CARMARTHEN. TOWN COUNCIL.—A special meeting of the Carmarthen Town Council was held on Tuesday, June 26. Present: the Mayor (Mr. T. M. Davies), Aldermen Thomas, Norton, and Warren, and Councillors D. M. Morgan, H. Howells, D. Lewis, J. Hopkins, M.D., W. Cotterell, C. Finch, W. Llewellyn, H. Norton, junior, J. Morris, W. R. Edwards, J. Lewis, Thomas Thomas, and J. Victor. The special business of the meeting was to consider, first, the specification for the contract for scavenging the town; and, secondly, the claim made by Mr. Howell Thomas for compensation for injuries received by his being thrown from his dogcart in January last, in consequence, as he alleged, of an obstruction left on the road, near Picton's monument, by the officials of the corporation. The scavenging contract was adopted. On the suggestion of the Town Clerk, the claim of Mr. Howell Thomas was discussed in private, but we are informed that it was agreed that £ 200 be paid by the Corporation to Mr. Howell Thomas in discharge of all claims, including ex- penses, and that Mr. H. Thomas, after deducting the necessary expenditure of the litigation, will hand over to some local charity the balance.

LLAN AELHAIARN. SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION.—The triennial School Board election for this place took place on the 22nd June. The Board is to consist of five members, but ten were nomi- nated, of whom four withdrew, and six went to the poll. The result was as follows Mr. Alexander McClement, Trevor 221 Mr. Wm. BORTH. SANITARY PAROCHIAL COMMITTEE.—The Sanitary Par- ochial Committee of this place met on Friday, June the 22nd, at seven o'clock in the evening, in the Cambrian Hall, for the purpose of consulting as to the best way to supply Borth with water. The members present were the Rev. E. W. James, Brynllys; Mr. Ellis Jones, timber merchant; Mr. E. Jones, the Baths; Mr. J. Jenkins, Moelcerny; Captain J. Francis, Glanywern; Mr. A. L. Lewis, Post Office. Mr. D. Jones, the inspector, was in attendance.—Mr. Lewis proposed, and Mr. Jenkins seconded, that the Rev. E. W. James be elected chairman. On his refusal, it was then proposed by Mr. E. Jones, and seconded by Mr. Ellis Jones, that Mr. A. L. Lewis be elected chairman, which was carried unani- mously.—Mr. Jenkins proposed, and the Rev. E. W. James seconded, that Capt. J. Francis should be elected vice chair- man, which was carried.—Mr. E. Jones proposed, and Captain Francis seconded, that three should form a quorum. Carried.—Mr. Ellis Jones proposed, and Mr. E. Jones seconded, that Mr. Jenkins should request the Rev. J. Jones, the vicar, to get permission to hold the parochial meetings in the National Schoolroom at Borth. It was resolved that the present inspector should render his services to the Parochial Committee until further notice at a reasonable extra remuneration.—It was proposed by Mr. E. Jones, and seconded by the Rev. E. W. James, that the meeting be adjourned till the following Thursday evening, at seven o'clock p.m., and that Mr. George Lewis, Oswestry, should be written to in the meantime by the chairman, requesting him to meet the Board at the next meeting, and state at what annual rate he would supply the village with water. Carried unanimously.—The Rev. E. W. James proposed, and Mr. E. Jones seconded, that Mr. D. Jones, inspector, be authorized to purchase a minute book for the use of the Parochial Committee, and to act as clerk pro tem.

DINAS MAWDDWY. EARLY MUSHROOMS.—On Sunday, June 24, a few mushrooms were picked by our correspondent at Celyn- brithion. They were of the finest quality and taste. It is supposed the rain and warmth must have caused them to spring up so early in the season, as it is an exceptional occurrence to find mushrooms at this period of the year.

