REVIEW OF THE BRITISH CORN…
REVIEW OF THE BRITISH CORN TRADE. The drying winds of the past week have been favour- able to farmers about to commence sowing,3 of spring corn. The return of frost, while unpleasant for human beings, has not been keen enough to injure the growing wheat in England. The French fields, however, which are more advanced than ours, can hardly have been benefited. The price of Eflglish wheat has been staady at the majority of markets, including Mark Lane, where at the February price of 33s.2d. per qr. sales since March came in have increased from 1,481 to 2,976 qrs. The list of country markets holding quietly to old prices outnumbers those changing values. Of the latter there is a majority in favour of buyers, but the minority are later in dite than the majority. If Salisbury was cheaper on Tuesday firmness prevailed on Friday at Yeovil westward, and at Southampton eastward of the Wiltshire centre. Again, on Wednesday Suffolk, as represented by Bary St Edmunds, was lB. cheaper, but Essex on Friday, as re- presented by Chelmsford, was Is. dearer, and Norfolk on Saturday, as represented by Norwich was firm. With respect to foreign wheat the week's changes tare merely fractional and local. The Liverpool market on Friday was a penny per cental dearer on the week, but London refused to endorse the advance. Scotland has been against sellers, Edinburgh and Glasgow quoting barely previous prices for foreign wheat and 6d. decline on American fljur. Ireland, on the other hand, reports a rise in foreign wheat of 2s 6d. per ton at Belfast and Dublin. The American shipments continue large to the Continent, which helps to support the British market, seeing that the total American surplus is a fixed quantity, and the more the Continent takes the less is likely to be pressed on the English market. India is shipping freely for the time of year, but this is balanced by Australia being only a very moderate exporter, ,[ l •; J" i.

LONDON CORN, Monday.—The London Maik.-t to-day presented no very clear or decided tendency. In English wheat full prices are made, and the enquiry is better from a week ago. There is an improvement in condition which quite explains this. At the same time the response which the market has made with improved quality is so far satisfactory. Foreign wheat, on the other hand, is neglected, though the arrivals since March 1st are below the average. Flour is cheaper, 6d. for English, and 9d. to Is. for most American sorts. This is an admission which is sullenly resisted, but it has to be made all the same. Barley is in better request for seeding sorts, but grind- ing descriptions hang fire, though prices are maintained. Oats are called firm, but except for heavy sorts, which are scarce, not much business was to be noticed. Beans and peas are unchanged. Maize is 3d. dearer the recent depression is somewhat beightenrd by the discovery that very little of the Argentine surplus wil! be to hand before Midsummer. Linseed is steady, and tares are in slightly improved request. LEICESTER CORN, Saturday.—Full supply-of wheat good attendance samplea in better condition; fine samples ic fair demand, inferior flat.
