"All properly-conducted and well-managed public libraries are always in debt," is the opinion of the chairman of the Barry School Board. A Welsh clergyman has 38 buttons on his coat, which are aal used. By Easter he is going to add another, so as to correspond with the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion. The Rhondda, Glee [Society are sprtat favourites in Pembrokeshire ajad Cardigan- shire. They have just given their twenty- seventh concert there e-ince last August. Parish council meetings are convenient for small tradesmen who want to meet their cus- tomers. At the close of one of t-h^-se meetings in Glamorgan a shoemaker measured a col- league for a pair of boots. On the strength of having played marbles at school with Mr. D. H. Lewis, the Neath draper, a Carmarthenshire parish councillor now writes to ask, "Can you inform me where to procure the 'new married clock'—don't go after ten p.m., only tick?" Lientenant-colonel Denne, who acted as clerk of the scales at Tenby Races, is a distinguished soldier. He led his regiment—the 4th Dragoons soldier. He led his regiment-the 4th Dragoons -at Tel-el-Kebir, and afterwards had charge of Arabi. Colonel Denne has now retired and live in Ireland, but winters at Tenby. During the past week Mr. Lascelles Carr has been inundated with abusive letters from teetotallers. but tha-e who aimed at adding injury to insult by sending their letters un- stamped were foiled, for the chief issued orders that unpaid letters should not be taken in. The 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment, from Devonport, will. in all ru-oln1 ulr y, re- place the Wekh Begnnent at Pembroke Dock in July next. It is stated, however, that efforts will be made to have the South Wales Borderers (24th R-egiment) from Portsmouth there instead. Madame Patti-Nicolini, writing in the "Xew York World." says:—"There is no country in the world where the domestic virtues are more abundantly and beautifully exempli feed than in Wales. There is no country where there is more parental devotion and filial affection, and all these qualities appear to especial advantage at any festal season. Mr. Donald Maclean is a careless reasoner. He hopes the fines for shebeening in Cardiff will soon be raised. Mr. Maclean actually said this while holding in his hand a document showing that out of the last 347 convictions only sixteen paid the fines, while nearly every one of the other 331 went to gaol for the maxi- mum term of imprisonment. Colonel Howard Vincent found himself amongst friends, one misrht say. at Pontypridd on Saturday night. It was close by he com- menced his career with the Welsh Fusiliers, a regiment respected by every Welshman and Welshwoman. Another tie between the gallant colonel and Pontypridd is Mr. James Jeffry, one of his earliest friends at Sheffield, whose lines have only recently fallen as Censer- vative agent in East Glamorgan. David Cox. the painter, was a frequent visi- tor to BeHws. and on one or.oa<ion he Nva., miK-li displeased to find that some waggish artist friends from London had painted outside on the church walls some rough caricatures of the parson thundering from the pulpit and the clerk nodding underneath. In the evening, accompanied by a friend, and carrying a basin of water and a brush, Cox marched to the st-iiie, and never rested until every trace of the paint had been washed off. A legend dies hard, especially when there is some practical benefit attending its preserva- tion. To this day Welsil drovers taking cattle to London depasture their herds freely on the heath or common land near Hughenden. for the story runs tli.it once upon a time a great battle was raging there between the Saxons and Danes, but a party of Britons coming up gave their aid to the Saxons, who thus won the day. In memory of this "Deadman Danes Y alley is free to the Welshmen. Colonel Howard Vincent made some happy references to two Conservatives in particular in his Pontypridd address. The one was Mr. Maclean, the prospective member for Cardiff. whom the colonel characterised as a man of wonderful knowledge of modern politics the other Mr. Jeffry, the new Conservative a.gent at Pontypridd, whom Colonel Vincent said knew two tbings-first, the way to win people's hearts, and, secondly, the way to win their votes' This he amply proved during his career at Sheffield. The "new woman" is not a new subject so far as Wales i." concerned. Ages ago the question was one of those things that engaged the atten- tion of the intellectual people of Cardigan in the neighbourhood of Aberayron. The question way decided by a plebiscite, and the majority vottd in favour of the "old" woman, The fact is pprpetuated in the name of the parish in which that sleppy little place lies. which is called to this day "Hen Fenvw." The word appears sometimes in its correct forb, Hen Pynyw. The new evangelist. like the new woman and the new journalism, lias thoroughly learnt the art of boom. Another Welsh journalist has received a call to London. Mr. W. Llewelyn Williams, who started the "South W ales otar in Barry and the "South Wales Daily Post" in S ivansea. and who has latterly been assistant editor of our Radical contemporary, and invented and carried on its column of "Welsh Gossip." will in a few weeks take up the responsible position of sub- editor of the London "Star." It was Mr. Williams who was recently disturbing the poli- tical peace of Swansea District, and was within an ace of securing the Radical candidature now fondly hugged by Mr. Brynmor Jones. It is related of George IV., when he was in Brecon shire, that lie came in contact one day with Major Gwynne Holford, whose residence at Buckland was last week burnt to the ground that he started back surprised, and exclaimed, "Hallo, Holford, how the dickens did you come liei-ee" The King, when Regent, knew the major personally, but did not know that, the veteran of Waterloo had retired to a Brecon- shire seat. The major was so impressed with the strategic arrangement of his forces by Wellington at Waterloo that he had his planta- tions at Buckland laid out in imitation of the squares and columns on the Belgian battle- field.

