"DOR 0 THY LI NEAL"
a- —wini ■ —— I "DOR 0 THY LI NEAL" A NO VEX. I I CHAPTER V.—(Continued.) j Til keep still," Dorothy said; "but I .eel | *s if I should never sleep again, nurse. "I'll hear what you have got to say about :that when I come to wake you to-morrow, iny dearie," Bently returned, giving a fulal pat to the pillows and then she stole away, shutting the door softly behind her. Dolly lay still, as she had promised. She [listened for sounds from her father s ifc was quite near hers, »n the other si e o the corridor. All was still there. Strain ler ears as she might she could hear nothing. And slowjy aiid imperceptibly sleep -stole -upon the girl. Even while she said to herself. "I shall not sleep to-night-I know I shall mot," her eyelids slosed, and she slept. How long she slept she never knew. She Was roused by the sound of low voices ou side her door.' She started up, half doubtful "whether they had b^en voices in her dreams. The day was dawning; the grey light filled the room. "I can't—I can't tell her!" ^was voice, half-choked with sobs. "Let Ihersleep while she can, ma'am. 'Twould be cruel to wake her! And then she knew that her dream of the old nurse coming weeping to her bedside and bending over her was no dream at all. And she knew-—the knowledge came to her lii with the swiftness of a, lightning flash— what the old nurse had come to tell her. Dorothy stood before her nurse and Eliza- beth with a strangely, alarmingly white accus- ing face. The step-mother shrank before her look. It was only a look Dorothy gave her. She did not speak till Bently caught her arm and tried to draw her back from the door of her father's room. She thrust the nurse's hand away. "I know!" she said. "He is dead! But you shall not keep me from him now. Let me go to him. I was the only one who loved him I' CHAPTER VI. "Tom I'm thoroughly ashamed of you And Tom's sister thrust her thimble and scissors into their cases, and brought down the lid of her work-basket with an irritated snap that added emphasis to her words. But Tom showed no desire to take up arms in his own defence. "What's the good of flying act like that, Km?" he said, in a mild, unaggressive tone. It was so unlike Tom to be meek that Emmie's heart turned faint. "You aren't ill-are you. Tom?" Tom burst into a laugh that somewhat relieved her fears. "What a little goose you are, Em," he I said. "Don't for goodness sake, be always asking George if he's ill, when he's not in- clined to talk! There's nothing aggravates a man more." "George will never sit sulking over the fire for a whole morning, or shut out a poor in- offensive dog in the cold," replied Emmie, with dignity. "As if poor Ponto was to blame for last evening!" "Oh, Ponto's the grievance—is he" s%id Tom, with a quizzical look at his sister. He had taken her rebuke to heart, and he was making a valiant effort to throw off the depression that had weighed upon him since Nancy Reynolds slighted him so openly the evening beifore. In the opinion 01 most pet-pie the party had been a great success. Mrs. Elliot and the Rector-good unsuspecting gentle souls -agreed that it was the best party they had ever given. And they could not understand why Tom thought Mr. Willcox so disagree- able. He was a little blunt, perhaps, but he was a man of good sense and kindly heart. He had promised a large subscription to- wards the restoration of the church. And how pretty Nancy Reynolds had looked! It was plain what Mr. Willcox wanted; and certainly that evening pretty Nancy had not been inclined to frown upon him. And Tom, who worshipped his father and mother, listened to their rambling happy talk with a smfiing face, and they never guessed what the evening had been for him. With Emmie, how^r, b did aot tänk it necessary to keep up appearances. She had discovered his secret before she donned long frocks; for Tom had been hopelessly in love with Nancy even then; indeed, he found it impossible to remember a time when he had not been in love with her. Half the trees in the little pinewood between the Rectory garden and the lawn oi Clyde House, had Nancy's initials scratched upon them, sometimes intertwined with his in au uucfe- cipherable monogram, sometimes alone. Nancy had often been a witness of this wood- carving. Only a few weeks before, on a sunny February afternoon, he had enticed her out into the wood while the others were busy in the garden, and she had sat on the trunk of a fallen pine and watched him cut "N.R." in bold letters high up on their favourite tree. And now Tom onashed his tee ill as he thought of her smiling up at Mr. Willcox as she had smiled at him under the pine trees, listening to his scftly-uttered speeches just as she had listened to his, making a hopeless slave of the brewer just as she had made a slave of him. And Mr. Willcox was a brewer; that was the hardiest part of it. He had his brewery to offer her, and also a handsome balance at the bank; while Tom had nothing but his Oxford degree—and that not evtn an honour degree, poor Tom!—and his "Blue" for play- ing against Cambridge in the 'Varsity cricket match, and a sufficiently formidable list of debts, incurred during his first two years at Oxford if. to" hospitable entert^jjp«#nt of his friends. "Even if I got a mastership right off," thought Tom, with an inward groan, as he sat by the fixe in the gloomy silent piood that had brought down Emmie's wrath upon him. "we couldn't be married for years. She'd never have consented to rough it, even if I could have made her love me. And she couldn't have behaved as she did last night if she had cared a brass farthing for me." Then came Emmie's little outbreak of tem- per and Tom felt ashamed of his sulks. "Here, I'll have Ponto back, Em," he said. "I forgot he "was old George's favourite dog." He got up and opened the door, and whistled; but Ponto was not visible. Tom, veaily anxious to atone to Emmie for his behaviour to her dog, crossed the hall and opened the front door. There was only a small semi-circular sweep of lawn in front of the house, and the entrance gate was