A pathetic story has gone the rounds of this dis Irict, writes a I.1anelly reporter, in which a poor widow, at the advanced age of 78, of the name of Margaret Thomas, living ata cottage known as B. yti mawr, near St. David's Colliery. Lianeily, who for 20 years has been a martyr to great weakness and dropsy depriving her of the use of her general strength. She eventually became a perfect cripple, and failed to eave her rooms. The neighbours assisied her in every way they could. In thit state &he determined to apply for parish relief, and the generous Guardians allowed her 2s. Sri. a week, which had to pay rent and food for seven dayi. Her doctor had utterly failed to give her any relief in way of medicine. She had I spent pounds on one. thing and another, and at last bivkedown. Nothing to do her good this side o; the grave. NOTES & COMMENTS I 9 This is the season of the year when som., people appear to abandon themselves to the periodical attack of surprise at the limited pupu'a ity uf cricket in South Wales. "See the crowds which football draws," say they, "how can you account for the miserable attendance at even the best cricket ?" "Easily enough," one might rep y. Cricket is a game which demands more time than industrial and trading classes can give to it." Football is essentially a game for the I workman with limited leisure, and to the business man to whom time is money. Cricket does not prosper in the Principality for the reason that it is far from being the best of its kind, and for the further reason, that the country is very inadequately pro- vided with that wealthy leisured class who form the backbone of the support given to H in other parts of the Kingdom. -The man who/aspires to grow into a first-eiass cricketer must have the advantages of sound tuition, and must be able to give many hours of practice to it each I week. Considering the splendid lights the old South Wales Club used to make against good English teams—even the All England Eleven which more than one- visited West Wales—one is tempted to think that I we are not even progressing. In those days a larger number of players seemed to be available to local clubs who had profited by the training offered at tha big public schools and 'varsities. In the populous centres of the North it is trua that thousands of people can be got to attend matches. Hut there the talent is of first-class quality, and the 1 widespread prevalence of night and day 1 shifts in the factories afford workmen opportunities which are denied to the same class in Wales. We generally fail to realise that compared with Yorkshire and Lancashire, Wales is very thinly populated and the chief towns lie widely apart. If I we had a cluster of Swansea's within easy I reach of each other, it might be I possible to secure substantial pate takings which would serve to attract the best pro- fessional talent. As it is, the Welsh clubs are dependent almost entirely on sub- scriptions, and the greatest possible difficulty is experienced in getting the two I' ends to meet. It is doubtful m the cif- cun stances whether Wales can ever be- come a strong cricket country. Ih# diving operations in connection with the unfortunate Wasp have directed public attention to diving, that most eerie and danger JUS of callings. Stroud, the diver engaged on the present ccasioo, gave the Fost reporter a day or two ago an interesting description of the work he has done during a lifetime spent in diving. It reminded the writer of a day once spent in the company of one of the most expert divers in the service of the Trinity House authorities. His life's story would have made a fascinating book. He iiad gone down in almost every sea some time or another, and many adven- tures of a thrilling character had befallen him. According to him the deeper the diver went the inoieasing pressure of the water and the distance from the air- pumping machine manifested their influ- ¡ ence by a singing noise in the ear and the rush of blood to the brain. The enemy chietly dreaded was the conger eel, which has a weakness for snapping at the t'ib'ng enclosing the pure air pumped to the diver and the foul air exhaled by him. More than once he had been compelled t) use his eheath-knife to protect the tubing from the attentions of monster congers. One cf the most grue- some of his experiences was entering a cabin of a passenger ship full of dead bodies. Stroud's reference to his descent into a flooded colliery near Pontardulais reminds us of the attempt <nsde at the Tynewydd Colliery to communicate with the en- I tombed miners by means of a diver. On that occasion the irregularities of the passages underground, accentuated by the fails of roofing which had occurred, caused the failure of the attempt. And in yiew of the eventual rescue of the mpn it is perhaps just as well that it did for what effet t might have been produced upon minus weakened by starvation and suffering by the appear- ance in the darkness of the pit of the moneter a diver looks in full costuu e To colliers the figure would have bu.w abso- lutely novel, and it would not have been surprising if such a spaetac e emerging from the darkness into the dim light shed by asïngle candle had overbalanced minds already tottering. Mr. Frank Randell makes a very sensible suggestion in the Mercury. It is to deve- lope the Luiiness done in the splendid market-nlace, which is about to be com- pleted at Llanelly. His idea is to form a committee of business men to manage the market, introduce order in the distribution of goods offered for sale, and extend the scope of bartering done there. In other words, aim for securing a share of the business which in the past has been transacted entirely at the periodical fairs, but which under altered conditions is being largely lost to the towns. There is no reason except apathy, why a town like Llanelly should not have its monthly fair of horses and cattle, bringing together sellers and buvers instead of leaving them to find each other by a process of hunting, or by waiting for the fairs which occur at long intervals in remote agri- cultural centres. Such a monthly gather- ing, whether called market or fair, would, if properly managed, become in time not only a great convenience to the farmers and business men, but give a considerable fillip to the prosperity of the town. It is a matter which the Chamber of Commerce might profitably take up for discussion and action.

