BALFOUR IN PRISON.
BALFOUR IN PRISON. CONVEYED THERE IN COMPANY WITH FEMALE PRISONERS. A correspondent states that a peculiar circum stance in connection with thy removal of Jabes Balfour from Holloway to Wormwood Serubbs, after sentence had been passed on him, WM his conveyance there in the ordinary prison van, which at the time contained several female prisoners, who were being transferred to tha latter prison. This was done to avoid the hostile' demonstration which would probably have occurred had he been remove^ in the cab, which the prison authorities as a ruae had driven into the courtyard. JJi* eafe custody was deemed so import-ant that a telegram was for- warded to tl)e Prison BagtrU announcing his arrival a t Wormwood Scrubb6 Prison. Since hi I incarceration he has been taught- the art of making mailbags, and has proved an apt pupil. He lias been visited by the- ladies who shared I his voluutarv exile at Salta, and lias also had. frequent interviews with the counsel who defended him at the recent 'trial at the Central Criminal Court. A rule nisi 1 laving been .r granted for a new trial, he is permitted to devote Lan-stilf almost entirely to the work of preparing h1* case, respecting which he WM visited by his counsel on Saturday last.

A LEGAL M U R D E R
A LEGAL M U R D E R BEING THE STORY OF A SOUL'S EVOLUTION. "By NOEL NOLAN, Author of "Tales of Cardiff," "A Child of Nature," &c., &0. CHAPTER VII. (Continued). Having re-settled himself, he set to work again to find employment. Week followed week, and his money be- came mil—"his" money? He had none. Then his clothes and jewellery—not a large itock of the latter-began to find a resting- place on the shelves or in the safe of a. neighbouring man of business—all done up in neat, separate bundles. By this means, and an occasional small job, he sucoeeded in getting two meals one day and four the nest, I and paying his weekly lodgings. Every now and then his temper got the better of his reason, and he cursed afresh to his heart's content; then saw the folly of his doing so and became moody and silent and sullen. Another thing, he disoovered some places where gambling was carried on. And at times, when sick and heart weary with trying to e&rn an honest living, he repaired to one of them and either lost his few shillings and had to pawn some thing to obtain money for his breakfast, or he won a £ 1 or so and then kept away until one thing or another seemed to force him there again. He did not go from choice. He had grown to somewhat hate the cards, and in a sense to be afraid of them. He 'hated to take them in his hands, j They seemed to fill him with dread whenever he touched them after a spell away from the tables. He feared anyone seeing him play. Hence, he only went there when he felt devilish. It was a calm, clear, and beautiful evening. Nature seemed in a good huciour with her- Mlf, and she smiled with the happy peaceful- of a well-Sj^ent life coaxing its close. Meredith was sitting in his room and ponder- ing on his state and condtion. During the past two weeks fortune had frowned on him even blacker than ever. Work, beyond a casual day or two on the wharves, he could not get; and of late even that had been scantier than usual. Of pawnable articles he had no more, and he was well-nigh at his wits' end' to know how to live. Leaving the chair he went over to the win- dow and looked out. III a tree opposite were I two birds, male and female. They hopped about from twig to twig, giving vent to a few rich notes as they went from perch to perch. Presently they stopped, and the male began his evensong in a low, tremulous key. Soon the bars of melody grew stronger. Stave after stave he poured out until it seemed as if his very throat would burst from the strain. The alt almost quivered! with the richness of the vocal music. It rang in Meredith's ears and for the moment made him forget the horrible hideousness of his tierce hand-to- mouth struggle for a living. The hen bird perched by her mate as if proud of his song, and silently bidding the whole world to hearken to a strain so sweet. The harrassed, Nemesis-hunted ma.n looked on and listened. While the song lasted he thought of nothing else. It wa.s sweet-it was more than sweet to stand there and watch that beautiful picture of ideal happiness—the little, fea- thered wife standing by in meak, mute praise while her husband made the evening air ring with his wordless love song ere they retired together for the night. It was sweet to drink in that glorious melody. It crushed out the bitter reproaches, the fierce resentment; it turned the gall into honey, and the wormwood I Leaving the chair he went over to the window and looked out." I into wine. Whiie it lasted the mad impo- tence against the what-had-been, the vehe- I ment hunger for the might-have-been—the I passion, and the devil died out of him. But it ended. and be fpll back to hIS cogitations. He had but a shilling in the wlioie world. His hands were thrust deep in his trousers pockets one was toying with the coin. Stsu> ation was staring him in the face, and all its harrowing details passed like a repulsive panorama before his mental eye. He was still looking through the wiudot v but he saw neither tree, nor anything else. He was wondering whether he would pull through again, or <go under tbis time. There was plenty of room, be thought, outside the wharves. He took the shilling from his pocket, and looked at it as it lay on his fingers. D-n you he muttered. You cursed ever needful! Man's last and greatest curse -the prime germ of every other. The first badge of civilisation, and the murderer of all peace. You little, white devil I-the price of one small meal. Then-Hey. presto starvation, or"-be paused and shuddered— unless there comes a change. A paltry bit of metal blocking the hole in life's partition wall; and when I've knocked you out per- haps I shall have to crawl through—hunger the first halting plate, and a grave the next. Would to God I could find a country where there is none. "raising his eyes to. the window again. "I've no love for it," he resumed, returning the shilling to his pocket. I don't' value it one iota bevond what it will bring we. Yet I can't live with- out it. He turned away and sat down again. An hour passed, and the shadows began to grow thick. He had spent the time in miser- able brooding, and wondering what to do. He got up, put on his hat. and went out. During the next hour be paced the streets; hither, thither, wherever inclination led him. He grew hungry. He had eaten nothing since mid-day. He was afraid to break into his shilling, for fear it should all go before he got any more. He lit his pipe to take off the edge of his appetite, and walked about for another half-hour. Then