OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY I- HOW MABEL WAS WON. I wee a gfrl of ten when I heard the following dory. It struck me then as something quite out of the ueutd routine of things, and I have treasured it in my memory. It Was related by Mr. Davies: "Since you are all my friends, and having teen my Mabel, you oannot blame me that my love for her bordered on frenzy; I will tell you how, at last, everything was brought about to Bay mind. Well, as stories have it, I was poor, and Mabel was an heiress. I was in love with her; but if she was with me she kept that love secret. Consequently my life grew to be one Prolonged misery. "Ah. but the day of all days, when affairs Carne to a crisis; when the darkest hour of night Wave way, making Toom for the bright morning of my love. Tellinjj Mabel that I loved her had grown to be one of my daily customs. So, nxpon that memorable day of which I speak, I ■•id: 'Mabel, if you will only love me I will do anything in the world for you.' "Mabel looked seriously at me for a moment, and then added: 'Cnarles, do you realise what you have been •'■yingT 'Oh, yee! Name the way in which you Vuh to t.en my love. t 'Well, that will do. We are to hare t party *°-*nom>w night j' she oommenoed, eeriougly; I '*U you promise me to attend it?' "I bowed. 'To-morrow forenoon,' the conunae-i, ^ting her white hand upon ray araa, and coming up alose to my side, I want you to make several aalls for me. One at the R. House, one at N. Hotel, and one upon Miss. Reeves. I wish you to promenade for a con- siderable lengitih of time up and down Broad- way.' With all my heart,' I responded. 'I see nothing disagreeable in that.' But you have nor, heard me through yet. I wish you to make this answer to every person wfho adSdresses you upon the street, at the hotel, or in any plaoe you ohanoe to be.' 'What?' I asked. 'These worde--Nonoe of your buginess!' "I oould not speak for several moments, I was so astounded, 'Will you do it?' 'Y-e-e,' I stammered. Very well- And now, but one thing more; you must ereport upon your word and honour to me the* whole of your adventuras. Will you?' Yes,' I answered feebly. 'Well, then, Hiere is my hand on the bar' gain. I "The following morning at ten o'clock I ataried for tihe. N. Hot.elI. My guardian's house was a long distance from it, and during rory walk I met many of my aoquaintouoee. As good luck would have it, they were all too hurried to greet me wiih anything bt53011a a bow a.nd good morn- ing, until T met fctiod Parson Wells. In vain I itried to dod««/5»im; looked in every direo- tion but the one from which he was coming, but to no account. He put his hand on my arm and eoundied a TOUTII" a-morning in my care. "I bowed and moved a step forward, but he held me fast. 'Do not hurry, young man. I wish to speak with you upon a subject which should put every other out of sight.' "I bowed again. 'How have you felt since I last conversed with you?' "Oh, that odious sentence, how could I utter it. 'None of your business!' I answered, plump and fair. "The gentleman looked as though he ex- pected the earth to open under my feet, so he stepped baok from me. "1 hurried away from him half-crazed. "A few moments' brisk wa-lk brought me to N. Hotel, which I entered with the air of a martyr. I had just stepped inside the hall, when a brisk voice began: 'Good morning Mr. Davies; you are just the person I have been wishing to see. Step into the parlour while I whisper in your ear a bit of good news.' "I thought for a certainty that I should &ink through the floor as I reluotantly followed my worthy friend, Mr. Allen, through the hall. For many months he had been striving to make room for me in his wholesale house, because he had taken an interest in me. 'Mr. Davies, I have it all arranged now as I have so long wished. You can have the head clerk-ship in our establishment. If you are faithful, in a few years you shall cow* in with u* as a partner. What do you say?' "My tongue clove to the roof of my mouth. 'Say, Davies, my good fellow, what do -you tihink of it?' he persisted^ 4i 'None—none of your business!' I gasped. "Mr. Allen looked me in the face a moment, and then rose, proudly, with a 'Very well, sir!' "I buried my face in my hands; I had insulted the wannest friend I had in the whole city. "Nothing can be worse than this, I thought. I will walk through the remaining scenes of this farce, like an undaunted actor. 'Hello, Charlie,' was the next exclamation that startled me, as I was walking up the steps of the R. House, and at the same moment a hand was laid familiarly on my shoulder. 'I haven't seen you for weeks. By the way, you haven't seen my little wife yet; come up now and be introduced. "A moment more and I was j'n the presence of Mrs. Langley--a. pretty, sweet little brunette. 'My friend, Mr. Davies, Mrs. Langley commenced Tom, with owrt of pride visible in his tone. "What would' I have given to have been myself-for the next half hour? I cursed myself for the foolish promise I had made; in my heart I called Mabel everything but a true woman. Why shouldn't I? I was making a fool of myself, a laughing-stock among my fri'ends. At last a bright thought struck me—'None of your business!' Surely I was not precluded from asking questions niyself. So 1 commenced a lively conversation with the lady, which I should have enjoyed heartily had I not been trembling all the while with fear lest she should ask me a question. One came at last, which I answered in French. I raw at once that she did not understand the language, but was too proud to admit the fact. I looked at Tom. H*io eyes blazed like fire. A moment more and I bowed myself out of the room. Tom's glance followed raft. He wu poeteued of a high I temper, and I felt anything but sure as to the way the affair would terminate. "Decidedly uncomfortable, I made my way towards the home of Miss Reeves. You may judge of my joy on being told that the lady was 8IMiy I With one 'bound I cleared the steps and landed on the sidewalk. I have always felt thankful for her timely absence. "I walked briskfly up Br.oadway congratula- ting myself that my trials were nearly ended, but vowing in my inmost heart that I would never bestow another tender thought upon Mabel Annis. 