SHREWSBURY. POLICE BUSINESS, SATUEDAY.—Before J. T. Night. ingale and T. Pidduck. Esqrs. i Exposing Diseased Pigs.—Thomas Evang, pig dealer, Chester, was charged with exposing in the Smithfield, on the 19th December, twenty-eight pigs which were at the itne suffering from foot-and-mouth disease. Mr L. L. Peele prosecuted. The case was proved by P.C John t'loydand Mr Litt, V.S.—The defendant, who pleaded gnorance, was fined £ 5, and costs. TUESDAY. -Before J. T. Nightingale, T. Pidduck, J. "Watton, and T. Groves, Esqs.. Charge of Stealing Fifteen Sovereigns. Charles Smith, hawker, was charged with stealing a leather bag containing fifteen sovereigns, the property of Thomas Bigford, labourer, Woolaston, on Sunday evening. Mr H. Morris appeared for the prisoner.—Thomas Bigford said I was to Shrewsbury on Saturday last, and on Sunday I was at the Cross Guns, the Crow, and the White Horse public- houses I was there on Sunday evening. I had 216 18s. 'When I came to town all gold, except the 8s.; it was in an old leather purse, in an inside waistcoat pocket. I had a drop of beer on Sunday. I saw a man in Drayton's Who had hit me some time ago, and I said I would fight him. I pulled off my coat and waistcoat to do so. I Palled the money out and offered it to a man named Maurice Jones, but he would Dot have it, and I put the Eloney back in the waistcoat. The prisoner then took my coat and waistcoat; the prisoner helped me on with my coat and waistcoat. Airs Drayton asked me if I had got Inr money, and I said "No," and the prisoner was toissing that was two or three minutes after. The pri- soner came back in about ten minutes, and I laid bold of him. and I said If you will give me 214 I will forgive you the other sovereign;" he said he had not got it. I 0 .erwards gave the prisoner in charge. About twenty toinutes to eight I heard a noise in the street, and went out to see what was the matter, and I saw P.C. Preece taking the prisoner up the street. "When I was going back I kicked something I picked it up, and found it as money wrapped in paper, and I gave it to my father it was on the step of our own front door. When I picked it up there was a great crowd round the house. Alex- ander Williams, father of the last witness, corroborated.— Edward Drayton said: I am the son of John Drayton, landlord of the White Horse. On Sunday night I saw P.C. Preece take the prisoner out; I saw them wrestling by Mr Williams's front door, in the street; they were on the ground together close to Mr Williams's step Mr iII'tHHams afterwards brought me the money produced, >t • ^anert—P.O. On being charged the prisoner said he knew nothing about it. —Committed for trial at the Borough Sessions, bail being tefused.
