FOUND SHOT IN THE HEAD. TRAGIC END OF AN INDIAN BREWER. At Sleaford. Sussex, on Monday, Hector Lionel Marsden, an Indian In ewer, and lately belonging to Derbyshire, was found shot in his bedroom. De- ceased and his sister came to Sleaford on Thursday, and the former retired to his rest on Sunday night apparently well. On the room being entered on Monday morning the body was found on the floor, with a revolver wound in the head.

Llandaff Fields THE COMMISSIONERS INSERT RESTRICTXE CONDITIONS. The town-clerk of Cardiff (Mr. J. L. Wheatley) reported to the parks committee on Monday that he had received from the Ecclesias- tical Commissioners the draft agreement for the purchase from them of the Llandaff fields. The commissioners had inserted conditions tying down the corporation not to build on any portion of the fields except the fourteen acres which had been set apart for that purpose. They also put in a clause by which the corporation would be compelled to make the road within three years. He understood that when a. deputation from the corporation arrived at an agreement to purchase the fields there were no prohibitory conditions mentioned. He further understood that the commissioners were to be paid the full value for the land, therefore the corporation should not submit to any re- strictions such as were now proposed. If they did and wanted at some future time to erect baths or a public library, for instance, they would not be able to do so. He proposed, with the sanction of the committee, to strike out the restrictive clauses.—Alderman David Jones stated that in the interviews with the Ecclesias- tical Commissioners there was nothing said about the conditions mentioned. Besides the commissioners got the full value of the land < and the sale ahould. therefore, be an open one. —The Town-clerk was authorised to strike out the restrictive clauses.—The committee refused an application made by the National Telephone Company to fix two poles in the Llandaff Fields.

ALLEGED SACRILEGE. SAID TO HAVE STOLEN THREE- PENNY BITS. George Yatea was remanded at Heywood on Monday on .2. charge of breaking into St. A James's Church, Haywood, and staling the contents of the poor-box and the Sacramental wine. Accused was seen in the locality with- out stockings on, and when arrested he had a. number of threepenny pieces in his possession. Those who had entered the church had no boots or shoes on as the impressions of their feet were left on the chancel steps.

SWANSEA CHILD'S DEATH. THE CORONER'S JURY HAKE SOME REMARKS. A resumed inquest took place on Monday morning on the body of the infant of a woman named Dennis, in which shocking revelations of low life had been made. The jury found that the ohild died from "Natural causes," but that its decease was accelerated by the neglect of the mother. They also desired to add a rider that they were nirprised that a. house should be carried on in such a manner as that in Tontine-street, especially as it was so near the police-etation.

COLLIERY FATALITY. A BLAINA COLLIER BURIED UNDER COAL. John W adman, collier, whilst following his employment at No 1 South Griffin Colliery, Blaina, the property of Messrs. Lancaster and Co., Limited, met with a fatal accident through a fall of coal, at about 6 o'clock on Monday morning. Deceased had been working on Sunday night, and was just finishing when he met with his death. As usual, the colliery sus- pended operations the whole of the day. I

JUMPED FOR THEIR LIVES. BUT THE BOAlT DID NOT SINX. During Sunday night, in a thick fog, the Yarmouth pilot cutter Will o' the Wisp Was i run down near Lowestoft by the Aberdeen steamsr Ardoe. The captain jumped on the steamer and four other pilots jumped into their boat. On the fog lifting the cutter was found to be afloat, but leaking, her starboard aide being cut through. The pilots boarded her again, and, by working the pumps constantly, were able to reach Yaimouth.

KEEP OFF THE GRASS. SHALL THE GREEN SWARD AT THE PARKS BE THROWN OPEN? There is nothing more irritating to visitors to public parks on a hot summer's day than to be reminded that they must not set foot on the fcool green sward. This appears to be the experience of Mr. Henry Jones, one of the members of the Cardiff County Council, who attended a meeting of the parks committee on Monday to aek, amongst other things, that inquiries should be made as to what was done elsewhere At Leicester, where there was a park well-laid out in the centre of a working- ?!ass population, people were allowed to walk m the grass, and the flowers were not damaged. kle thought there must have been a thousand children on the grass, when he visited the park. The slime remark applied to Bournemouth, and to a considerable extent to Kew Gardens. —Mr. Ramsdale reminded the committee of the state of the recreation ground at Roath Park,where there was now soaicely any grass. —It was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Munn, seconded by Mr. Robert Hughes, thai the in- formation aqked for be supplied.

