FAST TRAIN TO LONDON-
FAST TRAIN TO LONDON- FROM NEWPORT TO PADDING- TON WITHOUT A STOPPAGE. The accelerated service of the Great Wes- tern Railway Company has started! under very successful auspices. On Wednesday morning the fast train leaving Swansea at 8.30 and Cardiff at 9.58 started on its journev, in the presence of a number of the company s leading officials. On board the train were Mr. Allen, the superintendent of the line, and Mr. Wright, the locomotive superintendent of the South Wales district. The time from Cardiff to Newport was effected in sixteen minutes, the arrival of the train being witnessed by a con- siderable crowd, who had collected to witness this new departure in railway management. The run from Newport to Paddington was made without a stoppage. Bath was passed at 11.8, Swindon at 11.45, the passage through the Severn Tunnel occupying the exceptionally short time of five minutes. The tickets are collected en route, this being possible and con- venient in a corridor train. The engine was one of a very powerful type manufactured by the company at Swindon. Its size may be esti- mated by the fact that in the tender can be stored 3,000 gallons of water. Thit supply is supplemented by the new water-feeding troughs laid down by the -company in the neighbourhood of Goring for the purpose of enabling engines to obtain water while travel- ling at full speed. This is the only alteration made by the company in its plant for the pur- poses of the express service. The system of water supply appears to have been in operation on the London and North Western Railway for many years, but haa not hitherto been adopted by the Great Western Railway. It is r.1l interesting fact that the system was first suggested to the engineer of the London and North Western Railway Company by observing, when boating, that if the hand is placed in the water in the form of a scoop. and the boat propelled at a considerable speed, the water is forced up the sleeve of the person making the experiment. The result was the trough system, without which the long runs of our railway companies would be impossible. The engines are fitted with a scoop attached to a tube connected with the water tank, the scoop and tube operating as the hand and sleeve act in the boating experiment The run from Newport to London is the longest made on any English railway. The average speed between Newport and Paddington on the tra.;n above referred to is 48 miles per hour, although the speed often attained is over 60. A LEGITIMATE COMPLAINT. A Cardiff gentleman complains thart the Great Western Railway have made no provi- sion for dining on board this fast train, and pointed out the fact that on other lines where long-distance trains are run a dining saloon is always attached.

"PEGGY, PEGGY."
"PEGGY, PEGGY." MlIf. DAtNtREL OWEN NOW FINDS THE 11140ST CHORD." Some time ago there appeared in the "Wes- tern Mail" an account of the discovery by Mr. Daniel Owen, of A.&h Hall, of an interesting Welsh song which he had heard sung in his younger days in the Vale of Glamorgan. The song, which was composed by Thomas Wil- liams, Bethesda 'r Fro, a Nonconformist preacher and a poet and hvmniet well known in Wales, was translated into English by the Vicar of Llanover, and both the original and the translation appeared in the "Western Mail." Mr. Daniel Owen was then, naturally, anxious to find a copy of the music to which the song was set, and, a wish 'having been published to that effect, the Squire of Ash Hall one day j' received from Miss Purvis, 7, Glazebury-road, West Kensington, a letter enolosing the very thing he was in quest of. Miss Purvis said: "Looking through the 'Weekly Mail' of Novem- ber 9, my mother noticed that 'Young Musician' wished to obtain the melody of the old Welsh air, 'Peggy, Peggy,' and has requested me to jot it down, which I have done at her dicta- tion. She remembers it sung by her mother nearly fiftv years ago." Miss Purvis, we may add, was at one time a pupil of Madame Clara Novello Davies. Mr. Daniel Owen VI; as. of course, delighted to receive the melody, and at once communi- cated with Dr. Joseph Parry with a view to have a pianoforte accompaniment composed. The doctor very readily complied, and the song is now published in its complete form. Sub- joined we give the first two and the last two stanzas of the English version: — Peggy, Peggy, tell me, tell me, from thy now far distant home, Why thou didst from old Bethesda o'er the billows choose to roam? Didet thou think beyond th' Atlantic earthly pleasure thou would'st find? Or some other friends and better than the ones thou'st left behind? -?_ Wherefore hast thou us forsaken when no cause thou could'st assign ? Wherefore bid us lasting farewell ere thyself to death resign? Little thought I dead—though living—thou would' eIt be to me one day, Man proposes, God disposes, step by dtep his ordered way! < When my voice shall on the breezes reach thino ears o'er distant seas, Thou wilt know the voice that often in Bethesda did thee please; And, with deep-drawn sigh upheaving, while thy 1 "s in torrents flow, 1, methiriks can hear thee saying, How I wish I were there now Be content. Abide thou yonder: here my dwell- ing-place shall be, Till I'm summoned for the voyage o'er a far more distant sea; I expect again to meet thee safe on that eternal shore, Not with weeping as we parted, but with glad- ness evermore! The following is a. copy of the music, of which Dr. Parry writes: —" The accompaniment is in the true spirit of the old melody, which is thoroughly Cymroaidd, aiid is very quaint and pretty —

