Powell (Carregcennen), and the Hon. F. Rice (Dy. nevor). A Dual Charge. Prioe Davies, a collier, from Tirydail, was fined 15s. including costs for refusing to "move on" at the request of the police at the Cross Inn, Ammanford, on the night of Clje 28th ult.—The same person was fined 13s. including costs for cursing and swearing upon the some occasion. An Unprotected Machine. P.C. Dl. Davies summoned Wm. Roberts, a. farm bailiff at Pantglas, Golden Grove, for using a steam chaff-cutter without a cover to the fly-wheel and knives.—The Bench con- sidered that an offence had been committed, Md fined the defendant 10s. including costs. Drunk and Disorderlies. At the instance of P.C. Evan Davies, Dd. Richards, doubler, Ammanford, was 12s. inclusive for drunken and disorderly conduot on the 31st ult. P.C. Williams charged Thos. Rees of PenygroeS, collier, with being dnmk and dis, orderly *n the night of the 31st March. He was AnodlZB. including ooste. Alfred Humphreys and Jas. McCoy., col- jiers, of Penygroes, were also found guilty of a. similar offence, and mulcted in the sum ê)f 12B. each including costs. Theft of an Overcoat. Jos. Murphy, a navvy, hailing from Llan- debie, was brought up in custody and charged with stealing a light overcoat from the out- side of the office at Cilyrychen. Jos. Dunn, White Mill, Llandebie, and a clerk at Messrs. Penson and Southerns, iden- tified the coat produced as his property. He last saw the ooat on the previous Monday. On missing it later on in the day, he gave information to the police. P.C. Britten deposed to arresting the pri- soner on the 14th inst.. On being charged, prisoner said, *'I did take it. I thought it had been put up there for an old navvy like myself tOo pick it np The prisoner, who elected to be tried sum- marily, was sentenced to 14 days' hard la- bour. Smart Capture of a Horse Thief. Richard Carter, hailing from Birmingham, was charged with stealing a mare from Cwrt Farm, in the parish of Llanegwad, on the night of the 8th or the morning of the 9th inst. Daniel Davies^ the prosecutor, who lives at Cwrt Farm, and is a farmer, gave evi- dence. lIe said the mare was five years old, about 16 hands high. She had a lump on her left hip, a scar on the left side of her back, just under the saddle her forefeet had a tendency to turn lll. He saw her last on the night of the 8i.1h about 10.30 p:m. In his stable. Missing her on tlhe following morn- ing, he gave information to the police. The stable was not locked. The value of the mare was about £40.. „ Jonathan Jones, of the Red LIOn Hotel, Hangadock, having been called, P.C. Wm. Frank Lewis testified to tracing the stolen mare, and said that in consequence of infor- mation received, he followed the prisoner on a bicycle to Bewdley in Worcestershire, where he found the prisoner in custody at the Bewdley lock-up, having been detained on suspicion. He had him identified by two cabmen, who had seen him at Mie King's Arms, Clerbury, Mortimer, Shropshire, on the Thursday previous. Witness found the mare in a stable of the Old Black Horse f Hotel, Bewdley. He brought prisoner and the mare to Llandilo. At the Craven Arms the prisoner admitted stealing the mare. P.C. Thos. LI. Lewis, who had accompanied the last witness, corroborated. On being oharged the prisoner made no answer. He was committed for trial at the next assizes. The police officers are to be complimented upon the smart capture they effected. It is interesting to note that they travelled on the first day 45 miles over mountains and rough country roads; 50 miles on the second day, and 23 miles by road and 18 by train on the third day. On searching the prisoner there was found on him a large quantity of cheap jewellery, a six-chambered Welbey re- volver (unloaded), a large quantity of am- munition, two large knives, a number of files, and two or three bottles containing acids and poisons. MARRIAGE OF THE OWNER OF THE MANORAVON ESTATE. The marriaee of Mr Godfrev E. S. Protheroo- R«ynon, of Trewern, near Wbitland (son of Mr »• Shnw-Protheroe, of Dolwilym), and Miss iitnily Williama Lewes, elder daughter of Colonel an Mrs Lewes, of Llysnewydd, near Llandyssul, was solemnized nt Llangeler Church on Thursday afternoon, 17th instant. The numerous and costly presents included a solid silver centrepiece from the tenants of the Manoravon Estate to the bridegroom. We reerretto have to announce the death of an old and muoh respected inhabitant of this district, in the person of Mrs. Margaret Rpes, widow of the late Mr. Jobn Rees. mason, which took place at her residence, Mount Pleasant, Pontladys, near this town. after a loner illness, on Tuesday morn- imr the 15th mat-, in the 75th year of her age. The decased and the late Mr. John Bees were married nearly 55 yearn ago, and brought up" large family, of whom foursona and three daugh- ters now survive to mourn her loss. The fnneral took place the Friday following—Llandilo Parish Churchyard being the plane of interment. A large number attended, tbUR showing their hiarh esteem for the deceased. 1 be Rev. W. The country people are as capable of ar- ranging grand concerts as those of any town, as witness the concerts which were recently held at Talley and elsewhere in these dis- tricts. There was another very good one held, at Caio last night, a full report of which will appear next week. We are alL very glad that the Rev. Mr. Jones, Manordeilo. is progressing satisrac- factbrily from his recent illness, and it is our sincere hope that he will be able to re- sume his duties very soon.