The Treaty of Peace. A DRAFT SUBMITTED TO THE AMBASSADORS. The Terms of which are Unsatisfactory both as Regards the Indemnity and the Demarcation of thé Frontier. A Reuter's telegram from Constantinople on Suiday says:—Tewfik Pacha, presented to the Ambassadors of the Powers yesterday a. draft of a treaty of peace, which not only proposed the Salloindrias Keraghis frontier line, but fixed the war indemnity payable by Greece at £4,500,.)0(), or jB500,000 more than the amount proposed by the Ambassadors. Moreover, the Porte renewed its demand for the abolition of capitulations. This procedure is regarded as affording clear proof that the Ambassadors will effect nothing practical. THE TURKS IN THESSALY. In the House of Commons on Monday Mr. OURZON, in reply to Mr. Herbert Roberts (Denbigh), said in all places in Thewaly where the natives remained the Turkish troops had carefully respected life and property, and were doing their best by equitable administration to encourage the return of the fugitive where the population had fled. Pillage, probably the work of irregulars, had occurred. Her Majesty's Government had no confirmation of the report as to the discovery of the headless bodies of Greek peasants murdered near Larissa as they were gathering their harvest.

Roath Park Lake. » ■ JtEASURES TAKEN TO RE- HOVE THE WJEDS. r More Ken and Another Boat to be Employed, while a Dam i* Suggested to Prvent the Silting. Mr. Henry James, one of the representatives of the Park Ward, attended a meeting of the Cardiff Parks and Open Spaces Committee on Monday to bring before them the present state of the Roath Lake. Mr. James Tucker pre- sided.—Mr. Jones stated thai the weeds in the lake were as thick as ever, and he did not think the proper course was being taken to remove them.—Mr. Pettigrew, the superinten- dent) gardener, reported that the warm weather had caused equatic weeds to grow so rapidly in the shallow parts of the lake as to almost make them unfit for boating. A narrow but clear course had been maintained between the islands and the mainland and as much as possible of the other parts of the lake had been cleared'. The flat-bottomed boat, which ahd been pur- chased for removing eand from the upper part, had been utilised for clearing the weeds, which row caused the greater annoyance. Ten men were engaged last week, but Mr. Pettigrew did not hope to make much headway with the clearance of weeds until they have flowered, after which they will die off.—Mr. Ramsdale said that if the lake was to be any use for boating purposes something must be done, and lie moved that ten more men be engaged on the work.—Alderman avid Jones remarked that it would be necessary to get another boat— Mr. Munn asked if anything could be done to kill the weeds without injuring the fish.—Mr. Pettigrew replied that nothing whatever could be done. The only way of killing the weeds was to concrete the bottom.—Mr. Henry Jones: There were only six men employed there this morning.—Mr. Pettigrew: There were nine this morning; one didn't turn up.— Mr. Henry J ones: Then I can't count. Could not the silting be prevented by a weir further up the stream?—Alderman David Jones said that a dam higher up would be beneficial. Referring to the weeds, he had observed that there was the same difficulty at Llandrindod'. There were men employed there every year clearing the aquatic growth. Mr. Pettigrew states that there was a machine on the same principle as a mowing machine for cutting which the power for working it was generated. The weedB came to the top, and oould then be raked off.—It was eventually resolved, on themotion of Mr. tRamsdale, seconded by Mr. Robert Hughes, mat ten more men be em- ployed and an additional flat-bottomed boat hired pro- temu—On the initiative of Mr. Robinson, the superintendent gardener wae re- quested to make inquiries with regard to the machine which he mentioned.—In reply to Mr. Henry Jones, Mr. Harpur, the borough engi- reer, stated that the construction of dams above the park would to some extent prevent the silting which was now going on in the upper part of the lake.—It was resolved that tickets be issued to botanical students who desired specimens from the gardens, and that two mem- bers of the committee pay a visit to the parks once a fortnight.

FOOTBALL POACHINGS. GLOUCESTER LOSING MORE 01" THEIR PLAYERS. The aggressions of the Northern Union in search of new players have apparently taken a wider field this season, and it is understood that the Midlands and the West of England are being carefully scouted for likely recruits. We understand that two members of the Wigan Club, including one of its vice-presidents, visited Gloucester on Saturday and induced two mem- bers of the local team to proceed to Wigan with them on Sunday evening. These are respectively a centre three-quarter and a wing three-quarter. Negotiations are also understood to be pending with one of the Gloucester forwards.

