It was necessary ito knock; Mrs. Murphy had left her latch-key in the kitchen. The door as opened' by the dapper gentleman who had caused so much alarm. That s h>m, said the Irishwoman, in a loud whisper. "Hold your tongue. I want to see Mr. Milldue," the inspector added. The unknown reddened. "I—I'm Mr. Milldue," he stammered. "So you're Mr. Milldue, are you?" the in- spector continued. "I wouldn't have believed it if you hadn't told me." He produced a note- book. "Thank I'd better take your answer down. What do you eay your name is?" "Peter Milldue. Surely you know me Mr. Bolter?" "No, I don't; I never saw you before that I'm aware of. Where do you live?" "Here. I've lived here nearly ten years." "That'll do, young man. You're in custody. You can pitch that tale to somebody else." "What are you going to charge me with 1" "Being on Mr. Milldue's premises for 'l.n un- ilawful purpose." "It a ftbsurd. Look here. Now that silly woman, who couldn't keep a secret to save her life, is gone, I'U—- The man in oiurtody stopped as if he had swklemly changed his mind. Thrusting hie hand into hil breast pocket, he produced a sheaf of letters and a banker's pass-book. I "Tlieae will satisfy you," he guid., Inspector Bolter examined them. All the envelopes were addressed] to "Peter Milldue, Esq." He opened the pass-book. "Peter Mill- due" stared him in the face. "They're good evidence that you have robbed Mr. Milldue, and they'll 'be produced in court." "In court!" cried the prisoner in alarm. "Give me my letters!" "They are not yours," said the inspector, putting-them in his pocket. The return of Mrs. Murphy with a constable put an end to the conversation. The inspector ordered the officer to take the prisoner to the police-station: Inspector Bolton returned to the police- station later on. "Rum go this, sir," exclaimed the sergeant in charge. "What'g that?" "This chap as says he's old Milldue, gir. When he isn't crying in the cell like a baby, he's a-vowing awful vengeance on us all." The Shingleton Police-court was crowded. Mrs. Murphy had told everybody she knew that Mr. Milldue had been murdered. Mr. Bompas, justice of the peace, had heard the news and was almost punctual. "Call the man who SltY8 he's Milldue," øa:.d the magistrate's clerk. The next moment the prisoner stood in the dock. He did not look the worse for the brief confinement. His black hair was smooth, his attire unwrinkled. Aeked' his name, he replied as before: "Peter Milldue." "Ridiculous!" cried the magistrate. "The height of absurdity! Don't ask him any roore questions. Inspector, what do y,ou know about him?" Mr. Bolter told! ahA mXoxjt briefly <rf tbe*rrit, addinsr; "I apply for a remand, your y>rship. Let- ters were found on the prisoner iddressed to Mr. Milldue by a lady. I have bt yet com munioated with her. I propose to c 6o to-day." "I -forbid y.ou!" shouted' the p.3oner shak- ing his fist at the inspector, in greaexciteinent. "I won't allow you to communion with Miss Taplev in any way!" Here, the newspaper reports f the case, the word "sensation" was ipterp<ated. "The inspector will do his duty said the magistrate. "You are remanded for three days." Now, only a few years back, Shingleton had consisted of three fishermen's uta and a coastguard station. It was a brandjew town, and the disappearance of Mr. Milltie was its first mystery. Naturally it revelled u it. Meanwhile, Inspector Bolter too the first train to Bamford-super-Mare, with Jr. Mill- due's correspondence in his pocket. lIe found the writer of the letter without Jifficulty. Miss Tapley proved to be a good-losing, dig- nified lady of thirty or thereaibits. She admitted the correspondence at once "'Mr. Milldue is missing," said theispoctor. "He has probably gone to London. He told me he would go yesterday," she said. Hump':iInspector Bolter too a letter from his pooket-book. "Do you recojise this writing?" "Yes. It is zn authority I gave -?-. Mill- due to receive the money and 'eoourita men- tioned therein on my behalf." "This letter—this authority," oontilled the police officer, impressively—"was tain from a man, a stranger in Shingleton, mom I arrested in Milldue's house. He decked he was Milldue himself. There is no Cubt in my mind that he was aware Milldue wi going to reoeiye this monev, and thfft acootts for Milldue's mysterious disappearance. He wouldn't go to London without this paper?" No. He was going entirely on my account -to obtain the money. Do you suspect that he has been-that, something hae happened to him I' and Mis« Tapley feemed in great dis- tress. "I knew Mr. Milldue very well when I was a child, twenty yeats ago. I have lost sight of him until about a week since. He had learnt that I am entitled to a large sum of money, and that I was being advertised' for, and he came over to seek me. He stayed here a week. He returned to Shingleton the day before yesterday." Two hours later Inspector Bolter conducted Miss Tapley to the prisoner's cell door and re- moved the cover of the spying hole. "Gracious! what an es-apo site whispered. The police officer took her a^ide. I thought you would knew him," he said. In fact, I was sure of it. Now we have a "clue to Mr. Milldue's disappearance. Who io he?" "Mr. Milldue himsfclf!" "Oh, nonsense "Well, he is the man who r-fine to Bam ford as Mr. Milldue. All I "id, I had not setn him for twenty years. If he is not my unoic's old friend my escape is most fortunate." "What do you mean' "He—he asked me to marry him, under- taking to get. this money if f would do so. I understand thfre are difficulties and expanses. I felt very gratefull, a.od-Uld I consented." Inspector Bolter looked the pieiura of a puzzled police-officer. Recovering, however, he despatched Miss Tapley to London. to the solicitors who were supposed to have advertised for her. It was necessary to know whether the story of the legacy told by the mysterious prisoner were true or a fabrioatioo. Then ha wired to ilt-t I ccunty town for the assistance of a couple of directives. They came. They marched Lombard Villa by way of a start, but discovered nothing of imporitance. The almost fruitless search ended. Injector' Bc.ter took his assistants to the prisoner's ceil, in the hope that they would recognise h'm. "Thought you said he was a young fellow?" said the firstt to look through the spying hole. "So he is," whispered the inspector, applying his eye. He started back instantly. r:lR pale as a corpse. f79 "I'm n ruined m<n he ir^sp^d. The next moment he had the door unlocked and stood within the cell. The prisoner had changed to an old man, almost bald. The few hairs remaining were white. He was asleep, with his head bowed over the tabie. On the floor lay a wig. "What do v.r,u mean bv Hut. Mr Millduo?" "What do you mean by it?" was the rs.ioinder. after an astonished pause. "Didn't I get black- in the face with telling you I was myself and nobody eJse? D'ye think I was going to let Shingleton know why I chose to make myself look young and smart, again ? Thank? to your stupidity, the folks will know, I suppose; but if vou'> done tr.e out of a wife and ten thousand pounds into the bargain you'll be sorry for it as Ion? as ever you live." No time was 10Pt in getting the Shingleton 'character" outside the Shingleton Police-court. As he left the building, a telegram was handed to the downcast prune mover. He tore open tje envelope. "From Tapley. London, to Bolter, Police- "That rattles it!" exclaimed the unfortunate inspector. "I'll ha.ve to olear out of Shincle- tcn." ) He did. The marriage of Mr. Milldue to Miisi Taplev wu announced shortly afterwards.