THE EDUCATION BILL. It is evident that the interest of the general public in the Education Bill is fixed chiefly on the question of primary education and the proposed absorption of voluntary and Board schools by the Committees of the County Councils. Secondary and technical education seem likely to be overlooked in the excite- ment of a contest between Churchmen and Nonconformists over the control of the primary schools. As we recently pointed out, there already exists a fair system of primary education in England, and what is necessary to be now established is a system of technical and sconda;ry education. That should be the work of the Government during the present session; but if they insist on pressing on the portion of the Bill relating to primary education, it is not only extremely probable that the whole Bill will be lost, but an atmosphere of conflct will also gatber around the appointment of the Educational Commit- tees both for secondary and technical instruc- Religion has absolutely nothing to do with technical education, and it would be lamentable if f rom one end of England to the other persons were elected to the new Com- mittees not because of their fitness for managing technical and secondary colleges and institutions, but because they were Wesleyans or High Churchmen. SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST A LLANDILO AUCTIONEER POLICE COURT PROCEEDINGS AT LLANGADOCK. QUESTION OF SLANDER RAISED. At Llangadock Petty Sessions, Mr. Griffith Williams, auctioneer, King's Head Hotel, Llandilo, on Thursday, appeared in answer to a charge of an attempted rape on the 25th ult. upon Mrs. Emily Jones, wife of the landlord of the White Hart Inn, Llan- gadock.-The Clerk (Mr. Peel Price) stated that a telegram from the prosecutrix's solici- tor, Mr. Leyson, of Swansea, intimated that his inability to catch the train, which would have thken him to Llangadock, prevented his appearance. The prosecutrix's husband essayed to speak on that fact, but received an intimation not to interfere. Mr. T. G. Williams, solicitor, Llandilo, who appeared for defendant, said he had been waiting there patiently for hours whilst other matters were disposed of. in the hope of meeting the charge. His learned friend had had an opportunity since he wired of taking advan- tage of another branch train. 81nstead of doing that he had suggested to his client that the case should be dismissed, and another summons taken out. He asked the Bench to adopt the suggestion of the prosecutrix's solicitor.-The Chairman (Mr. E. P. Lloyd, Glansevin): The. case is struck out—Mr. T. G. Williams: I hopeb you will never hear any more of it. As far as I know—and it is a matter that should be made public-it is an unfounded charge. Mr. Williams, my client, wishes me to publicly make this state- ment. Mr. Jones then put his wife forward to make another application, and on venturing to address the court, he was told by the chairman to hold his tongue. Mr. T. G. Williams applied for the costs of the day. The husband of prosecutrix spoke to her and said, "If you prefer it. I ask to bind you over for the Assizes." The chairman told him he must not go on in that way, and the Bench were not going to bind any- body over for the Assizes until the case had been heard. Mrs. Jones asked for a fresh summons. Mr. T. G. Williams urged their worships not to grant a fresh summons until the costs were paid. He added that this summons was not applied for as far as he knew for a fortnight after the alleged offence, and not until he had first written to the woman's husband demanding damages or slander-The Chairman: I think we will let the costs go.-Mr. T. G. Williams: What I submit as a matter of law is that this is a private prosecution for misdemeanor. It does not differ in this case from a prosecu- tion for assault. It may or it may not be of a more serious nature. But what I say is that we are brought here on an unneces- sary and futile journey, and we are entitled to our costs against the other side. The Chairman: We will discuss the affair later on. when the case case comes on for hearing The fresh summons was then applied for under oath, and granted, and the hearing fixed. for that day month.