CARDIFF FAILURES. MEETING OF CREDITORS BCELD TO-DA Mr. Joel Samson Lee, butcher, of 86. Glebe- street, Penarth, having through bad debts, sick- ness, and other unfortunate circumstances to file his petition, a meeting of his creditors was called for Monday at the offices of the Official Receiver (Mr. T. H. Stephens) Cardiff. The statement shows that the liabilities amount to £316, of which only £3 Us. M secured. The assets are estimated to produce £61 12s. 10d., leaving a deficiency of JB257 Ms. lid.—There was no quorum at the meeting, and the estate is left in the hands of the Official Receiver. Mr. James Lewis Smith, of Hamilton-street, has been carrying on business as a furniture dealer and auctioneer at 12. Custom House- street, in the same town. Financial difficulties arose which indjioed him to seek the protection of the bankruptcy court. His liabilities amount to £314 23. lid. and creditors for £11117& 6d. are partly secured. The assets are put down at £144 lOa., leaving a deficiency of £169 12s. The debtor asked for an extension of time in order that he might lodge a proposal for a composition of 10s. in the £ ..—-The meeting was therefore adjourned.

FIGHT ON A PLEASURE STEAMER. < THE COMBATANTS BOLL OVBB. BOARD. ONE DROWNED. An alarming scene occurred on Sunday night on board a Norwich pleasure steamer. A large party of excursionists were returning home, when a dispute arose among some shoe- makers relative to the strike. A man named Harvard and another, whose name is not known, commenced fighting, and though fre- quently separated, finally closed and rolled overboard. The boat was almost capsized by the passengers rushing to the port side, and great alarm and excitement prevailed. Buoys were thrown to the struggling men, and a young fellow jumped overboard to their assistance. Hayward, however, was drowned. His assailant wae rescued, but escaped from the boat and has not yet been apprehended.

DROWNED WHILE BATHING. Whilst bathing in a lake in Reddisher Wood, Holcombe Hill. near Manchester, on Sunday, a labourer, named James Henry Greenwood, aged 21, residing at Bolton-street, Ramsbottom, got out of his depth and was drowned. A com- Iianion, who attempted to rescue him, nearly ost his life.

FATAL FALL OVER A CLIFF. On Sunday afternoon a boy, whilst playing with some companions, fell over Huntcliffe, Saltburu-by-the*S«i, on the rocks below, a distance of 300 feet, and was killed.

