NOW READY History of the Gwydir Family It \\T ITH numerous valuable notes from the Brogyntyn, V' Wynnstay, and Peniarth MSS., added by W. W. E. WYNNE, Esq., of Peniarth, and never before-published. Printed in quarto, on thick hand-made paper, old-faced type. Illustrated with portraits of Sir John and Sir Richard Wynne, Views or Gwydir m 1604 and 1720; of Dolwyddeian Oastl« 1742, AND jLlanrwst Bridge in I 1781. A copy sent post free to any address in Great Britain or America on receipt of Twenty-one Shillings, by WOODALL and VENABLES, Publishers, Oswestry. From The Globe March 29, 1879. Messrs. Woodall and Venables, of Oswestry, have issued a magnificent edition of the History of the Gwydir Family-a record that throws much light on the state of society in North Wales in the 15th and the earlier part of the 16th centuries. From The Academy, Apr. 6. Sir John Wynne's History of the Gwydir Family stands alone as being the only family history which has reached a fourth edition. The book contains many quaint and interesting anecdotes, which are not to be found elsewhere, and which throw a vivid light on Welsh manners and customs of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. From the Daily News, Jan. 22. The thanks of antiquaries and historical students are due to Mr Askew Roberts, of Oswestry, for his handsome reprint, with many valuable additions (Oswestry: Woodall and Venables), of the old memoir of the Gwydir Family, written by Sir John Wynne in the time of James II., and first published in 1770 This narrative comprises the only known account of the state of society in North Wales in the fifteenth and the earlier part of the sixteenth centuries and its little incidental sketches of the wild, lawless condition of the country, and of the feuds of the different families who in certain districts were always contending for mastery, are curiously significant. The volume is accompanied by pedigrees, and by several interesting old portraits and views reproduco4 in facsimile. From the Chester Chronicle, Feb. 1. The enterprising proprietors of the Oswestry Advertizer have just published, in a handsomely-bound volume, a History of the Gwydir Family The editor—the author of the popular 'Gossiping Guide to Wales,'—acknowledges with gratitude that this edition of the Gwydir history, -the fourth, the first having been published as early as J770 owes its existence to the labours of W. W. E. Wynne, Esq of Peniarth, who placed his 'copy' at the disposal of Mr. Askew Roberts, who in turn was assisted by the Rev. Canon Williams of Rhydycroesau. From The Welshman, March 14. The editor of this beautiful edition, gives the chief credit of the undertaking to Mr. W. W. E. Wynne, of Peniarth, who has collated his copy with the Brogyntyn, Wynnstay, and Peniarth MSS., adding a very large collection of dates from contemporary records, including the Ministers' Accounts in the Public RecordlOffice, in London." From the Shrewsbury Chronicle Mar. 21. The art of Photo-lithography has been liberally employed in reproducing exact fac similes of rare old prints. The work is beautifully printed in old-faced type. From the Wrexham Advertiser, Feb. 22. Mr Askew Roberts has completed the laborious task he took in hand, and the result is a handsome quarto volume, re- flecting great credit on the publishers, Messrs. Woodall and Venables, Oswestry. From the North Wales Chronicle Mar. 22. The work is printed in 4to., on very thick hand-made paper, and the typographical get-up is excellent. It is copiously illustrated, and dedicated to the Right Hon. the Baroness Willoughby de Eresby, the representative of the old Gwydir stock and the owner of the estate. From the North Walex Guardian, Mar. 22. The work is indeed an admirable production. The antiqua- rian will find in it much to admire, the student of Welsh history plenty of valuable information of the date of which it treats, and the reading public much to interest and to wonder at. From the Chester Courant, March 26. The work is admirably illustrated, and will undoubtedly form one of the most valuable contributions which have been made of late to the literature of the Principality. Page 13 says :—" Two pairs of boots lined with fur were also taken; and for physic-with which it is as well to be supplied when travelling in out-of-the-way places—some quinine and Cockle's pills, the latter a most invaluable medicine, and one which I have used on the natives of Central Africa with the greatest possible success, In fact, the marvellous effects produced upon the mind and body of an Arab Sheik, who was impervious to all native medicines, when I administered to him five COCKLE'S PILLS will never fade from my memory; and a friend of mine, who passed through the same district many months after- wards, informed me that my fame as a medicine man' had not died out, but that the marvellous cure was even then a theme of conversation ill TTUE zaar." SEE BURNABY'S RIDE TO KHIVA, page 13. A GOOD FAMILY MEDICINE CHEST, with a prudent use, has saved many a life; and yet we think the idea may be improved upon, and reduced to a more simple form. Take some good compound, such as COCKLE'S ANTIBILIOUS PILLS and we find that the desired end may be obtained with. out scales and weights, or little mysterious compartments or enchanted bottles, with crystal stoppers. Others might be used, but COCKLE'S PILLS, as tested by many thousands of persons, and found to answer their purpose so well, may be set down as the best. -Observer.