Iliff, of Victoria Terrace, successfully passed as second mate. Mr. Iliff was a pupil of Mr. Lewis Roderick, of this town. COUNTY COURT, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27.-Before Homersham Cox, Esq., Judge. A Tregaron Case.—Thomas Williams, Rheidol Foundry, Aberystwyth, sued J. Dewi Williams, Talbot Hotel, Tre- garon, Daniel Rowlands, Tregaron, and Thomas Williams, Union Workhouse, builder, Tregaron, for £ 36 2s. lOd. for work done for the new workhouse at Tregaron.—The plaintiff said that he did some work and delivered some goods for the new workhouse. The defendant Williams wrote to plaintiff and told him that if he wanted money after completing the work he would give him a bill at two months. A bill was sent, but the defendant did not re- turn it. Defendant told plaintiff that two gentlemen were willing to be sureties if plaintiff was not satisfied with de- fendant himself. Plaintiff's solicitor attended a meeting of defendant's crditors at Lampeter. In January, 1877, was the first time he heard of the two other contractors, but he heard a rumour when supplying the goods.—David Williams said heivas clerk to the Tregaron Board of Guar dians. From time to time cheques were drawn in the name of the three contractors. The money was paid with the knowledge of the three contractors. The building is now being completed by the three defendants. I have no doubt about it.—Cross-examined There was a tender en- tered into (produced). No joint tender was put in by the three defendants. The tender received was about Oct., 1875. There was a meeting of Guardians on the 26th Oct. There was anjentryin^the minute book, which witness read, to the effect that Thomas Williams's tender was accepted, and he was to obtain two sureties. On the 9th of Nov. Thomas Williams came and signed the contract. Some- body came with him, Daniel Rowlands, and J. Dewi Williams. They signed at the same time. J. Dewi Wil- liams said he was an hotel keeper at Tregaron. In Oct., 1875, defendant Thomas Williams wanted him to be a surety. Attended the Board of Guardians on the 9th of November. Did not send in a written tender. Went to the Board to become surety for Thomas Williams. The architect, Mr. George Jones, had no bond ready, and he and the Guardians said it would serve all the purposes if he signed the builder's contract. Had no interest what- ever in the profits. Never authorized Thomas Williams to pledge his credit with the plaintiff, nor with any other person. Up to the time defendant filed his petition wit- ness took no part in carrying on the contract, and never ordered a pennyworth of goods. Cheques were made out in the names of the three who signed the contract. Lent the builder money, and he used to return the money lent when he casted the cheques. -Cross-examined: Nobody expected a profit, unluckily, but he and Mr. Rowlands would have to pay the loss. Witness and Mr. Rowlands were finishing the building. Thomas Williams was work- ing at the building as a carpenter, and he was paid weekly wages. We gave bills for goods to this workhouse before Williams failed, Ellis and Owen, slate merchants, refused to supply goods unless they had more security than the man Thomas Williams. They signed a bill, and met it out of money received from the Guardians. The arrangement with Mr. Bubb did not make them liable for work done before Thomas Williams failed. Did not read the document before he signed it. Knew he was signing a joint contract. Had paid J. J. Griffith £100 out of money received from the Guardians. Signed the contract purely out of charity to Thomas Williams, who had just buried his wife, and he had nine children. Rowlands had spoken to him about an indem- nity. Had drawn out the paper respecting the indemnity himself.—Daniel Rowlands, Ystrad, said he attended the Board as Thomas Williams's bail. We were advised to sign as co-contractors and we did so. The architect had no bond with him, and they as a matter of form signed the contract. Did not authorise Williams to pledge his credit, but signed two bills. Took no part in the building until Williams filed his petition. He had a security signed by five people, securing him from loss. He would not sign the contract unless indemnified.—His Honour said Mr. Rowlands had shown his good sense by insisting on having security, and he would have shown more if he had had nothing whatever to do with the thing.—Thomas Williams, the defendant, was then put in the box, and corroborated the evidence given by the other witnesses.— Cross-examined After he got a writ promised to pay Williams in a month, but other people came on him from Liverpool, and he was forced to file a petition. He neither paid plaintiff nor the Liverpool firm.