he thought he would go back to Woolloomooloo and his lodgings. I On his way there he passed the door of one of the gambling dens he knew of. For a moment he paused-irresolute whether to go I in and risk his shilling, or keep it and hope foe work on the morrow.. « He sauntered on another half-a-dozen yards; then stopped again. The devil at his elbow whispered, Go, go in, you fool, aud get something for your supper, and dinner to-morrow! You may not get work; then you wul have to spend your shilling, and after that you can't get more until you do get work. And starv- ing will soon make you so that work will be impossible. You have to Eve-go in, you fool, and risk it I" But there was something else—there was that dread of the cards at work; that fear of their baneful influence over him at such times as this, iimes when he staked his all, and the fiend of necessity said—"you must win." There was that horror of being seen playing on such occasions as the present. And he stood in doubt. He wan- dered a. few paces further then paused again. This time by a cookshop window. There were some cut joints, a ham, and some pas- trv on the other side of the glass. His gaze rested on them.. They were like magnets attracting needles. His hunger grew ravenous at the sight of the food. He made a step towards the door, his hand in his pocket and the coin between his thumb and finger. He stopped. The devii was at him again, and wanting to know why he was going to spend that shilling when he could' get some more with it, and then go without either money or food. He was a fool, the tempter said; a most arrant fool, and he deserved to go hungry. Here he had the opportunity of providing himself with the means of living for the next few days, at any rate, and' he was about to throw it away. Pooh you dolt!" said the devil, in disgust. He turned aside, and walked slowly back. When he reached the door again he halted and looked at it. He was still undecided. While he stood thus two men passed out, and for a minute the door was open. The place gaped him a welcome, and looked as if it would like to draw him in. There was a weak moment. Then the door closed, and closed him in. When oH'je inside he was soon at the tables. After the first game his fear passed away. He had then something in hand to go on with if fortune did not favour him. But on that night the fickle goddess was kind to him. When midnight drew near and the party he had joined broke up, he was several pounds -richer than when he entered. > On his way to the outlet he paused by a table where" Thnee-ca.rd Loo" was being played by four men. While he stood watching the game one of the players announced his immediate intention of quit- ting- One of the remaining three- looked up and asked if some one else would take the vacant place. There were several onlookers, but none offered until Meredith said he would. The others agreed, and he sat down. The game had gone on without interrup- tion for some little time, when suddenly the man opposite Meredith sprang to his feet and exclaimed. You're c-heating f "It's a lie! I'm not" said he, also leaping to his feet. "You are yelled the other. "You've got two aces of hearts there you took the first trick with one, and now you're trying to take this with the other Instantly one of the other players grabbed Meredith's cards, who said, '"There isn't two aces of hearts there. It's one heart and one diamond. And if there is they were dealt to me!" Like a flash the room was in an uproar. There were only a few men left, but every one crowded around, eager to see and hear, and fired with the cry of A cheat!" The man who picked up the candis examined them. There were two aces of hearts. Then he counted them. All the cards in play were then counted, and then the pack, and the numVi was correct. How bad the -?- -=. -?- mistake been made? One thing in his favour -it was somewhat dark behind him, and he had some difficulty in distinguishing the spots on the cards. He pointed this out. He was requested to stand aside. A man struck a match and looked on his chair-- nothing; then ou the floor-there was a card, face downwards. It was grabbed up, and proved to be the knave of clubs. Again the pack was examined. That card was missing. Inference, it had been dropped and an ace of hearts substituted. Meredith proclaimed his innocence. One of the players swore it was not the man who left; he knew him, he said. and he knew he was not a cheat. Meredith asked him if he thought he (the speaker) had introduced the other ace. "Yes, you have!" cried the man In passion. And Meredith struck out, and the man went down and remained there. He had played fair this time, anyhow, he said to himself; and the thought nerved him. Moreover, he knew that unless he either proved his innocence beyond doubt, or took the bull by the horns and forced it backii-ards in a sense, the result would be a very severe mauling indeed. He knew per- fectly well what kind of men lie had to deal with, and that the initiative often meant the mastership. I As the man fell, Merdeith stood back and watched the others, his fists clenched, his eyo. blazing, and his lips compressed. His late occasional manual labour had served as good exercise for his muscles, and he had never been a boy to play with in the matter of hard knocks. He stood his guard, wondering what would be the next move. Two or three looked at him anything but kindly. Then they reflected lie might be innocent. The other man was as likely to have done it as he. Some raised the other man up, and helped to revive him. He was merely stunned. Meredith, seeing their wavering helped to revive him. He was merely l stunned. Meredith, seeing their wavering manner, asked if they still doubted him. There was a moment's silence. Then the question was discussed quietly, and left in about the same condition. He waited until the man had thoroughly I regained his senses. Then he left the place, and purchased something for his supper at a midnight coffee-house, and began to walje I to Woollooniooloo. I He was thoughtful. He had need to be. It had been a narrow shave. Many a man had had his neck broken, or got a knock he had never forgotten, or ever again remem- bered, on a less suspicious occasion than this had been. He thanked his lucky stars that matters had turned out so well for him. A little before he reached his lodgings he lifted his head, looked at the full. bright moon, and said, "Yes; I'll get out of this— get away up country. Others have done well there; and why not I? They had no more hardships to face than I have done here, I'll swear. And I'll try it." And thus forming new plans be reached his place of abode, had some supper, and retired. The narrow squeak was soon to bear its fruit. • To be continued.)
