BARMOUTH DRAINAGE. SIR,-I see in last week's Cambrian News a letter which confirms my previous statements with regard to the harbour outflow. The Board, it seems, are getting up a petition in favor of what, according to their officials, was never thought of. Now that time has shown my statements to be correct, notwithstanding official denials, perhaps the engineer or clerk will let us have the estimates for the pumpiniz apparatus, which would do away with the second outflow, and also for the making of the harbour outflow. If these are given we can see the sum to save which the Board is going to destroy the fame of Barmouth as a health resort. Sanitas" puts the case before the people of Barmouth in a proper light, but if he will excuse a fellow-worker in the same cause, I will take exception to one remark. He says with regard to river pollution, the less people know of the subject the more nervous they are, and apt to magnify its dangers." Now I take it the dangers that would accrue from the drainage being washed ashore, and undergoing decomposition can- not be exaggerated. We all know the heat of the sum- mer's sun at Barmouth is very great, and the sewage and seaweed would raise such a stench as few could stand. I would suggest another petition against the harbour out- flow. I am sure most people of sense would sign it, and then the Board would have to purchase pumping appara- tus. If only one petition be presented to the Board of Trade, although the signatures may be few, yet it may be made to appear as the general wish of the Barmouth people, and the object will be gained. Therefore, if somebody would take a little trouble, and get up a counter-petition, Barmouth would be saved from what otherwise would be a crying evil. If the clique in favour of the second outlet have their way in some future date, long before he is due at Lo -idon Bridge, Macaulay's New Zealander may come and sit on Towyn Martin and gaze on the ruins of-say the Cors-y-gedol, for that would be the biggest ruin of them all. Barmouth depends chietly on its healthiness, and the surrounding scenery, amusements being very few, so that if it loses its character as a health resort, other places around would speedily take away the majority of the visitors.—I am, &c., VIKING.

IMPERIAL PARLIAMENT. .I'V'\I' HOUSE OF LORDS.-FRIDAT. Some information was asked for by Lord Sidmouth in regard to the number of arms and the warlike stores sur- rendered by the natives in Zululand.—Earl Cadogan §ointed out that the information was contained in the outh African correspondence which had been published. He added that the chiefs, including John Dunn, had all signed a declaration that they would neither allow nor encouracre the importation of arms.—Earl Delawarr raised a discussion on the Highways and Locomotives Act ss Amendment Bill, which was defended by the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, He declined to indicate what course might be taken in regard to the measure by the next Government.—Lord Bury was unable to say when the report of the Commission on brigade depdta and short service would be circulated. HOUSE OF COMMONS.—FEinAT. Mr. Lowtber said the Chancellor and Senate of the new Irish University had been appointed, but owing to the elections it might not be possible for the Senate to meet for some time.—Mr. Bourke, in reply to rr. Maclver, said there was reason to believe that the Prince of Bulgaria was actuated by the sincerest desire to give full effect to the stipulations of the Berlin Treaty.—The Chancellor of the Exchequer stated that the cost of bringing the Indian troops to Europe and back was 2796,670, the whole of which was English expenditure, and that a further sum of £50,000 was in dispute.—Mr. Fawcett subsequently moveAta resolution expressing the opinion that it was un- just to defray out of the Indian revenues the whole of the cost incurred in the renewal of hostilities in Afghanis- tan.—After some discussion, in which Mr. Gladstone, Mr. Rathbone, Mr. Maclver, and other gentlemen took part, the amendment was rejected without a division. HOUSE OF LORDS—SATURDAY. There was a special sitting of the House of Lords to ac- celerate the progress of Bills preparatory to the dissolution. The Bill to relieve the distress in Ireland was read a third time and passed; and a consolidated fund Bill was passed through all its stages. The Lancashire County Justices Bill was read a third time and passed. Several Bills were read a second time, and a Bill introduced by Lord Denman to facilitate interments was read a first time. HOUSE OF LORDS.—MONDAY. Lord Bury announced that the volunteer review at Brighton would be held on Easter Monday as first pro- posed, the law officers of the Crown being of opinion that it would be legal providing that no regular troops were brigaded with the volunteers.—Lord Stratheden and Campbell having called attention to the Eastern policy of the Government, and asked for a copy of the letter from the late Ameer of Afghanistan to the Sultan, Earl Gran- ville took the opportunity of criticising the Premier's electioneering manifesto. Earl Beaconsfield had often ex- pressed his belief in the eternal character of his Government, but Earl Granville believed that the result of the election would be disastrous to the Ministry. Lord Beaconsfield, in reply to Lord Stratheden and Campbell, said the,letter of which a copy was asked for was a forgery. Having replied to Earl Granville's criticism on his letter to the Duke of Marlborough, the Premier defended the Eastern policy of his Government, which had been adversely criticised by both the preceding speakers. The debate was continued by Earl Kimberley, Lord Cranbrook, and other speakers, ending in Lord Stratheden and Campbell withdrawing his motion for the production of the alleged letter. The Royal assent was given to several Bills, including that for the relief of the distress in Ireland. The Beer Dealers' Retail Licences Bill was read a third time, and several other measures were advanced a stage. HOUSE OF COMMONS.—MONDAY. Mr. Edward Jenkins gave notice of a cpiestion to the Home Secretary, whether he is aware, in view of the extraordinary operations on the stock exchange in Metropolitan Water Company shares, the secret of the Government Water Bill had been communicated by any one in the Home Office to any parties outside.—This was followed by a notice of motion by the O'Gorman Mahon, which is virtually a vote of censure on the Prime Minister for "libelling" the Home Rule party in his letter to the Lord-lieutenant of Ireland.—In reply to Mr. Dillwyn,the Chancellor of the Exchequer stated that he hoped to get through the business of the House so that both Houses could assemble at half-past one on Wednesday, the 24th, for the prorogation.—The Chancellor of the Exchequer afterwards moved the second reading of the Probates of Wills Bill, the general principles of which were vigorously condemned by Mr. Gladstone in an exhaustive speech.— The debate was continued by Sir H. S. Ibbetson, Mr. Dodson, Mr. Hubbard, Sir G. Balfour, and others. HOUSE OF LORDS.—TUESDAY. Resolutions were passed for continuing next session un- finished private Bills from the stage reached at the time of the dissolution. The Municipal Corporations Property Qualification Abolition Bill, by which it is proposed to substitute for the present property qualification the simple qualification that any one entitled to vote at municipal elections should be himself eligible for election, was read a second time. On the suggestion of the Premier, Lord Denman withdrew the Facilities for Interments Bill. The Bill proposed that burials might take place in church- yards without religious service.—Some other Bills were forwarded a stage, and their lordships adjourned at 7.20. HOUSE OF COMMONS.—TUESDAY. Mr. Cross, replying to questions put by Mr. Jenkins with regard to the Water Bill, stated that if Government found itself in the same position in the next Parliament, they would certainly deal with the subject of the Metro. politan water supply and he hoped to be able to submit a scheme that would command the confidence of all par- ties —On the motion for the second reading of the Parlia- mentary Elections and Corrupt Practices Bill, Mr. Anderson moved, as an amendment, the rejection of the Bill which was seconded by Sir George Campbell.—The Solicitor-General defended the measure, arguing that a change in the law was desired on^ both sides of the House. —After some discussion, Sir S. Northcote said the Bill wa3 designed to offer facilities to the working classes and poor voters, and he did not believe it would add to election expenses.—The Marquis of Hartington expressed regret that Government had not consented to withdraw the measure, and leave the new Parliament to deal with the subject. After some further discussion, it was decided on a division, by 82 votes to 55, to proceed with the Bill. In committee the Chancellor of the Exchequer assented to the exclusion of Scotland and of Ireland from the operation of the Bill, but a motion to put Wales in the same category did not meet with equal favour. Sir J. Lubbock appealed to the Government to withdraw the Bill. Subsequently, on a division, the pro- posal to exclude Wales was negatived by 48 to 27 votes. An amendment proposing to limit the duration of the Bill to December, 1881, was, on a division, defeated; and subsequently Clauses 2 and 3 were agreed to, and the House resumed. The probate of Wills, &c., Bill, and the Customs and Inland Revenue Bill passed through Com- mittee, and the two measures were amalgamated. The Fraudulent Debtors (Scotland) Bill was withdrawn and the House adjourned at a quarter-past nine o clock. HOUSE OF LORDS.-Wednesday There was a special sitting of the House of Lords, in which several Bills were advanced a stage. HOUSE OF COMMONS—WEDNESDAY. Despite the strenuous efforts of a small band of liberals, the Government forced forward the Corrupt P^a.c ? Bill, which legalises the payment of vehicles for bringing up voters at elections. It will be read a third timei to-day. The report of the Customs and Inland Revenue Bill, alter some trifling modifications, was agreed to.