I GREAT FIRE AT LONDON. I £ 200,U00 DAMAGE. DISASTROUS ( ONFLAGRATION, A fire of a most destructive character— properly covering an acre and a half being wholly or partially bmneJ-broke out at 'Bermondsey, London, at an early hour or, Friday. The eutbreak occurred on the premises of Messrs. Guslav Salin^, in Tyert. Gateway, which were blocked with tallow aud hides. The damage is reported to exceed £ 150,000. The lire was extinguished at day- break. The alarm was given simul- taneously to the fire stations in the neigh- bourhood, but the pregress of the flumes was so rapid that before the brigade got to werk the premises of Messrs. Chevron & Co., ad- joining were also alight. Engines from all parts of London were aeon at work, but despite the utmost efforts, the flames spread to Messrs. Dixoo, Sons, and Taylor's leather warehouse, and caught hold. The latter is a large building and runs back toManninsr-street where a number of cottages were threatened and the inmates were hurriedly roused and made their escape. The premises of the Messrs. Remington & Co. and Potheearv and Ce. on the other side of the street, were nlso well alight and a new building in course of erection for Messrs. Boutelier, ill orti wot-e and Co. was also quickly in flames. The fire was not ).;0t under control until about 4 o'clock. The damage is now estimated at £ 200,000.

——— IS IT ANARCHISMS EXPLOSION IN A TRAIN. A MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR. The Press Association says :—Aa explosion, which is at present surreunded in mystery, at Walworth Police-station on the London- Chatham and Dover Railway on Friday. It appears that. on the arrival of the train, which left the Victoria at 11.5., a passenger, named Coles, was in the act of leaving a second-class carriage when an explosion took place. The police and the railway officials were promptly on the scene, and the carriage was found to be badly- singed, and Coles appeared in a somewhat dazed condition. The poliee took possession of a piece of brass tubing which showed signs of having been recently exploded, aud which the railway officials described as a gas cylinder. On being questioned Coles said he could not say how the tubing came in the compartment. He was the only passenger from V ictoria, and while in the carriage did not notice it. His injuries were not of a. serious nature.

Two years ago the officers of the 3rd Glaiiiorgvii Hifte Volunteers subscribed for a challenge shieicf to be competed lor every year by the companies of the corps ]n their class firing work. The shield was won in 1893 by one of the Gorseinon companies, who had it wrested from them last year by F (Captain I Blenkinsop s) Company. To celebrate their vietory aud to induce the members of the corps to do their utmost to retain the shield, Capt. Blenkinsop and Lieut. Ivor Evans on Thursday entertained their men to diniter in the Minor liall at thor headquarters whore the shield, a handsome silver trophy on an ebony tnoont, was on view. It may be men- tioned that the conditions under which it is shot for provide that 75 per cent, of the mem- bers of the winning corps must do their class I iiring within a given peried and obtain the highest figure of merit.
