BARCELONA TRAGEDY.
BARCELONA TRAGEDY. Expeoted Early Release of the Prisoner Willie.. A Reuter's telegram from Barcelona on Wed- nesday states that the Englishman Willie, I who murdered Senor Bofill, of that city, about two years ago, but was acquitted on the ground of insanity and admitted into a Government lunatic asylum, now shows no signs of madness, and it is believed that he will be released. It will be remembered that Mr. Willie, who was a representative of Messrs. Watts, Ward, and Co., of Cardiff and Newport, bad some differences with the Bofills, and, in a fit of madness, shot the two members comprising the firm, one being fatally wounded. There was no question that at the time the prisoner was in a very nervous state, and for days before the tragedy he was unable to get any sleep. Although the murder was apparently a cold-blooded one, the people of Barcelona re- cognised the fact that Willie was not responsible for his actions, and when tae first horror of the crime had passed over they really sympathised with him. His sister, who was with him at the time, has remained with him ever since, and has as far as possible ministered to his com- forts. It will be a great relief to his friends in Cardiff, who are very numerous, to know that his release is expected shortly.

CANTON'S NEW REOTOR,
CANTON'S NEW REOTOR, Reception of the Rev. A. Henderson Yesterday. The reception accorded to the new rector of Canton (the Rev. A. Henderson, M.A.), at the National Schools. Leckwith-road. Cardiff, on Wednesday evening, was a most cordial and flattering one. The room had been tastefully and artistically decorated in Oriental style, relieved here and there with palms and ferns, which presented a delightful contrast. The company present numbered nearly 400, and was representative as well as of the parish of St. John's, Canton, of St. Paul's, and St. Cathe- rine's. There were amongst those present the Rev. J. and Mrs. