■ Tuesday night last, the Right Hon. Lord Cawdor gave a .splendid ball to -the^genjry, &c. of the town and neighbourhood oLCarinarthen, at the Guild- hall, and such a magnificent display of beauty and fashion was never before witnessed on any similar occasion., At nine o'clock the bail was opened by his Lordship and the charming young widow, Mrs. Davies, of Lhvyd-Jack, with the much-admired dance of Sir David Hunter Blair-, they were fol- lowed by Major Evans, of the Carmarthenshire mi- litia, (of, which Lord Cawdor is Colonel) and the elegant and, graceful Lady Cawdor. Although the place was, excessively crowded, yet the dancingwas kept up with much vicacity tial one in the monliug, when the company sat down to refreshments of coffee, tea, cake, wines, &c. &c. and separated about three, equally delighted with the pleasure of the night'and the noble Peer's munificence — Arhong. the brilliant assemblage were iioticed, (exclusive of Lord and Lady Cawdor, Mrs. Davies of Llwyd- Jack, and Major Evans before-mentioned) Sir Wm. Paxton, lady and daughter; Mr. Philipps, of Cwm- gwilly, lady and daughter; Mr. Hughes of Tregih, and lady Mrs. Lloyd, of Abertrinant, and daugh- ter; Mrs. and Miss John Lloyd; the Misses Owen, of- Waun-fvor; Mr. Saunders, jun. and the Misses Saunders, of Cdanrwhwdw;. Mansell, of Iscoed, &c. (Stc. i 1'" The Swause.a Subscriptidi? Jtunt. had iieir first dinner on Tuesday last, at the Bush-inn, in this .towii. Friday'last, .the Royal Pembrokeshire regiment, commanded by Lord Kensington; the Royal Miners, commanded by Major Glyn; the iiidepenident lLt- vertbrdwest volunteers, commanded by Col. Scour- lieid; the Prendergast independent volunteers, com- manded by Capt..john Matbias; the Pembroke vo- lunteers, commanded by Capt. Mansell; Lord Caw- dor's two troops of yeomanry cavalry, Col., Roch's troop of yeomanry cavalry, -Lord Dynevor's two troops ofjt eomanry cavalry, Sir Hugh Owen's two troops of yeomanry cavalry/with two smad trains of artillery, were reviewed-on Portfteld, near Haver- fordwest, by General Gascoyne. After the usual m-inoeuvres, which were performed with a correct- nehS highly creditable to the several corps, they took up different stations, and comtneneed. a sham ligKt. The weather, uniortunately, was most un- favourable, and much diminished the pleasure of a spectacle which wouid otherwise have proved truly splendid. It did. not, however, in the least abate the ardour of the troops; the attack and defence was conducted with great, spirit and effect; and the celerity, precision, and steadiness with which the various evolutions were executed, afforded the highest gratification to the General and niapy mi- litary characters present, who expressed their admi- ration and satisfaction in terms of the most unqua- lified praise. Friday morning last the first battalion of;Brecon- shire volunteers, having compleated their term of permanent duty at Hereford, quitted that city on their return home, and reached Brecon on Satur- day, after a. fatiguing march through an incessant rain, which rendered the Toads extremely bad. They arrived at Brecon in high spirits, where they were received with ringing of bells, and every to- ken, of regard and esteem which could possibly be manifested by their admiring friends and fellow- townsmen and the men were afterwards enter- tained by their officers with a handsome dinner in the Town-hall.—The conduct of the corps while at Hereford was truly exemplary, and gained them the universal esteem of the inhabitants, who view- ed thpir departure with regret; and their, assi'ducus attention to military duty, unequivocally demon- strated their anxiety to become, what their officers with unremitting zeal endeavour to render thenr- efficient soldiers, Six companies of the loyal Newborough volun- teers (the two light infantry companies being-sta- tioned in and near Coiiway) vyere' reviewed and in- spected a few days since, near Carnarvon, by Major General Heron, who expressed his warmest com- mendation of their conduct, and said he should re- port them fit for any service whatsoever.—-During the last war, the regiment* consisted of 750 rank and file.