t In the Courts. '4 NOTES AND NEWS OF THE SEAMY SIDE. WARMING UP. Interest worked up a little in the Cardiff courts on Monday. The attendance showed a falling off, but the qualities of the ladies and gentlemen who did attend was of superior kind. Each and all were able to introduce some little novelty. In the stipendiary's-court Messrs. Spence and Jotham presided over a brilliant gathering of solicitors and clients, and a tasty reminiscence of the divorce pleased the most captious critic. Only one gentleman found the proceedings dull enough to doze. He was a little man with a plaintive expression and a moustache that seemed as though stuck on as an improvement to a countenance too plaintive for real beauty. And the owner dozed. Cases came and causes went, and he still dozed. Comfortably squeezed into the corner of a police-court pew he dreamt of fairy realms. His vision included angels and sweet perfumed maids performing on the golden harp. His dream embraced the whole of the better land; his soul sped onwards through the happy throng, and played with innocent cherubs in the golden gutters of the New Jerusalem. You could tell that by the sleeper's smile. What were the pleasures of a languishing world to him? What were the terrors of the law to the eyes closed deep in the wrinkles of that dramy smile? If now and a-gain the calm face twitched, and the crimson sign of haosiness closed up again under the gaunt moustache, the dream was only temporarily broken. And when the court concluded and humanity filed out, to home or prison, the daylight ex- Elorer of the better land slept on. He waq the ist man left It was the survival of the fittest. Why should a stern and unromantic law dare to intrude its hoarse voice on the opposite shore of this fair river of life? Police-aergeant Butler looked up from his police-court records, pen in hand. "Hey there!" he shouted; "you can go home and sleep." All the romance fled on that moment. The slumberer grunted gently, and a happier smile curled upwards into the parting of his hair. "You, sir! Go home to sleep!" cried the harsh law, from the lips of Police- sergeant Butler. "Do you hear? Go home to sleep The idea! Using the court of justice for a bedroom!" The slumberer woke. He saw the figure of Mr. Spencer suddenly seated in the throne of his waking Better Land. All else had vanished. "Eh?" he remarked. "Yes, certainly!" "Get out of that," cried Polcoe-sergeant Butler. "Yes, of course," murmured the dreamer sleepily. "You needn't look went on the sergeant, in a roar lite the echoing crash of doom. "This is a court of justice i "Thanks!" said the sleeper, rising with a vacant air. "Go home and sleep I What do you want sleeping here? Haven't you had enough?" He had. An outraged law followed him with stern gaze to the door. The very dust on top of the judicial dais seemed to rise in horror at the sacrilege. In the second court Councillor Henry White set an excellent judicial fashion with an adorn- ment to his starboard buttonhole which at first sight seemed an elegant drumhead-cabbage of oream picked out with sunrise pink. It was a. mammoth rose, with the sweetest of green leaves behind it. The example set was quickly followed by the police-court missionary, with a less enthusiastic floral display, and by a solicitor's clerk or two. With Alderman Jacobs on his right, Coun- cillor White plunged into the troubles of two dainty dressmakers upon the bridge at midnight, and, with this happy beginning, was not the second court even better than the first ? A pathetic incident at the close of the second court stirred the deep sympathies of prisoners and publio alike. Court-officer Alderman.-announced that he would be obliged if any fine-payer to whom he had given half a sovereign change in mistake for a sixpence would return the same in good condition. But convicted ladies and gentlemen are a mean sort, very often. The sorrowing officer looked in vain. Not a sign of the golden sixpence! It was probablv being tendered over the nearest bar as the first and only profit ever made out of the law—and was producing drinks and so forth for a hilarious company. The thought made thirsty police and pressmen raw. Sympathy was unavailing. Regrets are never gilded! Consolation, fresh from the recesses of the inmost soul, is never current coin. That is to say, not of this realm. Ah! AFTERMATH. Mrs. Janetta Rees stepped up into the witness box. Mr. Lewis Morgan, the lady's advocate, got into position to let Mr. Spencer and Mr. Jotham know all about it. Did the court know her husband? No. Well, there might be a thing or two a little reminiscent. Hubby (Mr. Thomas Rees) was the co-respondent in the recently dismissed divorce suit, Williams v. Williams. And Mrs. Williams, the respondent, was the lady at whose door Sirs. Rees laid all her troubles. Janetta Rees was a rather tall, slight lady. She had weathered twenty-five summers of married life. That is to say, most of them were summers, but she spoke of the last three as one long frost. She summoned John on two charges first, for that he "had been guilty of persistent cruelty towards her," and secondly, for that he did "neglect to provide reasonable maintenance for her and her children." Mr. Morgan Rees appeared for the husband, and at the start noted a rather singular item. "I see my client is wrongly summoned," he remarked. "The summons has been taken out in the name of John Rees, whereas her hus- band's name is Thomas Reeø-rather a curious mistake for a wife to make." "Nothing at all in that!" explained Mr. Lewis Morgan; "a mistake of the clerk's—not her's at all." This didn't stop the case, anyhow, for service of the summons had been accepted. "Twenty-five years married. Six ohidren; three still dependent." That was how the wife summoned up her need. "For the last four or five years have you lived very unhappily with your husband?" asked Mr. Lewis Morgan. Y es—very !—Very! I "What â8 your complaint against him?" "He has not brought me means to live. He has struck me, and pulled me by the hair." "This cruelty commenced three yea# ago?" —"Yes." "And three weeks ago you left him?"— "Yes." "Can you give the court some specific instance of ill-usage?" "Yes, I can. The Thursday after I came back from London my husband came to my room in & violent passion—called me a perjurer—held up his boot, and said "Why didn't you go? Hat's all we've been waiting for." He was so violent that I asked him for time to wash, and he went downstairs. I left the house by the baok door. "Why?" "Because I was afraid of him." The lady went on with her story. She had not been on speaking terms with Jonh since July 27 last year. "When living in lamorgan- street," about three years ago he came home one night" she said, "And we had words about a certainp erson—with whom he spent so much of his tmie, and he told me to go there and then." "Who was this person?"—"Mrs. Williams. All our trouble was about her." "Give us another instance." Mrs. Rees thought a. moment. "In Somer- set-street, when we lived there, he brought a Mrs. Williama to the house, and told me to clear out. I put my hat and jacket on and went. They went in front of me. and I caught them up and stepped out into the road, and got m front of them. I kept my eye on bhem-" Mr. Morgan Rees objected. What evidence was this of cruelty? "Surely that is cruelty enough," said Mr. Lewis Morgan, when a man brings another woman to the house, and tells his wife to clear out." In Hereford-street on one occasion, continued the wife, John struck her in the mouth and smashed her lip. In December last he came to her room and told her to get up. She replied that she fent unable to get up and her daughter would attend to him. But she did rise, and he pulled her round the room by the hair. "You have not slept with him for all this tIme 1" "No—when I had the babies they used to be cross in the night, and "Never mind that. Give us another example of your husband's conduct.f' "In April last, in Daisy-street, Mrs. Williams came and knocked a.t the door. My husband was downstairs, and I and my dauglxtero were in bed. My husband answered the door. We knew Mrfs. Williams was in the house, and my daughter Gwen said, 'Mother, we cannot stand thSs,' My husband sent Mrs. Williams out-" Mr. Morgan Rees objected. Surely this was not cruelty—he eent the woman out. (( "Yes—because she spoke," put in the wife. 'Then she smashed the front windows, and stood in the middle of the road abusing me shamefully, and my husband stood by Smith's shed listening to her." So much for the oruelty. Concerning her support Mrs. Rees told the bench that during tiie time her husband wuiD the Inland Revenue Office she had a pound a week, but Isiiloe the 27th of last July, he had not con- tnibuted a. toad of more than JB8. S'he had to go out working daily to support the children. At this point, the wife's case fell through. Mr. Morgan Rees asked two questions, and a spasm of law did the rest. "When did you leave your husband's house?" "On June 30th." "Why d!id you leave?" "Because that was the day the summons wall to be served for him to appear here, and I was afraid of lam, knowing he was about to get the tmmmon8." "Now, your worships," said Mr. Morgan Rees, "I will submit the case must fall through. The gist of the offence ib that the alleged cruelty must have caused the wife to leave and live sparately from her husband. If she does not leave till after the summons is issued, there is clearly no offence." This was a legai knock-out. Mr. Lewis Morgan argued. "Are your worships eure she understood the questions?" he inquired, anxiously. They were sure. Bang! went the thread of the complaint, and both summonses were dismissed without calling on the defence. BRIDGET AT THE HELM. Before Aiuerman Jacobs and MI". Henry White, at Carui. Police-court to-day, Bridget Foley, 33, was charged by Police-constable Wheeler with assisting (in the management of a house of ill-fame at 10, Angelina-street, on the 18th of July.—Prisoner admitted the offence.— She was fined £5 and costs, or one month. HICH KICKING. Mrs. Kate Boyle, is a poor woman, living in one of the poorest parts of the town, but has a deposition whioh is not always found in the higher ciroles of society. Mrs. Boyle lives in Evans's Buildings, and her husband, John, is no beter than her surroundings. The charge against John was that on the 17th, he wounded his wife by kicking her in the lip. The poor woman came into court carrying a baby in her arms, and a nasty-looking out on her upper lip. The following brief dialogue waa all that took plare: The Clerk <to oomplaiimant): Did your husband come home on Saturday nsght the worse for drink?—Mrs. Boyle: Gentlemen, I don't wish to press the charges 'Twas all my own fault. Alderman Jacobs (after consultation- Tt on have%to thank your wife for your liberty. A great lusty fellow, who treats his wife as you have done, deserves heavy punishment. Go home, and make peace, and be very thankful to her.