-His Honour re- served judgment.—Mr. A. J. Hughes appeared for plain- tiff, Mr. David Lloyd and Mr. J. W. Thomas for defen- dants. Claim for £ 2.—This was a claim for the keep of two colts. The plaintiff was John Jones, Aberbronant, and the defendants John Morgan, Tymawr, Llanrhystvd, and Richard Morgan, Red Lion, Llanrhyttyd. Defendants saw plaintiff in 1874, and asked him if he knew where they could obtain pasturage for two colts. They were to pay a sovereign each for the colts for the summer season. The two colts were_ sent to plaintiff. John Morgan had the conversation with him. Richard Morgan was present, but it was John who talked. Defendants were brothers, and each brother owned a colt. He had applied to John for payment. He promised to pay several times, but at last refused, because he said the colts had not had proper pasturage.—David Richards, Goginanfach, farmer, saw the colts soon after they went to Aberbronant. Never saw yearling colts in so bad a condition. The land where the colts were grazing was 8s. per acre, and the land where the cows were was worth 25s. an acre.-Griffitb Williams had a colt grazing with the colts in question. Paid a pound.—Morgan Richards said the colts were better when they went away than when they came. Cross-examined They could not be much leaner than when they came. (Laughter.) It was well remembered the season of 1874 was very dry. Did not know what the price was for keeping sheep for the season. He was a servant whose master told him to go and he went, and to come and he came, and he knew nothing about sheep.— David Jones, Plascrug, who was asked a question in Eng- lish, said I must have some other language beside that. In Welsh he said he paid 21 for a colt. Left his colt there after the grass was rather scarce.—For the defence John Morgan said he offered a sovereign for a colt if plaintiff would give him a good place. His brother Richard also sent his colt up. When the horses went up they were in good condition, but when they came back they were in a horrible state. Was only asked for the money once. Never promised to pay.—William Griffiths said the colts were in fair condition when they went up, and were not worse when they came down.—Judgment for £1 and costs. Grocery Claim.-Richard Humphreys, Ynyslas, sued John Andrew, Timber-yard, Ynyslas, for 24 5s. lid., for goods supplied and delivered.—The case was adjourned from the May court for the production of an account book.-Plaintiff said he always received payments. His wife never received payments except for goods sold over the counter. Credit customers came and paid on Satur- day nights. There was no instance of people paying in the day time.—Jane Andrews, defendant's wife, said she did not owe a halfpenny. She paid the wife of plaintiff. The last payment of lls. was about Christmas, 1875. The money was paid in witness's own house about two o'clock in the afternoon. The first payment was 21. The second payment was tl. From time to time all the money she owed was paid.—Harriet Humphreys said last witness had paid several sums of money. The first was a payment of £1. The second payment was 91. The next payment was lls. Asked for a further 6s. After that received 10s., 2s. 6d. or 3s. Her husband did not tell her to get the money. She owed Breeze 22 and paid it. He never asked where she got the money. She left her husband because she was not comfortable.—His Honour When were you married ?-Witness: It will be three years next September.—His Honour Where were you married ?—Witness Llanfihangel.—His Honour At the church ?-Witness: Yes.—His Honour: And you took your husband for better and for worse, until death did you part?—Witness Yes, I did take him.—His Honour And you foreswore yourself before God and man?- Witness He said sly words to me nasty.—His Honour —It is perfectly awful the way these people treat mar- riage, and set aside solemn obligations,—After most careful investigation, judgment was given for the amount claimed. J. H. Ravenhill v. John Pugh.This was a claim for 27 6s. for legal services rendered by the complainant a solicitor.—Plaintiff said the case was an appeal against a bastardy order. The defendant's daughter affiliated a child, and an order was made on the putative father, who appealed. Plaintiff appeared for the respondent. De- fendant went to plaintiff and asked him to appear for her. The girl went to Aberaeron, but she was too late, and the order was squashed.