THE GOSSIPING GUIDE TO WALES gives all the information Anti- JL quarians, Botanists, Geologists, Anglers, Pedestrians, Lovers of Scenery, and the World of Tourists want to know in their rapid tours through Merioneth, Montgomery, Carnarvon, Denbigh, Cardigan, Radnor, and Brecon. 1I.J THE GOSSIPING GUIDE TO WALES, CONTAINING :— On and Off the Cambrian. From Dee to Sea by Great Western. Vale of Llangollen to Vale of Clwyd. Carnarvon, Llanberis, and round Snowdon. Llanrwst, Bettws-y-coed. The Little Guage Line at Festiniog. Mid Wales and the Valley of the Wye, Etc., Etc., Etc. The Edition of 1870, which proved so popular, and of which more than Two Thousand Copies were sold in Six Weeks, was confined to the Cambrian and Mid Wales Railways. The new Book will include Great Western and other routes, as stated above. ADVANTAGES OF ADVERTISING IN THE GOSSIPING GUIDE TO WALES:- 1.—The Gossiping Guide to Wales will not, like Local Guide Books, which only include one locality, be excluded from the Booksellers' Shops of other towns, but being adapted for all the attractin e parts of Wales, the sale will be maintained in all alike. 2.—Thi Gossiping Guide to Wales is filled with amus- ing incidents and traditions, as well as with practical directions to Anglers, Pedestrians, Botanists, and other Pleasure Seekers, consequently it will meet with a sale where mere matter-of-fact books would be a dead letter. 3.-The Gossiping Guide to Wales follows the lines of Railway, therefore has an advantage over the old Guide Books, which traverse the long-unused Coach-roads. 4.-The Gossiping Guide to Wales, being issued by pub- lishers who have a large advertizing connection in the Principality, will be sold in every town and village of note in the Welsh Counties. 5.-The Gossiping Guide to Wales will be published in London, and at all the leading Railway Bookstalls, and will get into the hands of Tourists before they arrive at the towns they visit. EMBELLISHED WITH FOUR COUNTY MAPS. THE GOSSIPING GUIDE TO WALES is intended to be the most com- JL plete Shilling Book that can possibly be remunerative: consequently -small, but clear, readable type has been used, and as much-letter-press given as is usually to be found in a half- guinea volume. The aim of the writer has been to steer as far as possible from the dull and stilted phraseology of guide books, and to give as much really interesting and useful-and sometimes novel -information, as he could possibly collect into the compass. As the new railway routes have been followed, instead of the old roads, the book will be found of far greater importance to modern tourists than the ancient guide books. "What has been longest known has been most considered, and what has been most considered is best understood." I L IF E IS THE GIFT OF GOD. When we are sick this life is obscured under a cloud, oppressed with humours. EXPERIENCE Has taught us certain me ins which never fail for their removal. Shall we not avail ourselves of these means, and thus restore our HEALTH, OUR LIFE. This course seems to be our dutv. THE CHILD Receives with his life the seeds of his death. It may take one or one hundred years before the seeds bear their sad fruit, but just as sure as the seeds of death ripen, life ceases. PURGING Is the grand safeguard, because then what fosters the seeds of dth are taken away, expelled from the body. The most celebratpd Purgative is BRANDRETH'S PILLS, Which are unerring. Their widespread reputation in America proves intrinsic merit. Nothing but good qua'ities have placed them in the position they occupy in PUBLIC ESTIMATION. When all hope has gone, their use has given blessed health. Let the sick again feel the pleasure of a sound body by their aid. Millions bless the dav they becamp acquainted with BRANDRETH'S PILLS, WHICH CLEANSE THE BLOOD FROM IMPTJRITIES. What a meaning and application that fact carries. THE LIVER, THE SPLEEN, THE KIDNEYS, AND THE HEART. ARE BROUGHT INTO HARMONIOUS ACTION. HEALTH, LONG LIF P, AND VIGOUR OF MIND AND BODY ARE THE SOLID GAINS. THE USE OF BRANDKETH'S PILLS produces an activity in the circulation which occasions the BLOOD to throw off what is HURTFUL; And their GOOD EFFECTS are not counterbalanced by any inconvenience. Being composed entirely of HERBS, they do. not expose those who use them to any danger their effects are as CERTAIN as they are SALUTARY. They are daily and safely administered to infancy, youth, manhood, old age, and to women in the most critical and delicate circumstances they do not disturb or shock the animal functions, but restore the r order and RE-ESTABLISH THEIR HEALTH. Those who are SICK and use a few boxes hardly know themselves afterwards. From being DULL, they ire LIVELY From being. SALLOW, their complexions are CLEAR From having no APPETITE they long for the DINNER HOUR f And after their USE all the functions of nature go on with REGULARITY. If the bowels were costive, they are so no more If the SLEEP was disturbed, it