The pantomime "Babes in the Wood. after a. most successful run at the Theatre Royal, Cardiff, will conclude this week. when those artistes who haTe. during their stay in the Welsh Metropolis, helped to entortain and amuse the large audiences which have nightly filled Mr. Fletcher's popular house will take their benefits. Wednesday will be the benefit night of Mr. A. P. Boswell. who has made hinitclf so popi:r ip the cliaracter of "Jabez Balfive," one of the wicked robbers, not to mention his many clever exhibitions of skill and strength, and Miss Florence Hayes, who has made a very charming "Dolly Dumpling; The following night (Thursday) the Sisters Morgan will take their benefit. All who have seen the pantomime have unhesitatingly asserted that the sisters are a", charming a. pair of little actresses as one could wisli to see. and on Thursday, when several additional artiste-s will appear, the house ought to be a bumper one. Friday will be the benefit night of Nell Ingram ("Robin Hood" and Saturday that of Mr. Kennedy Allen, who has shown his versa- tility in the admirable way in which he has portrayed "The Baroness." Next week Charley s Aunt" will make a welcome re- appearance at the Royal, and the week follow- ing Miss Fortescue and her celebrated company will visitthe town. GRAND THEATRE. CARDIFF. Those who visit the Grind Theatre this week are sure to find out the truth of the assertion that as a pantomime draws to It close the fun becomes faster and more furious. 'Robinson Crusoe" has been pronounced on all sides an unqualified success, and its withdrawal when at the height of its popularity is a matter for regret. During the week sev eral special attrac- tions will be introduced, but the great nights will be Wednesday and Friday, when those aitistes to whom the success of the pantomime is chiefly due will receive their benefits. On Wednesday evening Miss Melmda May will receive a recognition for the able manner with which she has played the role of principal boy in the character of "Robinson Crusoe. The occasion will be marked bv the introduction into the pantomime of several additional songs, which include "Old Kent Road." bv Mr J. L. Coyle, and "Molly and 1 and the Baby." by Miss May herself, iriday will be the joint- benefit, night of Air. J. E. Coyle and Mr. Walter L nwin, who in their respective characters have been the life and go of the pantomime, and or this night several novelties will lie introduced. THE EMPIRES. CARDIFF. TLe biUs for the Cardiff Empire this week are Jieided with the anuouaicemenc- that a is to be paid by the two Boxing Rams. These v. oriderf JI animals will try to prove how much superior a* a. mode of attack is the fistic art to the horns which the ordinary ram is contented to put up with. The two debutents to the vor:d of pugibsm have won golden opinions from all nu'horities on the use of the gloves and their exhibition is well worth seeing. The iorrest combination make a welcome visit with another of their delightful comic sketches. The spectacle "Chi,na. in which over 60 local chil- dren. trained by Mr. W. Selkirk, are eng-a-^d will be presented to the public lor the final veek Other turns will be given bv Ada Fawn, comedienne; Lieutenant Albini. SWANSEA. Mr. Oswdd Atoll will on Monday night in- troduce to his Swansea patrons the" celebrated t rantz Family, who appear in South Wales for the finst time in their prodigies in the acro- batic art. Their performance, which has re- ccned the praise of the London critics, is an especially clever one. and it is doubtful whether the J; amily, containing, as it does, members of both sexes, has ever been equalled by other acrobats 0:1 the parallel a.