EGYPT'S PROSPERITY. — LORD CROMER'S REPORT. Lord Cromer reports a surplus of JE 764.000 on the year's finances, in Egypt. The revenue exceeded the estimates in every department. In every direction there are signs that the wealth of the country is growing, and steady and progressive increase of revenue may now be anticipated. In spite of a remission of tax- ation to the amount of £ 60,000. the revenue of 1902 has been estimated at £ 360,000 in excess of that of 1901. and the surplus is ex- pected to be at least £210,000. If Egypt were not: hampered, Lord Cromer says. by the peculiar system of accounts and estimates imposed by its international obligations, the figures of 1902 would provide a surplus of nearly a million available either for increas- ing expenditure, or for the relief of taxation, The plague has gradually extended, and claimed more victims from year to year since its first appearance in the country. It is to be feared that during 1902 we shall see a further extension of the disease, and that it will continue tie give considerable trouble for many years to come. The prospects of the Soudan eventually becoming self-support- ing, are more encouraging than they were twelve months ago.

FUEL FROM THE SEWAGE. The "Public Health Engineer" describes the invention ot a German chemist, Erich Springborn by name, who proposes to turn sewage sludge mto block fuel, suitable for steam-raising purpose^, at a price of from 5s. to 6s. per ton, at the same time sterilising the effluent. Mr. SprIngborn, in 1899, con- ducted expeninepts on the sewage farm of the Romford DIstrIct Council, and these showed that 9'1 lb. of water could b2 evaporated with lib. of the fuel from the sludge. Similar trials were made at Barking Electricity Works and elsewhere, but the inventor was not satisfied. In his opinion the fuel was too porous. He therefore set to work and made fresh experiments, which resulted in his adopting a new process, which it is claimed yields a fuel of high combustible properties, It is stated to be virtually smoke- less, and there is no objectionable smell in burning. The borough engineer of Redhill states it to be a very «.juick steam riser. ST. ANDREWS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, SWANSEA, QUARTERLY SERVICES. The Rev. Alex. Connell, M..A., B.D.. of the historic church at Regent-square, Lon- don, and one of the ablest preachers in the Presbyterian body, occupied the pulpit in St. Andrew's Church, Swansea, at the quar- terly services on Sunday. The singing was well selected and bright, and in the evening the choir sang an anthem, Mrs. D. T. Wil- liams taking the solo. The subject of the morning's discourse was "Christ's Instruction as to Prayer." Mr. Connell said he wanted to say something thafl morning about Christ's instructions as to prayer. All needed to be reminded what I prayer was—none more so than he; so he desired them very simply and honestly to consider Christ's idea of prayer as contained in the instructions laid down in Matthew 6th chap., 5-8 verses. There was no more searching question that any professing Chris- tian man or woman could ask themselves than "Have I really learnt to pray?" Prayer was more than a custom of the Christian Church and even, he ventured to say, than a means of grace. Prayer must be regarded as one of the earliest symptoms and one of the most incontestable proofs of the presence of a new life. Nothing assisted more all the exercises and facultties of the being than prayer. Human language never attained to such dignity as when it clothed and robed the matter of prayer. Take thought, the man who really thought, almost prayed, but a man who prayed thought with God. The only time when Jesus Christ seemed in the eyes of His disciples to be absolutely trans- formed and etherealized was upon the moun- tain top, when He, in the moment of prayer, had his form and countenance, and even raiment changed. There was something im- pressive to him (the preacher) in the fact that that took place as He prayed. Prayer had in it, elevation, light, and fire. There was no faculty of their being but immediately became transfigured and touched to finer and higher issues the moment they had learned to pray, but they must say something more tihan tnat about prayer. Prayer was really the key for them into the unseen, and the only key they had. The world of religion never unfolded its treasures to anybody ex- cept to those who had learned to pray. When they had learned to pray the dry bones of ceremony and dogma came to life again, and whereas when of old they were in a world of uncertainties and mis- givings, they suddenly found themselves in a world of order. If they had learned to pray.' the door of all truest knowledge, whether earthly or heavenly, was opened to their ken. It was therefore not without rea- son he asked them to turn to the great Master Himself. He was their model in prayer as in everything else. What did He teach about prayer? According to that passage, Jesus seemed to give three injunctions regarding prayer, which settled for ever its spirit and its matter. The first injunction was, "When ye pray do not be as the hypocrites." The word hypocrite had to their modern ear a very harsh and bitter sound. Hypocrisy sug- gested dissimulation