OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY A KNIGHT IN ARMOUR. ?. ^r. Oaldftrwood and Squire Horsdale had friends in their youth. Then their Pai,hs had lain apart: the one seeking his for- Une in Amertica, where he had died penniless, saving fug only son Oscar to fight his way in w»rld ae best he oould; the other sucoeed- by the death of the heirs direct to the estate ? Horsdale, where he had been living for the two years. One of the squire's first acts °n himself raised from comparative Poverl to affluence had been to seek out the °W friend, and Oscar had thankfully ^oepted the post of steward on an estate ad- Horsdale. Poor squire, he had not ^SMaed for what was to follow! The squire was away in quest of a hunter up to his weight -not an easy thing to findn-and had taken the head coaohman with him to assist at the pur- chase. The butler was down with rheumatism and could not stir from bed; the groom had begged leave to go home tc a dying father; the gardeners and stable helps had gone home for the nisyht. There was simply not a man avail- able about the place, and the unfortunate womenfolk had just discovered that a burglary had been planned to take place in the early part of that very night, it having come to the know- ledge of the thieves that the house was unpro- tected by the usual male contingent. The dis- covery had been made by the younger Miss Horsdale—Trix—wiho had luckily overheard the men talking in the shrubbery just before Oscar's arrival, and, herself unseen, waited till they had crept away. By that time she had ascertained that they intended to get in at a certain window in the hall, from whence they would proceed to the plate-room upstairs. Evidently, whoever had planned the robbery was well acquainted with the ways of the house, I a.nd the necessity to get the job over early, so as to be clear away from the neighbourhood 'I before daybreak. -Madge declared her suspi- cions that the oase of sudden illness to which the groom had been summoned was a polite I fiction, and that it wap he who wr-c at the bot- torn of u- Horsdale Hall lay too far back from the load for assistanoe to be easily summoned, even if any-one was likely to be passing so late in that lonely part of the country, so Oscar felt that with this household of women depending on him for assistance discretion would assuredly be the better part of valour, and he muat be cautious in planning the means of defence. "The thing will be to frighten them off before they can get upstairs," he said. "I never go about without a revolver, so if they attempt to fire they will find me ready for them." "Madge is a shot," broke in Trix. "Are you?" Oscar said, in surprise, turning to the elder girl. whose delicate, slender beauty made the assertion difficult to believe. "Well, I hope to-night, at any rate, your skill will not be out to the test. Luckily I know from what quarter to expect the enemy's attack, so can ohoose my position." "But you shall not watch alone," said Madge. "I really am a good shot, and though"—with a lit-ble shudder—"I would not kill anybody for the world, if I a.im low I could not injure them very much, could I ?" He laughed. "I think you might venture that with a clear conscience. Mrs. Varney, will you mind warn- ing the servants of what may happen, and tell them to keep out of the way upstairs? There is not a moment to lose, for it will never dn if those fellows get here ibefore we are ready for them." "I wish I could shoot." Trix swd, when, she had! helped Oscar to pnlb out the lam/pe, Madge having gosie in search of a revolver. "Never mind," he aaid, consolingly, M he followed her into the hall. "Your quick ears will be of t-ho greatest use, for you can warn us from the landing above the moment you hear the slightest sound. Now, where will be the best place to Mnd f" glancing round the i niw KiUit. "kioh looked weird and unfamiliar by the dim light of the lamp that he held aloft. > "How would it do to get inside one of those suits off armour?" came Mage's voice from the darkness above. Oscar looked up and saw her standing on the topmost stair, surveying the scene below. She had thrown a oloak over her white dress, and carried a dark lantern in her band- "A capital idea," he said, "but I shfcll tare to ask you two to help me equip myself for the fray." ';1 know how it goes," said Madge. "I dressed father up in it for some tableaux we had last Christmas." She put down the lantern, and with Trix's help buckled1 on piece after piece till he stctod fully equipped. Her fingers trembled 3« she put the sword in his hand. "Oh! if you should be hurt," she whispered (Trix had gone to take up her post of sentinel), "I should never forgive myself." "My darling, have no fear," ha whispered back, putting his steel-clad arm round her slight form. "I would gladly give my life for yours. Surely you know that. Give me the right to protect you always. I will work day and night to make a heme worthy of you, if ouly you will give IDA one little word of hope if-" "I hear footsteps," called Trix softly, un- suspicious of the interesting tete-a-tete tno was interrupting. Oscar stepped into position at the foot of the staircase. "Stand on that corner stair, Madge," he