The motive which prompted mm re- mains now the chief mystery. It uuired that a lunatic escaped on iriday day of the murder-from Bridgend asylum, and this has naturally created an mtsnse sen- sation, as the fellowjm^not been re-captured. AN EXTRAORDINARY INCIDENT. THREATENING TO A CYCLŒT. "YOUR MONEY OR YOCH LIFE. An extraordinary and sensational incident. which in all probability has some connection with the Fairwater tragedy, was reported so Detective Rankin, of the Cardiff Pohce, on Tuesday evening, by Charles V\ Una I axis, seaman, living at 32. Paris told him he did not want to buy the weapon, and upon this the man presented it at him and told him to hand over his money. Paris thereupon picked up a large stone and told the man that. if attempted to lire he would knock him on the head. The man then said, "If I had^ontt. cartridges I'd finish you as I have otners^ Paris then re-mounted his machine an to Newport, and there reported the mat-ert the police. Remembering that, and seeing that they had the gas pipes already laid Into the market, he did not think it was necessary to go to the expenue ot putting eloatricitv into the inaraev at present. Aluerman Harris said that there had been an estimate presented by each of the gentle- men mentioned in the recemmendatiou, aud he wanted to know the amounts. Alderman Lewis wanted to know why the tendering had net been thrown epen to public competition. He thought there was sufficient information there for gentlemen who hail any regard for, the public health of the borough. They had spent £ 130.000 ill buying up and cleanng any slums in the past, but. if that went on they would have as many dark spots in the town as they had then. I No one seconded, and the motion fell to the ground. Notices were ordered to be served for the im- provement and lighting of Caswell lane and Convent-street.. Mr. Councillor Milward writes to the Western Mail" a letter, in which be refers to a sad fatality on the barque Earl of Cado- gan. when in latitude 35.19 S., longitude 18.08 E. A strong breeze sprung up from the N.\V which struck the vessel, and vivd flashes of lightning were seen. The WILt,.fl below, in consequence, were willed up to shorten sail. The vessel was then going at the rate of ten knots an hour in a south-easterly course. All hands were aloft furling the sails, when, at 6.40 a.m., the cry of "Man over- board was raised. An apprentice, named Henry Walker Hannah, only thirteen years old I whilst- engaged in furling the main-royal, lost his balance and fell into the sea. The vessel was unable to heave to, and the poor boy was lost. Now. if the report is correct with regard to the age of the dear little fellow, 1 consider that a more cruel act I have never heard < if in all my experience (now 30 years) of shipping and marine mattters. Very probably, if in- quiry were made, it would be found that this was uie first voyage for the poor boy, who was an apprentice, it is a case most unheard of, and I think it wrong to have sent a little thirteen-year-old boy up amid the dangers of furling the main-royal in a storm.

THE NAVVIES STRIKE AT ISWANSEA.…
THE NAVVIES STRIKE AT I SWANSEA. I CORRESPONDENCE WITH THE CONTRACTOR. I VALUE OF CASUAL LABOUR. I FROM THE EMPLOYERS' VIEW. Up to the present the story given by the men in connection with the strike of navvies in the employ of Sir John Jackson, at the East Dock Extension, at Swansea, has b«n the only one made public, but to-day (Wed- nesday) a representative of the "Post.' on paying a visit to the spot-, was infoinied of things which place a somewhat different- aspect on the state of affair?. It was pointed out to him that when the work was begun it was the intention to pay properly qualified navvies 5d. per hour, but it was thought that 4j i. would be adequate pay fci inexperienced men. who were only taken on because they were out of work, a.nd had themselves and families to support. This, most people would tlùnk, would appear to be a sensible ajid business-like discrimination. When the men, however, decided 1A. go in for 5d. per hour all round, they adopted diastic measures, which did not at all commend themselves to the management. They asked to be paid 5d., and as it was not forthcoming immediately they ceased work, and came out 011 strike. There was no attempt to seek a conference on the point in the first instance, and no request for their demand to be laid before Sir John Jackson, who only could settle it. As a con- sequence Sii John has intimated that he will have nothing to do with any outsiders, as the officials of the Union are termed, but will only treat with the men themselves. He has every desire to do tliis in a fair and proper spirit, but he wishes, as is only natural, for a man who is paid 5d. per hour, to be worth it. There seems to be no scarcity !If labour, and plenty of men are working. Some 50 or 60 men came out, but over a dozen have returned— fortunately for them before their places were tilled up. It is pointed out that the action of the strikers has greatly prejudiced the chances of the local unemployed being taken on. as the feeling is very strong that only ex- perienced navvies should in future be engaged men fully conversant with the class of work, and many of whom have worked for Sir John Jackson before. LETTER FROM :èI1{ J. JACKSON. The following correspondence was posted up at the works during tiie dinner hour Navvies. Brick Layers, and Geneial Labourers' Union. 52. Station Road, Barry Dock. Voin-s truly, JOHJf WARD. President." Kevham, Devon port. "July 14. Ib96. —r. John Ward, 52. Station Road, Barry Dock. Sir,—Your note of the 10th, owing to being iuoorrectly addressed, only arrived at WestmiaBtei yesterday, and has been sent here. I don't think a. meeting with you in the matter you refer to could have any useful etfect. I have said before I could meet you as representing my workmen, very few of whom I believe are members of the Lnion. 1 may tell you, however, that at Swan- sea, 1 understand, to proper aawies. we had arranged to pay 5d. per hoar, but certainty j not to the tinworks labourers, whom, finding j out of work at the time, we took on. I believe you arc an old navvy yonrsulf, and must be aware such men are not as well worth 4 £ d. as men of experience in this cla&i of work are worth 5J. This paltry strike is the iirst that has occurred on any works of mine in England, and I am only pleased to think it has not been brought about by old hands, between whom and myself, ] am proud to feel, there has always been the best of feelings. Had there been any real grievance it could have been more reasonablv considered by II deputation of the men tliemselves to my agent. Mr. Wilkinson, than the" forcing method of going out in a body, with the 1 view of canting as much inconvenience as I' possible. Whether I have you to thank for lollS or not. i cannot t." 11. Yours faithfnllv, JOHN JACKSON."

SALVING A WILSON LINER. A SWANSEA ( APTAtN TO THE RESCUE. A reperter of the Post to-doy (Wed- nesday) drocpcd across Captain Gates, of the D.I, Mohawk, one of the well-known boats I of tbo Atlnntie Transport Line. Captain Gates is in Swansea for a fow days visiting his wife and other relatives until lie is due back io Lendon to proceed on another voyage. Me is a son-in-law of Mr Jenkins, of the Arches Hotel. It was en Monday week, tbe 6tli inst., when on the homeward voyage from New Yerk te Louden with 54 passengers and 600 cattle, that the Mohawk was signalled by another steamer, which asked to be taken in tow. Captain Gates took the Mohawk close up, and feund that the other ateamcr was the Rialto, belonging te the famous Wilaee Line of Hull, and on a voyage from Newcastle to New York with chemicals. A towing rope was fixed with some difficulty, as there wan a heavy sea, though very little wind. The rope broke onee, but was connected again, and on the morning of the 8lb Halifax, whieh was 240 miies from where the Kialto was sighted, was reached. Captain Gates then put about, and resumed for Louden, which was reached ou Saturday last, some 36 hears behind her time. The reason fer the Rialto needing towing was that her shaft was broken. She is a beat of sonao 3,000 tons, and a considerable sua for salvage will no doubt be shared betveu the owners of the Mohawk, Captain Giles, aud the orew. ■ —9
