UR SHORT STORY
=-=- ?- UR SHORT STORY _0.. All. I) LANG SYNE. "How od things come about," Mrs. Mar- shall said, ming into the room where her iister and daughters were busily engaged iI, the raaacture of two elaborate evening Oresses. "A deep I philosophical remark, mamma," said May Iishall, looking up rather saucily. "Pray whaccasioned it?" "You we know anything about it," was the reply, at your Aunt Effie will." Mies EfBelwyn looked up in her turn, twisting, she did so, bright blue ribbon into a tastcnot. "Mrs Mgomery has just called," said MM. Marti, "and tells me her brother Harold wüe home in time for Mrs. Grant's party." The knof blue satin ribbon was suddenly crushed oni aJ11 shape iby the quick, convul- sive grasp Miss Effie Selwyn's fingers, while about tliatiy's lips gathered a whiteness and moi*t'thait threatened a fainting fit, "I nev&new Mrs. Montgomery had a brother." "Probatnot," aaid Mrs. Marshall. "He iaas been lihina. foi How many years is I a, Effie?' "Twelv* For hery life Effie could not have spoken more thatie word with composure. nried May. "No wonder you thinbrrie and I know nothing about Wm. Heini be aa old as his sitter." "Let me see; he was about twenty-three when he went away," said Mrs. Marshall musingly. "He is not more than 35. That is still young for a mac." She looked as she spoke at her pretty blooming girls of eighteen and twenty, and vaguely called to her mind the stories she had heard of the large fortune Harold Russell had gathered to- gether during his exile. Mrs. Grant's party was to be iam event in the quiet little town of Heydoh. The Misses Marshall, brightest of blondes, were to appear at the coming festival in clouds of white tulle with blue trimmings. Miss Selwyn had also been bidden to the party, but "Annt Effie never went anywhere," the girls said, so there was no dress preparing for her adornment. As her needle went in and out, through cloudy tulle and lustrous satin, Effie Selwyn thought: "Coming home! Home to what? Oh, the bitter folly of the past! May and Carrie are now as light-hearted and gay as I was when I Huold Russell and I clasped hands with a promise to be all and all each to the other. Only cne little week of happiness, and he left me. How long wis it? A year, two years, before I knew that he "thought me false to him, never guessing that it was Kate's betrothed husband he sa.w me greet so warmly, when I never guessed he was near. A brother's caress and kis* worked all the misery." Tho eventful evenmg came at last, and the I sririo were shut uu in their room untwisting wonderful crimps, and otherwise preparing for conquest. In her own room, with the door securely fastened, FCffie Selwyn was, she said in her own heart, making a goose of herself. "I am but a faded old maid, after all." Was she? Her thirty years of peaceful life, tho only one heart struggle, had left her face as smooth as in girlhood. Blooming e, !bad never been, her '.val face having a soft, creamy complexion that was seldom flushed with colour, though its exquisite fairness was never pallor. "Considering it is twelve years since I wore this dress and flowers, I do nott look so very antiquated. A train is always ta. train, and I suppose the overskirt modernises it," thought Effie. Then she went to a box hidden away in her bureau drawer, and from its most secret corner she took a ring, wrapped carefully in soft cotton. "Dare I," she whispered, turning it round under the gaslight, and showing the device, an enamelled violet, with a. flashing diamond for its heart- Will he despise me if I put it on ?" ehe thought. Will lie think I am too eaisily won back again? Should I despise the hasty judg- ment that' led him to condemn me unheard, twelve long, long years ago?" She hesitated some moments, then put the ring upon the fore-finger of her left hand, turning it so that the violet was hidden, and only a plain gold band soemed added to her other rings. Voices in the hall i-oused her from a dreamy reverie over the diamond-hearted violet, hidden so long in her jewel box, a.nd she left her room, to meet the aanazfci comments of her sister and nieces, I ( .?