J LEGAL ANOMALY. SONS' PRACTISING IN FATHERS' COURTS. Mr. Labo-jclicre, writing in this week't "Truth," bays:—"I hs,ve had a letter from one or the g-intkmen mentioned in last w2?k'" 'Truth' a,s practising' l before their fithers at quarter ses- sicns. to say that during the two and a half years for which he has, a:tended the Monmouth- shire Quarter Sessions he has received one br.ef (which I take it means one only) 'to con- duct a case at t-hose sessions.' With a somewhat miMdaoed modesty, this young gvntleman requests me not to mention his name, so I can only leave the reader to gue,-s for himself, if be can, to which of the parties mentioned last I week the disclaimer applies. It is satisfactory to hear that tlie offence has only been com- mitted oue e; and I hope that it will not be repeated. I have also received a letter on the same subject from Mr. Ernest Bowen Row- lands, but as it is WITY long ana very ax,u- iii, entat:N e I am unable to notice it furiber this week."
REDISTRIBUTION.
REDISTRIBUTION. CARDIFF'S CLAIM TO A SECOND SEAT. Sir Charles D:lke, speaking at Tonypacdy on W ronEsOOY niErht, eaid a redistribution of seats was talked about by their Tory friends, but he thought they were not likely to do any- thing but talk, for a redistribution upon a basis of population would mean the sweeping away of nine Tory seats in the universities. (Applause.) The Tories were neV>iF. tired of saying that Wales and Ireland were over-represented, and yet wLu-n he had some- I thing to do with the last redistribution, if there had been another soit to give, Cardiff would hart* been entitled io it. (Applause.) Card-,fit at that time was the largest single- niember constituency—tihere were two larger now; but what he wished to point out wa,8 rhat, though Wales, as a whoio, might have then been over-represented, Cardiff wa.s under- represented, and so Wales would haw hall anot-her seat, (Applause.)
PETER WILLIAMS.
PETER WILLIAMS. DEATH OF THE COMMENTATOR'S GRAND-DAUGHTER. It will interest our readers to learn of the death at L-d.ni ug. Ca. iiirvonsliire. of an old lady who was the grand-daughter of the Rev. Peter W illiams, one of the founders of Welsh Nonconformity. The decreased lady was tirst married to a Mr. Melbourne, a merchant in a large way of business in the West Indies, and after his death return td to the family home at Pantavon, near Llanruc. in Carnarvonshire. There she caused great amusement among the natives through^ her New W oman s ideas. She was verv fond of hunting and ridi::g, and might always be depended upon to be at the meet. Latterly the home was broken up, and the estate, after being in Chancery, was sold to Mr. J. W atkin, nephew of Sir Edward Watkin, t.he great railway director, and owner of the greater part of Snowdon. Mrs. Melbourne removed to Anglesey, where she held a farm in Pentraetii. While there she married a young man below her station in life, ramed Edward Jones. A curious story is told of the manner in which the marriage was aaranged. It is said that Mrs. Melbourne was one day cleaning the stable of her favourite steeds, when tire young man. W J:,) was a farm labourer, happened tn pass, and commented on her devotion." She immediately answered, like Queen Elizabeth. .Tell. do you faint hope for me?" He answered, "Yes." A few days later the young man happened to pas> the pla.e ono-e more, when she called nut to him. "Have you found a husband for me yet ?"' The youth replied, shamefacedly. "Xo. I haven't, unless ycu'U take me." She immediately replied in the affirmative, and the match was arranged. Whether this story is true or not we can- not say. but it is certain that she subse- quently married him. and appears to have been very happy in her choice. A few days I ago the lady fell ill and died, and was buried in LJ.anrug Chunchyard. At the burial service in the old ckurch the family lawyer read a curious will. After the customary formalities, the testatrix went on to command tha.t after her death she was to be dressed in her hunting habit of divided skirt, jacket-, peaked can. and strong boots, and so laid in her coffin. All her other clothes were tn be burnt, as was also her carriage. Her favourite horses (one of I them worth at least £60) were to be shot on the morning following her funeraL Having devised part of her property to her various relatives, provided the above clauses were carried out, she willed the remainder of her property (which was considerable) between her husband, niece, and sis-ter-in- law. -?-

CAB BIFF MUSICAL SOCIETY.