—The defendant, John Pugh, said he never went to Mr. Ravenhill, who agreed to take the case for £1 but when the day for hearing the case came on he wanted another sovereign, and witness gave him it. As for the appeal case, witness and plaintiff were in Morgans's Wine Vaults. Witness gave plaintiff a glass of whisky. He agreed to go to Aberaeron for 22. Just before going to to Aberaeron witnesswas with plaintiff, and agreed to give him £ 1 then and £ 1 when he got into the Court. Some people then came to his daughter and she made up. Witness then saw plaintiff in Mr. Watkins's wine vaults and told him it was no use to go to Aberaeron as it was all settled. Next morning plaintiff came and told his daughter and the witnesses they must go down with him or they would be liable to a fine of 910 each. Witness refused to go as they had signed the appeal and squashed the order over. Although the order was squashed he was the father of the child after all. (Laughter.) Plaintiff asked if he was to understand that he was the father of the child. (Laughter.) Plaintiff said he never agreed to conduct the appeal for B2. Plaintiff said he was willing to take three guineas and costs.—Judgment for that amount, his Honour remarking that Mr. Ravenhill had be- haved in a very handsome manner. LADIES' COLLEGIATE SCHOOL. The examination of this school ended on Saturday, June 23. The questions were set by Professor W. J. Craig, M.A., University College of Wales, the Rev. W. R. Lloyd, St. Michael's Church, the Rev. W. Evans, M.A., and the Rev. E. F. Jones, M.A. Each pupil has been carefully examined, and with the exception of two pupils the Principal has been highly pleased with the progress made. Some of the pupils who obtained the lowest marks at the previous examination headed some of the lists at the last. The reports of the examiners are as follows Professor Craig's-" The answers upon the whole are very satisiactory. The first three being very good. The one that heads the list is only a few marks skort of the maximum." The Rev. W. R. Lloyd's—" Your pupils have shown a marked and close acquaintance with the contents of the portions of the Scripture submitted for examination. The paper sent in by Mjas Katie Jjloyd does her very great credit, as do also the papers of the others" The Rev. W. Evans's—" This class is evidently well instructed. The pupils have mastered the subject, and all of them promise to be good composers." The distribution of prizes will take place after the pupils re-assemble. Next terms begins August 7th.

ABERAERON. PETTY SESSIONS, JUNE 20TH.—Before Major Lloyd Phillips (chairman) and Capt. J. G. P. Hughes. Escaped Reformatory Boys.—Two young boys named William Strawbridge and Thomas James, who had run away from the Reformatory School, Neath, and for whose capture P.C. Denis Williams and P.C. Phillips are entitled to the reward of £2, were brought before the magistrates charged with stealing one pair of stockings from off a hedge at Moelach, Llandysiliogogo. Thomas James was also charged with stealing one pair of boots from the dwelling-house of Crossway, Henfynyw.—Both prisoners were committed to take their trial at the next quarter sessions. Drunkenness.—P.C. D. Thomas, Newquay, charged Joshua Jones, Glyngolau Ucha, Llanllwchaiarn, with being drunk on the highway at Newquay. The offence was proved, and a fine of 2s. 6d., and costs, was inflicted. Stray Animals.—P.C. William Joseph charged Stephen Jones, Pencwm Ucha, Llansantffraid, with allowing two cows and one pig, his property, to stray on the highway near Llanon. Fined 2s. 6d., and costs.—John Jones, Pendre, lansantffraid, was charged with allowing two pigs of his to stray on the highway at Nebo. Fined Is., and costs, 6s. 6d. DOff Cases.—Mr. Joseph Pocock, Aberystwyth, charged Jenkin Evans, Penygaer, Llanbadarn, Trefeglwys, with refusing to produce a dog licence on the 3rd June. Fined 25s.—The same complainant appeared against D. Lloyd, Talwrncoch, Llanrhystyd, for keeping a dog without a licence. Fined 25s. A Scoundrel.—At the Clerk's office on Saturday, June 23, before Capt. Vaughan, Brynog, and Capt. Hughes, a man who assumed to be deaf and dumb, and who had made himself generally known throughout the town by the insolent manner in which he assailed persons who re- fused giving him alms, was brought before the magistrates, charged with having, on the previous Thursday, violently assaulted Mr. Timothy Morgan, Bryndewi, Llanddewi Aberarth, who had only refused to grant his application for alms. It seems that as soon as Mr. Morgan told him to quit, the prisoner first threatened, and then knocked him on the face, inflicting serious injuries above the eye. —The prisoner was sent to Cardigan gaol for one months' hard labour.