is now SOUND and REFRESHING; If there we & PAINS or local affections, thev are now GONE. DR LULL, A distinguished physician of Potsdam, N. Y., who has used them in his practice for 30 years, says: They are a VEGETABLE CO MPOUND. THEY INVIGORATE. PURIFY, AND CLEANSE THE BLOOD, Correct and regulate all the SECRETIONS* And, by purgation, discharge the whole mass of MORBID MATTER From the bodv without REDUCING THE "STRENGTH." T'O BE REMEMBERED. BRANDRETH'S PILLS expel the poisons or humours which cause us to be sick. Every time one is purged by this remedy he has less poison in his system, and relatively more life. Persons of spare habit and delicate organization gain flesh and vigour while using them. rp C> REMEMBER. A dose more of BRANDRETH'S PILLS than re- quired will never hurt you, but not taking a dose when required may cost you your life. As. to the dose of Pills, we refer to D. D. Wright, Esq,. corner of Houston and Lewis-streets, New York, who kas sold Brandreth's Pills at his store for 30 years, r and who administered to a patient whose bowels, for a week, had resisted the united efforts of the medicines of three-physicians, and who left her to the last consola- tions of religion. To this patient was given Brandreth's Pills in doses of four each, broken up and mixed with molasses, every two hours, until they operated He gave-, in 32 h rnrs, 64' Pills, and thus saved a valuable life. The patient was restored to health immediately, and became more healthy than she had been for years. rpESTIMONIALS AND ILLUSTRATIONS. Letter from General Paez, the Washington of Venezu- ela, in favour of Dr Brandreth's Pills. New York, May 30, 1865. Hon. B. BRANDRETH.—My Dear Sir,—I have received the supply of your invaluable Pills, which you have so kindly sent me. I have not only used them myself in South America, as well as in this country, for the last 30 years, never allowing myself to be without them, but have purchased: them by the gross, to distribute to per- sons upon my estates and elsewhere, having found them efficacious in almost every variety of disease, especially those peculiar to the southern continent. I esteem, therefore, very highly the supply you now send me, and thank you very cordially for the kind words in which you convey your generous and friendly senti- ments.—I am, very respectfully, your obedient ser- vant, JOSE A. P AEZ CON SUM P T C U R E Th- Hammonton, N.J., May 7, 18(11. Dr BP^NDRETH.— Dear Sir,—I have long wanted to write to- you, and express my gratitude for the beneficial effects that have been experienced in my own faimly, and in hundreds, aye, thousands of others, by the use of Brandreth's Pills. The first year my friend Brockway sold your pills in Boston, 1838, I was then in a dfeelining state cf health, and my tVie-nd, as well as myself, sup- posed that my earthly voyage would soon terminate. Air Brockway urged me to take the Brandreth Pills but having used so much medicine with no good effect, I was more inclined to let nature take its- course and calmly submit to my fate. Mr B. offered to give me one dozen boxes if I would take them as prescribed. By this I saw he had great faith in them, anti I finally con- seated to take them, but not as a gift. I went home, and went at it most hopelessly. After taking one box I began to feel better. Well, sir, when I h-td used up my twelve boxes, I was well, a healthy man-my weight having one-from 131 pounds up, to. 152 pounds. I then ordered a supply, and between that time and the present I have retailed 3,000 dols. worth of these invalu- able Pills, and am quite sure that I have thereby been instrumental in saving not huudreds, but thousands cl lives. -Yours truly, C. J. FAY, • CERTIFICATE OF TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS. USE. Newcastle, Westchester Co., N.Y., Aug. 11th, 18611. Dr- R. BRANDRETH.— Mv Dear Sir,—I am now 79 VParo 0l'1 an(I for the last 28 years have been a conecant us^iM)fyoiu- Vecretible Universal Pills when sick, fully realising the advantage of enforcing purgation with a medicine which, while harmless in its nature, removes aU impurities. I can safely say that the vigorous old age I now enjoy has been caused mainly by the timely use of Brandreth's Pills. I have had in these last 28 years several fits of sickness, and occasionally some in- firmity of age woukl press upon me. At these- times I have always found your Pills a sure remedy, giving me not only health, but strength. I consider them, therefore, not only invaluable as a purgative, but also as a tonic—qualities possessed by no other medicine known to me. I have never during these last 28 years used any other medicine whatever, being convinced by experience that none was as good. Brandreth's Pills have also been freely used bv my neighbours in every kind of sickness, and have never been known to fail when promptly administered.—Yours trulv, NATHANIEL HYATT, Justice of the Peace for 40 years in Westchester Co., N.Y. Sing Sing, Oct. 9, 1868. Dr BRANDRETH.