(1285) I PROFESSOR LOISETTE'S SYSTEM OF MEMORS TRAINING.-Since the appearance of a paragraph in Knowledge, mentioning (with my sanction) that an Assistant of 'ours' had tested Professor Loi- sette s Method of training the memory, with most satisfactory results, I have received several hundreds or letters asking for my own opinion of the System. To these I have been unable to reply, first because I ■ i!lv know what Professor Loisette's Method might be, and secondly because the letters reached me in too great abundance. But, wishing to respond to these correspondents, I have taken advantage of the period of rest from travel recently enjoined me to examine thoroughly the Loisettian System. I have not been content to try it in my own case only, but, knowing how greatly memories differ in quality, I have made the inquiry in company with two rela- tives, whose powers of memory are very different from mine—in some points superior, in others I think not quite so good. The result in every case has been to confirm fully what my friend Dr. Andrew Wilson has said respecting the System. Whether regarded as a device for memorising, or in its more important aspect as a System of memory- training, Professor Loisette's_ Method appears to me admirable. I have tested it in my own case on those matters in which my memory is least trust- worthy, perhaps because least exercised; and I have been surprised to find how easily and pleasantly I can fix such matters in my mind, almost without an effort, yet in such a way that I am satisfied they are there for good. My two companions in the inquiry have had in one sense the same experience, in another sense an experience entirely different; they have tested the System on entirely different subjeefs, but with the same satisfactory results. I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending the System to all who are in earnest in wishing to train their memories effectively, and are therefore willing to take reasonable pains to obtain so useful a result -R. A. PROCTOR. LISTEN TO YOUR WIFE. THE Manchester Guardian, June 9th, 1883, JL says-"At one of the windows looking on the woodland ways, with clumps of rhododen- drons and great masses of May blossoms, there was an interesting group. It included one who had been a cotton spinner, but was now so paralysed that he could only bear to lie in a re- clining position." This refers to my case at the Home for Incu- rables. I was first attacked twelve years ago with locomotor ataxy-a paralytic disease of nerve fibre rarely ever cured-and was for several years barely able to get about, and for the last five years not able to attend to my business as cotton agent, although many things have been done for me, the last experiment being nerve-stretching, two years ago. I was voted into the Home for Incurables, Mauldeth Hall, Heaton Mersey, near Manchester, in May, 1882, a home that ought to be more widely known, where poor afflicted ones have every suitable comfort and attention. I am no advocate for anything in the shape of patent medicine, and made many objections to my dear wife's constant urging to try Hop Bitters, but finally, to pacify her, consented. I had not quite finished the first bottle when I felt a change come over me. This was Saturday, November 3rd. On Sunday morning, in dressing, I felt so strong on my legs. I said to my bed- room companions I was sure I could walk; so started across the floor and back. I hardly knew CO?^'rl myself. I was all over the house. After finishing the first bottle, I had four days to wait for the second, and by the time it came I had fallen back considerably. Two days after I began to take the second my walking came back, and now, as the Home are finding the Bitters for me I am gaining sirength each day, and can walk quite safe without stick or any other support. I am now at my own house, and hope soon to be able to earn my own living again. I have been a member of the Manchester Royal Exchange for nearly thirty years, and was most heartily con- gratulated on zoing into the room on Thursday last.—Very gratefully yours. T?Q M .A TT. The safest and most efficacious remedy ever dis- covered for all pulmonary diseases, sore or congested lungs, consumption, coughs, colds, sore throats, hoarseness, &c. An uncompounded product of Nature secreted in the netals of Horehound blossoms and gathered by the honey bee. SUCCESS IN THE PURSUITS OF LIFE depends much on a thorough knowledge of every branch pertaining to the vocation the individual chooses to follow. Yielding to the early inclination of making the study of the honey bee a professional one, Mr. Hoge's life-long association and continual study has been with them. This gave him un- equalled facilities for investigating the curative properties of various kinds of honeys, and enabled him to discover and corroborate the wonderful healing powers of Horehound Honey. IT IS A COMMON ERROR to think that any kind of Honey will make a good cough mixture, and we regret to say most chemists employ Honey'as a basis for such medicines, without the least dis- crimination as to its source. It would be just as rational to expect any kind of bark to make good quinine. Francois Huber, Baron Liebig, and Sir John Lubbock agree with all other investigating naturalists in the assertion-that the characteristics of various Honeys are attributable to the plants from which they are gathered. Xenophon tells us that all his soldiers who ate of the Honey found in the villages on the mountains of the Colehians lost their senses that those who ate but little were like men very drunk, and those who ate much like mad- men. Pliny accounts for this by saying the honey was gathered from the flowers called Bhododenros, while of the Horehound plant Keats beautifully says- "The bee, with sense so subtly true, From Horehound herbs extracts the healing dew." HONEY IS NOT MADE BY THE BEES, they are simply the vehicles provided by an all-wise Providence for conveying the Honey from the petals )f the blooms and depositing it into the cells of the aoneycomb. Notice a bee as it alights and insinuates itself into the very heart of the flowers, and you will lave no difficulty in observing by a telescope motion )f its body that it is sucking or rather pumping the lrop of nectar into its honey sack, which is lined with i muscular tissue. When filled the little almoner )f nature flies away to its hive, and, by compressing ;he muscles of its honey sack, deposits the Honey nto the cells. The Honey undergoes no digestion, md is chemically the same in the hive as in the )etal of the flower. The LORD MAYOR of LONDON ORDERS IT. MANSION HOUSE, LONDON, E.G., September, 28, 1883. The LORD MAYOR would thank Messrs. W. M. Hoge^ and Co. to send him half a dozen of their Hoge s Horehound Honey, which has been well recommended to him. W. L. BRIGHT, ESQ., son of the Right Hon. KINGDON has great pleasure in bearing testimony to the excellent properties of Hoge's Horehound Honey for preaching. It makes the voice clear and pleasant, and takes away all that huskiness in the throat which is so uncom- fortable to preacher and congregation. THE PRIMA DONNA.