LLANDAFF. EVADING THE ACT. Benjamin Lawrence and William Edney, of Llandaff Yard, were summoned at the Llan- daff Police-court on Monday charged with giving wrong names and addresses for the pur- pose of obtaining beer on Sunday, Jaly 4, within the three mile limit.—Police-constable Lee said that he visited the Cardiff Castle Inn Tongwynlaig. on the day in question. He saw the two defendants there. He examined the visitors' book and found that they had in- scribed their names thereon as Benj. Lawrence and Frank Welsh respectively, and given their place of abode as Canton. Edney, who had given his name as Welsh, told the constable that he was a marine store dealer, and lived at 17, Halket-street, Canton, but he had since ascertained that he was a boatman of Llandaff Yard.—The Bench inflicted a fine of 20a. or seven days WITHOUT SUPPORT. Mr. Pritchard, relieving officer of the Cardiff Union, applied at Llandaff Police-court on Monday for an order for the removal of two children named Wiggs, now inmates of the Ely Schools to the Toddington Union. The cirsum- stances under which the order was applied for were remarkable. It appears that the mother of th children married a man named Wiggs at Toddington. She subsequently eloped with a man named Walker, and lived with him at Barry. There the children were born. They were deserted and became chargeable, to the Cardiff Union. The man Walker could not be compelled to support the children, neither could Vizi's, but the guardians thought that. as the husband of the woman lived at Toddington, that union should support the o^xdren.—The magis- trates granted the order asked. NEWPORT. FRIGHTENING HER SON. Mrs. Elizabeth Delahay is an elderly matron who appeared at Newport Police-court on a charge of attempting to commit suicide in the canal near the Patent Nut and Bolt Wharf. She was drunk at the time. She plaintively told the magistrates that she only wanted to frighten her son, as she wss vexed with him. "Well, don't frighten him again; fined 5s. retorted the Mayor. CURIOUS ALLEGATIONS. Before the Newport Borough bench on Mon- day John Davies, a carpenter, of Summer-hill, appeared to shbw cause, &c., which was taken uot by a domestic servant Louisa Harvey. It was alleged that intimacy had been forced by means of a loaded revolver in the month of May, 1896, when defendant is said to have pointed the weapon at her head whilst near the Tea gardens, Chepstow. Mr. F. W. Davies appeared for the girl; Mr. T. M. Phillips (instructed by Messrs. Llewellyn and Moore )defended. Considerable doubt existed as to the dates, and the bench, after a long hearing, felt that the case was not made out. SWANSEA. A HEAVY PENALTY. Mary Ann Davies was fined JB25 by the Swansea magistrates on Monday for keeping a disorderly house at 68, Lower Oxford-street. A STABBING CASE. James Henderson, a black, was committed for trial by the Swansea magistrates on Monday morning on a charge of attacking a man named Rees in a Strand lodging-house and stabbing him in the throat. r

