HEARING IX ANIMALS.
HEARING IX ANIMALS. PECULIAR METHODS OF BE- CEIVING SOUND. Insects like grasshoppers crickets, and lo- custs have .their ears in strange places—some on the middle of the body, others on the leps. Whatever other uses the creatures may also make of these organs, they are veritable audi- tory organs. In them we find a membrane stretched across a cavity, with an opening to tho external air. and within the cavity is a nerve mess developed at the end of en audi- tory nerve. It would be hard, indeed, if the chirping cicada—"the cricket on the hearth" —and the querulous katydid could not be heard by their eompa-nions. It is taid that those pests in the house—the flies—can hear by meana of some rows of corpuscles on the knobbed threads which represent the hind wings of other injects. It is uncertain whether bee- CSLP hear. If not., then all the labour of the old-fashioned beekeeper in beating a tm kettle it swarming time is in vain. Some naturalists who have tried them with evtrv kind of sound and noise deny that they can hear. Others, equally confident, ascsert that they are very sensitive to the ('aJls of their queen at least. Some of the mollusks have very remarkable organs for hearing. A good instance is the garden slug. In its neck you would see under a microscope a pair of globules filled with a clear fluid. In these are minute ear stones, which swing to •ind fro, rotate and start off, first in one direo. tior. and then in another, but in no instance striking the walls of the cavity. If tite glo* bules are ruptured the motions cease. A care- ful angler will not talk while fishing. ro- bably a quiet conversation will do no harm, but it must he remembered that fishes have ears,; although sound* from the a.ir may not reach them. Ojie of the odect arrangements of all is fennd in some fishes. The air bladder sende off fibres which are attached to membnuiofle stretched across cavities in the skull, and from these membranes the vibrations of sound., are convoyed to the air bladder- Such is the case with the perch'. while, lnoKv strai^gc stall, in the carp little bones aid the transmission of sound. Adders may be "deal" or hard of hear- ing, but rept.ileo' are fuiMiish<*d with ears, and among them the crocodile has the rudiment of an outer ear. Birds, as everybody knows, can hear very readily, and the external cavity in ea-ilv found if the feathers, on the side of the ilnill are raised. Anyone fortunate enough to get hold of an owl may see a very remarkable opening leading to the drum, but the tuft of feather =. which adorns the head on each side in some spsciss cannot be regarded as in any wsy analogous to our own folds of cartilage.

In his fit of rage the Squire had simply forbidden him to do such a thing; but Mr. Markham said he had no right to heed that order. Moreover, his father was now past consulting on the matter—which, for Mark, was a good thing. Hence, on this occasion everything had seemed to work toge- ther for the good of the future exile. About seven mouths after this, Squire Pilkerton passed peacefully over to the majority. His remains were consigned to the mausoleum in the park, and placed side by side with those of her for whom the dead man had mourned so many years with an almost unholy sorrow, and to whose memory the building had been erected at his orders. About the mournful ceremony there was no pageantry displayed. No pomp or show or earthly grandeur of any kind held place in that funeral rite. Tf was simplicity even to the verge of austerity. A plain heavy coffin, made simply of thick oaken slabs, fitted with black mountings, and containing a leaden shell, beld the body. Eight men servants carried it from the Priory to the solitary house of the dead with its cordon of trees. Being & man of his father's kind Alan felt the loss as he would not have done had the Squire been of a different temperament than he was. And although the blow had fallen slowly he felt it keenly. Yet he was not the iiiau to parade his sorrow., aud no wreath or flower of any kind rested on or went with that austere, solid-looking receptacle of the dead. Ia this he obeyed the wishes of his parent, pleased himself, and the funeral was as sombre as it could well be. Alone, and with bared, bowed head, he walked next the coffin over the long grass from the house to the mausoleum. Some half-dozen distant relations followed him he had no near one but the exile. The service was read by the vicar of Walton, and the party returned to the Priory. There Mr. Naisli read the will, which was character- istic of its testator. With the exception of the few small—very