EIGHT DAYS IN AN OPEN BOAT? The American barque Frank Pendleton, from San Francisco, arrived at Queenstown on Monday, haying on board the chief officer, named Olston, of the British barque Arklow, who was rescued from an open boat in an insensible condition on May 16 last, south of the equator. The Arklow was in collision on May 8 with an unknown vessel. After the collision the captain, his wife and child, and 10 of the crew took to the lifeboat at midnight, as the vessel was sinking. Mr. Olston at the same time went into a small punt alone. The boats parted company in the night, and Olston was for eight days without food save a few flying fish, and when rescued by the American vessel was in a state of unconsciousness. It is feared those in the other boat have all been lost. ! AN IRISH BREACH OF PROMISE.
AN IRISH BREACH OF PROMISE. The trial of an action for breach of promise of marriage, in which the plaintiff was of the male sex, terminated on Saturday in Dublin before the Lord Chief Baron and a special jury. The action was by Mr. Thomas B. Moore, of Leyhlin-bridge, county Carlow, and the defendant was Miss F. M. Bartholo- mew, of Montrean-lodge, Blackrock, county Dublin. The defendant admitted the promise, but pleaded that it was conditional, and her case was that, after actually ordering her marriage dress, she heard from her mother what she considered a hitch in the marriage, that the plaintiff was a drunkard and a man of immoral character. Subsequently she heard that he had been confined in a lunatic asylum. For these reasons she broke off her engagement. The jury awarded the plaintiff £ 100 damages.

WHOLESALE DESTRUCTION OF WINE On Saturday, in the presence of, and assisted by, i the members of the Highgate Gospel Temperance Help One Another Society, Mr. William Green, of Bishopwood House, Highgate, the president of the society, destroyed his cellar of wine, about 2500 bottles, valued at about i'600. In a speech explain- iag his reasons, he said that after mature reflection and earnest prayer, he had come to the conclusion that it was G-od's will that he should part with the contents of his wine cellar. Three methods were pressed upon him from time to tim<=». One was to sell the wine to the trade, knowing that they would sell wine whether his or not; the second was to sell it and give the money to some charity; and the third was to give it, as it was, to the hospitals. In pursuing the first course, he would be participating in the sale of an article which had been proved to mili- tate against the physical, social, and spiritual advance- ment of society, The same reasons were equally ap- plicable to the second course, and beyond them there was in addition the inconsistency of causing injury i to others in order to benefit someone else. The third ? course was met by the success of the London Tem- | perance Hospital, where it had been proved that | alcohol was not necessary in the treatment of any disease. After this address the contents of the bottles were poured into the sewer.