—-The comrnissionfd, non-commissioned officers, and private volunteers, are all the tenants jf Lord' Newborough, except the Serjeant-Major. Capt. Mansell, with a detachment of the 53d re- giment, has been ordered "to march from Canter- oury-to Leeds, to re9eive the army of reserve.. The Marquis and Marchioness of Bute are ar- riveu at Boconnoc, the seat of the late Lord Ca- indford/nMr Lostwithiel, in Cornwall, attended oy. ft numerous retinue, They intend spendino the winter at that place, on account of the Mar- chiohtss's ill healthy David Jones, Esq. banker, of Llandovery, has been sworn into the office of Bailiff of that ancient town for the ensuing year. A .notonim^ Impostor, and Swindler.^A Villain of" 'his desciiptiot rhas recently imposed upon the unsuspecting generosity 0f the Welsh character, to -Y.9. an extent un exampled, we believe, in our modern Annals of depredation and infamy. The scene of his operations has-been as yet chiefly in Carmar ihenshire, and on the borders of Cardiganshire and the mere recital of his enormities which have' already come-to our knowledge, would greatly ex- ceed our confined limits. We shall, however, par- ticularize a tew of the most prominent, in the hope "of ( I at least of checking hisjurther career, if not of pro- -c in ducing detection and ultimatepunishment: hehas at, different times assumed the names of Thomas Jones, William Rees, George Watkins, Griffith Ro- bert, Tbomas Williams, Thomas Griffiths, &c. &c. and by pretending to'be the s'on of a dissenting preacher known to two persons in Carmarthen^ shire of that persuiisiou, obtained five guineas from each of them; he also got 6ve guineas from a far- uier,, in the same county, after making a fictitious bargain to sell liira 100 bushels of oats; and seven guiiieas from -another farmer of whom he promised to buy a lot of butter. By representing himself to a most respectable attorney as the son of a client of his, he likewise obtained five guineas; and has duped many other persons of various sums under similar pretences..He lately went to a farm-house below Carmarthen, and expressed a wish to pur- chase some oxen but as the farmer was then a;o- ing from home, an appointment was made for the next morning before they parted, at a short dis- tance from the house, be enquired the time of the day, and on the farmer pulling out his watch, the other, appeared quite pleased with it;,ind ur¡yed the farmer to dispose o.f it/which he declined :ithe pretended cattle-buyer,, however, at length suc- ceeded in borrowing the watch till the next day. leaving three guineas in the farmer's hands by way of security. No sooner was the latter out of sight, than the artful villain returned to the house, and told the farmer's wife he had been transacting bu- siness with her husband, and that she was to give him 201. at the same time producing the watch to confirm the truth of his statement: the woman ac- cordingly gave him the sum required, upon which he decamped with both watch.and' money. Hap- pening to be in an ale-house, at another time, where two gentleman were treating for a small estate, lie screened himself as much as possible from their notice, and, attentively listened to the nature of the contract: the next day he called on the purchaser, stated himself to be the son of the person Who had sold .the estate, arid making'an apology for troubling, him so early after the conclusion of the bargain" ..requested to have 601. in part of the .purchase nio- ■ ney^ his father having had an uneKpecieci demand which he could not conveniently, satisfy without such .assistance: ,the gentleman seeing o.o-cause to doubj thc.trutH of,his story, readiiyxG.mjilied; and iound too late tha.t he had: been gfosslytiiiijibsed upon.—j"h4s notorious offender is apparently about SO years of age, five feet six inches .high, and 'of a dark complexion he possesses a good address, and insinuating-manners-, to which the success Of his schemes may be attributed. "He was in custody on two occasions, but we are soriy to say that he was suffered to escape on making restitution to the injured parties. He has now continued his nefa- rious practices about two months with impunitv, and is supposed to be still lurking in some part. oi Carmarthenshire. We hope, however, that justice will speedily overtake aria put a final period to his iniquity. It is proposed to erect a cast iron bridge, of mag- nificent construction.havmgotny one arch 200 feet in height, under which ships "of any inaptitude may sail lull rigged, to extend from Clifton-Down, near the old windfrull, to Leigh-Down.