THE CUP WINNERS.
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] [NOW FIRST PUBLISHED. THE CUP WINNERS. By J. HANMER QUAIL, AUTHOR OF "RuTH RAYMOND'S QUEST," "FENTON FRIARS." Ac. SPECIALLY SET FOR THE EVENING EXPRESI. CHAPTER XIV. A PRIZE FOR A CUP WINNER. Farrier Thurstan's practice was an extensive one. Old John Hunter, whom he succeeded. had laid the foundation of what was now one of the best veterinary practices in the North of England. It was so widespread as everyone within a dozen miles of Oakenside knew, Farrier Thurstan took the freshness out of two good horses in going his rounds every week-day. On Sunday he would only use one horse. On taking over the prac- tice he had laid down the rule that whatever business could not be reached by one horse on Sunday should wait, as far as he was con- cerned, until Monday. And as everyone in the district knew how hard he worked on week days and week nights, for both were alike to him, there was a cordial approval of what was called "Farrier Thurstan's wise Sunday rule," by all who did not happen on any particular Sunday to have horse or beast requiring veteri- nary aid. Farrier Thurstan, of Oakenside, was a well- to-do, sharp-tempered, and very independent man. Grace Thurstan, the farrier's only daughter, was a plump, ruddy blonde, with a wealth of golden-brown hair, which at this time was allowed to play freely about her well-cur\cl shoulders. She was not yet eLgh'eon, "d was as vivacious a country girl as could be round anywhere. She knew a little of lausic, bad a strong, though not over sweet, voice, and, in spite of a rather hasty temper. which she had inheritated from her father, was a general favourite in Oakenside. Thoie was lir.rdh' a lad in the place who won:d wt gladly have wooed Grace Thurstan, iml there been tho | slightest chance of any impression being made on her affections or of her father's tolerance I of such a proceeding. But for nearly fifteen months it had been known that any attempt of the kind would be worse than futile. There was one Oakenside lad, and one only, who found any favour in Grace Thurstan's eyes, and that was Ned Ashley. When Farrier Thurstan first heard of Grace's partiality for Ned, he laughed ironi- cally and immoderately. On reaching home the same night, be called Grace into his sur- gery. She ran to greet her father with a face brimming over with smiles. Here, Grace, I want thee," he said, roughly. The girl's countenance fell. She knew by his voice that he was in & dangerous mood. "Yes, father, how are you?" was her prompt answer, as she approached her father with up- turned face, to kiss him. Deftly seizing a curb-strap which hung by a bridle behind the door, Farrier Thurstan grasped his daughter by the left arm and applied the strap to her back with such rapidity and vigour that in a moment the surgery rang with the girl's screams. Oh, father! father! don't, please! Spare me!" she cried, as the strap fell with harsh sound on her shoulders and back. The punishment was of short duration. Grace's screams brought Mrs. Thurstan, pant- ing, into the surgery. Half a glance sufficed to acquaint her with the exact state of affairs. With a cry of Oh, Walter! you brute!" she seized the strap, and husbund and wife stood confronting each other. "Are you mad? What are you doing?" asked Mrs. Thurstan, indignantly. Mad as a wasp. See! That fool thing's been and taken up with that Ned Ashley. That's what's the matter. See—you—wench! If 1 hear another word about it I'll kill you. Do you hear? Ill kill you," stormed Farrier Thurstan, glaring at Grace, who. all misery and tears, was crouching in the corner of the surgery. Such was the first intimation Grace Thur. stan and her mother received that Farrier Tburstan had knowledge of Grace's fancy for Ned Ashley. Twelve months had gone since that scene in the surgery. Farrier Thurstan had heard a good deal about Ned Ashley's regard for his I daughter and Grace's liking for Ned since then, and he had not killed her. Li fact, the subject had become a commonplace of the Thurstan's household, and for some time had been one of ridicule rather than anger on the part of Mr. Thurstan. He had tried to laugh his daughter out of her fancy for Ned, and had dwelt long and fervently upon the miseries which he alleged always followed marriages in which girls like Grace, surrounded by comfort and plenty, joined themselves with poor men like Ned Ashley. In time Grace came to see that her father had rnly one objection to Ned, and that was that his income was not such aa he himself thought fitting for the man who aspired to her hand. When Grace learned that Ned Ashley had joined the Astley Blues at a commencing wage of three pounds per week she went almost frantic with delight. She thought that her father would no longer object to Ned. Threa pounds a week in her eyes was an income be- fitting a prince. After the first wild ebullition of giadness she settled down into a state of happy placidity, determined to seize the first opportunity of acquainting her father with the vast improvement there had been in Ned Ashley's affairs and prospects. She had not long to wait for the wished-for opportunity. Like everyone else in Oakenside. her father was greatly interested in the Associa- tion game, and watched the play of the prin- cipal clubs with intense