ALLEGED LIBEL AT t;\VANSEA. THE DEFENDANT COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. At Swansea Ponce Court on Monday (before the Stipendiary) Richard Peregrine, labourer, wax charged with U)a)icious!y libelling William Henry Reynolds M' Smith prosecuted, and Mr. Wood- ward defended. In opening the case Mr. Smith slid the prosecutor was a sub-manager at the Landore Siemens Stea! Works. Defendant was at one time employed there, but he was dismiM'ad. and he seemed to have pitched upon the prosecutor as the person who by improper inthence had pro- cured his dismi-'sat. Mr. Smith) hen reada letter dated 'ebruary 23, which was signed by the defendant, and in whieh he said the company might save JE20 a week on the shearing contract. This ietter was put in as showing by the nature of its con- tH')ts that the defendant was the writer of the letter containing the iibe). The latter was an anonymous ittter signed "AWeit Wither." and dated January 21. The writer charged the prose- cut nr with .I\arin in the haul" made by George H:-iijilt,on, the shuat-er, or, in other words, I with sharing in the profit of a contract improperly given. The letter atso stated that. the defendant coutd extort money as presents for di n'urent jobs given." and that" roDer- I men and turnacemMngave him wpfkty tips." The WHS as a He said lie was sub-'nanagcr over the mi));! and hammers at the Old Stcet Works. He denied the imputations in jthennonymous tetter, and added that. knowing (he defendant's handwriting, he b<?!)eved the .iHcged jibe! to ha.ve been written by him.—Mr. K J. R. Caru!!a. manager of the Landore Steel aid ne received the anonymous ietter in question. Kthe 8tntpments contained in 'hat i.tt'T were true they would bo very injurious to the prosecutor. Witness did not béli,>vu the state- m<;nts. Mr. Gordon, the marking director. handed to witness the letter dated February 23, which had been addressed to him, and witness handed both letters to the prosecutor, who had produced them in court. Defendant was dismissed from the works by the prosecutor. Witness had the two tetters, all, judging by the aJonH, lie was as as lie was or his own existence that they were written by the same hand. That opinion was strengthened by the things mentioned in the two lettcts.—George Wiihams, sub manager over the mitts and hammers at the New Stcc) Works, said that after the defen- dant wa.s discharged he asked him (witness) for wok. lie said Reynoida h..d discharged him. and cursed and swc! :"?d said he wou!d have his ro- vfngc, and woutd moke it so bad for Reynolds that he wou)d get him and more with him kicked out of the pLtce This wfm in Die early part of January. it ness gave h'in work, but was obliged to dis- charge him. He afterwards to)d witness that he wouid write to Dr. Siemens, and would make it hot-, notoniy }or Ruynotds but for Mr. Carutla.—The Stipendiary said ib wcuid be necessary to call an Rxpfrt.a.sto the handwriting, and the case was adjourned until Tuesday for that purpose. At Swansea Poi'ce Court on Tuesday (before the Stipendiary) Hichard J. Peregrine, labourer. Landore, was charged, on an adjourned summons. with ttj:))iciousty J:be!)ing Wm. Henry Reynolds. manager of the mills and hammers at the Old Steel- works. Landore. Mr. Smith prosecuted, and Mr. \owJwltl'd defended. The aHeged !ibe! was con- tained in an anonymous letter written to Mr. Ca:'uHa, the generai manager of the works, in which the prost'cutorwas charged with sharing in the proms of a contract improperly given, and also with extorung money from work!r'3n f))' L!oü(i "jobs."—Mr. G.AUen.accountant, wasnowtl\ed as an expert to speak a- to the handwriting. Having compared the anonymous tetter with another signed by the defendant, he said he had no doubt that, the two were written by the same hand. ttltliou,Ii the writing in the former was feigned. 'Fi ip, 7 lie considered there was sumcicnt evidence to make it incumbent on him to send the case for trial. Defendant was com- mitted to the assizes.—For the purpose of per- petuating tcHti'.tony, Mr. Woodward ca]!ed Mary Peregrine. tho mother of the defendant, and Aiice Ann WiUiams, h's sister. The former swora that neither of the !etMrs produced were in defendant's handwriting, and the latter, white admitting that the signed tetter was something like her brother's handwriting, said the anonymous one was not. a bit iine it. The witnesaes were then bound over to appear at the HSf-ixes.and the defendant was admi'ted to bai!,ono surety in £20 and huusoit' in jE40.