MACHYNLLETH. FAIR, JUNE 26TH.—The show of cattle at this fair was much under the average, but good prices were obtained. Horses were sold at a slight reduction on recent prices. Rain fell in torrents throughout the day. HIGHWAY BOARD, TUESDAY, 26th June.—-Present: Richard Jones, Esq. (chairman), Rev. J. W. Kirkham, Rev. W. Richards, Messrs. W. Pughe, W. Owen, D. Jones, H. Pughe, E. Jones, I. Evans. This was an extraordinary meeting, summoned to take into consideration a notice received from the Treasurer of the 4th District of Montgomeryshire Turnpike Roads of his intention to apply to the magistrates for an order of contribution in aid of the funds of the trust. After some discussion, it was agreed to ask the Justices to adjourn the consideration of the application till the August Petty Sessions, so as to give the Board an opportunity of getting it discussed at the ordinary meeting to be held on 4th July at two o'clock. Before the Board rose, the Rev. J. W. Kirkham congratulated his friend Mr. Jones upon his first appear- ance in the chair. It had given him: great pleasure to record his vote for Mr. Jones, and against himself, at the last meeting, as he thought it was well that the Chair- man should reside in the town. He would at all times be happy to give him any assistance in his power.—Mr. Jones expressed his thanks to Mr. Kirkham for his kind remarks.

STAYLITTLE. BAPTIST ANNUM, MEETING. — This place lies eignt miles north-west of Llanidloes, and on the road therefrom to Machynlleth. The Baptists in this neigbourhood held their church preaching anniversary this year on Monday and Tuesday, June 25th and 26th, when the three follow- ing ministers conducted the services—The Revs. Thomas Evans, Bulah, J. R. Jones (Ap Alltud), Llwynpia, and R. D. Roberts, Llwynfcendy. There was good attendance at the meetings.

LLANIDLOES. THE LATE MR. DAVID HAMER.—On Thursday, June 21, the mortal remains of the late Mr. David Hamer, draper, Corner Shop, in this town, whose death occurred on the Saturday previove, after a prolonged illness, were interred in their last resting place, in St. Idloes Cemetery. At about three p.m. a very large concourse of relatives* friends, and acquaintances, assembled to honour the memarj of the deceased. Before the cortege started a very priate address was delivered by the Rev. Peter 3oaes (Petros), minister of the Welsh Wesleyans, of whwfei con- nexion the deceased had been a faithful and consistent member for a great number of years. The funsral service was impressively performed by the Rector of the parish, the Rev. R. H. Jones, M.A. During the funeral theshopa were closed, and the blinds of the houses drawn down. On Sunday evening, at the Welsh Wesleyan chapel, a funeral sermon was preached by the Rev. P. Jones, min- ister of the place, who took for his text Psalm xxiii! 4. IDLOES. In the smoke room I found defendant drunk and incapable of giving an ex- planation respecting a dispute which had arisen about some change. I told him I should summon him.—Case adjourned to next gessions.-P.C. Lewis v. Edward Ed- wards.-Complainant said on the 13th June I saw the de- fendant at about 11 a.m. drunk in Short Bridge-street. I told him to go home. He Said he would, but instead of doing so he went to the Boot Inn, and thence to the Angel Inn, but was refused drink at both places.—Fined 5s. and costs paid. Furious Driving.-P.C. Lewis v. John Williams.—P.C. Lewis said: On Saturday, June 9, I saw defendant driv- ing a cart down the street at a furious rate. He came down opposite the Boot Inn where there were many people, ihe cart was stopped by Richard Jones at the time the cart knocked a little child down and had it not been for Jones the wheel would have passed over the child. The child was on the causeway and not on the street.-Fined 2s. od., and costs; allowed a week to pay. Cruelty to a Dog.—P.Q. Lewis v. Henry Caviel.—Com- plainant stated: On the 16th June I.heardadogyelpingfear- fully in the Butcher s Hall. I saw people running to the place. I went there and saw defendant beating a dog on the head with a large stick. He beat the dog till it laid down, and beat it again on the ribs. Defendant said that the dog had taken a piece of meat off the stall and he was correcting it. The dog belonged to defendant. The cor- rection was in my opinion quite unrea;sonable.-Richard Smith said I saw the bitch taking a piece of meat off the bench and told defendant. He went after her and took hold of her by the ear and brought her to the bench. The bitch made a great noise. Defendant struck her once or twice but not hard enough to hurt even a child."—John Thomas said On the day in question I heard a great noise from a dog. I went to the Butcher's Hall and saw defendart ill-treating a dog. I said to the police- constable that it was a case of brutality.—Fined Is., and costs. Breach of the Peace.-P.S. Sibbaldi v. John Higgs Richard Barnett, and John Hughes.—P.S. Sibbald said On the 26th May, being a fair day between 8 and 9 o'clock p.m., my attention was drawn to the White Lion Inn. I found the three defendants there fighting.—Edward jar- man said: I was with defendant Higgs at the time in question. Defendant Hughes called out to Higgs that he was enough of a man to take Higgs- into eustody. I then left.—Jane Davies said I am sister of the defendant Barnett. John Hughes struck at my brother, and missed him. Hughes then caught hold of my brother by the shirt collar, and tore it through. Charge of Stealing a Woollen Shirt Three Years Ago.- Eleanor Hughes was brought up on remand charged with stealing a woollen shirt, the property of Edward Wil- liams, miner, of the King's Head Yard, in Llanidloes, three years last March. A warrant was issued for her apprehension, but she then escaped. She was lately iden- tified by P.C. Humphreys at Cemmaes, and was re- manded to this petty sessions, when she was- committed for trial to the next Quarter Sessions. Non-Payment of Rates. -Numerous persons- were sum- moned for non-payment of borough rates, and ordered to pay. Non-Attendance at School.-Tliree persons were sum- moned for not sending their children to school, and were fined.

