tubereula-is 17 22 Skin disease —^ 11 Parasites in head 19 149 Of the 1.223 infamts entering the schools and inspected, 83 had defective vision, 158 had disease of throat and nose, 866 had decayed teeth, 32 had diseases of the ear. 8 diseases of the heart, 42 had tuberculosis, 143 skin diseases, and 129 had parasites in the head. Eighty pupil teachers were examined by the school medioal officers. Of these 61 were females and nineteen males. Of the fore. going several were found to be suffering from defective vision, which were correeted by appropri.ate spectacles, and all were cer- tified as physically fit for duty. The findings of the inspection (Dr. Wal- ford states) conducted during so short a period as three or four months, and asso- ciated with but a small proportion of the f.chool population, haudly justify any exact conclusion as to the amount of disease, although a rough general idea may be formed of the most prominent defects likely to be revealed. Such defects should, of course, be remedied, and it may be men- tioned that much amelioration can be, and has been, effected without any specific medi- cal treatment. For example, a certain pro- portion of the eye defects are due to defec- tive lighting of class-rooms, to badly con- structed desks, or to improper and con- strained positions in writing and reading. Many of the disorders of the throat and nose can be remedied by improved condi- tions of heating and of ventilation in the Tooms Dirty and verminous heads in most cases require very simple remedies, combined with cari and cleanliness. These matters are now constantly receiving the attention they deserve. In other cases requiring more definite medical or surgical treatment, the medical officer had endeavoured by writing and interviews with the parents to obtain for the children the necessary treatment. Some 200 children requiring treatment were sub- s-equently visited by the lady health -viaitors in the medical officer of health's department, and it was found that at the time of visiting 99 had received no attention, 28 had been taken to the Cardiff Infirmary, 40 had been attended by their own doctors, and ten had been treated by chemists." APPOINTMENT OF SCHOOL NURSES. Dr. Robinson said the education committee ought to face the question of appointing qua.li-n.ed daily visiting Tiurses of their own. He moved that the education committee, be recommended to appoint two such nurses at a commencing salary of JE80 (rising to jElOO). Mrs. Lester Jones seconded, and it was carried unanimously.

MILFORD AND SWANSEA FISHERIES. COMPETITION CAUSES DEPRESSION IN EAST COAST TRADE. The extensive development of the West Coast fisheries has been one of the factors which have occasioned a feeling of deep depression at Grimsby. The advance of such markets as Fleetwood and Milford Haven has spelt something approaching disaster to Humber fishermen and fish merchants. T^ie whole of South Wales and a considerable portion of the Midlands draws upon Milford and Swansea, whose easy railway rates help them to compete agiansi the East Coast trade. Other factors of the depression have been the increased price of coal and the decided shortage of flah in tNorth Sea,