small—legacies to needy relatives and servants almost ready to follow the giver, the estates, the greater part of which were entailed, went without reserve to Alan. Mark's name was not mentioned. For upwards of 28 years there had been no civilities exchanged between the Priory family and those of houses in the district. When the dead Squire had shut himself up he hatf shut out the whole world, and people had grown to lootc on the house Simply as the hermitage of a recluse. But when the remains of the recluse had been in their resting- place a few days some of the nearer neigh- bours called at the Priory on visits of condo- lence. Yet, whether Alan was averse to being intruded on or whatever was the cause he paid no heed to these overtures of socia- bility. He kept the retired, even tenor of his way; and people began to look on him as they had done on his father. And it is very likely that, had it not been for the old tutor, who still possessed some influence over him, he would have developed into a recluse. He had seen no more of the world than an extremely auiet course at college had aif-rau him, and he appeared to be naturally against I learning anything of it. But Mx. MaTkhapi tackled him on the subject of his duty to himself, the position as one of the landed gentry, and the necessity of his going into society. Nor did he let the young Squire rest until he agreed to go abroad a matter I he choose rather than at once mix with his he chose rather than at once mix with his neighbours—with himself as a companion. on Mr. Markham hurried the arrangements along, so that three months after the funeral all was in readiness to start. On the morning of the day before the one set aside for leaving the Priory Alan received the following communication:- 24 Street, Alan Pilkerton, Esq., London, E.C. Pilkerton Priory, Sept. 10, 18— nr. Wakefield, Yorkshire. Dear Sir.—In accordance with the terms of the bi1l I hold on you for JB200, may I ask for as early a settlement as possible. Yours respectfully, Ruben Jacobs. Not knowing what to make of the epistle Alan walked over to Woodbsne Cottage with it. But the ex-tutor was as mystified with it as himself. He could offer no kind of explana- tion, and he advised that it be ignored until they arrived in London the following day; then see about it personally. Which was done. On reaching the metropolis they drove at once to the house indicated in the letter. alighted, and took a hasty glance at the building. It was a large, sombre-looking edifice, and evidently of a good age. The windows on the ground floor were all g&m through crossed iron bars, a* ) in OHO of &LISSS through crossed iron bars, p. ) in OHO of &LISSS was a dingy wire blind with the word Office" in very much faded gilt. Alan knocked—there wa.s no bell—and stood back looking at the dirty brass plate on the door bearing the name inscribed in the letter. In a few minutes the door opened and revealed a hook-nosed, black-haired individual, in petti- coats none to clean. "Vat vash you vant, blease?" said she. "Mr. Jacobs," said Alan. "Is he in?'" looking at the woman Wiith disgust. Yesli, he vash in. Va.t vash you vant? Ish it peeshness 7" "Yes," shortly. Fill you blease shtep in ?'* He did so. Mr. Markham followed. They were shown into the gloomy, dust-ridden room that served as an office, told to wait, and left to do so. But they were not kept; long in suspensa. A man entered, and the gently natured ex- tutor shuddered, while Alan looked volumes of superior disgust. The man's cast of fea- tures were as a finger-post with the word Jew in capital letters. But it was not that that jarred on his visitors. It was the repulsive- ness of the man as a whole. He appeared to be about 60 years of age. On each side of his thin beak-like nose glittered a dark. ferrety eye that had grown to seem small through a habit of keeping them half veiled. Over them hung two black, bristling brows. The mouth was a mere split curved1 down- wards at the corners. His gait was a glide; a soft, noiseless shuffle. He was tall, and thin, and much round-shouldered. His garb was a dirty, greasy dressing-gown and smok- ing cap, and when he entered he was rubbing to get he i two bony, oily-looking, talon-like hands. I Goot morning shentlemen," with a suavity I and politeness that could scarcely be outdone and seemed to resemble the polite invitation of a vulture to come and have his bones picked. "WriIl you be good enough to tell me the 'meaning of this?'' he asked, tendering the letter he had received. "Ish not de meaning phlain, my dear shir?" said the Jew, with a smile that Mephisto- plieles