J Noil-intoxicating beverages would be all ths more acceptable if served by Mr. E. Beavan. If ecxme of our worthy aldermen could I be enlisted to act as gondoliers upon the 1 lake they would prove a great attraction. Alderman Cory, in collier's costume, might act as conductor tlirough the coal- mine. Possibly Lord Windsor might give ex- hibitions of his skill as a lightning artist —pictures painted in twenty minutes, price Is. 3d. each. And perfcsps some of our well-known athletes might compete to lower the world's records in sprinting, &c. I

THE MYSTERY OF HAROLDSTONE…
THE MYSTERY OF HAROLDSTONE HALL, BY E. BOWEN ROWLANDS (Barrister, at-TAw) ?. CHAPTER *X.—Continued. "In thinking that Syselton killed Madge." "Oh, Gerald!" "I fear it is but too true; Syselton had a ibottle of poison in his room; understands the use of drugs and poisons, and I \3ink Picke is telling the truth in saying that he saw him go into the room where the body was. He went there, but I can t guess the rea&on; the aff tir is enwrapped in mystery. What did he want in tlw room, and why should he have stabbed the poor gril ? w "Why should he ha.ve poisoned her?" she said, curiously. "God only knows." He leaned against the the picture of dejeciAon. "I wouMi not even try to fathom his ir otive." "Gerald!" She was aumoyed lit his strangeness, but she felt that she should humour him, and help him out of the mental morass into which the tragedy had thrown him. She pTtt h&r arms around his neck. '"Gerald, dear, tailk to int; so much thinking fill do you no good." "My little darling!" He held her in kis asms. Yo-u are a clear little woman "Not so very little, dear-jst," she said, I 1rith « TOguish smile. "No bet all the same- you are nvy ttttfe woman." She kissed him for an answer. "I am worried to death about this. If I oouild find out who brought you The needle She interrupted him. "I know; it came back to me directly you had gone last night. It was Mr. Farworthy." "Jack! My God; you don't know what you are saying." "Yes, I do quite well. Mr. Farworthy came with me into the room, and when the conjuror asked for a needle I told him to get one; I am positive that is so, and I can now, when I try to recollect it, remember how long he was away, and how we all waated for him until we were ready to lynch him for taking so much time to find an ordin- ary needSe. What is the matter, Gerald? You are not ill?" she said, seeing how pale Aden had become. NID, dear, I am not; but this is all very sudden and very bad. The man who brought tha-t needle is the man who poisoned Madge. On the point of it was the deadly poison which killed her. Ah," he cried, bitterly; I see it all now; his prolonged ahsea.ee from the room; the knowledge he kid of the bottle which belonged to Syse J*>i. and COK- tained poison. Jack!" he cried; in^cwihle, I it cannot be)" Mrs. Rawson soothed him, "No, no; I am certain it was not; but there, I am so con- fused that I hardly know where I am standing. Mr. Picke compromises Mr. Syselton, and then you break down under the weight of the evidence which goes to prove that Jack Far- worthv killed' the girl he affected to love. My dear Gerald, do be sensible talk to me, dear, you can think of this to-morrow." "I will see Syselton the first thing in the morning, and after him Farworthy; and the man who did this cruel deed shall have no mercy from me," Aden declared, furiously. "Does it lie between them, then?" Mrs. Rawson asked softly. Yes; for everything points to them. I shouldn't be surprised if they were found to be in a conspiracy. I will unmask them, and though Jack is my best friend I will deal hardly with him if he has done me and mine this great wrong." Mrs. Rawson had never seen Aden in such a state of mind before; he was usually very reserved and quiet, and accustomed to allow things to take their own oourse pretty much as they liked. Now, on the contrary, he had lost most of his self-control, and paced up and down the room like a caged lion. "I shall write to uncle," he continued, "to-morrow also, and bring him home. Picke I will hand over to the police; I will find out for myself the villain who killed her." She saw it was useless to attempt to re- strain him, but she tried to calm him, and succeeded. Before lie left he had promised to take no further steps until he had seen hix, but much against her will the had permitted .hi_. to v.isit Syseltaa. "To-morrow night I sliall be here again; till then, good-bye." He put bis arnis around her and kissed her again and again, and then he walked downstairs and home in a very storm of rain. Mrs. Rawson lay awake throughout the greater part of the night thinking of him. She loved him more than she would admit, and regretted his having taken upon himself the task of exposing the mystery of her friend's death. "Dear Gerald' she said to herself, and with his name on her lips she fell asleep. CHAPTER XI. When Picke was clear of the house, his effrontery returned, and with it the desire to make money out of someone. Blackmailing is more of a mania than a profession, and holds its victims tightly to its side. It never lets go. Picke had failed wth Mrs. Rawson, an,d, in Aden's possession were the cheque and receipt ready to be handed over to the police at any minute. Something was to be made out of the "affair," and he wanted money; the spirit of the blackmailer possessed him. Mrs. Rawson was "no good," neither was Aden. Syselton,, the meek, blushing little man should be his next subject. He was the man he had seen go into the room and use the knife. In most cases it is easier to deal with a man than a woman, the former being more susceptible to fear, but Picke was not far out in assuming that the strongest-minded woman will submit to any extortion and persecution to help the man she loves. He had been unforirr> hat was all, with Mrs. Rawscwi.* sit-y v. a little bit too clever M?