CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION LECTURES.— he first of a course of lectures to be delivered in the South Wales district under the Cambridge diversity Extension Scheme for the session oi *■881-82, was given at the Town-hall on Tuesday *vening by Mr. Richard G. Moulton, M.A. At the ,°Htset of his address the lecturer apologised for non-appearance in September last, and ex- fussed a hope that the interruption caused hereby would not militate against the success of ensuing session. The interruption referred to ^as the more to be regretted because, as he bad been informed, a university college was about to be established here, and the district ^as likely to become a centre of educational life to others. His text, as given in the syllabus, was very simple one. He proposed to present the hakespearian drama as a combination of three elements-the old English drama (the miracle Way, mystery, and interlude); the ancient classi- Cal drama, revived by the Renaissance; and the s'ory books of romance and history. Before pro- ceding to the consideration of these elements, e observed that a lady some time back spoke of the Cambridge Extension as causing eaucational uneasiness amongst the comfort- able classes. He on the contrary believed J-hat the reverse was the case. Those who sought l° benefit by the scheme were not under school Pressure, they were not students in the sense that they had to drop other pursuits and give up their titrie wholly to learning, but they com- •Jr^ed all classes and ages of the com- munity. To those who were of a scientific turn of mind he would say that the subject of that CoufSe was really the consideration of a new phase scientific inquiry, while to the unscientific he f;ould point out that it dealt with pedigree as l&plied to departments of literature. The initia.- /JT7 elaboration of the heads into which the course divided was listened to with evident apprecia- tIon by a fairly large attendance of hearers. ^T.
