THE COCTXTY SCLIOOL. -The an)iutl concert, distribu- tion of prizes aud Oxford T" Local Examination certificates took place at t.ie Victoria Hall, Bala, on Friday evening, December 14 h, before a good number of friends of the School from the tr:wn and neighbour- hood, The Headmaster reaa a short report, and among successes of oid boys since last prize day in July, 1893, he mentioned the following: Mr E D. Jones obtained h;s M.A. degree at London University, and has been appointed headmaster of Barmouth Inter- mediate School Mr T. G. Rubens to- k his B.A. at London University in the first divo-ion, and has been IIwartled a scholarship of f50 by tl-ic- Universivy College of North Wal -s for the study of French at the University of Paris Tlioma, Roberta and D. M. Edwards passed the intermediate examination cf London University John V\ iliiann won the medal for botany at the Westminster College of Chemistry. In July last the School M «A examined by order of tho County Governing Body, and in his report of the examination Principal Roberts, of Aberystwyth University College, said that the School is in a high state of efficiency both as regards discipline and methods of instruction. In .July also Bala was a centre for the Oxford Local Examination. The School sent in 14 candidates and IS passed, viz. :—First class honours W. B. Hughes, with oistinction in English and Greek second class honours R. Ll. Jones, with distinction in English and Latin. and John Roberts, with distinction in English, being 11th of all England third class honours E. R Owen The following were in tre pass list D. E. JLANYBYTIIH. I PRESENTATION.—At a public meeting, recently held at the Town Hall (Mr James Thomas, Rhj-dybotit, in the chair), it was proposed, seconded, aud unanimously resolved to present ¡ Mr Pearson, stationmaster, with a testimonial on the occasion of his marriage. Mr Pearson has been stationrnaster at Llan- ybyther nearly 15 years, and it was thought that all who knew him would only be too pleased to evince their regard and respect for one who had discharged his duties amongst them for many years in so satisfactory a manner. Every trader in the town and neighbourhood readily subscribed, and also every commercial traveller who visited Tdanybyther, and a nurse of £21 was soon got together. The presentation took place in the Town Hall, on Friday evening, December 14th. In the unavoidable absence of Mr B. Vavies:Ev,ans,. High- I mead, who wrote a kind letter regretting his inability to be present, the Vicar, the Rev J. Morris, was unanimously voted to the chair. Mr Jarnes Tho-oas, coal merchant spoke in high praise of Mr Pearson, saying that he had had dealings with him longer thas anyone in the neighbourhood, and he could say that in all his dealings he had always found him very obliging and straightfor.vm-d. Mr Thomas made a humourous speech, and kept the audience in roars of laughter throughout. A letter was read from the Rev Henry Jones, rector of Eglwys Cynmiin, sayins: that it would have given hi.n and Mrs Jones much pleasure to be present if they possibly could come, but he was sorry to say that he had other engagements. He dwelt upon Air Pearson's good qualities, and enclosed a good sum towards the purse. Mr Pearson was then called upon to receive the presentation, which was made by Miss Polly Evans, Windsor Cottage. Mr Pearson on rising to respond, appeared deeply moved, and said Mr Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, and friends all,—I am afraid that some of you have been telling libs about me this evening, especially our friend Mr -lanies Thomas, and I am also very much afraid that I shall not be able to express my feelings to you as I should wish. When I first heard of this movement being set on foot I was surprised, for I am quite at a loss to know what I have done to deserve so much kindness. It is exceedingly kind of you all. Why, .f have received many a little favour from lots of you at different times, and I thought I had been amply repaid for everything whieh 1 hall done for either of you. Certainly, f have been amongst you many years, and I hope I shall be amongst you for many years more. Ever since I came here my first consideration has been, and always will lie. the interests of the Railway Company. I will tll yun why. U ways think that:while you are looking after your employer's interests, you are looking after your own at the same time. My second con- sideration, though no doubt equally important, is the con- venience of the public and if there was any little favour which I could do for anyone lit any time, it mattered not to me who the person was, whether rich or poor, church or chapel, Tory or Liberal if you like, I always tried to do it, if I could do it without injuring myself of course. I must not sing my own praises, but I will say this. In my dealings with you all through 1 have tried to follow what was true, and I have always tried to follow what was reasonable and honest, and I suppose tins presentation this evening is my reward. I thank you very much indeed on behalf of my wife and myself for your very kind wishes, Diolch yn fawr iawn i bob un. Mr David Felix, or fi.D.C., Lampeter, Mr Davies, cabinet-maker, the Rev Mr •>onus, of Rhydybont, the Rev Henry James, Aberduar, the Rev Mr Davies, curate, aud others also spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Pearson Mr Joshua Evans, Emporium, and party sang a quartette; Messrs David Evans, David Hughes, aud Rowlands each sang a song. Mr Pearson was called for a song, lie san.tr them one of Mr Price's, of Ffaldybrenin, favourite comic (Welsh) songs, the audience all joining in the chorus. A hearty vote of thanks having been accorded tile N-irar for the. able .ind genial manner in which he had tilled the chair, he briefly responded, saying that it was a great pleasure to him to be present, and that it had been a ;„ost orderly meeting throughout. The meeting terminated with the song, "Fr he's a Jolly good fellow," the whole comnanv iu^n-tilv joining.