and sham, fine outward show. but bitter unreality behind. The word hypocrisy originally meanti something more than that. The word hypokrisco which they had in the Greek, meant actor—a playactor; they were not to be actors in the hour of prayer. To play the actor in a drama might be quite legitimate, but to play the actor before God was an indelible crime. In the time of Jesus, prayer had been reduced to little more than a preposterous form, and by a little care a pretentious, ostentatious reli- gionist could so arrange it that the hour of devotion would come to him when he was in the market-place or at the corner of the street, or near a crowd. There tfce attitude was struck, and the head lifted heavenwards, and tfie words of prayer were uttered. It was at these men Jesus Christ was aiming when He said, "Don't be hypocrites, don't be a mere play-actor and poser in this most solemn business of prayer." There were many disguises that. they very readily as-- sumed when they pretended to pray. They had to be careful, for example, not to become the slaves of a simulated tone in prayer. He would be the last to question that even a certain dignity of tone of voice I was out of place, hut perhaps it were better if they learned to nray first m the same tone ns they spoke. The second injunction of I Christ was none the less suggestive. After iJ:ev had divested themselves of all disguise, and had seriously find sincerely come into I contact, into fellowship with the God whom I they sought, thpy were to shut in the heart towards God. Oh lists insists upon the in- divicjual self-withdrawal and self-direction towards God. He says, "When thou prayest, enter into 'thy closet, and when thou hast shut the door, pray to thy father which is in secret, and thy father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly." Prayer, after all, was nothing more than personal conversation with God, individual conversa- tion on their part with an individual and personal God. Much prayer was only absent- minded repetition of something they had heard or learnt long ago, that was neither the courteous nor the reverent way to treat God. The third injunction was not to use vain repetitions. He did not think that re- ferred to their repeating some prayers at certain intervals, such as the Lord's Prayer from Sabbath to Sabbath and day to day. but to such senseless and wearisome itterations as, "0 Baal hear us" uttered again and again on Mountl Carmel. when the priests of Baal were arraigned before Elijah; or later at Enhesus, when the whole populace shouted all the afternoon, "Great is Diana of the Ephesians." God does not desire the con- stant repetitions of "Aves" and "Pater Nos- ters." which he might characterise as "Pa- ganism redivivus. Let them turn their hearts God wards, and then he could imagine God's own finders would play among the dumb and broken chords, and restore the harmony of true religious prayer with all fulness, variety, and puritv. They did not know what, they were capable of until they had learnt to pray. THE ORIGIN OF THE GREAT FAMILY JONES. (Original.) Persian harem: —The house was occupied entirely by women-kind, the men living in another building altogether. They consisted of the owner of the harem, his younger bro- ther, and a nephew. A short Alight of broad stone steps led to a very thick wooden door, carved magnificently; this gave entrance to a small hall with large folding doors, appar- ently only opened to admit chance visitors such as ourselves. The hall opened into a very large drawing-room, divided at one end by a large carved screen, seemingly to form a small dining-room. On either s»ide of this long room were bedrooms, each with a dres- sing and bath room attached The whole was furnished to a certain point m English stvle: the walls of the drawing-room were hung with huge mirrors there were cosy arm-chairs and sofas, with soft velvet and satin cushions, also a piano. The bedrooms etc. were fitted up in the same way with every necessary adjunct; but the absence of an Englishwoman was shown by the fact that there were no draperies nor ornaments, the gilding of the beautiful mirrors was tarnished and broken, and the piano-cover was in rags. In many of these native homes, if they belong to the wealthy, there is a lady-companion or a governess, and it falls to her share to see that the house is pro- perly furnished and kept in order. All the wives wore the Oriental dress, but a few of the younger ones had cut themselves a fringe, and the result was very odd. As we were the first Englishwomen they bad ever seen. we presumed that the fringe was the outcome of some fashion magazine, which they would, no doubt, think it grand to imitate, even in this small way. W'e w.e^' admitted into the house by a very repnis^ looking eunuch, numbers of whom stro, through the rooms at will: there c several ayahs. The salary offered was liberal, and they were for a while very hurt when we both. without a moment's hesitation, refused the honour. However, after having carefully explained to them that, though we were earning our living from sheer necessity. veA we loved the profession we had embraced, thpy seemed to understand, and I was nleased to find that it made no difference in onr friendly relations.