Engineers' Strike NON-UNIONISTS CALLED UPON TO RETURN TO WORK." The Engineers' National Free Labour Asso- ciation has issued a manifesto earnestly calling upon sill non-Union workmen employed in the engineering and allied trades to return to their work, and refuse to be any longer the catspaws of unscrupulous and self-seeking Trades Union agitators, who, it states, live and fatten on the misery of the working olasses and the dislocation of the national trade. ElbHT HOURS DAY CONCEDED BY MANY LONDON FIRMS. It was represented on Monday that 174- London firms had conceded the eight hours day. Mr. John Burns, M.P., has been asked by the Amalgamated Society of Engineers to address a number of meetings. The July holiday at Belfast on Saturday, and the engineering factories opened on Monday All hands re- turned as usual to Harland and WolfTs works, whioh have as yet taken no part in the dispute. The engineers in inns which posted notices did not return to work.

A BOY'S BRAVERY. DIES TRYYNG TO RBSCVB BIS FRIEND. Two boys were drowned in the Tay at Dun- dee on Monday afternoon under distressing cir- cumstances. James Young, aged ten, of Dun- dee. and a lad named Gordon, who was an an excursion from Glasgow, went to the river to bathe. Young accidentally fell in, and was being carried beyond his depth when Gordon plunged in to rescue him. Deal Carriers' Strike. STEVEDORES RETURN TO WORK THIS AFTERNOON Upon the Masters Agreeing to Pay the Wages that were Received by the Men Two Years Ago. Up to Monday morning there was practi- cally no change in the position of affairs re- garding the deal carriers' strike at Cardiff. About 40 free labourers arrived in the town parly in the day, and were taken to the Roath Dock, and put to work on the vessels awaiting their discharge. The strikers spent most of the day at the York Hotel Club-room, where they passed the time by holding a "smoker." In the afternoon, however, a step was taken which is likely to have the effect of bringing about an early settlement of the dispute. Several of the master stevedores intimated to Mr. Harry Orbell, who is acting on behalf of the ir-en, that they were prepared to grant the de- mands of the stevedores. These demands were a return to the rate of pay which the men re- ceived two years ago., viz., Is. lOd. per stan- dard, an increase of 4d. and 6d. an hour over- time i-ntil ten p.m., and after ten p.m. 5a per night per man, in addition to the standard. Upon receiving the intimation, Mr. Orbell at onoe drew up agreements, and some of the master stevedores attended and signed, where- upon over 100 men immediately resumed work, two ships being worked for Mr. Fletcher and two for Mr. Taylor. Other master stevedores were unable to be present to sign, but it is expected that they will do so during this even- ing, *and in that case further men will start work to-morrow morning. Of course, this only applies to the contractors' men, but a totally different complexion ia put upon the dspute between the merchants and the deal carriers. The free labourers, i.e., the imported men, will probably be put to work on the vessels, and, as there wll thus be a. large increase in the number of available hands, but lttle delay or dffioulty is anticipated. The strikers, however, regard the step taken by the stevedores as favourable to their chanoes. They contend that the imported men are not capable work- men, and if this is 80, the stevtdores, who are on piecework, will naturally refuse to work with them. In that case, the owners would be absolved from blame. and the shps would no longer be protected strike clauses, inasmuch as the master stevedodes were prepared to do the work contracted for by the owntrs, the Federation is only responsible.