-)d horizontal bars. A novel .sensation, a serpentine dance, on the slack-wire, will be given by the Beautiful Jo- sica, and the Reeves Combination will contri- bute a sketoh, in which aje several delightful songs and some very graceful dancing. Other names upon the bills arc those of Lottie Lennox. Brno comedy songstress; Tracy Mid Lyons, duetti-ste and dancers; Cissie Ivent, vocalist.; and the. Zanettos, who excel in tricks of sleight of hand. NEWPORT. The mammoth tableaux representing those well-known military pictures by Miss Elizabeth Thompson. "The Roll Call, "The Return from l.nkennan." "Balaclava." &c.. which have been recently appearing with such great success at both of Mr. Stoll's houses at Cardiff, will this week be introduced to the patrons of the Newport Empire. The participators in these living pictures, who have all taken part in iho. scenes depicted, have been trained by Mr. W 11 Gregory, and. liesides the brilliant spectacular effects which they produce, render in the in- tervals between the pictures appropriate songs and recitatiorLs. The party of sturdy veterails which compose the troup are commanded v Sergeant-major Parkinson, late of the 11th Hussars, who is one of the survivors of the famous charge of the six hundred. The other I artistes who are billed to appear include Mi-s Florence Lacey, the original organ T'W Ren- nedv and Allen, vocalists and dancers; Vest 1 aad Elt€, knockabouts; Frank Whitely, ban- joist and dtanoer: Alice Oakley. comedienne; and the Wal Pink Comedy Company, who will M-jve their latest London success. Snowea t-p." THE PANOPTICON. CARDIFF. The crrea-t feature of the performance at the Panopticon this week will be Ani and I no, the lady aerial gvmna-ts. who pro through numberless feats of grace and strength in the air. Comical Chris, who is really a great ventriloquist, will introduce his speak- ing dolls, and the patter which he puts into the mouths of liis dummies is admit- tedly so funny that liis turn is sure to be one of the best. On the stage there will also appear Eva Maynard, *erio comedy soiii-sti^rs, snd L.ml/ert and Glover, rvnnedy artistes. The other attractions which are io be -ceil during the day include Magnets-, artistes. The other attractions which are io be eeii during the day include Magnets-, the optical illusion; Minnie Warren, the eiectric dwarf, and the magic maze and shooting jungle. NEW THEATRE. SWANSEA. During the present week Mr. M'Leod Loader and liis company appear at the Nevv Theatre in the new military drama entitled "The Enemy's Camp." founded on incidents in the Chilian Revolution of 1891. The company is a strong one. and brings new and mechanical scenery. The camp scene, for instance, will be a correct reproduction of the situation occupied by the rebels before the Battle of Valparaiso.
A BODY EXHUMED.i
A BODY EXHUMED. MOTHER IDENTIFIED HER MISSING SON AT CARDIFF. On the 30th of September last the body of a man was found in the East Dock. Cardiff, and an inquest was held by the borough coroner on the 2nd of October, and a verdict of "Found drowned" returned. No one had up to that time identified the body, but a description of the deceased, the clothes, &.c-, appeared in the "Western Mail." Shortly afterwards the coroner received a communica- tion from Port Talbot requesting further par- ticulars respecting the clothes. These were supplied by the coroner, and the mother of a man named George Thomas, a tin-plate worker residing there, believed the body to be that of her son. In a few days a letter was sent to the Home Secretary asking for an order to exhume the bouy. After a good deal of delay for further inquiries to be made, an order to exhume the body Wat; sent to the coroner on Friday. On Saturday the mother and one of her sons attended at the office of the coroner, and were examined by him, after which the parties proceeded to the New Ceme- tery. where the body was exhumed in the presence of the manag-er. the coffin opened, and the mother at once recognised the body as that of her son. When the body was interred the features were much swollen from the deceased having been for a number of days m the water. Thit- had entirely tusap- peareu when the body was exhumed, and the features were clearly defined. The partios are in poor circumstances, the deceased having gone to Newport to seek for work, but failed to obtain employment-, and was. it is believed, returning home when he fell into the dock. His life was. however. insured, and this the mother will now be able to c\a.im.
