OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY A FORTUNE TOLD. A »pr5ngf sun, with earl*" flowers, and a sky jvertaead like the deey blue of a Delft plate, way be very attractive to one attuned to the loveliness of Nature, but ia 4. young man with t wealth of love in his heart and a lack of -eady-money in hie pocket ihe beauty of the toene, so out of accord with his feelings, comes with a sensation that jara. ? He bad been i rolving tibe situation in his mind, had cuefully considered every point of the question, and the outtlook was anything but encouraging. The letter that he held in his hand demanded an immediate reply. It was a s'hort business note from a firm in a distant oity, offering him a position at a very bin all increase of salary. Ordinarily, he would have despatched the matter after scarcely a moment'e deliebration. To accept the offer would mean no appreciable rise in the world, and it would eever certain cherished associa- tions. But that was just the thing. Was it net the part of wisdom to put distance between him and an object that wae unattainable? To see the womar he loved, to b6 brought into almost daily contact with her beauty and her thousand charms, wa* simply to tive in a fool's paradise. To know that other mon woooo her, laid their hearts' secrete before her, and, at leaat, stood a chance of winning her, was maddening to him whose liPP were sealed. How could he ask her to share Iim 1«*? Oh, the bitter irony of it! What had ha to offer her but a heart overflowing with And could not either men give her that, and wealth besides ? lie thought of her willowy, grace, of her little white hands. Shielded: fitom poverty and I the sordid side of life, her spirit had grown straight and free as a fresh young flower. How unsuited she was to endure privation! Could he ask her to give up all that she had been accustomed to, amd endure hardships for his sake? In imagination he could almost see her dear face losing that look of careless happiness, growing serious day by day with the care of life, with anxiety about unwonted details. He had heard that love glorified all things, but was it not selfishness even to think of winning her heart? Perhaps, if he went away, in years to come he might learn to think of her as only a gracious memory. But why torture ihimself with thoughts of the future ? As for the present, his mind was made Hp. He had' written his letter accepting the position offered him, and his preparations for departure were concluded. There was nothing left for him to do but to bid some of bis friends giood-bye. He wa auehered into the little studio, where she ejected to paint when it suited her fancy, bat oftener to reoeive her "guests of honour," as she called them. This mark of her favour had been vouchsafed to him before, but there were obikers, he knew, who enjoyed the same privilege. She was sitting near the bay window, her hande otasped loosely in her lap, Red in her eyes a dreamy expression which shewed that her thoughts were far away. She rose when she saw him, and came forward to meet him. ''t.['m glad you have come, she said. "I think I 'WM about ta ei-Te way to one of my ? moods. I don't like moody people. Do yoa?" He looked at her. Could she not guess that, whatever phase of her character night be turned to him, he loved her always ? But they were treading on dangerous ground. If he would leave her with his secret still his own, he must turn the conversation into other chan- nels but when he proceeded to do it, it was with a half-heartedness that was very apparent. He told her that he was about to go away, that he probably would not return for many years; and he tried to speak lightly of the many changes that might occur before they would meet agaii, Was it imagination that m'vido hire think she paled slightly a:t his words ? "Perhaps you wtill be married then," he said. "Won't you promise to send me < ne of your wedding cards?" She did not seem to be listening to him. Is not this a sudden determination?" she asked. "Why are you going?" She had turned her face away, and he could not catch the expression that had suddenly stolen over it. Tliere are many reasons," he said. I doubt if you would be interested in a recital of tbean1. I am afraid I am growing egoti/ir.ioai. Let us talk of something else." And this they attempted to do, but the conversation flagged perceptibly. He found it hard to choose sub- jects, for his heart invariaibly turned to the thought—the one he could not put into words. She, too, was unusually silent. At length he grew desperate. This waa his last evening with her, and he dreaded to think of the im- pression he would leave behind. He felt that he must say something, anything. His eyes I .?. fell on a paok of ifirds that lay on a table near her. "Why, I do Relieve," he said, laughing, "that you were playing solitaire before I came in. You must have been very much bored, I think, to seek aroraeement in that g-ame-of all games the most stupid "That is your conclusion," she replied. "I was not playing solitaire. I can explain the presence of those cards by telling you that I was trying my i.iortune. When you appeared in the doorway I had just discovered the pleasiTif fact thai I had 'a. friend, a foe, and a journey to go." It's really a most edifying way of s/pendi ocg the time. Instead of being bored in the present, I delve into the treasures of tbhe future." He haiwJed fcTie pack to her. "Tell me my future," he wad. I am going away. 1 should like to know -t irhat is before me." She smiled. "I half believe you are sceptical. It wonder if I can convince you of the wonderful truths that lie hidden here!" She tdrew ciut a king of hearts as she spoke. "You are i Ð love," &be said. Her eyes met his for one moment, then a wave of colour swept up tjo her brow. He leant forward eagerly. "Yes," he said, "that is true;" and his voice was litusky. She waa ddly turning the cards over in her hands, one after another. "You love a woman strongly, tcmderly as a man may love, and yet you wil nob tell he so. I can read pride here, and this it tn that keeps you from it!" She paused, but he besought her to go on. "Tell IDt) of her!" he begged. "Is she fair or dark?" Her facet was balf in shadow. "She bae fair hair," she said. "Like a wealth of gold," he broke in (impetuously. "And her eyes?" "They are brown," she replied, so softly that he had to bend forward to catch her words. "Glorious eyes," he whispered—"brown with all the lights or autumn sun! But tell me that which I wish most to know. Does she love me?" A soft breath of spring flowers stole in through the window. The cards fell in con- fussion to the floor, as his hands closed upon hers. Her eyes had answered him, and the fortune was told. (The End.)

