OLD AGE PENSIONS- XR. SPICEB, M.P., ADDRESSES NEWPORT ODDPEL.LOWS. Mr. AJbert Spioer. M.P.. was on Tuesday evening initiated a bon member of the Star of Freedom Lodge of the Manchester Unity of OddfeJlows at the Newbridge Ion. Bridge- street, Newport, and subsequently addressed, a large number of members of the lodge and Oddfellows of the town generally on the question of old age pensions. He ran over the various schemes which had been sug- gested to the country to meet the growing need for such pensions. Personally, he doubted if the Legislature would ever agree with a proposal which only had to do with the benefit of one class of the community. When the State took up the question he thought they would take it up in a way that would be applicable to all. He thought, however, the time had arrived when some- J'? y thing should be done. Examining separately each of the proposals which had been put forward, the hon. member remarked that'Mr. Chamberiadns proposal was not quite satis- factory, because it would take forty years for his scheme to oome into operation, but he confessed that Mr. Chamberlain had not spoken the last word on his proposal, and he admitted that there was, in his judg- ment, no public man more likely to give effect to a scheme than he. At the sa>m» time, of ali tne proposals before the country, he thought that that of Bro. Graham of the Oddfellows' Order, was the simplest and moot useful. and it had the merit that it helped those who had taken the precaution to help themselves Stall, he wished to consider the matter in all its bearings, and he desired to be a co-worker vriLh the large number of men who were now engaged in a kindred social work. (Hear, hear.)—Mr. Spioer after- wards proceeded to Pill, and addressed a smoking concert at the Morley Hotel. --? -?