Sir.—The Roumanian attitude towards her Jewish citizens, following on the forced confinement by Russia of hers in the Jewish pale of settlement; l'Affaire Dreyfus in France, together with the alien immigration agitation in England, brings the Jew I prominently before the British public,which is charactetlsed on the whole by a friendly disposition towards them, and there is little I doubt that whatever the finding of the Royal Commission may be, it will not be followed by unkind measures. In fact, it is the mission of Britain to befriend the Jews, and hence she twes her position in Egypo to the working out of the divine programme to that end. The Bible is a Jewish Book, and the saving hope of the Scriptures is a Jewish one, The Hope of Israel," and the more this is recognised the more will the Israelites be regarded in a proper light, and afforded an asylum while in exile where they can breathe the air of freedom safe from persecution. It is the purpose of God to restore the kinardom to Israel and bring about the realization of the promises he made of old to the Israelitish fathers (Abraham, Isaac and Jaeob). What were those promises which Christ died to conform ? Get thee out of thy country and from thy kindred, and from thy fathers' house unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great I nation, and I will bless thee and make thy name <*reat, and thou shalt be a blessing. And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that enrseth thee: in thee shall all him that curseth thee: in thee shall all II families of the Earth be blessed."—Gen 12,1-3. Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art, northward, southward, I eastward and westward. For all the land which thoa see'st, to thee will I give it and to thy seed for ever. Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it, for I will give ituntotbee." -Gen. 13,14-17. "Unto thy seed have I given this land from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the Euphrates."—Gen. 15, 18. This was repeated to Isaac and Jacob. As Abraham never received the land, but died in faith that he would, and his natural descen- dants only occupied it conditionally under the law of Moses, and then it did not reach the limits defined in the promise, it is evident that Abraham, Tsaac, Jacob, David and others will be raised from the dead and placed in permanent possession of the land which will stretch from the Nile to the Euphrates. Then Christ will reign in Jerusalem over the whole united house of Israel. Hoping these few remarks may be helpful to a still more friendly feeling towards the eons and daughters of the race to whom they belo-tged with an interest in the Zionist movement, and cause thankfulness that through the blindness in part that has happened to Israel, Gentiles have sn opportu- nity of sharing in the good things promise by the Gospel preached to Abraham- Yours respectfully, EESXOKATION. After the Fair was Over. Before Mr. T. Phillips (Ex-Mayor), and Mr. lSIIM Haley, Glanbrane. William Thomas, of Cilycwm, labourer, was brought up in custody of P.C. Thomas, and charged with being drunk and disorderly on the Cilycwm-road. Llandovery, on the previous night, Prisoner pleaded guilty, and beseecbedfor mercy. The constable stated that he saw prisoner on the Cilycwm-road, about 11-50 p.m., in a drunken condition, and when requested to go home, be- came disorderly. With the assistance of Mr. Harries, water bailiff, he took him to the police station. Polioe Sergeant Williams put in three previous convictions. The prisoner was leniently dealt with, being let off on payment of 10s. 2d. (including costs), and was allowed a week to pro- cure the ehekelos."

They bad an excellent passage out and were in the best of spirits. ) OFF TO THE FRONT. On Friday last, Mr. Willie Gomer James, second son of the Rev. D. James, Baptist Minister of this town, sailed from Southampton for the Cape, having successfully passed an examination for a clerkship under Lord Kitchener. Mr. James has been fer some time past in the employ of a large London drapery firm, and his co-employees, to show their esteem, made him the reeipient of a very handsome present on his new appointment, in the form of a gold ring with his initials engraved thereon. WESLEYAN BAND OF HOPE SOCIAL. On Monday evenine of last week, the Wesleyan Band of Hope held its final meeting of the winter session at the vestry room. The meeting took the form of a social tea and entertainment. The ¡ members were reeraled with tea, cake, &c., the tables being presided over by Mrs Davies, Chapel House Miss Hinkin, Steyney-road and Miss Morris, Bridge-street. Tea being over, a very interesting entertainment was held, when Master George Tomkins, Thomaston, acted as chairman.