—My Dear Sir,-I have used your Pills for 25 years, when I have needed phytic- -ley are my only family medicine, and, timely «»e ^p mv family in good health I cheerfully endorse all that my father, Nathaniel Hyatt, has written in h:, certifi- cate of 28 years'use, which at this date is lully AJ years. He is still in good health, and now m his 8ith year Yours very truly, HYATT, j U.S. Assessor of 10th District, New York. I HEUMATI8M CURED. Brooklyn, October 5th, 1866. To Dr BRANDRETH.—It gives me pleasure to state the good I have experienced from your Pills. Since I com- menced their use I have felt in all respects like a new man, and the rheumatism I took them to relieve has entirely disappeared. At first I was prejudiced against them, because their operation was attended with a severe griping but on a further experience I am con- vinced such pains were only caused by the medicine struggling with and removing certain obstructions in. the bowels. I commenced with taking five pills every night on going to bed, and by an increase of one pill every evening ran the quantity up to twelve pilla, which number I continued to take for ten days, ana then gradually reduced to five pills at a dose. With the exception of the first three doses, I have experienced no pain or griping. I took the pills for 24 days. The Brandreth Pills take right hold of all that isdeleterous in. the bowels, aiid, as I said before, I now feel like a new man, and deem it my duty to express my gratitude to you. —Sincerely your friend, FRANKLIN L. MR E. YATES AND WELSH POEMS. It wilr be remembered that when Mr Yates was ap- pointed judge- of the poetical contributions to-the National Esteddfod^ be unreservedly condemned the specimens placed bef«»rt him, and advised the committee- to withhold the prizes, a course of conduct which drew upon his head r the anatbiHifias of the disappointed poets. Mr Ya'es thus refers to the matter in the, current nlimber of Lmdon I Society :—There are probably very few perscos in the worhl-sn-e editors of periodicals, wl position is very much that of same persons shut up in a lunatic asylum— who have any notion of the enorsiom amount of bad verse which is afloat in the world in the shape of MS., and which occasionally ft wfe its way into print. It has YL,c,ria thmn once happened to me to have- been particularly favoured in this respect, and because- when called upon to do so I have, as is my habit, expressed my candid op-inkm, r I have naturally heen assailed with trho bitteltst railings.. On one occasion a friend of mine, highly" esteemed by the musical public, who happens to be a Welshman, begged me to sit in judgment MI a certain nui&be; ci which were sent in in competition fiw a prize to be awarded at an approaching Eisteddfod. I at once re-fused, but at his earnest solicitation was finally induced to consent. I looked through the poems, there weve nearly a hundred » in number 0f them and I wrote honestly to the com- mittee, that though during a seven years* experience as the editor of a L .ncl¿¡.n nwgaz-ijie I had rrecessarily seen an enormous quantity/^ ^trse, I had scarcely ever j met with any so atrocious as those- submitted to me by them, and that I conscientiously advised them to defer the preftnt tion of the prize until the noxt year, when possibly a better set of competitors might be found. I need scarcely say the result of this candour was that, I was denounced as a blockhead and a scoundrel by every one of the poets, and held up to execration by the news- papers, some in the English language and some in word* consisting "f a vowel-less complication of consonants which looked extremely awful, but which, happily, I c,uld not understand. Nearly four years have elapsed since then, but I have never since ventured without fear and trembling across the borders of the Principality. Perhaps it may interest some of mv Welsh friends to heap that within the last month I have come across a poem which is certainly worse than anything submitted to me bv the Eisteddfod Committee. It is called Lines on the Marriage of the Princess Louise,' and is so exquisitely bad as to be well worth quoting:- Tlio, Queen has consented, gives her daughter in marriage, r To the Marquis cf Lome, Jet us rally around, And boast, then, with ride. to receive them with honour. Her fortune to have, which is due from the Crown. 'It's our duty to support our Queen and our country, And the laws that S"P") It our Queen, that now reigas, Show no resentment, bless with contentment, May the banner of England never be stained. 'MaT v, ry Englishm nV heart be joined with the ScotchmaUg And grant him that wi,ll, and aood wishes, too, To receive the Queen's daughter, our Princess Louise, And now with our heart's rejoice and be true. The morning's now come, let us hail it with pride, The Princess L )uise to be th"n, hi, Bride, Mny their hearts be mantled with happiness and peace, Shed health over palace, many blessings increase,'