UP AND DOWN THE COAST. -J" -r-r- ,v"v"r. "AN EPISODE FROM CANTREV- Y-G WAELOD. (Continued from last week.) A man who hates his enemies goes some distance to- wards justifying enmity, and robs himself of his best de- fence against assaults from those who think his loss will be their gain. How can I love my enemies ? They are strong, and hold not their hand when occasion serves. My poverty is my best protection, but that is not sufficient to shield me from men who seek high place merely to serve private enJsl and to gratify personal loves and hates. After years of seeking, it has been made known to me how a man may love his enemies. The chief men think and act in ignorance. They walk in blindness. They will not build a rampart against the sea nor will they listen to the teachings of the wise men of old. To hate the chief men because they injure me in their wrong going would be the part of a fool. But when I sit down in loneliness when I see the people oppressed; when I think of the day when all this beautiful country will be buried beneath the sea when I think of the shortness of life, and remember its burdens and limitations, an anger arises in my heart, the light fades out of the sky. There is no more glory in the sun, nor beauty in the moon." It appears from the journal that Nidri began to suffer from poverty, which his labour at the loom had for many years kept at bay. There is the entry, "Nowork" very frequently. His loom stands idle. The chief men will not buy his sail cloth. They tell him he is a man of evil mind Bad heart, and leave him to starve. Even wicked men must eat or die," he writes, "and if sail cloth brings no bread I must go into the fields, and learn to cultivate the land." In seeking this new work he meets one Dalbren, a man possessed of many sheep and cattle. Nidri works in the fields, and at nights recites poems, and tells stories of old times. Dalbren's daughter, Dilys, a girl of fifteen years, Silt and listened to the strange man, who seemed to know everything. She knew little beyond what was taught by the experience of her home. The seasons came and went, and were only distinguished from each other by the changes they brought in the work of the house and farm. Twice she had seen great gatherings of the bards, and both times Nidri was there. He seldom noticed the girl, who moved about deftly, and looked at him with wistful eyes. She listened to long dis- cussions, in which the life of Nidri was laid bare, and her heart went out in a great longing to help the man. who seemed as far above her as the stars. Sometimes Nidri spoke gently to Dilvs, but then he spoke gently to dogs. His hand rested as tenderly on the arched neck of a horse a* on the head of Dalbren's daughter, and of the two, per- haps the horse seemed the nearer to him. Nidri seldom thought of I)ilvs, but Dilys pondered over the life of Nidri, and went over his misfortunes "\yhen °^y the imld-eyed cattle were there to witness her grief, or were her tears all grief-born. She was learning a deep sympathy, which then could only find expression in tears, with all that was true and holy in human suffering.. "I have taught Dalbren's daughter Dilys to read the poetry of the bards,"writes Nidri. "She quickly com- prehends. but is hard to understand. Her questions reach further back than life, and touch problems this world has no answers for. To-day she said that bards only write what other people think, and then asked me if bards like other people think a good deal more than they can write." About this time the entries in the journal are sometimes written by Nidri and sometimes by Dilys. For two years or more the record is one of common daily work about the house and farm. Nidri made his loom weave cloth of finer texture than that for sails, and taught the art to Dilys. She went to the town and sold in the markets the cloth woven by Nidri and herself. Dalbren worked on the farm and at night talked about poetry and ancient battles, and good men who lived in old times. Dilys always listened, but seldom spoke, except when writing in the journal, and then Nidri gave her answers that chafed the woman in the "irl. She had been his pupil. He had taught her to in- terpret Nature, but he kept her in the vestibule of life. In his poetry which she read and understood he described how his whole being suffered from the frosts of neglect; how human life has deeps and shallows how men in old times failed to recognize the gods how homely good h;1 ever been spurned for glittering evil; how the way to noble