-? to believe everything she was told, and, like the wise woman she wa.s, went straight to the fountain head to trace the source. "Never suspected she'd tell Aden, hanged if I did." So thought the clerk as he cuffed a crossing- sweeper who had intentionally brushed up against him. The sweeper drew attention to his assail- ant s lack of beauty, remarked on his general appearance, and wound up by a flattering reference to his eyes. He then disappeared. Mr. Picke, muttering unpleasant words under his breath, walked into a restaurant and asked for a directory. It was brought to him, and he looked out Syselton's address, but could not find it. He knew that he lived in Bel- grave-square, but was ignorant of the number of the house, so he trudged off through the slush and mud, and enquired at the various houses until he was enabled to make his friendly call. He peaked by mistake the servants' bell, and a piping voice was heard ascending from the are a, "Tlus is the way, can't yer cum d'aown?" Picke leaned over the railing and anathe- mati sed the page who had spoken to him. Stop that squeaking and come up and let me in." "If you've the piper, there's the letter-box for you," was the retort. Picke rang the other bell, and told the boy to go to the devil, but this he firmly declined to do, and showered down on the clerk's head a long string of uncomplimentary epithets, which Picke did not deign to notice, and when a footman opened the house door, he assumed a lordly air, and asked, "Is my friend Syselton at home?" at the same time giving his card. r The servant appeared considerably aston- ished at this mode of inquiry, and said he would see, inviting him to take a seat in the hall. The much-injured man grew positively red in the face at the indignity offered him, and was only modified by an apology and an invitation to go into the library, which he I accepted. "Very ignorant, these flunkeys are; don't know a gentleman when they see one. Ah, you ve not been long. I see." Will you come this way, 'sir. j Picke squirmed with delight, and was ushered into the presence of Mr. Syselton. He was sitting at his writing-table, but he got up when he saw who his visitor was, and said, "Mr. HaroJdstones solicitor, I be- lieve." 1'11 pay him out for this; won't he be glad to shake hands with me, soon," and ¡ a^°udJ Messrs. Roche and Roche's confi- dential clerk, Mr. Picke," adding, "that's me. "Did you come, ahem, on business?" Syselton asked. "Important, very important, for your private ear. sir. "Then, may I ask yoii to kindlv let me know what it is at once, as I am very busy to-day. You will pardon my saying so Mr. "Picke." Ah! how foolish of me to forget, Mr. Picke I am really very sorry." He showed it by exhibiting his face a deep red. j. It doesn't matter; I will cut the dialogue, and come to "le crur at once." ^kank you." SyNelton Mr. Picke spread himself out on the sofa, Mr. Picke spread himself out on the sofa, and put on his pinoe-nez. It's important mind you, most important." Yes," Syselton returned, with a trace of jerking in his tones. Most," the clerk affirmed. "Indeed. What is it? permit me to ask. does it refer to me?" Syselton asked, quietly. Mr. Picke laughed gutturally. "Yes; it does refer to you. It concerns you nearly." "I should be glad to know what it is." "\ou shall then. It has some, bearing on the murder of Miss Haroldstone." "Yes." He was absolutely unmoved, bat the flush was still on his cheeks. In fact, I think it accounts for the murder of that unhappy young lady, you seePicke resumed, but Syselton, with an air of con- fusion, said, I admit that I do not under- stand you." Mr. Picke sniffed, rested his head wearily on his hand, and in an uneoncr-rned tone said that he would make it as clear as his poor pcwers would a 1 iow. H-e tlie:i proceeded to set out at great length the facte connected with the first night he had spent under Mr. Haroldstone's roof. When he oame to the recital of the manner in which he had watched him--Sy.selton-cut the arm of the dead girl, he spoke in a low whisper, and was as impressive as it was possible for him to be. His hearer, on the other hand, appeared slightly borer?, and ai the conclusion of the long and harrowing taie baxeJy sac- ceeded in stifling yv-wo. "What prow* have yoa o* this?" My own eyes." >Jr"2 — ?.??, t tMpef ? .L'L.L?t.lJ.I. VU<J-rC'VV I --?- ?- ?- "Never mistaken," saddPicke, in confident tones. Syselton's manner was not re-assuring, but a little threatening, judiciously administered, would be effectual. "Well, what is my answer?" Picke asked. "To what question?"' Syselton ingeniously retorted. Mr. Picke was embarrassed; he looked foolish. What do you propose to do You must think me very troublesome, but I don't understand you; it is very stupid of v ;l1C; would you mind again explaining?"' and Syseiton looked as though striving to conpre- hend the incomprehensible. Willingly. If I went to a police station now you see?" muttered Picke. No, I can't say that I do; what would you do there?" "Tell my story." Syselton assumed an air of utter confusion. Why?'' "To try *o clear up the mystery." Oh! that alters the case; if you can do that, you wiil do a great service to your country," Syseiton droned. But you Picke was indeed aston- ished. t: What. have I to do with it?" You are the man I saw "■ I may have been you have my permission to use my name in any way you think best to the authorities," Syselton said, with an ease of g.ra>ce and manner which his friends would l never have accused him of possessing. I I shct] unless yon induce me not to do so," Pidke declared. "A thousand pounds, slowly, and with emphasis. Mr. Picke, you can't be serious, said; Syselton, gravely. Yes, I a.m, and I implicate you, if I don't have a thousand before to-morrow night." One moment. If I give it to you now, you will not divulge your secret; you will not throw suspicion upon me. If I do not, you denounce me." Inquiry was writ large on every feature of Syselton's face as lie said this more rapidly than usual, and continued, Will you leave me your address, so that I may write to you?" Mr. Picke gave it. congratulating himself inwardly on his success. "You shall hear from me to-night, and now will you excuse me?"' Syselton this time shook hands with his guest, who" knew he would be on his knees in less time than it takes to write, his name." and excused himself for not having offered him any refreshment, "1 am really too busy to remember anything." He rang the bell. Weil, if you must. go, Mr. Picke, good-bve. I shall see you to-morrow." (To be Continued).
