THE MUMBLES FIRE,j
THE MUMBLES FIRE, RUINS INSPECTED BY LARGE CROWDS. "'Tis an ill wind that blows uobec'v good'' is an old proverb which vas justified on Sunday. Though the burning of the Ship and Castle Hotel was fraught with such disastrous consequences to the proprietor, Alt Parkman, the Swansea and tumbles Ruiiway profited by a consiuerable sum in passenger lures thereby eu Sunday, thousands from Swansea aud neighbourhood visiting the scene ot the lamentable catastrophe, A curious circumstance in connection with the lire is tha iact that, though everything eisein Mr Aif Parkman s studio—wuieh was situate in the hease between the hot- and the shop of Mr xvlacaulav—was completely destroyed, an eight-dav clock, whieh was hanging on the wallIn one of the corners of the front room, was, strange to tav, lelt almost untouched, except for having been badly scorched. Late on Saturday evening (though water had been poured for the greater part of the day on the debris of the hotel) the attention of the police was cahed to the faet that the flames had broken out again. They spread quickly, but Sergeant Dag-, and P.C:s Morris and David, assisted by a man named David WUliama, employed by the Oysteraieuth Disirict Council, were quickly on the seen." and set to work with the hose, and in about a quarter of an hour the outbreak was subdued. Another outbreak took place on Sunday afternoon, and was witnessed by the crowds who had gathered to look at tne ruins oi the hostelry. Tliis tima the flames originated in the remnant of Mr Parkman s studio, tome joists iu tha wail of Mr Macaulay's shop having ignited. However, a good suppiv of water was ejected from the hydrants of the Oystermouth Waterworks by Sergeant Dagg and his constables, assisted Ly seme of the bystanders, and the fiame* were in a short space ot time queuched. Though it was on Saturday stuted by us that the premises and household goods wero completely gulled, wiaeh appeared to be the case at the time of writing, it has been ascertained that a portion of the back premises, including the kitchens, with their appurtenances, were not totally destroyed. On the morning of the conflagration, when the fire was at its height, se great was the fear that the outfitter's shop neyt door w»uld be burned dewn, that the whole or tne goods and household furniture wero cleareu oil the premises by the willing hands o the coastguards and villagers, to whom grsat praise is due for Lue courage thev displayed. Besides the loss of his valuable musical in- struments, including the splendid -Strad,' at which Mr Parkman is greatly grieved, a valuable painting is believed to have been destroyed by the falling of the wall oa which it was hanging.

Jeffreys, acting for himself and his mother, Mrs Mary Jeffreys, writes *.—My atientio:) has beeu drawn to an advei l.ismerit in your paper Notifying that Messrs George and D. Miller have been carrying ou business as drapers at 37, Bollevuc-street, Swansea. I bag to say thaI, mv mother, the tenant of 37, Bollevuc-street, knows nothing of Messrs Gecrge and David Miller, They never at any time occupied any part of the premises, and so far as this house i.4 concerned the statement is false uad misleading. It was stated by us on Saturday that the men employed at Messrs. lvian's Copper- works had had their wages reduced by 4d per hour. A deputation had an interview with Mr Prior 08 Saturday evening, with tbo result that, while the reduction was agreed to, the men are in future to receive extra payment for working Urge plates. It is worthy of note that there liits never been a strike at Messrs Vivian s woiks, all matters in dispute having always been tmicably settled, At the Cwniafon Boys' Schoolroom an j Saturday last, a po:! of the parishioners ws taken as to "whether tha Parish Couincit should undertake to build a ParLh ilali. There were 350 votes cast, the total elector- ate being 850. At nine o'clock the presiding of licet* deelared the results as follows :— For the Hall. 62 Against 288 *— Majority against 226 The Rev. The number is estimated at between 70 and sa, and an effort is being made, more especially by Council,or Morgan fiopklu to induce the Swansea Corporation to proceed with certain public works which will u.ilerd work to a goodly number of the masons who