-?- _?- CAB BIFF MUSICAL SOCIETY. TEE FIRST CONCSF.T OF THE SEA- SON. The Ca-d-iff Musical Society commenced their series of concerts for the eighth reason with a performance of "Samson- at the Park- hall on Wednesday evening. There was a large'Und eppreciative au iienoe. iMarianife Metiora. Her.-o;i, who made a decided impre6- sion at the Cardiff Triennial Fe-stival, when she was suddenly called upon to fill Miss Ella. Russell's place, took the soprano parte, but her j allotment was, of course, so small that she had little opportunity of distinguishing herself. Ye Men of Ga^a, was, perhaps, t>li3 better rendered of b^r two prominent aird, but the popularity of "Let the Bright Seraphim," together with the appropriate energy she tbrew into her interpretation, se- cured her a hearty round of applause. Miss Minnie Chamberlain's voice, though it would Wt heard, perhaps, to greater advantage in chamber music, was highly appreciated. Her 10\ notes are particularly sweet and liquid, and what she lacks in power he gains in purity of tone. In the alto parts which she undertook she. sustained a general excellence, anq if one item more than :mother can be chosen for special mention it should be the ?jr, "Return, 0 God of Host? There was little opportunity for discrimination in her singing, however. Mr. Lloyd Cliandcs revealed the artist in his work, though he seemed to re sen e his voice rather more than was n\2, ".try. "Samson's" resignation, "it should be 60," was a soulful and pathetic rendering, and he also shone in the duet, with Mr. i'fra.ngcon Davies, Go, Baffled Coward, Go." Mr. Ff ran goon Davics's singing is too well known to iequire comment. His voice appears to gain in power every time I h., sings. He was the favourite of the night, and when ho had concluded a masterly rendering of the well-kncwn air, "Honour and Arms," h:- i-is the recipient of quite an cv ation. In contrast to that stirring numbei vas hh singing of How willing my paternal love," which was as carefully as patheticaily rendered. The choir, of which the sopranos deserve esp?eial mention, showed much pre- cision in attack, but some of their best work was not fully appreciated, though the audience rightly applauded to the echo ,-lie concluding item of the first part., "Then round about the st-inry thioiie." To the orchestra great praise must be accorded, a large meed of whi^h is also due to the conductor, Mr. T. E. Aylward. -?_

?-- I BLAKEXEY TKAIj: | REMOVAL OF THE PRISONERS TO GLOUCESTER. It will be remembered that the three prisoners, James Morgan, George Morgan, and George Hill, colliers, Whitecroft, who had ùeen committed to the assizes on a charge of murdering Police-sergeant Men-is, of Lydney, were, on Tuesday, at Coleford I Police-court sent for trial on the charge of attempting to murder Police-constable Hard- irg. the sergeant's companion when he lost his lift on the 10th inst. at Viney Hill. Soon after the court rose, Mr. Scobell, on behalf of Mr. R. H. Fryer, the magistrates' ¡ clerk, made out the commitment warrants, and these having been duly signed it was ) soon elicited in the streets that the removal of the prisoners to Gloucester would be tffected that evening. Prior to their de- parture, the mother and two aunts of the Morgans, and an aunt of Hill were afforded all the consideration which the most liberal interpretation of the rules j governing the case would allow, and the interview was of a painful nature. it is I' j stated that KilC s father has not seen him sinoe lie left home on the fateful Sunday morning. Since his incarceration the elder Morgan (James), who had cultivated a dark moustache, has grown a stubbv beard. George ) M organ's attire did not include a waistcoat; James Morgan and Hill wore a smaJi coloured scarf round their necks, and they were respectably dressed. Sinoe their arrrest they have been lodged in the oells at Colefard. Pi is oners, handcuffed together, left the police-court in charge of Police-sergeants Griffin (Coleford) and Webb (Newnham), Po.ice-supeiintendent Fordale journeying with the party, whose mournful tramp through the street to the joint companies' railway station was observied by a considerable I number of eye-witnesses. Scores followed them to the railway station. When the tram pulled up at Parkend tbt platform was lined with colliers and others, and at White. croft a very large number gathered, the platform being crowded. Theft some Of The friends of the prisoners-those who travelled by rail—left the tra;n, I while the prisoners continued l their journey to Gloucester. Wfc understand, that the fund which has been opened for providing means for the prisoners' defence grows daily. Last Saturday a very substantial collection for them wais maae at the Parkend Deep Navigation Collieries, and one friend at Whitecroft himself ha.s already obtained, according to the report, more than JE10. As to the sub- scriptions on behalf of the widow and chil- dren of the victim, it is elicited that Mrs. Morris is entitled to JE15 a year from the county funds during her widowhood. The fund will be appreciably aug- mented by the members of the county police force subscribing a dav s pay. Amougst the more considerable con- tributions is J310 from Lord Fitzhardinge, and there is reason to hope that a consider- I able sum will ultimately be raised. THE LYDNEY MAGISTRATES AND THE LATE SERGEANT MORRIS. The monthly session of the justices of the Lvdney Petty Sessions was held at the police-court on Wednesday. Captain Mar- I hng being in the chair. On taking their s;,at<s. the Chairman said before they took t.;le court business he desired, on behalf of the bench, to say one word regarding the ter- rible tragedy which had reoently taken place in the neighbourhexxi. Thev felt that in Police-sergeant Morris they' had lost a j very efficient public servant, a man who, in all relations of life, received the respect of those, who hnew him. both as a public servant and also as an honest man. He desired to record, then. their deen sense of the loss they had sustained, and at the same J tune to express their deep sympathy with h^s widow and family.—Police-sergeant Ciarke, who that day represented Superin- | tenaent Ford. thanked the chairman for the kind sentiments which be had expressed.