said. "No, higher still; that's better. Wait until the window is opened, then flash the lawtern round, and fire at the wall below. The noise may frighten them away. If not, leave me to manage the rest; don't attempt to come down. Ah! they have started," aa a grwting sound was heard close by. They waited in hreatMeee suapense. Swiftly, and almost noiselessly, the work went on, till at last the shutters yielded, and a dark form was seen outside. "Bang" went a shot into the wall. It evidently staggered the unwel- come visitors, but after a moment a voice, which Madge recognised aa that of the shifty- eyed groom, exclaimed: — "It's only a girl; we can soon do for her. Harkee, miss," he shouted, "there are three of us here, and we can all shoot as straight as you. Let us in quiet, end we won't do you any harm; but we mean to have the plate somehow. That's settled her," he muttered. with a brutal laugh, as Madge, in obedience to a whispered "Keep quiet" from. Oscar, mads no reply. A slip of a boy was pushed through the broken panes, hut he scrambled back on the broad window-seat wMi a terrified "There's a man standing there; help me up, quick." "You little fool! It's only one of them bloomin figog-urs I told you about. Look sharp, and let us in." As the lad turned to do his bidding, the "bloomin' figgur" stepped forward and brought tihe flat of his sword with a mighty thwacit on the shoulder of his youthful adversary. The boy tumbled to the ground with a yell of pain and fright, while Oscar fired a couple of shots in rapid succession towards the dark forma looming dimly in the pale moonligfhit. The groom, thinking he had only his young mis- tress to deal with, sprsag through the open casement, but recoiled with a stifled oath as a grip of iron fastened on his throat. Oscar would soon have settled him. but was seized in hi? turn by the second man, a big, brawny fel- low, who, flinging himself on the two wrest- ling figures, forced them to the ground, Oscar undermost. The weight of his armour handi- capped him terribly, and he was forced to loose his hold of the groom and fling him off before he could struggle to his fe-t and tackle the more formidable antagonist. Madge, watching the combat with intense anxiety, dared not fire for fear of hitting friend as well as foe, but she and Trix. after a whispered consultation, stole down, resolved to attack the enemy in the rfar. "Oscar told me not to stir from here," Madge said, as Trix, the practical, handed her their father's huntmg crop, "but I can't leave him to fight three men single-handed." As it happened, the tihird "man" (aged 11) lay stunned where he had fallen on the stone flooring, but Oscar had all his work cut out to keep the other two at bay. He was beginning to wonder how much longer he could hold his own, when, simultaneously with what the girls believed to be an awful blow, though -the fellow who was trying his level best to throw Oscar, hardly felt it, oame a thundering knock at the dcor. It effectually settled the burglars. Seiz- ing the unconscious boy, they scrambled out of the broken window just as the squire, who had unexpectedly returned, gained admittance. The first thing he saw. on crossing the thres- hold was one of his own suits of armour appa- rently come to life. "W1ho the deuce are you, sir?" he Mid, wincing at the vigorous shake from the steel- gloved hand. "Oscar Calderwood, my own true knight, papa," answered Madge demurely, putting her hand on her lover's arm. The squire glanced sharply at the pair. "What an old fool I was not to guess how it would be!" he muttered. "And she refused one of the leading men of the day last season.' The burglary affair, however, drove all thoughts of the lovers out of his head for tihe time being, and when he had leisure to reflect he coneoled himself with the recolleotion that even if his future gon*in-law lacked worldly possessions, he was rich in chivalrous courage. TRADE AND POLITICS. AN INTERESTING- STORY. The "Sunderland Echo" reports thn," a Sfcn- deriand gentleman who has been in the Mtd- lands for a few days brings back an interest- ing piece of information. In the course of conversation a manufacturer told :)jm that in resentment of the German Emperor's telegram to President Kruger he had transferred to a firm at Lyons certain large orders which he had for year's sent to Germany. Some time after he had made this change he vas surprised to find himself questioned upon the subject by an official from tihe Board of Trade. This gentleman «*tat<?l that rupture? erf commercial connections with Germany, because of tW | Emperor's action, had been so numerous that I they had actually affected diplomatic r?Ia- t'ons, there bemp a. suspicion in Germany that the British Government had somehow instigated the resentful action of our traders. .? A GOOD CROP OF WHEAT. So much has been said as to the poor harvest of 1896 on many quarters, that it i's pleasant to hear of some farmers who did well. A staok of wheat, the produce of ten acres, on Court Farm, Southminster Marshes, in the occupation of Mr. A. J. Page, was threshed, and yielded 82 quarters, or over ten quarters an acre. This is the best crop of wheat grown in the district for years.