ABERYSTWYTH. COUNTY COURT, FRIDAY, MARCH 12.-Before Homersham H. Cox, Esq., judge. Waddingham v. Olivero-His Honour, in answer to Mr. Edgar Atwood, stated that the papers relating to the action between J. Waddingham, Hafod, and Oliver, had only come to hand as he was leaving home, consequently he had been unable to give the case his consideration. He would endeavour to give his decision at the next Court. Lavington and Shakell v. William Evans.—The plaintiffs in this case, W. J. Lavington and F. Shakell of Austin Friars, London, executors of George Lavington, deceased, sued William Evans, late of Brynchwyth, farmer, for £40 for rent due Michaelmas, 1878, of Bryn- I I I I I- chwytn tarm, wmcn defendant occupied, ana aiso zo ior value of a slate slab belonging to deceased and removed by defendant. Evans put in a set-off of £21 for rent of a cottage at Brynchwyth farm, from the 29th September, 1875. to September, 1878 C7 for the execution of two pigsties, and £ 4 loss sustained by reason »f Mr. Laving- ton's having taken a portion of the farm for the purpose of planting; total of set-off, £ 32.—Mr. Joseph Evans (Mr. Griffith Jones's offices) appeared for plaintiffs, and Mr. Hugh Hughes, jun., for defendant. Mr. Joseph Evans said the principal question in*dispute was whofiet- Bwlchgwyre cottage formed pare of the farm let to defendant; whether in fact he had sub-let the cottage.— s 't i t,3,, Mr. Hughes stated that he laboured under a disadvantage in consequence of an agreement hiving been mislaid, but he bad another founded on the on that had been lost. He was prepared to pay the penalty if his Honour thought the document insufficiently stamped.—His Honour, in the course of argument, pointed out that an unstamped docu- ment could be taken as collateral evidence.—Mr. A. J. Hughes said he first saw defendant with reference to an application for rent. The document which he saw was properly stamped. It let all the farm of Brynchwyth and, though the document was missing, he could say from recollection that the cottage was not excepted. In reply to Mr Joseph Evans,Mr. Hughessaid he was aware of no document in which it was distinctly stated that Mr. Lavington and the defendant were to abide by the previous document.— His Honour said the agreement which had been produced clearly expressed a new tenancy. It therefore ought to be stamped.—Mr. Hughes said he would get it stamped.— Defendant said that the agreement produced was dated August 14th, 1875, and was founded on the original agree- ment by the previous tenant, Stephen Jones. The docu- ment was read to him (defendant). A man by the name of Thomas Evans lived in the cottage for many years. The cottage was on the farm, and rent had been paid for it to defendant's predecessor at the rate of S7 a-year. He (defendant) therefore made the same claim.—Mr. Hughes said it appeared that rent had been paid for the cottage to Mr. Lavington instead of to the defendant.—Defen- dant, continuing his evidence, said he had erected two pigsties, and he had been, given to understand that he would be compensated for doing so. The sum of £ 4 was the amount allowed by the valuers for the land which had been taken for planting.—By Mr. Joseph Evans Brynch- wyth Farm was 300 acres in extent. Though Thomas Evans had lived in the cottage for five years, he (defen- dant) had not distrained for rent. Mr. Harvey, who acted for Mr. Lavington, had said that if any land were taken for planting the rent would be reduced. The pig- sties were built at Mr. Harvey's request.—In answer to his Honour, defendant said that he built the pigsties in 1876, and be had paid rent every year since.-His Honour said there need be nothing further said about that portion of the case.—Mr. Hughes did not think that that was fair to his client. His Honour seemed to have taken a one- sided view of the case from the beginning. He must say that he thought his client was not getting justice.—His Honour did not think it was usual for advocates to address the Bench in that manner.—Mr. Hughes added that his Honour seemed to have rushed to a conclu- sion which was not warranted by what the de- fendant really said.—His Honour replied that it would be seen presently who was right. His Honour then examined defendant, and ascertained that the pigsty was built in 1876, that defendant had paid rent in the fol- lowing May, and had asked to be allowed the expense, and had been told that an allowance would be made though not at that time. Defendant therefore paid the rent in full.—His Honour then said that he had been blamed by Mr. Hughes for taking a decided view of the case because he did not believe defendant's story. If he were such an idiot as to do so the sooner some one else took his place the better.—Mr. Hughes said he was sure Mr. W. H. Thomas and everyone acquainted with the farming customs of the country would bear him out when he said that accounts such as the set-off were allowed to stand over for years. He would challenge any person in Court to contradict him.—Mr. Joseph Evans remarked that it was a most un- usual proceeding to appeal from the Bench to_persons in Court.—H:s Honour said if Mr. Hughes wished Mr. Thomas to give evidence he (Mr. Hughes) could put him into the box.—Mr. Hughes eventually apologized if he had spoken, in the heat of the moment, improperly to his Honour, but he thought that his Honour appeared to throw a doubt on every answer the defendant gave.— Defendant having stated that he put down a slab when he became tenant and took it away when he left. Mr. Evans said he would not press the claim for the slab.—Richard Harvey, agent to the late Mr. Lavington, who still managed the estate for tne executors, said in the agree- ment between Stephen Jones and Lavington the slopes by the river were reserved for planting purposes. Instead of causing loss to defendant it was likely to benefit him by creating a shelter. He did not promise to pay defendant for making the pigsties, but promised to consult Mr. Lavington on the subject. He did so, and Mr. Lavington refused. He valued the pigsties at 93. By Mr. Hughes It was distinctly stipulated that defendant was not to receive the rent of the cottage. After defendant took the farm the cottage wa3 let to a tenant for 4:5 a year. This rent was paid to Mr. Lavington's credit into the bank.—His Honour then said that the defendant could not possibly in the present action recover the S21 for the cottage, because assuming the rent were due to him he should before this have taken proceedings for its recovery. It could not be shown that any compensation for planting had been promised, but, •as a matter of justice, defendant should be allowed some- thing for erecting the pigsties as he had expended money on them. As the claim for the slab had been withdrawn he should give judgment for 240, less 24 compensation for the pigsties with costs. Davies v. Roderick. -.J oh n Davies, builder, Taliesin, claimed a guinea from David Roderick, farmer, Tarallt, for certain coffin trimmings, supplied to defendant after his wife's death. His Honour gave judgment for plain- tiff but without costs, because he had allowed the debt to remain unpaid for seven years. Benjamin v. The South Cambrian Mining Co.-Claim 216 14s. for work done by Thos. Benjamin, Goginan, during the month of October last. Mr. Hughes appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. Evan Evans (Messrs. Roberts and Evans), for the defendant.—The case was adjourned to the next Court. Jones v. Boundy.—J. Humphry Jones, plaintiff, Henry Boundy, defendant and Henry S. Boundy, claimant. Mr. Joseph Evans appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. Edgar Atwood for the claimant. Mr. Atwood said the claimant was the son of the execution debtor. This case had been adjourned in order that the claimant should produce de- tails of claim. The particulars delivered were to the effect that "the goods belonged to me." His Honour held that the particulars were insufficient and dismissed claimant's case with costs. Humphreys v. Green.