eagerness. They fur. nished him with an inexhaustible theme of pleasant conversation with the many people he met on his daily rounds. He well knew that, conversationally, he was always safe to play football. Farrier Thurstan had reached home at seven o'clock, hungry as a hunter and chilled by the cutting north-easterly wind which had been blowing since noon. After dining he sat down in his easy chair by the fire, and reached a short pipe from the t -—. filling the pipe leisurely^ mantlepiece. ia the contents of a curious brown jar. whl^ the contents of a heach. Going to a. cupboard unde.TOUn*e p board, she took out iwo pieces of plune S1_ cloth and some balls of coloured silli^e she sat down at tho end of the table an en to wcrk a flower pattsm on one of thean of cloth. They were for a new pair of spes for her father. For ten minutes she be™ silenco over her work. Raising her ? abruptly, Ehe glanced at her father. It was a good match, father, wasn't it?" said, in a voice hardly louder than a whis] Eh! What! Match!" His eyelids rose as ho spoke. The Blues, father; Astley Blues and Northern Reds. It was a good win for the Blues to beat the Reds by three to two, wasn't it I" She was working away with the bright silk. and spoke very slowly in a tone betokening absorption by her task. He know \\hat she was dcing. Though, in a. sudden outburst ot temper, he had often taken the dog-whip or a bridle-strap to her, at heart he loved her dearly, He knew that she was his only daughter, and they were always telling him he ought to be proud of her. Aid. in truth, he was. "Aye. a goad thing that. Beating the Cup- holders. It's something to talk about. The Blues aie doing well, now," he said, warming up under the spell of his favourite theme. Yes. father. It's our men who've done it," ventured Grace. Eh! Our men. How?" It was Charlie Prince, father, who got the second goal, and-and-Ned who g,t the win- ning goal. The Blues have been winning ever Since they our men." He was silent. She dare not look up or she would have seen how his brow contracted at the mention of Ned Asliley's name. Her fingers were plying the silk. What a lot of money it costs," she said, in a minute, seemingly apropos of nothing. "What costs?" Farrier Thurstan asked, sha.rply. Football. Charlie Prince and Ned Ashley are getting three pounds a. week each," and ever so much for travelling and hotel expenses. Just fancy' Three pounds a. week!" Her eyes were still intent upon her work. Not bad wage that for kicking a ball about. sDifferenr. from what they got in the mill," was pgihe jerky response. Grace was in a flutter. The psychological >ment had come. he raised her eyes and looked at her father. le could live on three pounds a week, V' she said, bravely. doi.you could, could you? They-M be smarter 1 u to be if they do." he said. 1 leaning forward, a smile of incredulity playing over his face. She felt piqued and risked his displeasure again. "They will win it; you'll see," she insisted, with an emphatic shake of her head. "Ha! ha! Look here, Grace. If Ned Ashley wins the Cup for the Blues, he wins yon-there will that do?" Ha laughed ironically as he made hot- this grotesque offer. It was meant as a mere sally, satirical and unpremeditated. Grace looked up. Her father saw the heightened colour on her cheeks, and knew that she had taken his words seriously. Oh, thank you. father! Ned will be so glad to hear that. The Bines 11 win the Cup. I'm sure," r,he said, trembling with excitement. His face darkened. Though he had said that if the Blues won the County Cup, Ned Ashley should win his daughter, he had not meant it. He had spoken without thought. Yet he had spoken. He rose from the cliair and walked backwards and forwards in front of the fire. His lips were compressed, and he was evidently dis- pleased with himself. See." he said, stopping abruptly.tand laying his hand on his daughter's shoulder, I've said it. and I'll not run back from my word. But [ never meant it. You've caught me, Grace, youve caught me. But I'll stand to it. It the Bines win the Cup and Ned Ashley keeps himself respectable, he can have you. I'll stand to it." The words lifted Grace into a heaven of antici. patory delight. No thought of possible defeat darkened the sun of hope which had suddenly beamed across her way. No fear lest Ned should scornfully flout such an offer as that tier father had made, sullied the dazzling light which now illumined her life. She was a simple elrl, wth an all-absorbing faith in the man she 8J..r<MtI. 1-ved, and blissfully ignorant of the world's duplicity and hardness. She felt that the great barrier between Xed Ashler and herself was broken down, and that now she had only to acquaint Ned with her father's offer and bide her time. Ere a thought of anything else entered her mind her father left the room. She recollected that she was at work on his slippers, and made an effort to trace a flower on the plum- colcured fabric on her knee. But her fingers refused to move. She was in a love-dream, and could think only of Ned Ashley. Sud- denly. it occurred to her that she ought to write to Ned at once and tell him what her father ha d said. Rising from ber chair, she put her silk snd cloth away. Then, taking a small hand- lamp from the corner cupboard, she lit the lamp, and stole softly up to her own room.
