MONEY MARKET, MONDAY.
MONEY MARKET, MONDAY. The Money Market was very much disquieted during the past week, mainly, if not entirely, arising from the alleged terms exacted by Count Bismark from M. Jules Favre. On Saturday the telegrams contradicted the allegations, but without clearing the matter up. The de- mand for the surrender of some of the iron-clads is credited, that for the whole of Lorraine is doubted, and for the cession of Pondicherry disbelieved. The Bills for the 4th were well met, and caused a pretty good demand for money, chiefly at the Bank of England, the minimum being as low as tue rate in the open market. i his morn- ing "Ik per cent. was required on best bills. On the Stock Exchange the rate was nominally 2 per cent. for ad- vances no business doing. It is likely that a heavy quietude will overhang all dealings in money until the suspense during the armistice be brought to a close. The prospect this morning- was a little more easy, the settle- ment of the 4th being over. On the Continent, however, there are symptoms of new requirements, not only for France and Germany, but in other directions. MARK LANE. MoxDAY, FEB. 6. Last week's supplies of grain were very small. Exports 200 qrs. Wheat, 50 qrs. Barley, 1,483 qrs. Oats, 15,737 cwts. Flour. English Wheat 7,G58 qrs., foreign 2,3S0 qrs. There was very few fresh samples this morning exhibited in the English stands, and those in such bad condition that millers passed them by but anything fine and dry would have sold at last Monday's rates. The demand for foreign was limited, and to have sold freely it would have been necessary to take less money. Country Flour 31,874 sacks, foreign 0,448 barrels. A good demand was still existing for France at advancing prices, some holding Norfolks at 40s. Barrels were fully Is. higher and few offering. Maize none. Without supplies this grain to-day was weak, with but small demand. British Barley 3,243 qrs., foreign none. English malt- ing qualities were a slow sale, but foreign grinding were firm. The Malt trade remained very dull, with prices unaltered. English Oats 1,259 qrs., Scotch 30 qrs., foreign 4,243 qrs. All sorts, notwithstanding the very limited supplies, were very dull and rather cheaper to sell. Native Beans 1,4VO qrs., foreign 7 qrs. The trade was quiet with prices unchanged. There was only short supplies of both Beasts and Sheep on sale here to-day, but the general quality of the animals was good. The Scotch Beasts, of which there were 170 in the market, came to hand in excellent condition, but there were some very rough animals from Ireland. Owing to the depression in the carcase trade, there was very little animation in the demand, and a severe fall in prices was only prevented by the limited numbers offering. Best Scots cannot be quoted above 5s. 8d. to 5s. lOd. per 8 lbs., and the latter figure was somewhat exceptional. From Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, and Cambridgeshire we received about 1,500 Scots and Crosses from other parts of England about 250 of various breeds from Scotland 108 Scots, and from Ireland about 120 Oxen, Cows, &c. With only about eleven thousand Sheep in the pens, trade ruled dull, butchers being able to buy their meat dead on easier terms. Best Down wethers sold at 6s., but prices, as a rule, were scarcely equal to those current Last Monday. Calves were unchanged in value. Pigs nominal. Per 8 lbs. to sink the offal. s. d. s. d. Notwithstanding the limited scale on which business is progressing there is much firmness in the quotations for all classes of wool, holders looking forward with con- fidence to the future. Sales however are small, the exorbitant demands made by the Germans having caused much depression in the yarn and piece trade. TALLOW MARKET, FEB. G. Y. C. on the spot is quoted at 45s. 6d. per cwt. Inferior samples sold at irregular rates, and occasionally rather lower. American qualities were held somewhat higher, there being buyers of this description still for France. Trefoil sold steadily 011, former terms. English Kapeseed com- manded very high prices, being scarce. In Canaryseed and large Hem psecd no quotable change. THE MINING MARKET.
THE MINING MARKET. FROM THE MINING JOURNAL. REMARKS. -The last week has been in some degree more eventful than its predecessors, our markets having exhibited greater animation than for some time past. A speculative feeling has manifested itself, and large con- tracts entered into in certain descriptions of metals at advancing prices. Indeed, early in the week there were not wanting indications of a rapid, and yet steady, im- provement, the growth of which, however, has been suddenly checked upon the publication of the supposed terms of peace.