—This will, in addition to the improvement of Bristol harbour, be one highly advantageous to the inhabitants of that, city, and the country-adjacent. The rosin and turpentine manufactory of Messrs. Gore and Clare, in Liverpool, was destroyed by fireLast week. In the evening of Monday last, a fire broke out in the retail shop adjoining the cotton manufactory in Coleham,near-Shrewsbury, which had made con- siderable progress before it "was discovered. The inside of the shop, and the greater part of the! stock.cohsisting of printed goods, muslins, dimi- ties, &c. wrere destroyed and, but for the very laudable, spirited', and active exertions of several respectable gentlemen, the neighbours, firemen, &c. it is supposed a^great-part of those extensive premises must have fallenaprcyto the devouring element. This dreadful a-cciaent is believed to have been caused by a young cat getting under the fire-grate in the adjoining room, on whose, back some burning coals had fallen, set fire to it, and taking remgeinthe sliop, :the fire was. communi- cated to some cottons, which immediately spread* ing, ended as above." WrbststoAv, Oct. Si: Pans papers t6 the 24th were received ttijs. after: ftoon, lUll: following a-ticie, though professing to ÓU,I1C from I'etersl/urgii, .was most probably fatm- at i'aris :— PetcTsbllrgh, Oct: 1. •"•The Emperor of Russia having been informed that the Count De Liiic had quitted Warsaw, and was going to Russia, where he was to have the con- ferences announced before hand with persons ex- pected from England, would not suffer those con- ferences to take place in his States. He has made known to the Count De Lille, that having had re- lations with the French Government, having signed with it several treaties, and that Government hav- ing been recognised in Russia, since the treaty of labl, he would not suffer any thing to take place which might induce it to be thought that the Court of Russia had changed its system and opinion upon the subject." According to private accounts, the intercourse between this country and Holland may be consi- dered as closed, several of our merchants having received notice to ship no more goods for the Dutch ports, as a declaration has been issued, that all ves- sels, and their cargoes, will be confiscated, which have not been cleared out from a neutral port, and furnished with certificates from the French Censul .resident there.. Yesterday morning an express arrived at thelndia- House, with intelligence of the safe arrival, at Plymouth. of three East-Iiidiamen, viz. the Lady Castlereagh, Capt. Edmeades; Preston, Capt. Sturroek; and Europe, Capt. Crelston, all from Bengal. The above shipR: came the most considerable part-of the way without any convoy whatever. By them we are sorry to learn, that there is every reason to tear the total loss ot the Prince of Wales off the Cape, with every soul on feaa-ifrd, -■- These vessels left Bengal in -April? and conse- quently cari bring no information respecting the &cti.&n which is said to have tajcen place between a deta-chmentof the British army, under the com- mand of Col. Murray, and a body of Holkar's army, on the-8th q,f May, and in which the British troop- are stated to have received a check. fs(o coiifirjna* tlon of this event his reached the Indiarfiouse, and therefore the stateihcnt entirely rests upon the au- thority of private letters. Letters from Dublin, of the 25th, received yes- terday, mention the arrest of some persons in the county of Carlow, charged with a conspiracy of an extensive nature, comprehending a minute detail of operations, and intimately connected with an im- mediate expectation of French assistance, and, it is said, with an intended systernof assassination or persons of consequence. Their papers were seized, and ihey underwent an examination before the J'tivy Council on the 25th, but no particulars had' transpired. The names of the principal prisoners 5 1 Ir e acre, Joha Murphy, of Moneybag, farmer, supposed to be a man in the receipt of TOUl. a year; Michael Mor in, brewer,, of Leigiifin-brtdge and Thomas | Kinsdielagh, of the same piacc, shopkeeper.—The betters add a. report that some of the emissaries Of the French Government had induced several de- luded people in the counties of Kildare and Car- low to accept commissions • but the vigilance oi CroveTnmentwiiLwe have no doubt, frustrate their intentions, and as the plot has been coinpleatiy de- weiuped, the public have no "serious cause for alarm.