Barry Navvies Strike. TERMINATION OF THE MASTERS LOCK-OUT NOTICES. The deadlock a.t the New Dock, Barry, continues, and the position of affaire up WI oi>e Molook on Monday was unaltered. The lock-out, on the part of the employers ter- minated on Monday morning, but, notwith- standing thes trong efforts made by Messrs. Price and Wills, the contractors, to induce the men to resume work they have not done 80, and, marshalled by Mr. John Ward, the general secretary of the Navvies Union, all important secessions were prevented, though one or two engine-drivers have gone on to work one looomotive. As previously stated, a special police force has been drafted into the town, under the personal supervision of Captain Lindsay, ohief constable, assisted by Superintendents Giddings, Barry Dork, and Jennings, Bridgend; and Inspectors J. Williams, Barry Dock, and Canton, Merthyr.

DIED AT PRAYER. An old woman, named Foster, was kneeling to pray in a Sunderland Mission Chapel on Sunday evening, when she fell forward and expired.

A BARONET'S FAILURE. The creditors of Sir William Vavasour at Londbn Banldruptcy-court on Monday, decided to leaive the estate in the hands of the Official Receiver. The full secured debts amount to £99,000, and there are unsecured debts of £6,000. Sir- William declares the estate is sufficient to pay the claims in full.

CORPORATION EMPLOTES' PICNIC. On Saturday last, in ideal pic-nio weather, the employes of the public works department of the Cardiff Corporation held ther annual outing, the destination being Wells. Leaving the Pier-head by the steamship Scotia shortly after eight a.m., the party, which numbered 70, proceeded to Bumbim, which was reached at 9.30. Breaks were here in readiness at the quay, and the party ai once journeyed to Wells. The eighteen mile drive to the old cathedral city. was greatly appreciated, the scenery en route being exceedingly picturesque. Arrived at Wells, a repast was provided at the Star Hotel by the hostess (Mrs. Cox), at the close of which the healths of the publio works committee, borough engineer, deputy borough engineer, and hon. secretary were drunk with musical honours. The party then visited the cathedral, and found amusements in various other ways until five p.m., when a start was made for Burnham, where, after a few hours' promenading on the beach and about the town, they re-embarked on the Scotia, returning to Cardiff shortly after midnight. Great credit is due to the hon. secretary (Mr. D. F. Thorne, of the borough engineer's staff), for the suc- cess of the tri~ whinh was acknowledged to be one of the most enjoyable spent in connec- tion with the department.

AN BIGHT HOURS DAY. A Reuter's telegram from St Petersburg on Monday says: —The prefect of the city has issued an order ixing a legal eight hours day for young people of both sexes from twelve to fifteen years old employed in dressmaking, millinery, or tailoring establishments. It is also enacted that these employes shall never be required to work for more than four consecutive hours at a stretch, and that nightwork shall in their case be wholly prohibited.

A COOL BURGLAR. At Leamington on Monday James Stewart. painter, of Glasgow, was committed for trial on a charge of housebreaking. Prisoner, it is alleged, entered a villa during the absence of the family at Hastings, drank a quantity of whisky, and retired to bed in the best room, where he was arrested. In prisoner's possession was a certificate showing he was once a Glasgow Freemason.

DBATH PRESUMED. In the Probate Division on Monday applica- tion was made for leave to presume the death of Henry Willott, formerly a shovel manu- facturer, Sheffield. It was stated that deceased disappeared from Sheffield in 1886, and the last trace of him was that he was in an institution in New York. No trace could now be discovered. Leave was given to presume death since 1891.

