Lem's Father
Lem's Father The driver was naturally a very sociable and communicative man, and I forgot the bumping of the stage over the rough country road, so firmly was I held by the magic in fluence of his narrations. I was his only passenger, and he seemed happy through an 1 through at finding so appreciative a lis. tener as myself. "So you are agoin' up to Lem Simson's a-fishin', are ye?" he began. "I suppose you know Lem pretty well, don't you?" "Never mind him," I replied. "I saw his advertisement in the paper, and am just coming up and taking the chances of having a good time." "He's a good feller, Lem is," continued the driver, as he flipped a fly gracefully off the near horse's ear with the whip, "but he ain t half as funny as his father was. Why, his father was one of the funniest fellers in the hull community, and nobody knew what to make of him, and his name was Lem, too. When old Lem was a young man he was a great feller for runnin' races. His only trouble was that he had to run a mile before he could get his second wind, and he was trying in some way to get up a plan fer get- ting his second wind first. Of course, he couldn't do it, but he finally struck on a win- ning plan. He would give the other feller a mile start in a mile race "What" I exclaimed, "give an opponent a one-mile start in a one-mile race—why did he do that?" "SU'fi lu'd havo sa. *iir« thuiflLaEL winnm*. XftU see, the other feller didn't know he was gettin' the mile start. This is the way Lem's father did the trick: He would always get to the track just before the race, after the other feller had run round a few times to limber himself up a little. Then he would afik for a few minutes to limber up himself, and he would run around with all his might and main and get his second wind, while the other feller was restin' on the bench and gettin' all the wind outer him. Then, of course, Lem's father would start off in the race with his prime second wind and win the race without tryin' The stage-driver paused for breath and pointed out some objects of interest and con- tinued "Lem's father was always expermentin' in all sorts of ways. Once he pot up a barbed- wire hen-I mean a lot of barbed-wire made up in the shape of a hen. Lem made a lot of them and put a. hen inside of each one and turned them out in the field. Every time a chicken-hawk would land on one of them hens he'd pretty well scratch his feet off on the barbed-wire, and he wouldn't came around again in a hurry. One day a hawk got his feet tangled into the barbed-wire and flew up in the air with the whole business. The hen was as sadb as in a baseball catcher's mask, and whan the hawk got loose down came the hen, but, of course, the mask struck the ground first and bounced around pretty lively and broke all the force, so the hen wasn't hurt at all. Then Lem put barbed- wire masks onte. the geese, just the same's he did onto the chickens, so's the foxes couldn't øt them. Bet. ofteu:fouad fox-teeth in the wires in the morning. This barbed-wire goose- protector turned out very well. You know geese and ducks always wander away and lay their eggs in the swamps, and farmers always try to keep them in the barnyard. Now, Lem rigged a nest on to the rear end of each goose-mask, so's when a goose laid an egg it couldn't get lost. Then he would let them go wanderin' around all over, knowin' that he was all right on the egg business. As soon as the goose found she was feelin' over- balanced and too heavy at one end she would be afraid to go into the water for fear she would have to sit up straight like a penguin and tread water. Then she would go home to let Lem unlock the nest and take the eggs out." "How could the goose keep afloat incased in such a suit of armour?" I asked in a manner intended to convey to him the idea that I was just a bit sceptical. "You see, he had holes for the head and feet of the goose to stick through, and on the top of the contrivance an air-tight tomato- can lashed on with barbed-wire, so the goose couldn't sink. I have seen one of the geese pull in his head and feet up on the hill behind Lem's house when a fox came around and roll down the hill into the pond. But I tell you geese know a lot. Now, one of these geese used to help Lem kill rattlesnakes." "Beat the snakes to death with his wings?" I asked naturally. "Not much!" he replied. "Just with her horse sense, because the goose has more liorse sense than horses have. She would go out and look at the snakes and the snakes would tiy to charm her, but ooaa* calx laiutfied* because the smoked-glass spectacles that Lem rigged onto the goose knocked the life out of the snake, and he couldn't charm worth a cent. Then she would turn around to let the snake see the eggs piled up in the wire nest. The snake would quickly let his family know about the big dinner, and they would all follow the goose, that would keep movin just fast enough to lead them along. And she would keep on a leadin' them right along down to where old Lem was a grinnin' ior all he poesest, with a club in his hand. As soon as they all got into the barnyard, where there wam't no grass to help the snakes out, Lem would jump out with his club "nd in three or four minutes all them snake-skias would be a hangin' on the corn-crib gettin' cured for the belts and pocketbooks. Lem made a fortune out of that goose, and he told me that she was a blamed sight better ier ketchin' rattlesnakes than the dozen eelpots he used to set every night out in the nld huckleberry medder, before the goose went inter business with him."

