HEARING IN ANIMALS.
HEARING IN ANIMALS. PECULIAR METHODS OF RE- CEIVING SOUND. Insects like grasshoppers, crickets, and lev custs have their ears in strange places—some on the middle of the body, others on the lep. Whatever other uses the creatures may also make of these organs, they are veritable audi* tory organs. In them we find a membrane stretched across a cavity, with an opening to the external air. and within the cavity is a nerve mess developed alt the end of an audi- tory nerve. It would b- hard, indeed, if the chirping cicada—"the cricket on the hearth" —and the querulous katydid could not be heard by their companions. It is taid that those pe"ts in the house-the fties-ean hear by means of some rows of corpuscles on the knobbed threads which represent the hind wings of other insec ts. It is uncertain whether bees can he&r. If not, then all the labour of the old-fashioned beekeeper in beating a tm kettle at swarming time is in vain. Some naturalists who have tried them with rvery kind of sound and noise deny that they can hoar. Others, equally confident, assert, that they are very sensitive to the calls of their queen at least. Soroe of! the mollusks have very remarkable organs fotf hearing. A good instance is the garden slug1. In its neck you would see under a microscope a pair of globules filled with a clear fluid. In these are minute ear stones, which swing to and fro, rotate and start off, first in one direc- tion and then in another, but. in no instano* striking the walls of the cavity. If the glo- bules are ruptured the motions cease. A can- ful angler will not talk while fishing, ro- bably a quirt conversation will do no liar in, but it must be remembered that fishe6 have ea.t'< although sounds from the air may not reach them. One of the odest arrangenmits of all is found in some fishes. The adr bladder sends off fibred which are attached to membrancee stretched across cavities in the skull, and from these membranes the vibrations or sourtds are conveyed to the air bladder- Such is the oase with the perch; while, nick-o etnmgo stall, in the carp little bones aid the transmission of sound. Adders may be "deaf" or hard of hear- ing, but reptiles* are fumishtfcl with ears, .00 among them the crocodile has the rudiment of an outer ear. Birds, as everybody knows, can hear very readily, and the external oavity is easily found if the feathers on the side of the tkuli are raised. Anyone fortunate enough to get holid of an owl may eee a very remarkable opening leading to the drum, but the tuft of feather; which adorns the head on each side in some speciae cannot be regarded as m any way analogous to our own folds of cartilage

Alas was under no promise to his father not to aid Mark. In his fit of rage the Squire had simply forbidden him to do such a thing; but Mr. Markham said he had no right to heed that order. Moreover, his father was now past consulting on the matter—which, for Mark, was a good thing. Hence, on this occasion everything had seemed to work toge- ther for the good of the future exile. About seven months after this, Squire Pilkerton passed peacefully over to the majority. His remains were consigned to the mausoleum in the park, and placed side by side with those of her for whom the dead man had mourned so many years with an almost unholy sorrow, and to whose memory the building had been erected at his orders. About the mournful ceremony there was no ¡ pageantry displayed. No pomp or show or earthly grandeur of any kind held place that funeral rite. It was simplicity even to the verge of austerity. A plain heavy coffin, made simply of thick oaken slabs, fitted with black mountings, and containin, a leaden shell, held the body. Eight men servants carried it from the Priory to the solitary house of the dead with its cordon of trees. Being a man of his father's kind Alan felt the loss as he would not have done had the Squira been of a different temperament than be was. And although the blow ha.d fallen slowly he felt it keenly. Yet he was not the man to jpar&de his sorrow, and1 no wreath .¡ & V" ?. ?-- .? ? 