The Queen's Prize. CHIEF EVENT OF THE BISLEY MEETING STARTS TO-DAY. The Entries are in Excess of any Previous Year and Include Hany Colonials. BISLEY. 9.0 a.m. Shooting for her Majesty the Queen's prize, which is the chief event of the meeting, will be commenced at 9.20 this morning. The first stage consists of seven shots at 200, 500, and 600 yards, but only the first two ranges will be concluded to-day. The entries are in excess of any previous year, and include no fewer than 98 ColoniaJs. The weather this morning is again favourable to shooting. A slight easterly wind is blowing, and the light is gcod and steady. A large number of Volunteers came into camp by the early morning trains in order to take part in the competition. There is no other event of any importance to-day. BISLEY, 10.30. A SCOTSMAN LEADING. Shooting for the Queen's Prize at the first range (200 yards) is proceeding steadily. The wind is now blowing across the ranges, and is rather gusty. Private A. B. A later telegram says:—Sad news has just reached camp that last night a Volunteer officer, the ReT. Sackville Berkeley, chaplain of the 3rd Devon Corps, died at Aldershot from heat apoplexy. The deceased officer was found lying unconscious on his bed, and all efforts to restore him were unavailing. The 3rd Devon Corps are indulging in their annual week's training at Auierohot. THE LEE-METFORD RIFLE. 1 p.m. The superiority of the Lee-Metford rifle over the Martini-Henry, which it has superseded, was completely demonstrated this morning. It used to be rare for the highest possibles to be put on at 200 yards range of the Queen's, owing to the kneeling position being compul- sory. but to-day no less than five have been recorded. Private Tilbury, of the London Irish, was the last to obtain 35. There has been high scoring throughout the first range, which has just concluded, and, as the conditions are all that could be desired, it is probable that there will be still more records broken when the next rajige (500 yeards) is shot for this after- noon.

LADY JESSICA SYKES CHARGED WITH OBTAINING VALUABLES BY FRAUD. At Marlborough-street Police-court on Monday Lady Jessi-ca. Sykes, of Grosvenor- sueet, was summoned by Herbert Sanguinetti, Old Bond-street, for having unlawfully and knowingly by means of false pretences obtained certain valuable securities, to wit, bankew cheques of the value of JB5,300 and JB200 respectively, and also for converting two hundred Randfontein shares, of which she was bailee, to her own use. No Evidence was taken, it being arranged the case should be heard a fortnight hence.

ASTONISHING IGNORANCE. At Aston on Friday Austin Pywell, Short Heath. Erdington. was summoned for assault- ing a lad named Thomas HassalL The com- plainant and another lad made a bonfire on defendant's premises, and Pywell caught Hassail and struck him in the face.-The magis- trates considered that the defendant had re- ceived great provocation, and the charge was dismissed on payment of the costs.—During the hearing of the case the prosecutor exhibited the most astonishing ignorance. When about to be sworn he informed the clerk that he was nine years of age, attended the Erdington Catholic Schools, and was in Standard IL He did not know what a Testament was, had never heard of the Bible, or the Virgin Mary. Asked if he had heard of God, he replied, "No. but I know something about geography." When asked if he was taught to speak the truth, the lad said, "Oh! ah I I can tell the truth."

WIDOW'S BREACH OF PROMISE. At Bristol Assizes (before Justice Day) on Saturday Hannah Pitfield Nelson, the widow of the chief steward of a steamer lost in 1889, brought an action for breach of promise of marriage against Robert Henry Crothorne, shipping clerk. She became licensee of a public-house, where defendant visited her since 1892. Two years later a child was thorn. He had promised to marry her. but she obtained an affiliation order for £1 per month. She admitted having won a previous action for breach of promise, but denied threatening to expose the defen- dant.-A verdict was given for the defendant.

The "Morning Post" says:—The publica- tion in New York of Mr. Sherman's dispatch of the 10 of May to the American Ambassa- dor haa caused some discussion on both sides of the Atlantic. A CRUISER PAID OFF. The first-class cruiser Theseus (Captain Her. bert Onslow) was paid off at Chatham on Mon- day. She was commissioned in 1896 upon the formation of the flying squadron, and was subsequently temporarily attached to the Cape of Good Hope Station.

At Cork City Assises, on Saturday. James Crossland, of St. Ann's Well-road, Nottingham, was convicted of receiving butter and heofm under false pretences from Cork merchants. The Superintendent of the Nottingham Police said he had known the prisoner for seventeen years, that he was not what he presented him- self to be, md was an associate of thieves. Fourteen previous convictions were proved, commencing in 1876. The judge now sentenced him to three years' penal servitude. On Sunday afternoon Walter Merchant, aged 15, of 27. Maria-street, Cardiff, was playing with a toy revolver when it exploded, and he was severely burned about the faoe and hands. He was taken to the infirmary, where he was

An inquest was held at Marylebone on Satur- day morning on the remains of Sidney Augus- tine Tower, a professional singer.—Ada Tower, the widow, said deceased had bad a aeries of dis- appointments, which had caused him to be greatly depressed. She-went out to fulfil an I engagement, and on her return found him dead on the sofa with a carbolic acid bottle by his side. The following note was on the table:- "My darling Wife,—Good bye, and God bless you and the dear children. You will do so much better without me.