life was through suffering how familiarity with any good seems to make it less gOJd, and even sometimes less than good. Dilys did not love Nidri. He was older and greyer than Dalbren, her father. He had given the world in which she lived voices innumerable, so that no longer all things seemed always the same but she did not love. The voices were pleasant to hear, although they brought no distinct message te her. She felt within herself a power to be, and this feeling grew into definiteness when Nidri spoke, and sank into vagueness when he was silent. The beginning of all things seemed to date in her mind from the coming of Nidri. With him life was waning; with her it was growing to the meridian of glory and power. Dalbren gathered in his harvests, and thought little of the old poet, whose words were not always understood by"hThe sea will be kept out during our time," said Dal- bren, and why, therefore, need we vex ourselves." But see how great the loss if all the plain is swallowed up to the bases of the hills. Men should toil for those who will follow, or those who follow will not think kindly of them that went before. Our chief men seek a narrow good, and spend days vainly while the sea beats at the broken ramparts." Our chief men say, Everything will last our time.' But if they were good men and wise all time would be theirs. They are like men who eat the seed they ought to sow who burn the trees they ought to save for'fruit. They do a little wrong because they think a little wrong is profitable. No wrong is good, however great the gain may magnify itself. The priests themselves, for trooa in words despised, are slow to see the ill from which ft comes. Chief men and priests with rogues make com- mon cause for common ends. All the while the sea beats at the mouldering ramparts in which a storm this night may madly tear a breach. They drove me from them years long past to die or beg but neither was to be, at least not then." Nidri," said Dilys gently, "my father sleeps." Nidri sighed. Dilys heard the heavy breath, and the old desire to°be of help grew strong, and might have framed itself into a cry, if Dalbren just then had not roused from sleep and said, Yes, Nidri, the sea will be kept out during our time. You, child, go to rest." Nidri died as lie had lived, alone. The journal breaks off with this entry, in his own handwriting :—" I have made friends, and since then life has become more glo- riously beautiful than before. To see the blue lights 0 on the mountains, to hear the roar of the ocean can be mine never again. The hate of the chief men has followed me tn the end My life, like a pitcher broken at the fountain, Sves back to its source all it holds of good I purposed to bless my countrymen, and they cursed me. «o life springing from mine, in gentler speech will repeat the les- sons I have tried to teach. All who might have made my labour fruitful turned away in scorn from the poor man who spent his life at the loom. They were blind, and cruel in their blindness. If only one life bad been given mf • one life to fill with high aim. It is hard to be utterly alone, and so to die. -vr-i Dilvs day by day watched JN ldn, and saw that he was 1 for another world. Dalbren too, saw that he waS pale and thin; but, if he thought at all, put down the change to poetry and too much learning Dilys strove wdin those last days by many ways that Isidnsteach- in- hid made plain, to come near to her master, but he fenced her off with trifling words and acts. Unconscious of the help so near at hand, he chilled the soul that secretly had read his own. Dilys was doubtful of her nower and filled with reverence for the dying bard, con- fined herself to acts of simplest service. She was Dalbren s daughter—the little girl he taught to read and write when finthe sought refuge from the chief men. How could a girl like Dilys measure Nidri's sphere of thought ? IS ever to the end did Nidri ask this question. Never once was he so near understanding the life he had unfolded as to ask how much she thought and knew. He had looked for this very life through many toilsome years, and when brought near it, failed to recognize it.. Nidri is dead,'1 was the entry made by JJilys m his iournal, and then there comes an account of the funeral, signed by Drudwen, the bard. Nidri was buried in a leafy dell. The bards sang wild chants. Dalbren stood at the "rave side, and tried to count the sheep in the distance. Dilys was at the burial. Men moved before her eyes and there were sounds of singing in her ears but nothing was distinct but the waving to and fro of a tiny blue flower at the edge of the grave. She moved when others moved, and remembered that in her dreams something like this had often happened. Absurd thoughts recurred to her memory, and she would have laughed aloud if the little blue flower had not just then dropped into the grave. Keeping a Dog ivithout a Licence.