The CHAIRMAN (thinking Mr Peter Jones was about to criticise the action of the magistr ates)—Ah Mr PETKR JUNES at once said he wis not going to discuss the decisions of the niag -trites, but merely pointed out that they did not consider it a very serious offence. Knowing that that was tlie state of things existing in the district;, and that that was the opinion of the magistrates, he thought.the Committee ought to attempt, if they possibly could, to do away with the introduction of police from ether districts. With regard to Peubryn several members of that Committee had attended tithe sales and had rendered excellent service. He did not aspire to that position, but no doubt if their esteemed friend. Mr Tobit Evans, being a native of Peubryn, and a supporter of peace, even ac any price, that being one of the articles of his par- ticular faith, well down,no doubt he would be able to render great assistance. Mr C. M. WILLIAMS—There would be a greater riot if he went down. Mr PETER JOEs-Therdore, I heartily support the proposition. The CHAIRMAN pointed out with regard to the smallness of the fine, if the newspaper report was correct, it was made Is. because the costs were be- tween F.2 and £ 3. Mr PETER J oEs-I wish to state the fine in order to show that the offence was not considered serious. The CHAIRMAN—And I wish to state the reasons otherwise it may give a wrong impression. Mr POWELL nsked if the police assisted the Bailiff to enter the farms ? The CHIEF CONSTABLE replied in the negative but said that when the Bailiff was pushed b:ck from the top of a fence the police assisted because he (the Chief Constable) thought the people had no right to prevent the Bailiff when he had succeeded in getting to the top of a fence. Mr MORGAN EVANS asked if there was not. a legal point raised at a certain farm? The Bailiff having once entered a farm came out on to the road again he- fore he could find anything to distrain upon, and was there not a legal point raised that he bad no rigLt to force entry the second time ? The CHIEF CONSTABLE replied in the affirmative, ad- ding that the people contended that the Bailiff had no right of second entry. They also said they had been well advised in that matter. Mr MORGAN EVANS asked if that was not the thing that brought the matter te a point. The CHIEF CONSTABLE—Y< S Mr MORGAN EVAS-Al)d you took upon yourself to decide a legal point whether they were right or not, because, as I understand the case, they objected to again entering on acocuat The CHAIRMAN was afraid that that was discussing the matter. The motion to adjourn was before the meeting, aDd if that was carried it ended the discus- sion on the report. Mr ARTHUR JONES said the Chief Constable had ap- plied to the Committee for assistance. He had done j' all he could by persuasive power and had not suc- ceeded though he had succeeded to a certain extent. He (Mr Joues) therefore though'; it the duty of EIK- Committee to assist him, and moved that his applica- tion for additional power should be granted. Mr D. C. ROBERTS wished to say that he felt that as a Committee they must support the Chief Constable in matters of that kind. Colonel EYAs-Hcar, hear, Mr D. C. ROBERTS, at the same time felt tnat the proposition was certainly the wiser one for the Com- mittee to take that day. That was a very serious matter, and before taking a serious step of tha". kind it was well that the matter should be carefully con- sidered both by the Commitlee and by the people of Penbryn. They would see the report of that meeting, and also the report of the Chief Constable, and when they saw that toe matter was delayed in order that it might be considered in a proper Court, perhaps in two or three months the irritation and friction that hud been occasioned would have passed off, and tithes would be able to be collected at Penbryu as they had been in other parts of the country since he carried a proposition some three years ago. He was sure they would all agree that they must of necessity support the Chief Constable when the time came unless other means succeeded. He hoped that other means would vet succeed. Colonel DAVIES-EVA.NS seconded the amendment, considering it their bounder; duty as police authority to back up their executive officer. He acknowledged that he could not carry out the law with the force at his command. He had applied to the Committee to Strengthen his hands, and the Committee ought to pay attention to his application. He (the speaker) had the greatest confidence in the Chief Constable, and was sure he would not have applied unless he felt it absolutely necessary to do so, and if granted he would not use a larger force than was absolutely required. He (Colonel Evans) therefore seconded the amendment that the Committee should strengthen the hands of the Chief Constable, leaving it to his discretion to use what means he req ired. Mr J. M. HOWELL supported the proposition, but on different grounds to those hitherto taken. The people of Penbryn had trusted the Committee in carrying out the 6ales on the lines of moral suasion. The resolution Vvas that the Chief Constable should invito the co-oneration of members residing in the district. That was oone. except on the occasion when the riot broke forth. There were no members in attendance, and had had no invitation to be present. The CHIEF CONSTABLE said he did not know in what direction he would go. He simply informed the members of the sales. Mr J. M. HOWELL was afraid they must trace the mischief to that oversighta-r whatever itmight be called. Mr WILLIS BHND hoped it would not be considered that in moving the proposition be was doing anything to weaken the hands of the Chief Constable. No member of the Committee thought the-Chief Constable ought to be supported and was prepared to support him more strongly than he. They cold, however, give more effectual support when they knew precisely how the matter stood. Mr CHARLES LLOYD thought it unfortunate that the Committee could not arrive at some unanimous con- clusion. It would be a pity if the Committee were divided on a point of backing up the Chief Constable or not. Mr D. C. Koberts demurring Mr Charles Lloyd admitted that it was not quite that, but it did happen to be something in that way. Mr ToJHT EVANS admitted that the people of Pen- bryn trusted the Committee, as had been said but certain members of the Committee had left them in the lurch. When John Thomas stood in that dock charged with an indictable offence, nut a single member of that Committee was there to support him. (Laughter).