A Nantucket Romance
A Nantucket Romance Many years ago the town of Nantucket oould iboaat the largest whaling port in the world. Traders from foreign climes landed upon its shores and roamed its quaint old. streets. Upon the south shore of this island* cne summer afteraoon of that time, so long aggf £ ,were a girl of some sixteen years and a, boy of five. The girl, with a book, in which; J she was deeply absorbed, upon the beach,, the boy idly playing at her .side. Every now I and then he dipped his bare feet into the,, ( water, laughing gleefully 3.6 it came eveir 1 nearer with each incoptiog wave. Sudden Ijr 1 he stooped, pioked up a shell, and ran to th# girl, crying, "See, Jennie, a shell like the OIK* I we find at Wauwinet!" Yes, RóbtJi I," site ■ said, absently, "so it is. R'Iln away, dear, and) let Jennie finish her story-" Looking up for I a moment at the waves, brightly dancing in the sunlight, she added. "Be careful not to 1 go too far"; then back to her book, everything { forgotten in its absorbing interest. "Oh, I Jennie, I've lost the Pretty shell, the water is carrying it a^ay." Th(,n a sudden sharp cry,, and she QW the curly h(,md 1 vanish from her sight. A second, and the ] water held them 'both. It was a fierce struggle, but five minutes later the girl, with wet clothes I clinging to her slight figure, alqwly wended her i way across the commons which separate the south shore of Nantucket from the town—with a llifeless burden on pr arnas- Slowly and I painfully ehe wand■mad <• The sun had set i before she reached the bifjhway. JOnoe she ] paused to rest, Out bar tightly dinging flkifta. 1 4D4 the awful *9* & M* ,h? her weary limbs, and she pressed resolutely on. Staggering under the child's dead weight she at last reached a house upon the outskirts of the village. The few passengers from the even- ing boat had long since landed1. The twilight had deepened, and she did not see the ap- proaching figure of a man, who, by the dim light, saw the swaying form, and took the boy from her arms, as she fell exhausted at h.:s feet. "Two patient at once. Well, Carl Bur- gesa, you're in luck," eajd the young fel- .low, a physician who had just arrived in Nan- tucket, and who looked upon this unwught patronage almost ae a dispensation of Provi- dence. Suddenly the boy's lips moved feebly, and Carl caught the whisper, "I found the shell, Jennie," amd saw that he had something grasped tightly in his little hand. With the help of neighbours who had gathered round, young Burgess Carried his patients into the house. In his effort to restore the girl' to life the boy, who had already partially re- covered, was forgotten. And when, after two hours of untiring effort, she re-gaiined con- sciousness, and asked for Robbie, the young physician looked up quickly, but no one could answer the unspoken question in his glance. The child had vanished like a dream. Active search was made from end to end of the island. Large rewards were offered, but little Robbie Gardner had disappeared as effectually as if the ocean had never given him back to his sister's arms. Dr. Burgees sat in his offioe one night ten years later, during one of the worst storms of an unusually inclement season, when there -came an imperative knock at the door. Opening it he saw a man in the garb of a sailor, who said abruptly, "Are you the doctor?" "I aim," was the reply. "Come with me," said the sailor. With the okedaeace of omg tnused to gueetibn- inig, Dr. Burgeas followed his strange guide down to an old wharf, where a ship lay at anchor. A young lad was stretched uncon- scious upon the deck. "'E fell from the tops'l, sir: d'ye think ye can bring 'im to ?" with deep anxiety in hit voice and manner. "I think so," said the doctor, gently lifting the boy's head, and looking at the ugly out in his temple. "'E ain't no kin o' mine," ron- t-iiiued the sailor, as Dr. Burgess, with tender, skilful fingers, blushed tha matted ctrls from the iad's forehead, as he dressed the wound. "I'm a rover, sir, and a stranger in these 'ere parts. The little chap come to me one night just aa I was puttin' off to sea from this 'ere island, ten year ago, or thereabout, seemin' a lone 'un like myself—dazed like--not quite right 'ere (point- ing to his head). I took him along with me, and night after night 'e slept in my arms, till I learned to love 'im as if 'e were my own. L That's all I can tell ye, except," continued the sailor, with a sound strangely like a sob in his husky voice, "I've bin a better man since that night, but," and a change passed swiftly over the weather-beaten face, as he said fiercely, "If ho dies, I swear by the God who sent 'im to me, I'll Stop!" said Dr. Burgees, laying his strong, magnetic hand upon the shoulder of the excited iran, God wants not your oaths, and I want your help." When the lad1 opened hit eyes again he was in a softly lighted room, and a woman's tender faoe beat over him. "Oh, Carl, do you think it possible, that it can be Robert?" "Jennie," he atDamered. "ten years can work many changes in a human face, and environment more. But if you atald have doubti, this should remove tbsED^" and be beckoned to the old sailor, who stood near, and who, at a sign from Carl, took I from his pooket a beautifully-tinted scallop sheill, and handed it to her. Robert Gardner's identity was now fully established. The old sailor, although he always remained a rover, was no longer a "lame 'un," being always mire of a warm welcome from three loyal hearts whenever he dropped anchor at Nantucket. "But for a Shell," Jennie Burgiess often said, "I never should have found my brother." And Carl would add, gravely, with the memory of that niLght so long ago still in his mand: "But for a shell, I never should haive met my wife."
BELGIAN COMPETITION IN STEEL…
BELGIAN COMPETITION IN STEEL JOISTS. The development of the manufacture of steel joitts for house building at Middlesborough and Glasgow is heartily welcomed in the Mid- lands, pointing to the break-up of the monopoly in this industry hitherto possessed by the Belgians. Birmingham merchants are now obtaining the bulk of their supplies of house joists from the North of England and Soot- land, instead of Antwerp and Rotterdam.