-Mr. Hughes appealed to his Honour in the case of Humphreys v. Green, a case which had been referred to Mr. Isaac Morgan and Mr. David Williams, Vulcan-street. Mr. Williams had not con- sulted Mr. Isaac Morgan, but had sent in his award in- dependently of the other arbitrator.—His Honour said the Court would not require Mr. David Williams's service3 on another occasion, and appointed Mr. Davies, Troedybryn House, as sole arbitrator, Mr. Isaac Morgan declining to act. Construction of Judgment.—Mr. Hughes informed his Honour that there was some doubt as to the construction of a judgment entered by Mr. Hodgson, deputy judge, in certain cases of interpleader heard at the last Court.- The Judge then ordered that the proceeds of sale should be divided in the following way. First, cost of sale, second, cost of interpleader, third, bill of sale holder, and fourth, execution creditor. The amount realized was not sufficient to pay the whole of the first three sets of costs named in tha judgment. Mr. Hughes contended that the costs of interpleader meant only the costs of claimant, and Mr. Evans urged that the costs of the execution creditor were included, both parties having succeeded, the claimant having uphold the bill of sale, and the execution creditor having obtained the bill of sale which he sought.— His Honour directed the Clerk of the Court to write to Mr. Hodgson, asking what was the proper construction. TOWN COUNCIL, TUESDAY, MARCH 16.- Present: Mr. Peter Jones, Mayor, presiding, Aldermen Philip Williams and David Roberts, Councillors John Jones, Bridge End, John James, Edward J. Jones, Isaac Morgan, Edward Hamer, Edward Humphreys, T. D. Harries, Mr. David Lloyd, acting clerk, Mr. Rees Jones, surveyor, and Mr. H. L. Evans, borough accountant. MR. SPITTLE'S CONTRACT. A letter was read by the Mayor from Mr. Spittle, in which he promised to see that the pipes were delivered according to contract. Mr. Spittle added, as regards the harbour dues I am not only disappointed at the rate, but I was given to under- stand that there were to be none at all. I should certainly be pleased if you would do something in the matter. The contract has been a big loss to me, and I never calculated on these charges. I do not think the Town Council will enforce them on me under the circumstances." The subject was referred to the Harbour Committee on the motion of Alderman Williams, seconded by Mr. Hamer. PLAS CRUG PUMP. The SURVEYOR stated that Ir. Mcllquham offered R,25 for the old boiler, pump, and materials in the house at the entrance to Plas Crug. The Council decided to refuse the offer. PLAS CRUG FARM. The suhject of reletting Plas Crug Farm was referred to the Public Works Committee. THE PLYNLIMO.N WATER SCHEME. The MAYOR said a lease had been received from the Com- missioners of Woods and Forests to the Corporation, giving them permission to lay down and maintain water pipes, and to take water from Llyn Llygad Rheidol. His Worship added that the lease was quite in harmony with the terms of Mr. Howard's letter. It was agreed to ratify the lease on the motion of Alderman WILLIAMS, seconded by Alderman ROBERTS. Mr. DAVID LLOYD read a letter from the Public Works Loan Commissioners, stating that they would, subject to the Board's solicitor being satisfied that the grant would be in accordance with the Act, grant a loan for water work purposes to be repaid in 60 equal instalments at 31 per cent per annum interest. It having been stated that before the solicitor to the Commis- sioners would be satisfied, the agreements with the landowners must be completed, Mr. JOHN JAMES proposed, Mr. JOHN .TONES seconded, and it was agreed to instruct the Clerk to write a letter to Mr. Atwood saying that unless the agreements with owners of land were completed oeiore mat (tay iorsmgnt, the Council would instruct the Town Clerk to attend to the matter and also perform all other professional work connected with the Council. SINKING FUND. On the proposition of Mr. ISAAC MORGAN, seconded by Mr JOHN JAMES, it was agreed to direct that the sum of £ 324 6S being the third annual instalment of one-eightieth part of £ 25,U44 due on mortgage from the Urban Sanitary Authority, should be invested according to Section 84 of the Commis- sioners' Clauses Act, 1874," in pursuance of the directions con- tained in Section 97 of the Aberystwyth Improvement and Water Act, 1872. PAYMENT OF RATES. Mr. J. W. SZLUMPER attended the meeting and said that on the previous day the Collector had called upon him for the general district rates. An illegal demand note had been left at the house, but notwithstanding that he offered to pay the rates provided the Collector gave him separate receipts for the money -five receipts altogether-one for each assessment. The Collector refused to give the receipts, and made use of unbecom- ing language. The COLLECTOR having expressed regret for the use of the words complained of by Mr. Szlumper, he was informed by the Council that he must carry out the regulations of the Local Government Board.

ABERDOVEY. INQUEST.—A verdict of "Found dead" was the result of the inquest held on Thursday, March 11th, before Mr. G. J. Williams, coroner, anent the death of Daniel Thomas, the finding of whose body among the sandhills was reported in our last. ARRIVAL OF THE CETEWAYO.—A new fishing boat bear- ing the name of the Zulu king has arrived here. From the energeUc character of its owners, Messrs. E. and J. Bell, we may expect that its presence here will afford another inducement to visitors to patronize Aberdovey in the fact of a greater abundance of fish being landed in the place. Our correspondent addsThe arrival in the middle of a general election of a fishing boat bearing the name of the redoubtable King of Zululand has led to the remark being made that this Cetewayo is about to do for Aberdovey the reverse of what Beaconsfield has done for the nation the former will bring additijnal "grist to the mill," whilst the latter wastes the resources of the country and empties its mills." TOWYN LOCAL BOARD, THURSDAY, MARCH llTH.- Present: Mr. James Webster, chairman; Messrs. W, Parry, R. G. Price, John Daniel, John Williams, Griffith Jones, Wm. Lloyd, Thomas Jones, W. W. Jones; P. H. Hughes, surveyor; J. Ff. Jones, medical officer, and Owen Williams, inspector of nuisances. Surve.1Jor's RepQ1.t.-Mr. P. H. Hughes, the surveyor, reported that Mr. Roberts of Morfa Farm had requested him to call attention to the necessity of repairing the road between the Railway Level Crossing and Sandilands. A part of the same highway between the Station-road and Sandilands was getting out of repair in some parts. The railway bridges on the highways leading to the shore near Neptune Hall and on to Penrhyn were getting out of re- pair, and he had called the attention of the railway officials to the matter. Mr. W. R. M. Wynne complained that the rock near the,Calvii)istic Methodist Chapel at Bryncrug was getting rough. The complaint was receiv- ing attention. The Trustees of Bryncrug Chapel pressed for the erection of a gate with hand rails at the entrance to the chapel yard.—The Surveyor was directed to repair the Morfa highway, and also to get the work done at Bryncrug Chapel as cheaply as possible. Re-appointments.—Mr. J. Ff. Jones, the medical officer, and Mr. Owen Williams were re-appointed. Retiring Members.-It was stated by the Clerk that the retiring members of the Board were Messrs. W. Parry, J. Daniel, Wm. Lloyd, and Thos. Jones.- The Chairman remarked that sometimes the Board had nominated can- didates, but it was better to leave the matter to the different wards in the district.—Mr. R. G. Price suggested that the nominations should be left to a vestry meeting.— The Chairman did not see the use of leaving the subject to the vestry, because in former times what the vestry had decided had been undone afterwards.by individuals.