One Blow Killed Him FELL AND HIS SKULL WAS FRACTURED. John Kane's Interference with a Mas Who Was Courting Costa Him His Life. Robert Gair, of Brookly.i, America, Is 6 lithographic printer and manufacturer cf I)aiier boxes. John Kane was employed by him M sliipping clerk and had worked for him for <15 years. Kane finished his duties at half-pa*! nine on Monday. He walked down the office step? into Washington-street. On the steps leading to another door of the factory, about twenty feet away, Kane saw sitting a man and woman. The streets near the riv«r a"8 favourite resorts for Brooklyn lovers in sum- mer, and it was warm enough to spark iu tkv street on that night. Kane walked over and said to the man: — "What are you doing here?"' "You mind your own business," retorted the strangei. Flanagan, a watchman, coming up tc go 08 duty heard that. "Why don't you drive these loungers away, Flanagan?" asked Kane. "Get o"t of here I" exclaimed the bold Flanagan. For answer the stranger, whom Flanagan describes as a tall. strongly built man, jumped to his feet, and struck Flanagan between the eyes. Flanagan turned and ran for his club in the factory. As he ran he looked over his shoulder, and saw the big fellow strike Kane, who was much smaller. He hit him a power- ful blow. Kane fell backwards, and did not move. Flanagan ran the faster for his olub. John 0 Bnen is also a watchman. Ae Ka.ne fell O'Brien says the woman who was sitting on the stops jumped1 up and cried: "For God's sake, T0111, let's get away from lie re!" Then she and the fellow quickly ran down the street and disappeared. Flanagan returned with his club. He and O'Brien went looking for a policeman, and soon found Patrolman Connolly. Kane was unconscious, and the three carried him into the office. Ambulance Surgeon M'Cullough took the still unconscious man to the hospital. They put Kane on the operating table, but before the surgeons could do anything for him he dded. The base of his skull had been frac- tured against the pavement. Kane was 40 years old. He leaves a widow and three chil- dren, the oldest a girl of eighteen. Mr. Gair says Kane was a peaceful, hard-working man. To the police Robert, Gair, junior, strongly condemned Flanagan's conduct. The Brook- lyn police are on their mettle, determined tQ: catch the man who struck Kane.
ATHLETE IN TROUBLE
ATHLETE IN TROUBLE- ALIiEGED ASSAULT IN A RAIL- WAY CARRIAGE. At the adjourned Cheshire Quarter Seseionsi at Knutsfccd on Wednesday afternoon amcnt? the cases on the calendar was that m which. Edward Poole, the well-known Swansea athleto, was chained with having indecently assaulted a domestio servant named Harriet Lloyd at Stockport on December 9. Mr. Trevor Lloyd prosecuted, and Mr. Colt Williams defended. -The prosecution tried to prove that prisoner had accompanied the Rugby football team, of which he was hon. treasurer, from Swansea, and when arriving at Stookport he had got out and entered a carriage in which prosecutrix wal seated, alone, and had there and then inde- cently assaulted her.—This Poole stoutly denied. He swore that, although entering the carriage abruptly because the train had already been fe't in motion., he at once apologised to Miss Lloyd, but she went to the windoiw and commenced shouting for help. He (witness) was quite dumbfounded by her conduct, as he had done absolutely nothing to cause any alarm.—Witnesses were called who gave pri- soner a good character, while it was also proved that on the night in question he was perfectly sober. He had 'been for ten years well known as an amateur runner and football player, and had had the reputation of being a most respect- able man in Swansea.—The jury, after delibe- rating half an hour in private, found prisoner not guilty, and he was discharged.

LADY MANS'EL.
LADY MANS'EL. Lady Mansel, who is now performing at the Empire M 'sio-hall, Swansea, has been inter- viewed by pressmen there on the subject of her husband's connection with Swansea. Lady Mansel's late husband, Sir Richard Mansel, WM the owner of the Manselton Estates, where the Swansea Racecourse was situated. The connection of the convict solicitor Norton with the Manselton Estate evidently aroused little lady's deepest indignation. She said Norton had treated her husband in a moft shameful way when he lived, and when he died he tried to dispute his will. In order to fight him she had mortgaged, as she believed, her annuity of JE500 a year, but it turned out to be a sale, and the annuity was lost to her.