'PL ??. or flower of any kind rested on or went with that, austere, solid-looking receptacle of the i daad. lit this he obeyed the wishes of his parent, pleased himself, and the | funeral was as sombre as it could well be. Alone, and with bared, bowed j head, hi walked next the coffin over the long grass from the house to the mausoleum. ) Some half-dozen distant relations followed him; he had no near one but the exile. The service was read by the vicar of Walton, and the party returned to the Priorv. There Mr. Naish read the will, which was character- istic of its testator. With the exception of the few small-very small—legacies to needy relatives and servants almost ready to follow the giver, the estates, the greater part of which were entailed, went without reserve to Alan. Mark's name was not mentioned. For upwards of 28 years there had been no civilities exchanged between the Priory family and those of houses in the district, When the dead Squire had shut himself up he ha<I shut out the whole world, and people had grown to look on the house simply as the hermitage of a recluse. But. when the remains of the r ad use had been in their resting- place a few days some of the nearer neigh- hours called at the Priory on visits of condo- lence. Yet. whether Alan was averse t-a being intruded on or whatever was the cause he paid no heed to these overtures of socia- bility. He kept the retired, even tenor of his way; and people began to look on liim j as they had done on his father. And, it is very likely that, had it not been for the old tutor, .who still possessed some influence; over him. he would have developed into a rcclose. He had seen no more of the world thM) pn extremely quiet course -at had given »• m- < J ■1" ■ -• him. and he appeared to be iiatiiraliv t learning anything of it. But Mt. Markoam tackled him on the subject of his duty to himself, the position as one of the .aroled gentry, and the necessity of his going into society. Nor did he let the young Squire rest until he agreed to go abroad a 'after he choose rather than at once mix with his he chose rather than at once mix with his neighbours—with himself as a companion. on Mr. Markham hurried the arrangements along, so that three month': after the funeral ?, all was in readiness to start. On the monvng of the chy before the one set aside for leaving the Priory Alan received the following -communication: — 24 Rtreet, AliJln Pilkerton, Usq., London. F.e. Pilkerton Priory, Sept. 10, 18— nr. Wakefield, Yorkshire. Dear Sir.—In accordance with the terms of the hit! I ho'd on you foi .-G200, may I ask for as early a settlement as possible. Yours respectfully, Ruben Jacobs. Not knowing what to ynake of the epistle Alan walked over to Woodbine Cottage with it. But the ex-tutor wis as mystified with it as himself. He could otter no kind of explana- tion, and he advised that it be ignored until they arrived in London the following day; then see about it personally. Which "as' done. On reaching the •metropolis they drove rt once to the' house indicated in the let(■?; alighted, aud took a hasty glance at the | building. It was a large, s<.Tflbi3-boking edifice, and evidently of a good age. The windows on the groiKid floor were all seen I through crossed iron bars, and In one of theia '?-]r.?-?'W':? ? A'ah knocked- there was no bell—and stood back baking ut the dirfcy brass plate on the door bearing the name inscribed in the letter. In a few tninutes the doov opened and revealed a hook-nosed, black-haired individual, in petti- coats none to clean. "Vat vash you vant, bleave said she. "Mr. Jacobs," said Alan. "Is lie in?'" looking at the woman with disgust. "Yesh, he vash in. Vat vash you vant? Ish it peeshness f' "Yes," shortly. "Vill you blease shtep !n ?'' He tTId so. Mr. Jfurkham followed. They were shown into the gloomy, dust-ridden room that served as an office, told to wait, and left to do 1,'(1. But they were not kept long in suspense. A man entered, and the gently natured ex- tufcor shuddered, while Alan looked volumes of superior disgust. The man's ca-st of fea- tures were as a finger-post with the word Jew in capital letters. Hut .-t was not that that jarred on his visitors. It was the impulsive- ness of the man as a whole. He appeared to be about 60 years of age. On each side of his thin beak-like nose glittered a dark, ferrety eye that had grown yto seem small through a habit of keeping them half veiled. Over them hung two black, bristling brows. The month was a mere split curved' down- wards at the corners. His gait was a glide; a s;iitflie. He was tall, and j ■ thin, nnd much i-omul-shouldered. His garb was a dirty, greasy dre^mg-cown and smok- iug cap, and when ha entered he was rubbing j foj».»t!t«r fc-.vo bviiy, oily-looking, talon-l-ike! liaad'^i. Will you be good enough to tell me the meaii ng of this?"' he asked, tendering the letter he had received. "I«h not de meaningphlain, my dear Fhi" said the Jew. with a smile that Mephisto- plieles might have envied him the power 01 giving, after running his eye over the missive, "It is plain as far as the letter goes." sc'-d Alan. But you have no bill on Alan Pilker- ton. He never gave a biil to anyone in bis life." Ach! Mein Gott; and vat you shay negxt?