TIPYN 0 BOB PETH. The death is announced of the borough treasurer of Ruthin, Mr. John Jones, Pyrocantha House. Viscountess Combermere has arrived in Belgrave Square from St. Leonards on Sea, where she has been amending the winter. A series of public Bible readings are being given by the Dean of Llandaff (Dr. Vaughan) during the present month. Mr. E. S. Roberts, formerly accountant at the North and South Wales Bank, Rhyl, has been appointed manager of the Bala branch. The opposition to Dr. Easterby, Head-master of St. Asaph Grammar School, presumably upon political grounds, is said to have subsided. The school will shortly be transferred to the new buildings. It is announced that Mr. John Scott Bankes of Soughton Hall, Chairman of Flintshire Quarter Sessions, will be married in June next to Miss Amyott Burney, only daughter of the Rev. E. Burney of Bay House, Alver- stoke, Dear Gosport. At Chester Castle on Saturday, March 13, Annie Marie Hughes, a domestic servant, pleaded guilty to obtaining a situation by means of a false character, and Annie Mathe- son with writing the document in question.—They were each fined 210, and costs, or two months' hard labour. At the last meeting of the Chester Town Council the pictures bequeathed to the Corporation by the late Mr. Melling, formerly of Quay House, Neston, and afterwards of Bangor, having been hung in the Town Hall, in accord- ance with the testator's wish, were formerly accepted. The Duke of Westminster has (says the Sportsman) sus- tained a great loss in the death of the yearling colt by Scottish Chief out of Masquerade, purchased for 1,100 guineas on the Duke's behalf at the break up of the Cob- ham Stud, the highest priced foal ever sold. An impudent theft has been committed in Chester. A saddle and bridle were stolen from a horse which was harnessed to the Post-office bar, as it was waiting the other night for the Liverpool mails which arrive at 10<55, and the mail bags had to be taken to the General Post- office in a cab. The Chester Town Council has retaliated upon the local newspapers for urging that body to exercise greater economy with the administration of city finances, by cut- ting down the advertisement expenditure. The Chester Chronicle points out that although this may be a sharp retort, it is very short sighted policy. A private soldier was standing on the railway at Crewe station on Wednesday, March 10, with his back to an ap- proaching train not eighty yards distant, when his perilous position was observed by another man who shouted to him, but without effect, and who then ran to him, and pulled him away just in time to prevent his being knocked down by the train. The will of Mr. Peter Beck, late of Shrewsbury, banker, who died on December 28 last, has been proved by Peter Arthur Beck and John Downward, the nephews, the ex- ecutors, the personal estate being sworn under 950,000. The testator leaves to his executors B50 each to Edward Burd, M.D., 19 guineas; and the residue of his real and personal estate upon trust for his nephews and nieces, and the widow and children of a deceased nephew, in various proportions. The will of Mr. Thomas Jones, late of Aberystwyth, in the county of Cardigan, merchant, has been proved by Miss Anne Elizabeth Jones, the eldest daughter, and Edward John Jones, the son, the executors, the personal estate being sworn under 280,000. The testator makes special devises and bequests to his said son and each of his daughters, also to the children of his two deceased sons, and the widow of one of them. The residue of his property is to be divided between his son and six daughters. Major Hector Tulloch, R.E., Government Commis- sioner, held an inquiry at Pensarn, on Tuesday, March 9, in reference to granting a provisional order empowering the Local Board of Abergele and Pensarn to improve cer- tain streets and foot-paths in the district. Mr. Evan Morris, contended on behalf of several landowners that the improvement would cost Dot £2,000 but £20,000, because the whole of the lands and houses would have to be bought, and that the ratepayers strongly objected to further taxation. The marriage of Sir Chandos Stanhope Hoskyns Reade, seventh baronet, of Shipton Court, Oxfordshire, with Miss Maria Emma Elizabeth Conway Griffith, only child and heiress of the late Mr. Trygarn Griffith, of Carrsglwyd, Anglesey, was solemnised on Thursday, March 11, at St. George's, Hanover-square. Sir Chandos Reade's name has been recently brought before the public in connection with a curious will case, the late baronet having bequeathed his entire estates, real and personal, to his butler. This singular will is being contested. The bride is, in her own right, proprietress of extensive estates in Anglesey, Flintshire, Denbighshire, and Carnarvon- shire, and claims descent from the ancient Kings of Wales. The Duke of Westminster, Lord Howe, and other gen- tlemen interested in the abolition of the Dee Bridge tolls, have (says the Chester Chronicle) been thwarted in their endeavour to remove these arbitrary imposts by the action of the Chester Tramways Company. Our contemporary complains that farmers are driven to the Wrexham markets, building operations are checked in one of the pleasantest suburbs of the city, and a costly tax is placed on the residents on the Flintshire side of the river who drive to Cheater on business or pleasure. It is proposed that the Corporation should buy up the right to the tolls, remit them so far as the public are concerned, and retain them on the tramways. An alleged case of kleptomania was- brought under the notice of the Nantwich magistrates on Thursday, March 11, when Mrs. Walley, of Wrexham Bridge, Burland, a widow, who rasides in her own cottage, and is possessed of considerable property, was charged with having stolen several plates and books from the house of Mr. T. Gaman, of Dysart-buildings, Nantwich. A sale of property was going on at the hoase, and prisoner's conduct exciting suspicion Mr. Gaman watched her movements, and saw her put several things into her basket. Captain Lingard, superintendent of police, who happened to be present, arrested her, and found her basket full of things which Mr. Gaman identified. The prisoner, it is stated, is some- what eccentric in her habits, but she is a woman who is well known, and who occupies a very respectable position. She was remanded. On Friday, March 12, at the Chester Police Court, Samuel Hall, of L nveryard, Crook-street, was charged on remand with wounding his wife with intent to disfigure her. The evidence was to the effect that the prisoner and his wife were drunk on the night of the 28th ult., and that they quarrelled she struck him on the head with a frying- pan, and he bit off part of her nose. The woman now de- clared that there was no quarrel, and that the act was committed by the prisoner while he was in a fit. There was evidence to show that the prisoner had a fit previous to the occurrence on the night in question. The medical evidence was that in a fit the teeth would be clenched to- gether.—The prisoner was committed for trial at the assizes. Two "giants" were buried at Festimog on St. David's Day. The first was Richard Evans, Barlwyd-terrace, who was the tallest man in the neighbourhood-his height being 6ft. 6in. It is said that he was exceedingly strong. Mr. Giddis, a Scotchman by birth, was the next. The deceased weighed 320lbs., and was strongly built. The coffin was so large that it was found necessary to remove the frame of the doorway before it could be removed out of the house. No hearse could be found sufficiently large to carry the remains. A powder-van was procured to convey the deceased from the quarry, and the coffin was afterwards lowered down the incline to Duffws station, whence it was removed by the goods waggon to St. David's Church. Twelve men had to carry the body to the grave A very eccentric lady recently died in Dublin, leaving behind her nearly 240,000 in funded property, and many houses. She had a weakness for jewellery, and would walk out with a thousand pounds' worth displayed on a dress of very humble materials. Some years ago she bè- came acquainted with a gentleman named Lalor, profess- ing to be a captain in the Confederate Army, made him the manager of her property, loaded him with benefits, and even sent him to Hamburg for the benefit of his iiealth, whence he wrote her at least one letter which showed he had no very high opinion of her understanding. But when the lady died, it was found that, with the ex- ception of about £ 2,500 in bequests, she had left him all her property. The next of kin, an old woman in poor circumstances, residing in Wales, disputed the will; but the.jury decided in its favour, strongly recommending Lalor, however, to deal liberally with the next of kin. In one of a series of sketches by Mr. Alfred Kimmer, oi Our Old Country Towns," and appearing in Belgravia, he says that the name "Belgrave" is derived from an ancient hamlet two miles from Eaton Hall, the seat of the Duke of Westminster. In describing Cheshire scenery Mr. Rimmell says-" Within a few miles of where these lines are written are the Cheshire hills, neglected indeed by artists and tourists, but almost unsurpassed in beauty. From one of these hills at Broxton no fewer than ten counties can be seen, and the landscapes on every side are as pleasing as they are broad and rich. The estuary of the Mersey is plainly visible in the north, and to the west are the bends of the Dee, showing themselves at intervals in thin streaks through the dense foliage, like loops of silver thread on thick pile velvet. Chester is easily seen, as also Nantwich and Malpas and Whitchurch, and many church towers that have stood the wear and tear of centuries. There are parks and black and white farm houses scattered over the vast landscape; and in one direction, where a long stretch of road is visible, a coach (for there are a few stage coaches left) looks only like a speck, and hardly seems to make any progress at all. Again and again the ploins we overlook have figured in the civil wars, and we are reminded of monarchs who 'waded through slaughter to a throne,' while at the same time the woods of Gresford and the tower of Wem are plainly visible-the one gave birth, and the other a title, to the judge who shut the Gates of mercy on mankind."