THE IRONCLAD MOTOR,
THE IRONCLAD MOTOR, The latest development of the motor-car idea is that of an irrmolad vehicle to be used for sccuting and skirmishing along ordinary roads in time of war. A specimen has been sub- mitted to keen test by the War Office authori- ties, and it is said that it has proved satis- factory Meanwhile considerable secrecy is being maintained as to its internal details. The newest ironclad is driven by a 16-h.p. hot-air motor, and cairies two Maxim guns, four men, and 5,000 rounds of ammunition. When called upon, tfxese guns can fire 700 &hots a minute. The marksman has only to sight the gun and blaze awav, since in place of the crank being turned by hand, as in the ordinary machine gun, the mctor does the work both faster and better, while the speed of firing can be regu- lated from 50 to 700 rounds per minute. The armour covering the men and the machine is of regulation bullet-proof thickness: in f..ct, ex- periments ha.ve demonstrated that it will stand light artillery fire, though to make the safety of die men even greater they, while firing, are protected by casements. The two men not actually engaged in regulating and sighting the guns find shelter below the armour belt, and when only one gun Is in action the remaini-ag gunner also retires behind the Harveyised steel plating of the machine's armour belt. In tests over ordinary roads this autocar, with two guns, equipments, ammunition, and foui men, has been safely driven at an average speed of 25 miles a.n hour.

?- THE KING OF THE TIGHT- ROPE. One glimpse of the King of the Air," Knight of the Fearless Foot," The Hempen Monarch," The King of the High Raps," "Lord of the Hempen Realm." "Prince of Acrobats," "Hero of Niagara," "Emperor of all Manila," &c., as Blondin has been variously described by the reporters of the world. It was a bitterly cold night, and I was waiting for him in the room allotted to him when he was performing at the Agricul- tural hall, London. He was on the rope. In iio came from the perfor- mance, simply dripping with perspira- tion. No word was spokem. An {■.ttendact first attacked him. and pulled the clothes right off him,, another had meanwhile begun to towel him then they both towelled him. eind as they did so he., too, got a towel with which he kept rubbing his faoe, head, and neck. Thf-n he began to speak—"Bicycle no good to-night; too much feg up there; no rope to see." After that conversation became general. Blondin fed a good drink from a seltKei- svphon. Food prepared by his ova c.o0k at home followed; and lit-tle later he lav down on a couch, wae warmly covered, and fell a*leen. In two hours he had to per- form again, then drove home, a distance of a dozen miles, in the cold. That very evening wc- wert. sppakiner of his advancing age. and pfirrpfine remarked that he would soon n<lvø to think of giving- up hie daring flight*. I shall never forget b's answer—" Ions' I can per- fcrm. I perform. That my health!"

---RED EYES ARE NOT BECOMING.
RED EYES ARE NOT BECOMING. J., may read very well in a book, but it is only the woman who pretends to cry who can really look nice with it! She must learn to stop herself in time or she will get inflamed features, red eyes, and (worse still) red nose, or put her face all out of drawing. Neither does the modern woman sit down and weep I over her grievances—she is more likely to be up and doing to redress them. Charles I Kingly is in a manner responsible for the mcdern reaction, for when once he laid it down Tr plainly that men must work and women must weep, this set them all up and doing to protest agaw'Ft such a division of labour. The new woman will not sit down and weep when there is anything to be done; she will steadily belter her condition and inaeter the world by more straightforward means than simulated tears. Possibly crying will gc out of fashion altogether, amd the future New Zealand woman will ponder curiously when she goes through an ancient museum and finds a lachrymatory C'Oi'ip.ining a specimen of the tears which women used to shed in their uaiemaxicipated days. -?._?-?-

ENGLISH GIRLS AND AMERICAN.
ENGLISH GIRLS AND AMERICAN. O^e of the leading New York papers has been instituting » comparison between the accom- plishments of the English and the American girl-much. of course, to the advantage of the latter. English, girls, we are told, an exube- rant with health, vitality, and physical vigour, due i" the main to their outdoor life and fond. ness for exercise. But it oannot be said that they shine i" Way particular, eave in riding and a* lawn tennis. Their conversation is dull and uninteresting, and when once one attempts to broach any subject of general interest outside the narrow circle whk& constitutes their own particular world, and beyond which they never, look, they are hopelessly at sea, and likely to regard their oompa.nion as either » freak or a quiz,' whose object if to make them look foolis'i." This is news indeed. But how diKcent it is with the American girls, we are asked to believe. Af a class. they are supe- rior in brilliancy and in intellectual equipment" to those on this side. The average American girl knows all aibout Europe, and without a moment's hesitation could rattle off the n-iiiwo of the various rulers of the Old World. But it -,vould be difficultto find one gentlewoman in » hundred in England who is 3pquainted with the identity of the Pi-evident of the United fM-atfvc who has the fa<int«ist conception of the d's'-inction between the two great national rvtrties here, or wl-o does Wit imagine tha* Boston i« ou ly a few hours' distance from New Orleans." What an ignor*nt class our English I pris must be! ?. ? ?,
