Saturday to Monday's Posts. LONDON, FEB. 2] FROM THE LONDON GAZETTE. ADMIRAI.TY-OFFICE, FEB. 21. BISPATCHES, dated the 31st of last month and 1st. inst have been received at this Office from the Hon. Capt. Spencer, of his Majesty's ship Naiad (who had been directed to proceed to Algiers to make, in conjunction with his Majesty's Consul at titttRfgency, a re- monstranceagitinst some lite proceedings of the Dey),- stating, that his negociation had ended unsatisfactorily, and that the Consul was obliged to strike the British flag, and embark on board his Majesty's ship. Capt. Spencer further reports, that havmg met an Algerine corvette, he felt it, under his instruc- tions, his duty to attack her, and that she was laid on board, and captured in the most handsome manner, by his Majesty's brig Camelion, when Capt. Spencer had the satisfaction to find that he had rescued seventeen Spaniards, whom the Algerine was carrying into slavery. [The Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty will immediately appoint convoys, to afford pro- tection to the trade thrd' the Straits of Gibraltar, and within the Mediterranean, until the differences with the Regency of Algiers shall be arranged.] We have received the Paris papers of Wednesday' and the Etoile dated yesterday. The latter contains the articles of the Decrees issued by Ferdinand, respecting a free trade with South America. If, however, we rightly understand the last of these articles, the whole thing is a mere delusion. This article enacts, that until the two preceding arti- cles shall be perfectly executed, there shaH be no innovations in the actual state of the commerce of America." Now, the perfect execution of the se- cond and third articles is practicable only upon the assumption that Spain possesses an entire and uncontrolled sovereignty over her former Colonies. This, however, is notoriously an absurd fiction. The Moniteur of the 14th inst. contains an amusing document, a Royal Decree of Ferdinand, establshing a Sinking Fund of eighty millions of teals a year for the liquidation ot the National Debt. The French Papers announce the marriage of lvli" Zea, only daughter of the late M. Zea. of financial notoriety, to a French Viscount and Lieutenant Colonel in the army. She is stated to carry with her a portion equal to 12,000 dollars per annum, which income, when the widow's jointure is added thereto, supposes a very considerable capital to have been left by a person who, when he left.this. country to go over to Colombia in 1817, ,wal indebted to friends for his outfit. So much for -the financial operations of the late M. Zea! Very interesting information relative to the affairs of Greece has been received in London. The Hon. Leicester Stanhope, who had been for some time attempting to form a corps of artillery, lias at length succeeded to the utmost extent of his wishes, and now boasts that the Greeks have a force more than sufficient to reduce all the for- -tresses in the hands of the Turks. Mr. Stanhope was receiving assurances of support from all parts of Greece with earnest requests that he would intercede with England to procure pecuniary and other means for the estabtishment of national schools throughout the country. Lord Byron con- tinues the soul of the Greek caus6, and is every where popular. Letters have been received, dated Missolonghi, 30th December, stating that Patras was capitula- ting, and that the terms were in process ot beni" SeU. onnn G /eekS arC abuUt to attack Lepaino) and 2000 Suhotes are associated under Morocor dato for this purpose. There is very little doubt of their success. ——— The King, just as he was about to step into his carriage, at Carlton Palace, on Wednesday after- noon, to return to Windsor Castle, was required to sign the Commission appointing Lord Chief Justice Gifford to act as Lord Chancellor and Lord Keeper, in the House of Lords; in the absence of the Lord Chancellor." The Commission revokes the appointment of Sir Thos. Abbott, Chief Justice of the King's Bench, bearing date March 5, in the 59th of the late King,,to act as Deputy Speaker. The King had it is said, been pleased to remit the sentence of death of the Court-Martial on Missionary Smith, in Demerara (which sentence had been accompanied by,)). recommendation for mercy, on the part of the Crown), and to direct that he should be dismissed from the colony, and be called upon to enter into recognizances not to reside within any of his Majesty's colonial pos- -sessionsintheWestIndies. In the Court of Exchequer on Wednesday, two -soap manufacturers, Messrs. Hattpn and Jackson of Warrington, were mulcted in the penalty of 6,3401. ifor defrauding the revenue. Messrs.Mottand Drouet, ofSt.Mary's Newington, -have retaken the contract for farming the poor of the parish of A'lverstoke, Hants, for twelve months at 2s. 9d. per week each individual; the contractors to have the benefit of their labour. The Prospectus of the Greek Loan is now in general circulation. The Loan is already at a ^premium of 3 percent. In consequence of the still existing differences ^between the London Dock Company and the Russia Merchants, the latter have it in contemplation to ,erect New Doeks, at St. Catherine's, which will he appropriated-chiefly to the reception of vessels trading to the Baltic. The workmen have commenced their labour in excavating the bed of the river, for the foundation of the intended New London Bridge. A large gun- -br)g, on board of which is erected a steam apparatus, is placed opposite Iron Wharf, Thames-street; such is the power ot the steam, in raising the ballast, by weans of revolving iron buckets, that three barges were yesterday fille^ in half an hour. A plan for a, tlunlellllider, the Thames at tiotherhithe, seems likely to be, carried into effect. A similar scheme was attempted .some years ago and laid aside; hut' the-presjht project is formed on more scientific principles The name of M. ontnel, the inventor, is a stifficitfht guarantee for the skill and ability pf the.-scheme; but we may add that the meeting of yesterday w«s attended by ititree of our-jriost distinguished Engineers, who all concurred in admiration 1,1' jhf plan and in recom- ^Mendiug itffor adoption.