RECKITT'S PARIS BLUE.—The marked superiority of this Laundry Blue over all others, and the quick appre- ciation of its merits by the public, has been attended with the usual result, viz. a good of imitations the merit of the latter mainly consists in the ingenuity exerted, not simply in imitating the square shape, but making the general appearance of the wrappers resemble that of the genuine article. FROM THE PAPERS. r r. Cardinal Manning, according to the Aurora, will visit Rome soon after Easter, having first conducted a pious caravan (una pia caravana) of English Catholics to Lourdes. A convoy of supplies, which was proceeding through the Naga Hills to Konoma and Paplongmais, was atacked on the 10th March by a body of Konoinas, three of the escort being killed, and one wounded. The article on Cow-keeping by farm labourers" by Mr. H. Evershed, has been reprinted from the Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society. We shall very likely have something to say about it at a future period. An explosion occurred on Wednesday night, March 10, in Bedwellty Pits, Tredegar, by which four men wn-e killed and several others were injured, i! ortunately there were only a few men in the pit at the time of the accident. A manager of some works at Birminghatn, named Browne, has recovered £3,590 from the London and North- Western Railway Company for permanent injuries sus- tained to his arm in a collision at Bloomfield Junction in May of last year. It is proposed to hold at the Walker Art Gallery, Liver- pool, a Loan Exhibition of Prehistoric Antiquities and Ethnography, for the purpose of illustrating the natural history of primitive and uncivilized man, and the various developments of culture peculiar to the different races of mankind. The division in the House of Commons on Mr. Otway's resolution in favour of the abolition of flogging in the army was of a strictly party character. The majority of 76 against the resolution consisted exclusively of Conser- vatives, and the minority of 36 in its favour of Liberals and Home Rulers. The silver medal of the Cobden Club, offered to the most successful student in political economy in the Uni- versity of Madras, has been won by P. Thanu Pillai, a native student, who passed the M.A. degree, and obtained thefchighest number of marks in political economy in the February examination. .Uff'the London Gazette of next Friday will appear the official announcement of the establishmeut of Liverpool into an episcopal see independent of that of Chester, and shortly thereafter the appointment of the first chief pastor of the new diocese may be expected. A Reuter's telegram from Shanghai, dated Friday, March 12, says it is reported that Chunghow, the Chinese special ambassador who recently returned from St. Petersburg after negotiating the Kuldja treaty, has been beheaded, and that a revolt has broken out in Pekin. Mr. Parnell had on Thursday, March 11, a final con- ference with his followers at New York, about establish- ing a Land League in the United States. He boasts of having collected 200,000 dols., one-eigth of which is for political purposes. The Standard's correspondent at New York says, however, his mission has been a signal failure. With regard to the case of Hartmann it is said to be pos- sible that his release may lead to more serious conse- quences than were at first imagined. The Nord, the Russian organ in Brussels, devotes several columns to the subject. The Russian refugees in Paris have drawn up an address of thanks to France for having released their fel- low countryman. An exciting chase, by four river policemen, after a pilot who was espied in the act of smoking a pipe on board a brig loaded with 25 tons of gunpowder, took place on the Mersey a few days ago. The pilot, it is stated, gave zest to the contest by unfurling his sails in order to escape; but the policemen won the race, and the delinquent was fined 25 and costs for this indulgence in a forbidden pleasure. It is stated in Berlin that Prince William, the eldest son of the Crown Prince, will shortly be betrothed to the Princess Caroline Mathilda of Schleswig-Holstein, who was born on the 25th January, 1860, and is the second daughter of the late Duke Frederich of Schleswig-Holstein. The Crown Princess is said to be greatly in favour of this union. The Himalaya troopship arrived at Spithead on Satur- day, March 13, with invalids, about 200 in number, from the Cape. The men are mostly those who were wounded atUlundi, the serious character of their injuries having prevented them leaving at' an earlier date for England. They will go on to the Netley Royal Hospital. Shocking reports continue to be received of the distress in Asiatic Turkish districts. Captain Clayton, the British Vice-Consul in Van, telegraphs to Sir Henry Layard that the population of that district are reduced to such a state of destitution that they search in the mountains for roots and mix them with linseed to make a substitute for bread. Even this food they have only once a day, and in searching for it in the hills many of them are frozen to death. General Melikoff has obtained a more direct control over the St. Petersburgh police by taking into his own hands the management of what is known as the Third Section," the post having been resigned by General Drenteln. It is reported from St. Petersburg that a num- ber of political prisoners, who had been for some time in confinement on suspicion, have been released. As he intends to take part as a candidate in the pending general election, Sir Richard Temple has not awaited the arrival of his successor in the governorship of Bombay, but embarked on Saturday, March 13, for England. Pending the arrival at Bombay of Sir James Fergusson, the newly-appointed Governor, the duties of the post will be discharged by Mr. L. R. Ashburner, a member of the Council. The will of Mr. Alfred Gilbey, late of the Pantheon, Oxford-street, and of Wooburn House, Wooburn, Bucks. wine merchant, who died]on November 28, was proved on the 23rd of February, the personal estate being sworn un- der 2350,000. The testator devises and bequeaths all his real and personal estate to his wife absolutely, and appoints her guardian of his infant children during their respective minorities. A sad accident happened on Friday, March 12, to Mrs. Prothero, wife of the Rev. E. Prothero, rector of Tur- weston, while out with the Duke of Grafton's hounds. Her horse fell at an awkward leap, carrying her with him. The horse of a lady who was following her also swerved, and dwhed its fore feet on the breast of Mrs. Prothero, who was taken up quite insensible. No hopes are entertained of her recovery. From Capetown we have news^via Madeira to the 24th of February. The Natal Legislative Council has been prorogued until the 20th May. The Lieutenant-Governor of Natal has declined to recommend the Home Govern- ment to assent to' a Bill providing for the responsible government of the colony. At the closing meeting of the Congregational Union, on Thursday, March 11, a resolution was carried unani- mously condemning the foreign policy of the Government, and affirming that it was the clear duty of every true patriot to secure the return of a Parliament opposed to unjust wars and aggressions abroad, and pledged to fur- ther the religious and political equality, the sobriety and moral development, of the people. On Thursday, March 11, Dr. Caleb Whiteford, surgeon, was brought up at the Bow-street Police-court on a charge of forging a letter purporting to be written by the Hon. Mr. Liddell, Under Secretary of State, with the view of stopping the execution of Charles Shurety at Newgate. Evidence was given in support of the prosecution, and the prisoner, who said his defence would quite exonerate him, was remanded on bail. Charles Lister, who had gone by another name, was charged at the Mansion-House Justice-room with forging and uttering a cheque which had been altered by chemicals from £4 9s. 8d. to £500. with intent to defraud the Bank of England. He was remanded. It may be noted in connection with this case that at the meeting of the Bank Droprietors last week the Governor announced that they were preparing a new cheque which he believed would be proof against forgery. The generally dull little town of Darmstadt is expected to be unusually animated during the visit of her Majesty. It is stated that during the period of the Queen's stay the Emperor and Empress of Russia will take up their residence at Jugenheim for some weeks. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are also expected, while the Emperor of Germany will be at Wiesbaden, within easy distance of Darmstadt. The steamer Montana, which left New York for Liver- pool on the 2nd March, struck on the rocks in Church Bay, a few miles to the east of Holyhead, shortly after three o'clock on Saturday morning, March 13. The captain and second officer were on the bridge at the time, and so thick was the weather that they had passed be- tween the Holyhead and the Skerries lights without ob- serving either of them. There was no panic on board, and the passengers and crew were got off safely, and brought to Liverpool late at night by the tug Sea, King. The organ of the German Clerical party, the Germania, says it learns that the Pope has expressed to the Arch- bishop of Cologne his approval of the declarations relative to Socialism, with which the latter accompanied the pro- mulgation of the recent Papal Encyclical. The Pope, in conclusion, expressed his fervent hope that he would soon see peace restored in ecclesiastical affairs in the German fatherland, and declared that, on the part of the Holy See, nothing bas been left undone to restore the concord between Church and State in Germany. Application was made to the Dean of Arches on Satur- day, March 13, for an inhibition against the Rev. T. Pelham Dale, rector of St. Vedast, Cheapside, London, for ritualistic practices. Mr. Dale had previously been admonished and served with a citation to abstain from such ceremonies. The inhibition was ordered to issue, and if not released within three years by obedience in writing the living will become void. Lord Pen zance also ordered a citation to be served on the vicar of Prestbury, near Cheltenham, who had disobeyed a monition issued under the public worship act. The case is analogous to that of Martin v. Mackonochie, the object of the new suit being to obtain sentence of deprivation. The Tithe Commissioners' report for 1879, issued on Saturday, March 13, shows that the tithes have been com- muted by agreements or awards in 12,230 parishes and other districts. In 416 of these districts the rent-charges have been merged in the lands or redeemed, instead of being apportioned. The rent-charges thus redeemed amounted to £656 15s. 41d., and the purchase money to 217,640 5a. 21d., but the amount merged cannot be stated. Where the rent-charge has neither been merged nor re- deemed, it has been apportioned amongst the lands chargeable, and the Commissioners have confirmed 11,784 such apportionments. On Wednesday, March 10, Captain Webb accomplished the feat he had undertaken of remaining in the water for sixty continuous hours. During the day upwards of 9,000 persons had passed the turnstiles, and the enthusiasm at the finish was extraordinary. The tank is exactly forty feet long by twenty broad. The artificial sea water was six feet in depth, and has been kept at a temperature of from 75 degrees to 80 degrees all the time. Captin Webb did not appear in the least degree fatigued, and walked to his dressing-room without assistance. It is worthy of notice that he took no stimulants during the time- nothing stronger than tea or coffee—while his food con- sisted chiefly of minced beef and chopped eggs. A surgeon who examined the captain immediately after he had left the tank pronounced him to be in pertect health. This is the greatest swimming feat on record. Having taken nearly three months to consider the matter, the Dundee Free Presbytery (says the Liverpool Daity Post) has come to the conclusion that the hand of Heaven is visible in the Tay Bridge disaster, and that in order to prevent a recurrence of these visitations, steps should be taken to devise means for removing temptations to Sunday traffic and travelling. One speaker thought that the event had a double significance, and that it was not only intended as an exhibition of displeasure at Sunday travelling, but also at mercantile trickery in building a bad bridge." It would be interesting to know the opinion of the Presbytery as to whether the structure might have been expected to give way if the same gale had been' blowing on a Saturday instead of a Sunday. Bad bridges come to grief under ordinary circumstances without any supernatural interference, but there is not much harm in the notion that the catastrophe was a providential visita- tion for the use of defective iron. The only^ objection to the theory is that it bad iron was employed, it was a little hard upon the passengers that they should have been sent to the bottom of the Tay for the default, instead of those who were responsible for it.

From Mrs. Presland (of Walford Hall, Salop)- at Peniarth, Merionethshire, to her sister Miss Slaney, at Shrewsbury i. Oh; Breave Wales, no less than sixteen yesterday set out for the Seaport of Ballmouth, about 12 mile from here up the Mountains we whent, and varitity of pleasing prospects, a good mile before we cross the Arm of the Sea, we assended a precepice, frightful beyand descrip- tion, on one side us was the highest ragget Rock I have seen, they stones to appearance lose, and look as if just droping on your heads, some of which have fell a few years ago, the Precepice down to the- mean Ocean not less than thirty yards, and us travelers not a yard from the side of it, where the waves dash, and tide rores till it made me tremble, but sweet Balmouth appeared across the arm of the sea with many ships lying at Anehor. the Town is small, most of the Houses Built on the side of a very high Rock, one above another for half a mile up, over the tops of all the house still rises higher, and higher, more rocks, at the top of which I got up upon my legs, but when I got there, 1 cannot tell you how I was pleasd at the wonderfull views, and how tere- fied at the precipice below that I was to get down, which I did on my hands and knees, for I roud stand no longer, and much Bleamd for going so high, but what will not a womans curiosity do. when I came down I discoverd on one side across the river, some fine green medows, on the side of a long high Rock, coverd with hanging wood down which run severall small pistles of water, which we had the missfortune to see in great perfection, for just as we got in to the boat to cross the Arm of the Sea, it set a thundring, raining, and lightning to a great degree, which gave me an opertunity of seeing fire works in the greatest perfection, for the Beauty of the lightning Darting on the waves is beyand discription. before I got in to the Boftt we drank tea and from the part of the room where I sat, I see nothing but the mean ocean, not a house tree or land. '1 LORD HILL'S SWORD.—There is not much dignity attaching to the title of Knight, when it is con- ferred on a man who happens by chance to be the mayor of a borough when some auspicious event happens and at times the reflected title of My lady" adopted by the good "dame," his wife, is excessively amusing to her circle of acquaintances. There was one Shropshire man on whom the honour was conferred, who could boast that in conferring it an additional honour was imparted The Knight in question was Sir John Bickerton Williams, Mayor of Shrewsbury in 1837, and the circumstance I allude to was a topic for some of the after-dinner speeches at a banquet the Mayor gave at the end of Oct., 1837. In proposing the health of Lord Hill, Sir John said, "You all know that, unworthy as I am, I received a while ago a mark of the Royal favour. 