--------MACHYNLLETH.
MACHYNLLETH. ODDFELLOWS' ANNIVERSARY. The tenth anniversary of the Loyal Llvnoedd Lodge of Oddfellows was celebrated on Tuesday, July 16th. The members assembled at the lodge-room in the Town Hall, about ten o'clock in the morning, when Ir. T. H. fvaiis, Ir. J. Rowlands, solicitor, and Mr. R. Dean were ad- mitted honorary members, and half-a-dozen ordinary members were also initiated. The total strength of the lodge is now about 126 ordinary, and eight honorary mem- bers. This shows a remarkable growth during the past two years, for the number on the roll on the 1st of January, 1876, was 88. After parading the streets, the members attended church, where the Rev. Canon Griffiths read the lessons and preached in English and Welsh. The text was taken from Phillippians, 4th chapter and 8th verse. After service, the members again paraded the streets to the music of the Pennal Brass Band, conducted by Mr. John Hughes. On reaching the Town Hall the members, to the number of about 100, sat down to an excellent dinner, pre- pared by Mrs. Jones, the Boot Inn. There was ample provision made for the guests, and the food was well cooked and well served. Mr. R. Gillart presided, and Mr. A. Hunt occupied the vice-chair. There were also present, the Rev. Canon Griffiths, Mr. J. J Griffiths, corresponding secretary of the district, Mr. Davies, sur- geon, Mr. Matthews, surgeon, Mr. Lloyd, surgeon, Mr. W. R. Jones, Mr. J. J. Jones, Mr. J. Rowlands, Mr. T. H. Evan, and Ir. Campbell. After dinner, the CHAIRMAN gave the "Queen, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and the rest of the royal Family." The toast was one that needed no speech from him, and therefore he asked them to drink to the Qaeen, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and the rest of the Roval Family." Song—Mr. J. Campbell. The CHAIRMAN said the next toast was the Bishop and Clergy of the Diocese, and the ministers of all other denominations," coupled with the name of Corion Griffiths. He did not know whether there was any other minister present, but if there was they would be veryglad to hear him. Canon GRIFFITHS said they must allow him to thank them sincerely for the honour they had done the sacred pro- fession he had the honour to belong to. (Cheers). It was their duty to help forward in every way they could the good of their fellow men. To meet so many of his parishioners at a time like that was a very yreat pleasure to him. He thought there was every prospect that their society would be very useful, as so many young people were gathered together by it. There was always iope where the young rallied. It was a step in the right direction that they weremet together in that room instead of in a public-house, where there was a temptation to drink more than they desired, as might be seen by the small number who were drinking intoximats. (Applause). This holding of the lodge and the anniversary in the Town Hall was a step in the right direction. He would conclave by wishing their society every success that could possibly come to them. (Cheers). Song-Mr. Davies. # The CHAIRMAN said the next thing was to hear the statement of accounts read by Jfr. Evans. Mr. EVANS said the members would be glad to hear that the society had made progress financially fad numerically. Mr. Evans then read the balance sheet, Vd at the conclusion pointed out that the accounts wire drawn out differently than they used to be. They woPd see that the sick and funeral fund and the managemffit fund were separated. The medical men had to be pjd for 187C and 1877 this year, and in other ways the ex- penses had been heavy, but still he was glad to say 'he receipts had been considerable. Mrs. Milton Davies l«wl given them a donation of £ 4. (Applause). The members given them a donation of 4:4. (Applause). The members had increased during the year, and he was glad to hy they had now eight honorary members. (Cheers). The Secretary then gave some interesting figures showing the progress of the society, and sat down amid cheering. Welsh song-Mr. Humphreys. The CHAIRMAN said the next toast was the Manchester Unity, coupled with the name'of Mr. J- J. Griffiths, cor- responding secretary of the district. (Cheers.) Mr. J. J. GRIFFITHS said the success of the Order to which they had the honour to belong might be estimated from the fact that during the past year 32,000 members were initiated and the Order numbered in all 526,802. The funds amounted to the large sum of 24,000,000. Mr. Griffiths then referred to the Friendly Societies Bill now passing through the Houses of Parliament, and said the amendments of the Commons had been accepted by the Lords, and they would hear no more of the objectionable t a-esty-third clause. Boards of Guardians would not be able to inflict a penalty upon the provident, but the funds of the societies would be protected. (Cheers.) With respect to the Aberystwyth district he might inform them that in sick benefits the sum of £ 733 19s. Id., had been paid dur- ing the year, and also £ 293 7s. lOd. in funeral money. Here was more than a 21,000 paid by one Order, and it was clear that without this payment the burden upon the poor rates would be heavier than it was. (Cheers.) Mr. Griffiths made some further remarks and concluded an in- teresting speech amid loud cheers. The CHAIRMAN said Mr. J. J. Griffiths had given them a very lucid and interesting statement. The facts it con- tained were well calculated to encourage them to go on in their work and do what they could to promote the princi- ples of Oddfellowship. Song—Mr. John Davies. The CHAIRMAN—The next toast is the Loyal Llynlloedd Lodge, coupled with the name of Mr. John Bennett Davies. (Cheers.) Mr. J. B. DAVIES said he was not accustomed to the work he had then to do, and he did not think he was the proper one to do it, but as he was there he would do his best, and in the first place he must say how glad he was to meet them with the lodge in such a flourishing condi- tion. (Cheers.) They had heard the balance sheet read, which showed they were making progress, but not, he was glad to sav, too fast. There were some things that grew all at once and died all at once, but the Llynlloedd was not one of those things. An old saying said that Rome died of progress. That was not the way with them, they "Tew gradually and cautiously, and as one speaker had pointed out, one great element of their strength was the laro-e proportion of young members they possessed. (Ap- plause.) He had read an article somewhere headed, "More Worlds than One," and it set him thinking that there was a world of music, a world a poetry, a world of science, and there was also a world of Oddfellowship. (Cheers.) The influence they exercised for good was second onlv to the pulpit. (Cheers.) 1 here was one thing he wished "to say before he sat down, and that was, that thev were scattered and did not meet very well at lodge nights, but they paid their subscriptions well. He.hoped in the future they would do better in the way of attending lodge meetings. (Applause.) The CHAIRMAN said the next toast was the Honnrary Members," coupled with the name of Mr. J. J. Junta. In responding, Mr. JONES said he was pleased the number of honorary members had reached the number of eight. (Applause.) The Lodge had great reason to be pleased with the rate of progress that had been made. This was the tenth anniversary, which reminded him of I a little story An Irishman went to pr. v his rent. His landlord gave him a glass of whiskey. and said, There, drink that, it is ten years old." "Ten years," said the tenant, "And sure is it not very sniaU for its age^ (Wllte;.)