might have envied him the power 11)1 giving, after running his eye over the missive. It Is plain as far as the letter goes." sa;d Alan. But you have no bill on Alan Pilker- ton. He never gave a bill to anyone in his life." "Ach! Mein Gotfc; and vat you shay negxt?" the suavity and smile all gone I say he has not given you or any other man a bill." Shtav- Vait Tone minute I" He shuffled across to a safe in a corner, opened it. 1 and glided back with some papers. Selecting one from the bundle he presented it to Alan, saying, und vat you shay to dis ?" Alan took the document, examined it, and found it was a promissory note in his name for B200 at 50 per cent. per annum, payable to Reuben Jacobs at his house, Street, London, three months after the death of Alan, present Squire of Pilkerton, and bore the date of June 23rd, two years and a-half before this. Alan raised his head. His eyes met those of the Jew which had been watching him keenly all the wliile. Vell, ood ish dot not phlain enof?" "Yes—in a way," said Alan. Veil, vot more-" Stay. Have you seen me before to-day Vy, no. Not to my recollection. Put I haf sho many young shentlemen gome to mine offish dot I gannot gkeep dem all in my mind'sh eye," with another oily smile. "Cannot you remember a fa,ce ?—Have you ever seen me before 1" "Veil no— I dink'st not." "Y ou think' not. Say, have you seen me before ?" I vould not shwear. My memory i,-ob sho padd," with a slow imperturbability that would not be ruffled. But if I had borrowed this money you would not have forgotten arte." "Put, mv dear shir—" Stay! Where was the money borrowed and the bill made out?" "Here in dish offish." What kind of person was it who borrowed it?" He vasli a yair va-oehed shentleman vid lightish hair und dark eyesh." Was he tall or short ?" "He vash neider. He vash middling: uRd vasb leedle shtoudt und shtrong looking." "Was he an old man, or a young one?" "He sheemod apout dwentv-four or five." Alan was satisfied, and turning to Mr. Markham he said in a whisper, 3 "Can you see the meaning of this?" No, my dear boy. I utterly fail to under- stand it. What do you think of it?" "I think," in a low pa.ssiona,te voice, "that Mark has forged my name. By the descrip- tion this vulture gives and the date of the bill the thing was done just after he 'left the Priory." "Dear me! surely not," said Mr. Mark- ham. I But what else on earth can it be! It -?- wist bo him. The handwriting is his. The description is his. And I am going to Naish at once." Still it may not be him, Alan," sadly and kindly. It is. fro aq fully persuaded as if I had I seen him do it- The forger, the cheat!" j- bitterly. "Come, let us get away from tKs den. Here," returning the bill to the Hebrew who had watched them narrowly, "I will see a.bout this." Put vat doesh all dish mean, shentlemen. I vas not onderstbandt dish peeshness." "It means this— I am Alan Pilkerton, and was never in this place before to-day!" with a burst of anger. "Ach! mein Gott in Himmel' Den I vash being robbed, und' I losesh mine monesh. Und I gief you all dish dime undil your faver vash dead und deshently puried before I ashk for mine monesh. Oh, mine Gott, mine Gatt "Well, I cannot help you," turning to the door. "Put, tdell me ghentlem?n, pleash, shall I loesh mine monesh?" "I don't' knew, I tell you. Wait and see." And leaving the Hebrew this mite of con- so lotion, Alan gained the open a-ir. followed by Mr. Markham. Both of them were infi- nitelv relieved to be out of that awful office and presence. The young Sqmre drove at once to the] family lawyer in Lincoln's Inn. told him of the bnatter, and ordered Mark's allowance to be stopped by telegram. All the solicitor's advice and the old ex-tutor's pleading were of no avail to soften matters. He would hear no word in extenuation of the guilt, if guilt it was, and he was sure of it. He would not allow Mr. Naish to write to Mark for an explana- tion. No. Stop the allowance, as he had said, be telegram; aud let him suffer as he deserved. The lawyed did1 as be was bidden—with the saving clause that he would write by the next mail. He hoped in the meantime that Alan would take a better view of the affair. But his hope was not fulfilled. Two days later the young Squire, accompanied by Mr. Ma.rk- ham, left London for the south of Italy, after having given Mr. Naisb instructions to settle with the Hebrew in whatever manner he thought was best for the keeping of the matter quiet. Thus when ho did write lie could only confirm the telegram, and he thought it the wisest and most charitable plan to give no reason for the action. (To be Continued). i