1 am proud to say it was arranged with, and consented to by, our late most excellent Majesty, without my knowledge. The melancholy event which bereaved the nation of its father deprived me of so receiving.the honour. When I knelt before our most- gracious Queen, the Court was in mourning for the calamity to which I have alluded. Sombre as were my reflections, I must state that joy relieved the gloom when I saw the noble lord who now graces this entertainment with his presence, draw his sword, and hand it to her Majesty. Nor, gentlemen, was that all; my joy approached as near perfection as possible when that very hand which wielded that sword as it glittered on the plains of Waterloo carried it across my shoulder." Lord Hill, in giving the health of the Mayor, said, "I own myself to be exceedingly gratified with anything which can add to the dignity of my native place and feel that the compliment paid byJHer Majesty to Sir John Bickerton Williams was an honour conferred, not only on his learning and talents, but on the town of which be is the chief magistrate. I recollect well the cir- cumstance which the Mayor has alluded to respecting my sword having been used by the Queen in conferring the honour he received, and few events in my life have afforded me more pleasure than in having assisted in that ceremony." Pimblemei-e.-Can any of your readers inform me when and how Bala lake-Llyn Tegid—acquired the name of Pimbleinere It has occurred to me, and I otter the suggestion with great diffidence, that the name has been derived in the following manner:—It is known to nearly all your readers that the parishes which adjoin the lake are called the five parishes of Penllyn. At some remote period, the lake must have been called The Lake of the Five Parishes," or Llyn y Pump plwy, just as the lake of Lucerne is called the lake of the four forest Cantons (Vierwaldstattersee). Llyn y pump plwy, which became corrupted into Llyn y pum'blwy, and this_ Anglicized would give Pimblemere. I should be glad if any light can be thrown upon the subject. TEGID. [The definition is an old one see Cambrian Travellers' Guide, &c.—Eu.] A CAERNARVONSHIRE MARTYR.-The following curious relation is given in Williams' History of Aberconwy. Like many others which have survived only through the medium of oral tradition, circumstances de- rived from imagination and prejudice appear to have got mixed up with the facts. The hole in which arms for a hundred men were said to have been concealed, and the notion of a wholesale massacre of the Protestant in- habitants of Creiddyn may have been derived from some confused memories of an episode in the Civil War of Charles I. In the fact of a Catholic priest and Chaplain to a private Catholic family being hunted down, and hanged (?), drawn, and quartered for his faith, the mere profession of which was made high treason by statute law in the reign of Elizabeth, and so continued for three canturies afterwards, there is nothing so uncommon as to need any such ad. ventitious particulars to add to its credibility At a short distance from the house (Penrhyn Creiddyn, the seat of the extinct, but ancient family of Pugh, descended from Ednyfed Vychan) is the family chapel, now de- secrated into a stable it is about 25 feet long, by 15 wide; the altar table of stone is recollected by several now living; by a grant of Pope Nicholas three-fourths of the tithe of Penrhyn were attached to this chapel, and the same is now vested in the estate. The family for a long period after the Reformation pro- fessed the Roman Catholic religion, and they kept a priest, who officiated in this chapel for themselves, and a few Catholic neighbours in connexion with this circumstance is the follow- ing anecdote, which is current in the neighbourhood. It is said that a plot was formed here to put to death all the Protestants in Creiddyn, and for the accomplishment of this deed a Doay ot men was so arrive at a certain time of the night previously to their coming great preparations were made in preparing provisions, and a servant of Gloddaith, who paid his addresses to a woman in the service of the family, finding her engaged at an unseasonable hour, obtained by his urgent enquiries a knowledge of the con- spiracy he immediately hastened home, and disclosed what he had heard to his master, who with the greatest despatch procured a troop of horse, and invested Penrhyn. This speedy intervention frustrated their designs, and some of the Inmates escaped, while others were taken but the priest, who was supposed to be the contriver of the plot; for some time eluded the strict search made for him: it happened however that some persons, being in a boat out at sea, observed smoke ascending from Rhiwleden rock, which circumstance exciting their curi- osity, they hastened there, and, in a small cave called Ty yn y graig, (the house in the rock), which is about 90 feet from the summit, and the approach to which is extremely difficult, the priest was discovered he was drawn and quartered in a field below the house, and his name. Sir William Guy, is even pre- served there was a hole behind the house called Twll arfau cant o wyr, where it was supposed that the arms were concealed; and, after the departure of the Pughs to&Coytmor, among other things left behind, was an old trunk, which the tenants and some of their neighbours opened, and found therein a withered hand, which is supposed to have been one of the members of this same priest. The statement is doubtful that Sir William Guy was "drawn and quartered" only, instead of being, as the sentence for high treason required, as the law stood until repealed by 54 Geo. III. c. 146, hanged, but taken down alive, and then have his bowels taken out (which is what is meant by drawn) and burnt before his face." It would seem to convey the idea that the whole proceeding was the result of mob violence, and not of regular legal process. If the latter, are there any legal records extant to prove it ? The first Act of the first year of Elizabeth (1 Eliz. cap. 1), prescribed this penalty for the third offence for any one who should, by writing, printing, teaching, preaching, express words, deed, or act, affirm or defend the authority or jurisdiction, spiritual or ecclesiastical, of any foreign prelate heretofore claimed or used within the realm," which, with the next Act (1 Eliz. cap. 2), prohibiting every where the sacrifice of the mass under pain of forfeiture of goods and perpetual imprison- ment, was tantamount to doing away by force with the Catholic religion in Englahd. H.W.L. t The Hole of the Arms of 100 men. REPLIES. WILLIAM ROOSE (Feb. 18, 1880).-He was born at Bodgadfa, near Amlwch, in 180S, and died at the latter place somewhat suddenly on the 4th Jujy,_ 1^78. His ancestors settled in that part of the principality some time in the early part of the -last century. As regards his works, he painted some few first class original pic. tures (although his forte was more in the portrait and landscape line than in historical paintings), notably amongst them being "The death of Llewelyn," which gained a first prize at an eisteddfod at Carmarthen also a portrait of a young lady named Miss Harris, which gained several prizes at public exhibitions, in addition to numerous others. As an artist he excelled in oil, water- colour, or crayon; whilst as an engraver, I think I can safely aver that there were few (if any) in the prinsipality that would bear favourable comparison with him. In addition to the engravings which MORTIMEB enumerates, he*' published a splendid portrait of Talhaiarn," the noted Welsh Bard, very few copies of which are now in existence, and which displayed far more skill than any of his former productions in that branch. His other achievements in the art may be found in almost every part of the country and, 'altogether, he was undoubtedly (considering the disadvantages he laboured under in the earlier part of his career, which were very great) one of the cleverest men in his particular line thao the prm 'i- pality has ever produced, although he died in compara- tive obscurity. b J.H.R.