- "Effie! are you going? Girls, your aunt is going!" Splendid!" cried the girls, in duet. "Oh!" cried Carrie, "you magnificent auntie! You will throw aill 't)he girls into the shade. What a superb silk! and you in full dress!" she continued, with more enthusiasm than grammatical precision. "Where did you dig up that violet silk?" asked M're. Marshall. "I thought its glories had departed years ago. Do you remember the evening you wore it, when papa gave Kate her first party?" I remember," Effie said, in a low voice- "And James did not come till everybody was going, on account of the train being delayed. We older ones were half angry that Kate was actually engaged before she was even intro- duced into society. How we laughed because James met you first, and gave you such a rap- turous brotherly embrace. Heigh-ho! We are getting old folks now, Effie." Mammae" cried May, "Aunt Effie is not so old as you are?" "Not by ten years," said Mrs. Marshall; "but we seem nearer of an age than we look." The evening was half gone, and Effie had only seen at a distance the tell figure and hamd- some face of the hero of the evening. As the brother of the popular Mrs. Montgomery, as a reputed millionaire, as one who had been twelve years in Oliina, Mr. Harold Russell was forced to submit to being lionised. He was I much altered, Effie thought; contrasting the dignified bearing and grave face with the sunny- faoed, impulsive young man who had been her lover in past years. Yet, as the hours flew oy, she caught herself recognising certain expres- sions of the dark eyes, the mobile mouth, certain t inflection* gf the deep, mwoly voioe; once her heart beat tumultuously, as a familiar laugh rang our upon the air. It wa<? by her own movement that she pre- vented the recogmition she dreaded, while she longed to have it over. More than once bhe had screened herself from a tall figure approach- ing the place where she stood, and more than once the violet silk had flitted into another room just as Harold Russell thought he could touch it. There had been much dancing, much flirting, and many games of whist, when a small party of music lovers had collected round the grand piano, begging Miss Selwyn to sing. It was well known that she had a splendid voice care- fully educated, and she so seldom appeared in society that there was no eeoape now from the pressing importunities of her friends. "Just one song, Miss Selwyn," Mrs. Grant herself entreated. "There are so many anxiou^ to hear you." Very reluctantly the lady drew off her white gloves and seated herself before the piano. The group around her listened for the usual brilliant prelude, and an elaborate and difficult "show off" €<mg, but after a moment of silence the little hands struck two rich, full chords. A moment she paused to steady the trembling heart; then, in a clear, sweet voice, she sang the opening verse of "Auld Lang Syne." The listeners were surprised for a second, then touched by the power and sweetness of the voice singing the old song familiar to all. The second- verse waa sung, when, close beside the singer, a deep baes voice joined in the chorus. Quick crimson flushes passed over Effie's cheek, but she sang steadily, at every chorus the voice ehe knew so well ioinmg ber own. I. Nobody else noticed it, but with each verse these voices, so long estranged, grew stronger, clearer, more jubilant, till with the last one the spirit seized them all. and a deafening chorus of the company closed the song. They drifted away, Ittroke up into couples and groups, while Harold Russell, affecting to turn over some music, said, in a low voice: "Can we indeed be as in Auld Lang Sync, Effie? Can you forgive me?" For answer she slowly turned the ring upon her finger until dhe recognised the device he had chosen for her twelve years ago. "Mamma," May Marshall whispsred, "do you see Aunt Effie dancing with Mr. Russell? I do not see one young couple so handsome and distinguished looking as they are." A sudden memory flashed over Mrs. Marshall. "The last time Effie wore that violet silk," she thought, "she danced with Harold Russell, and the next thing we heard of him he was on his way to China. I remember now, Effie soon after began to withdraw from society. I wonder-" Here her meditations were interrupted by the people in question. "Mrs. Marshall," th/e gentleman said, "ha,'oè you no welcome for me? I ask for one as a 'man and a brother. "You shall have it, though Effie has told me I nothing in your absence." I "There was nothing to tell. We have only to-night renewed the—the "The vows," mid the ^eaitleman gayly, "of Auld Lang Syne."