arc out of work. The matter was brought nt, before a recent committee meet- ing of the Council, rnd it will ptobably find discussion at Wednesday's meeting of the corporation. Meanwhile many 0:: the masons arc endeavouring to enlist tho interest and support of different mem-1 bers of the corporation, and to this end are seeking interviews with them. The suggestion is that tho erection of retaining walls at the slaughter-hou^e and at Mount Pleasanf and similar public works is ve: v necessary, and that altogether a. sum of about £ 1,000 could be usefully expended at the Drelient time. Three applicants were to-day bclected by the Llanelly Borough Council, out of 70, for the po.ii of carelsker of the new Town Hall, to appear before a committee with thcir wives. Their names arc—Geo. SOUTH WALES UNIVERSITY COLLEGE. SWANSEA AND THE NEW BUILDING! It will be '.vithin the memory of the public that tile Treasury last year promised grant I of £ 20,000 towards the new buildings of the South Wales University Ccliege at Cardiff, ou condition thet the siroe amount | v.as collected in South Wales. The Drapers' Company, of London, also generously; promised a. grant of £ 10,000 on con- dition that the above sum of £ 20,000 j would be collected in the course of 12 months, ani that period of time elapses next July, t L. the 26fii of last mouth Principal Viriamu Jones received a eommmunication from the Treasury, staling that £ IO,OCO must be collected by February. and the remaining £ 10,000 by July. The mayor of Swansea (Aiuerman Bradford) convened a meeting of the Sw ansea committee for Monday afternoon j for the purpose of arranging for the collec- iier) of foudsin this u,strict. The atten- dotcee was #xecedingly disappointing, those present besides his worship being Miss Dillwyn, Sir J, Coke Towler, the Re. J. A. Jenkins (registrar of the college), and Mr J. Thomas (town-clerk), and Mr Miller (the town-clerk's deputy).—The Mayor (who lead letters r.poiogising for the ah-.euca of Sir JohnT. D. Llewelyn and H. S. Lindley) said the attendance was most unsatisfactory, but he hoped that as the result oi the attendance of represents! ives of the press, greater public interest wouid be taken in the object of that gathering.—The Rev J A Jenkins, the college registrar, stated that a sum of over £ 14,0U0 had been collected, and in order to raise the remaining turns South Wales and Men-1 n.outbsiiire bad been divided into 120 dis-! tricts, and in e-teii district there was a loeal committee. He peirtted out the rapidity with which tho eoliegc had grown. The number of students at the end of 1891 was 170, which had increased at the end of 1S95 to 395, There were 32 lecturers, assistant lecturers and demonstrators and also four e^teiif iau lecturers 011 mining, engineering, and Kiudi eu subjects. Oncol those lecturers had told him that the best centre for the mining (, -ts lectures had been at Port Talbot, which was not far from Swansea. In connection with the work of these lectures there were 8;CC0 students. His present mission was to! ask the generous people of Swansea to do what they could towards raising the balance required ior the nc.v college buildings. He bad printed collecting books, and would be pleased to distribute tiiem.—in reply to 11r Fowlei, the Registrar stated that 120 of the students wero irom Cardiff, and over 175 írOill the rest of Glamorganshire.— in replv to Miss Diilwyu, Mr Jenkins said that bad it not been for the establishment of the Welsh t niversities there would have been little means oi education for students from the metallurgical centres. The fees wero very much hnrer than those at the colleges that existed before the establishment o; the university.— The Mayor said he thought it would be wed for him to communicate with the local committee again, askinj them to j subscribe and collect.—Miss Dillwvn aud Mr i owler signified their desire tft subscribe, and Mr Jenkins suggested thai, a pubilC meeting should be Leld,- Miss DiUwyn 81:1.'11. she was afraid tbat Swan- sea was iiut very keen about tho Cardiff college.—Mr J. C. Fowler said that as a goverror of the college lie willingly bore testimony to the valuable work done, and the exceedingly strong and able staff.—Votes of thank.v to li s Mayor aud Air Jenkins closed the meeting,