-—Thomas Lavender charged Joseph Brodie with this offence.— Patrick Ryan said I am an officer of excise. Defendant had a dog in his possession on the 21st of May. He had no licence.— Fined 2;)s. Carrying a Gun without a Licence.—Hugh Hughes, Arthog, was charged with this offence. William Tucker said I live at Arthog and am gamekeeper to Mr. Davies. I saw defendant on the 23rd May. He had a gun in his possession. I never saw him before with a gun.—De- fendant admitted having no licence.—Fined B2 10s. Vaughan deposed I saw defendant yesterday morning at 20 minutes past 6 a.m. he was in Friddarw wood. I saw him picking up some snares. He took one away. I got the other. There were no rabbits in them. I saw them there the night before. Defendant told me he thought of having a few rabbits.—Fined 40s., and costs. Assault.-P.C. Cadwaladr Jones charged David Roberts with assaulting him.—Defendant not appearing, the service of the summons was proved by P.C. R. Vaughan.—P.C. Cadwaladr Jones said I saw the defendant on the 19th May at the Cross Keys. He was drunk he gave me several blows with his fist; he was very unruly. I was called to the house. The defendant was ordered to be im- peisoned for two calendar months with hard labour. COUNTY COURT, TUESDAY, JUNE 26th.—Before Mr. Homersham Cox, judge. The Cobden Mills Company, Wrexham, ,v. John Davies, Montgomery House, Barmouth.—Mr. Radford, the owner of the mill, appeared in support of his claim of 4d., balance of account due, and Mr. W. R. Davies appeared for the defendant.—The defendant claimed a set .off of £25, being the amount paid to plaintiff's traveller, Mr. Parry, for which amount no credit had been given, and a further sum on account of empties returned, &c., which amount was agreed to. The only difficulty in the case was as tothe £ 25.—The plaintiff's traveller, Mr. Samuel Parry, of Llansantffraid, was called, and denied having received from the defendant a sum of JB18 (a receipt for which amount was produced at the hearing). The traveller swore that he only received jS8, but he admitted being drunk at the time, and did not know how the money was paid. He admitted that the receipt was for JE18, but he could not account for it. He also denied that he had received the JE15 on the 14th of March, 1876, but when the defendant was called and gave his evidence in a very clear way, stating in what money the traveller was paid in each instance, it seemed that Mr. Parry had no recollection of the circumstances.—The Judge, in giving judgment, commented very strongly upon Mr. Parry's evidence, and stated that upon his own confession he was drunk at the time when the receipt for jB18 was given, and that defendant had given his evidence in a very clear way, stating that he had paid with one £10 note, £7 10s. in gold, and four half-crowns and that, taking into consideration that he (Mr. Parry) was found to be wrong in one instance, and that he himself admitted being drunk at the time, and the very unsatisfactory manner in which he gave his evidence, there would be a judgment for the plaintiff for jE7 13s. 4d., as desired by the defend- ant.—On the application of Mr. Davies, the Judge, in order to mark his disapprobation, declined to allow Mr. Parry his expenses.

GLYN HAFREN. NEW CHAPEL. — The Independent connexion com- menced their career in this neighbourhood about fifty years ago. Their first chapel was erected in 1829. In conse- quence of its decaying state, and being too small for the congregation, they have built this year a very commodious and elegant new chapel, which was free of all debt the time of its opening. This took place on Wednesday and.Turs. day, June 20th and 21st, when the following ministers conducted the opening services :—The Rev. D. S. Thomas, Llanfair, J. Davies, Shrewsbury, W. Nicholson, Liverpool, and Owen Evans, Llanbrynmair. The sermons were ex- ceedingly able, and the meetings very well attended from beginning to end. PUMLUMON.

Cattle. LIVERPOOL, MONDAY.—There was a small increase in the supply of stock from last week, the numbers being 1,570 beasts and 8,654 sheep and lambs. Country customers were more numerous than last week.