_FACTS AND FANCIES. A young lady had her lover's initials tattooed on her arm. The engagement was broken. Upon a modest gravestone in Vincennes cemetery ap- pears the plaintive legend: "His neighbour played the. cornet." A Connecticut man, whose son was ill, appealed to the physician, "Do bring him out of it at once, doctor; do break up the fever immediately, even if you charge as much as if he went through a whole course of fever." The editor of a Chicago newspaper wanting the details of a terrible inundation in Connecticut, telegraphed to a correspondent in Hartford—"Send full particulars of the flood." The reply came quickly-" You will find them in Genesis." A negro in Columbus dreamed that he found five dol- lars at a certain place in the street. He went to the spot next morning, found one dollar, and now accuses the ghost who told him to go there of stealing four dollars. A WORD IN SEASON.—A good pastor, a widower, pro- posed to a young lady a short time since, but was rejected. His feelings had the second severe test, when a widow neighbour sent him the following text to preach from:- "You ask and receive not, because you ask a-miss." IF You WOULD BE so OBLIGING.—"Weatherauthorities prophesy that the coming spring will be mild, and not characterised by the periodic gales we are at present ex- periencing." PULPIT ANECDOTES.—The story told by Dr. Storrs about a little clergyman whose bald head was just visible to the congregation when he got into the pulpit, preaching from the text, Thou shalt see greater things than these," is more than matched by the old story from Boston of the late Dr. Parkman when he preached his first sermon in the high old-fashioned tub-pulpit of Brattle-street Church. Very little of him was to be seen except the top of his head and arms. which he waved about as he read, "Lo, it is I; be not afraid."

Fortunate ri rance There was a time when, on this side of the Channel, similar agreeable statements could be published year after year, by an English Finance Minister to the English Parliament and people. When will such a.n happy time return ? Not, we suspect, this Easter. It is Lent, so perhaps this comparison between England and France, though mortifying, may not be unseasonable, nor, let us hope, unprofitable. The longest jour maigre must have an end.—Punch.

FROM LONDON LETTERS. The Bristol split threatens the seat of one of the few members in the House for whom all parties feel areverence. A Conservative member, who is no slack partisan, told me, only a day or two before the dissolution was announced, that if Mr. Morley presented himself to his constituency he should feel almost bound to throw up the contest. Mr. Fry is not only the selected candidate of the party, but the member who won the seat by a majority surprising even to himself. Half the Liberals, however, have an affection for him as a local man rejected by the narrow vote of a divided caucus, and, unless their affections are weakened by his attempt to disturb a safe Liberal seat, he will get just sufficient votes to send a Tory to Westminster. —Liverpool Mercury. Mr. Charley went to Parliament to smash Gladstone.* Mr. Charley has not exactly smashed anything. But he has become (an exceedingly) common sergeant, and he is about to be made a knight. Sir William Thomas Charley has been raised to the knighthood that his threatened seat at Salford may be made safer. Mr. Raikes has been made a Privy Councillor for the same reason-that the appa- rent approval of her Majesty may stand him in good stead. Lord Beaconsfield is the prince of electioneerers.- Liverpool Mercury. The announcement maije by Mr. Gladstone last night to the immense assemblage of electors which greeted him at Marylebone—namely, that Lord Derby had taken his stand under the Liberal banner—was received with an enthusiasm quite impossible to describe. As the veteran chief, with uplifted hand, led on the cheer which wel- comed the glad tidings, the surging mass seemed animated with his spirit, and responded with cheers again and again renewed. The effect was talismanic, and to-day its influence is manifested in the appearance of large placards on both sides of the river, apparently intended specially for the Metropolitan boroughs, calling on the "Liberals to unite and hurl the jobbers from power. "-Birmingham Post. The eternal Raikes" has received the dying bequest of the Beaconsfield Cabinet. He has been sworn a member of her Majesty's"Most Honourable" Privy Council. Again, her Majesty's unobtrusive name is associated by her "advisers" with this, the latest recognition of political services. Never has British Minister so unfairly need the name of the Sovereign for his own political ends and personal ambition as the Earl of Beaconsfield. To his other credits may be added that of resuscitating the bane- ful Court party," the scourge of monarchs. Down to the Common Serjeants of London is the Royal "pleasure brought by the chemico-scientific Premier. Why Mr. Charley should be knighted, not even his political friends can explain, and all are exclaiming, How did he come by it.Birmingham Post. It is rather a farcical conclusion tor an heroic Ministry like this that it should commit suicide in a water-butt! Yet such is the irony of fate, and the Government which has disturbed Europe, upset Asia, and annexed a large part of Africa, retires discomfited before a bill for the purchase of the London Waterworks. That such should be the end is not surprising in itself. Precisely the same weaknesses that have brought it to grief in the matter of the waterworks have been in operation in its dealings with foreign policy. But its foreign policy, being conducted in foreign languages, in foreign parts, and being built about by buttresses of sham patriotism, has marvellously prospered. Lord Beaconsfield might have gone on for years darkly fulminating against Russia, and feebly bolstering up Turkey, and those who venture to think that he is not so great or so true a man as the Times or the Daily Telegraph paint him, would have had their heads bitten off for unpatriotically presuming to criticise. But when his Administration comes to meddle with so common-place a thing as waterworks situated within the metropolitan boundary—a matter within everybody's knowledge-the whole imposture is detected, and the Ministry endeavour to escape amid the confusion consequent upon a dissolution of Parliament.—Birmingham postt In the small hours of this (Friday) morning Mr. Mundella met the reward of patience by getting that excellent measure of his through the House of Commons -I allude to the Municipal Corporations (Property Qualification Abolition) Bill. If the hon. gentleman had given ear to the crafty whispering of hon. friends opposite, he would have gone home quietly and dined, or proceeded to Sheffield, to learn in the morning that the order had been reached, and, there being no one to respond, the Bill had been sent to the bottom of the list, and been practically lost. But Mr. Mundella preferred playing a waiting game. So after lurking about the House for ten or eleven hours he had the satisfaction at two o'clock this morning of hearing the Bill called, and the majority of its opponents having gone to meet their doom in another place, the measure was read a third time; and its author hopes to get it through the House of Lords also before the dissoltitiou.-Liverpool Post. Mr. Lowe's address is a characteristic document. He contends that Conservatism is dead. The other day Lord Beaconsfield was overheard to meet an argument relative to the Liberal party by the remark, "But there is no Liberal party." Mr. Lowe meets this assertion by the counter declaration that theSConservative party have worn out their old principles, and that there is hardly a shred of them left. He declares the time has arrived when the country should revert to its old and honoured paths— throwing off the thraldom of the Jingoes-and return to its place among peaceful and industrial nations. He leaves untouched, he says, much that might be said on the use- less charges" which the Prime Minister hah brought against his opponents, and the cruel manner in which he has tortured what is, after all, his native language.-Liver- pool Post. The endeavour to induce Mr. Rathbone to stand for South-West Lancashire is arousing no little attention and sympathy. Club rumour has it that the lords of Knowsley and Croxteth have been quite roused by it, and are likely to show a sense of its importance in the good old approved fashion consecrated by the Molyneuxes, the Fitzwilliams, and other noble Liberals of other days. I hear also that Lord Granville remarked—though for this I cannot vouch. as my information is casual-that to contest South-West Lancashire was of immense importance because' it would fix Lord Derby, although Mr. Gladstone's announcement on Friday shows that Lord Derby's position is new sufficiently well defined. The noble lord is reported to have "fixed" himself, with great firmness, in favour of Mr- have "fixed" himself, with great firmness, in favour of Mr. Rathbone in the contingency of his standing, and is said to have evinced in doing so a very just sense of the fact that political chastisement is-especially due to Mr. Cross. Liverpool Post, March 13. Some mystification seems to prevail with regard to the authorship of Lord Hartington's address, an impression having got abroad that it was the outcome of the wisdom of the front Opposition bench that paragraphs to it. The Tory Press is making capital out of this misconception, to the detriment, o doubt, _ot a very powerful party manifesto. I am now a position to state on authority that the address was tn work entirely of Lord Hartington. His colleagues in the late Cabinet did not contribute to it a single paragr&ph. It is, however, true that at the conference of Whig leade held at Devonshire House on Wednesday the ,9 was read and approved of. It was wholly in his lordship handwriting, and would be described by a printer as a piece of very good copy. "-Liverpool Post.
