A MARVEL OF HlCMAN SOCIETY.-Patricians and plebeians, aristocrats and democrats, have alike stained their hands with blood in the working out of the problem of politics. But impartial history declares also that the crimes of the popular party have in all ages been the lighter in degree, while in themselves they have more to excuse them; and if the violent acts of revolutionists have been held up more conspicuously for condemnation, it has been only because the fate of noblemen and gentle- men has been more impressive to the imagina- tion than the fate of the peasant or the artisan. But the endurance of the inequalities of life by the poor is the marvel of human society. When the poor complain," said Mirabeau, the people are always right." The popular cause has been the cause of the labourer struggling for a right to live, and breathe, and think as a man.—James A. Fronde. '9 4b THE INQUISITION.—The Inquisition was introduced first into Spain by Ferdinand the Catholic, in 1470, and sea rcely had itbeen estab- lished when 2,000 people were burned by order of the Grand Inquisitor, Jen de Torquemada. It was at that period that the Jews chiefly suffered for refusing baptism. The religious persecutions of Charles V. are well known, to whose bigotry no less than 100,000 persons fell victims. On his son, Philip II., succeeding to the crown of Spain, he proved as inflexible as his father, and established the Inquisition in the Netherlands, and not only took the lives of hundreds of heretics, but also confiscated their property. It was on the 4th of December, 1808, that Bonaparte abolished the Tribunal of the Inqfu«itio& of- Madridi--Felthent.

IS IT POSSIBLE. RIPLEY'-O OVAL BLUE VERsUs RECKITT'S PARI > BLUB. EVERYONE Who uses Blue should trv a very interesting experiment which I witnessed to-day, and by which the strength and punf.V of dilTorew SNAKES can be tested and compared. THE OPERATOR took EMU*: quantities of RIPLEY'S OVAL BLUK and Rei-kitt's Paris Blue, carefully WEIGHING them to he certain that he bad no more of the OVAL than the Paris Blti These he dissolved in clellr Wetter in separate BASINS, each hasiri containing a pint of water, and then took a GLASSFUL of I water from each basin, and compared them in a good light. The colwur of the OVAL BLUE solution was so much DEEPER and PURER than that ef the other that the experimenter CALLED for another pint of water to b added to the OVAI. IILUE in the basin. The glass WNS again filled and placed beside the otter, wlicu. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS DOUBLE THE QUANTITY OF WATKH the calour WHS still purer and more intense than the other. "Give MR. ltlPLBY another pint of water criesl the Analyst. it was done, and olace more the solutions were hoid up the li«rbt, when, to tbe astenishment of ovary- body, RIPLEY'S OVAL BLUE, WITH ITS TRIPLK QUANTITY OF WATER, was even then of a richer and STRONGER hue tban its competitor, and presented a bright,(-Irar solution proving its absolute purity and complete solubility. The result oftbeexpel-itneiit is to show THAT RIPLEY'S OVAL BLUE will colour at least three times AS much water as Reckitt's Paris Blue, and that it is-as the manufacturer declares it to be-the pnre-t, strongest, and best in the world. Those who use it should remember thatone block of RIPLEY'S TAL BLUB is as good as three of the other, that it istherefoie the cheapest as weli as the best. VT. P. FISHER February 19, 1883.