-' the suavity and smile all gone I sav lie has not given you or any other man a bill." Shtay— Va^t, vone minute!" He shuffled arross to a safe in a corner, opened it, and glided back with some papers. Selecting one from the bundle he presented it to Alan, saying, "und vat you shay to dis 1" Alan took the document, examined it, and found it was a promissory note in his name for B200 at 50 per cent. per annum, payable to Reuben Jacobs at his house, Street, London, three months after the death of Alan, present Squire of Pilkerton. and bore the date of June 23rd, two years and a-half before this. Alan raised his head. His eyes met those of the Jew which had been watching him keenly all the while. '0 Ve:l. uud ish dot not phi am enof?" "Yes—in a way," said Alan. "Veil, vot more Stay. My memory ish sho padd," with a slow imperturbability that. would not be ruffled. But if I had borrowed this money you would' not have forgotten mo." "Put, my dear shir-" Stay Where was the money borrowed and the bill .made out?" "Here in dish offish." What kind of person was it who borrovre:! -it?" "He vash a vair vacohed shentleman vid lightish hair und dark eyesh." Was he tall or short ?" "He v.-ish neider. He vash middling: und vash leedle shtoudt und slitrong looking." "Was he an old man, or a voting one?" He sheemed apout dwenty-four or fire." Alan was satisfied, and turning to Mr. sfarkham he said in a whisper, f Can you see the meaning of this ?" No. my dear boy. I utterly fail to under- I stand it. What do you think of it?" "I think," in a low passionate voice, "that Mark has forged my name. By the descrip- tion this vulture gives and the date of the bill the thing was done just alter he left the Priory." "Dear me! surely not," said Mr. Mark- bam. But what else on earth can it be I It must fa him. The handwriting is his. The description is Irs. And I am going to Naish at once." Still it may not be him. A!an. sadly and kindly. "It is. I'm as fully persuaded as if I had seen him do it— The forger, the cheat ( bitterly. "Come, let us get away from this den. Here," returning the bill to the Hebrew who had watched them narrowly, "I will see about this." Put vat doesh all dish mean, shentlemen. I va« not ondersfhandt dish peeshness." "It means this— I am Alan Pilkerton, and was never in this place before to-day!" with a burst of anger. "Ach! mein Gott in I-Timmel Den I vash being robbed, und I lesesh mine monesh. Und I gief you all dish dime undil your faver vash dead und desheotlv puried before I ashk for mine monesh. Oh, m;ne Gott, mine; Gott!" Well, I cannot help you," turning to the door. Put, me ghentlemer. pleash, shall I loesh mine monesh?" "I don't' knew, I tell you. Wait and see." And leaving the Hebrew this mite of con- solation, Alan gained the open air, followed by Mr. Markham. Both of them were infi- nitely relieved to be out of that awful office and presence. The young Squire drove at once to the family iawyer in Lincoln's Inn, told him of the matter, and ordered Mark's allowance to fa stopped by telegram. All the solicihr's advice and the old ex-tutor's pleading were of no avuil i to soften matters. He would hear no word in extenuation of tfhe guilt, if guilt it was, and he was sure of it. He would not allow Mr. Naish to write to Mark for an explana- tion. No. Stop the alllowance, as he bad said, be telegram; and let him suffer as he deserved. The lawyed did as he was bidden—with the saving clause that he would write by the next mail. He hoped in the meantime that Alan would take a better view of the affair. But his hope was not fulfilled. Two days later the young Squire, accompanied by Mr. Mark- ham, left London for the south of Italy, after having given Mr. Nais'h instructions to settle with the Hebrew in whatever manner he thought was beso for the keeping of the matter quiet. Thus when he did write he could only confirm the telegram, and he thought it t'he wisest and most charitable plan to give no reason for the action. (To be Continued).