closc to it. Outside the gaie, the Rector and Doctor Warton stood talking. Doctor Warton had his horse with him-he had been on a long country round- but he had sprung off it on seeing the Rector at the gate, and now stood with his arms over the saddle, his tall powerful-looking tigure and dark. stern, strongly-cut face affording a marked contrast to the somewhat short, trim, benevolent-looking clergyman. Ponto was standing with two brown paws On the gate, apparently listening to the con- versation but he helird the front door open, and jumped down with a joyous bark to run roo Tom. eager to show tie bore no malice. Tiuj Rector turned and %,sw his son. and beckoned to him. "Tom. I'vi hiaid seme bad news. I'm telling Warton," he said, when Tom had crossed the little lawn. "I've just come from Clyde, and Elton's steward has had a tile- gram. Poor Mr. Lineal is dead—died quite suddenly last night." Tom, who knew more of the history of Elizabeth LineaFs marriage than his father. could not restrain the quick glance that sought Dr. Warton's face. Rut it told him nothing. The news to which he Lad just listened might have concerned a man whose name he had never heard before, for all trace ot emotion to lie seen in the doctoi's strong, keen, dark lace. "Why did Elton's steward have a tele- gram?" he asked, after Tom had made some, brief remark on the suddenness of the news. Linaal was in treaty for Clyde House, von. know," answered the Rector. "Indeed, 'C seems that he had actually completed the purchase. Most likely he was looking forward to many long happy years here; but the summons came to him, as it will come to us all one day." "I wonder if they know? Her mother and father. I mean," said Tom, after a momentary pause. Doctor Warton had not spoken. He had turned to tighten the girths of his saddle. "Assuredly they must know. They would y have a telegram at once. I wonder if Eliza- beth—Mrs. Lineal—will come to Clyde? It will be her son's, I should say. But it is too soon for us to bt, discussing points like that," added the Rector, with a grave air. Neither of his companions made any com- ment on his speech. "I must get back to Fordhani," Doctor Warton said. "I have a dozen visits to pay before I can have a meal. He shook hands with the Rector nd Tom, and swung himself up on to his horse with an easy grace. I As he galloped :ip the road the Rector ¡ looked after him admiringly. "What a splendid-looking fellow he is he ¡ said. "I never saw a man w ith a better seat. But I w sh he were not quite so grim and silent. He took the news hi poor Lineal's j n death as if I'd told him the church ill es wanted sweeping I He had more of the milk of human kindness in him once though I'm afraid he's hardening as he gets older. He ought to marry. There's nothing like that, Tom. for keeping a man's heart young." Tom smiled rather ruefully as he followed his father back to the house. I "Any one who didn't know the dear old dad woui think he was jeering at me," he said to himself. "But he and the mater can never see an inch beyond their noses. I don't I suppose, for instance, he has the faintest idea that Warton was over head and ears in love with E'i; ?th. I Tom announced his intention of going into ) the town as soon as luncheon was over. "Won't you come with me, Emmie?" he i asked. "It would give Ponto a run; and ¡ you could write and tell George to-night that you've taken him for a walk." "I/m not goin^ to caJI :H the Reynolds's, ??- -?-- -?--?- mind," said Emmie, severely. "It wouldn't be decent, Tom." "My dear, if yry are near the house, I think you ought to call at the door and inquire about Mrs. -nolds." put in gentle Mrs. Jowett. "This sudden news must have been a great shock to her." "\VeIl, at the door," consented Emmie with reiuclaiioe. Before his mother Tom was f.n to appear consent with this concession but lie broke out into bitter speech as he and Knirrn'e walked along the wide level road that led into Fordha.m. "It's such a farce lo preterd thev'i' be over- come with grief at the news 1" lie said. "You know better, at any rate, Em. They'll be glad, of course; and Elizabeth will rejoice as much as any of them." 'That s a. hateful, unfeeling, horrid thing to say," exclaimed Emmie, indignantly. "Well, the truth is hateful and horrid some- limes," retorted Tom. "I was fond enough of Bessie once—almost as fond as I am of you, Em—but I gave her up when she threw over Warton for that old man's monev." "Tom, don't!" entreated Emmie, in a shocked tone. "It. isn't like you to speak like that. And she wasn't engaged to Doctor Warton. You've no right to say she flung liim over." "Haven't k9" he said, very enralv. "No—you haven't. Least of all, just now. And Mr. Lineal wasn't aa old man. He was a most interesting man and "Now, hold your tonirue, I'll hold mine, ?-?- ?.?- if nothing else will cOIItent you; but I can't listen to rubbish like that. It Isn't only Elizabeth who prefers a rich husband. Most women would act as she did, if they had the chance, I dare say. And her weeds will make her look handsomer than ever. She'Jl want to marry Nancy well now. I expect it's the brewer's turn to be thrown over." "If you're feeling like that, I wonder you care to call to inquire about Mrs. Reynolds and Nancy," said ilmmie, in a cutting tone. "Didn't mother say we ought to call 1" re- torted Tom. "We must be careful of appear- ances, my dear. Tuey are, you see. Look, they've got all the blinds down. Well, a millionaire son-in-law deserves that attention, if he s good enough to die at a conveniently early date." They had approac'.ed close to the house as Tom was speaking; and just as they paused to knock, the door was opened, and Mr. Reynolds caane out dressed in deep mourning, with a new hat-band round his hat, a port- manteau in his hand. He greeted the brother and sister with a grave cordiality. Tom lost his presence of mind by catching a glimpse of Nancy in the iiall as the door closed after Mr. Reynolds; but Emmie was q 11al to the occasion, and made her inquaies in just the right tone of friendly concern.