'How are you getting along?' sounded a pleasant voice at my elbow. I looked around to see the roguish, laughing face of Mabel Annis. 'None of your business!' I answered with marked emphasis. 'At two o'clock p.m. I reached home, sick and disheartened. I had lost a lucrative situation as well as the confidence of a tried and esteemed friend. I had insulted a woman, beside making myself ridiculous in numerous other instances. "With a,n air of sullennesa and pride, I sought Mabel, and told her of my exploits as well as I could, amid peals of ringing, musical laughter. 'After you have oalled upon Miss Reeves we'll ta'ik about commenced Mabel. 'Then you will never have that privilege!' I said, sternly. 'J!Ui!t as you please,' returned Maibel, with a toss of her head. J.'h-at I have acted the part of a foolish boy I'll admit,' I 6aid. "That you have made my love for you a weapon against myself you are well aware. But I am stronger now thaa I ww ihda morning. I do not think if you had cared for me you would have aided in making me appear ridiculous.' 'But I didn't mean any harm it was so funny that I couldn't help telling you to do it. You were always begging me to test your love, you know.' 'Test my love, Mabel! Why did you not tell me something to do that would have been an honour to you in the suggestion, and to me in the performance of it?' Ts it too late for you to be a true man now, Charlie? Would you try to be one if I ask you?' "I looked into Mabel's face. Tears were running down her cheeks, and her lips were quivering. My heart emote me for what I had been saying. After all, I loved Mabel better then any one in the worfd. "'Until six o'olock in the evening I busied myself in my room packing my trunk. When my task was nearly completed I was interrupted by a rap at the door, and on opening it Mabel etood before me. 'I am going away,' I said, as she glanced inquinmgly afiout the room. "'1 have done all that I can to repair the wrong I did you,' she said; 'I have called on Mr. Allen, and he said liha-t the situation was still yours, and that you were perfectly excusable. Mr. Langley laughed at my explanation, and said that he did not blame you. And Parson Wells, though harder to convince than the other gentlemen, said that when he had an opportunity of conversing with you he didn't doubt he should fully exculpate you from all blaane. That is all,' and she turned to go. 'No, no, you shall not go from me in this way, after you have proved yourself so noble a woman. Only consent to be my wife, and I will be everything you wish me to be,' I said, passionately. 'Will you be my wife!' "Mabel's rosy lips quivered, and her eyelids dropped over her eyes, as she placed both her hands in mine. And I don't believe there was ever a happier person in existence than I when I pressed a betrothal kiss upon her lips."
A HUMANE CUSTOM.
A HUMANE CUSTOM. In Norway a bucket of water is always placed within reaoh of a horse when he is taking his allowance of hay. "It is interesting," says a writer, who has recently visited the country, "to see with what relish they take a sip out of one and a mouthful of the other alternately, sometimes only moistening their mouths, as any rational being would do while eating a dinner of such dry food. A broken-winded horse is scarcely ever seen in Norway."
CHOLERA BARRACKS.
CHOLERA BARRACKS. South Russia has unfortunately serwal times during late years been visited by cfoolera. and now, by the aid of the Government, permanent cholera barracks are being erected at Odessa, Sevastopol, Novorossisk, Batoum, Kertch, Poti, Berdiansk, and many other places, which will be ready for occupation by next spring. The want of these barracks has been greatly- felt, as the hospitals in general throughout South Russia are greatly undermanned, and their sanitary arrangements are in s. deplorable state. -?_. --?-

LAMBS FROM NEW ZEALAND.
LAMBS FROM NEW ZEALAND. r'he heavy export of lambs from New Zea- land is said to be seriously telling upon the number of sheep raised in the Colony, and to be imperilling the prospects of both the wool and frozen mutton trades. The subject has as- sumed such importance that the leading men in pastoral affairs, imcluding those interested ir. freezing factories, are being urged to tales the question into earnest oonsddera-tioin, a.nd to impress upon all flock owners the necessity of -.naintaining and ever increasing the strength of their breeding flocks by reserving for breed- ing purposes a sufficient proportion of their best ewe lambs.

ONE WHO SAW BONAPABTE.
ONE WHO SAW BONAPABTE. There is still living at Olivet, near Orleans, a centenarian named Miehaut, who was at one time the valet of Laffitte, the great banker. M. Miehaut most probably was the confiden- tial servant who ushered Napoleon into the presence of his master, when. nfter the Water- 100 crash, the Emperor visited Paris as a fugitive, and placed in Laffitte's hands the sum of £ 200,000. Honest Laffitte. the son of a poor joiner at Bayonne, was a man whom monarch s could implicitly tru t. Louis VIII. had the same faith as Napoleon in the rectitude of the banker; for in 181b his Bour- bon Majesty on his departure for Ghent de- 1 posited with Laffitta a very conside'ift sum.
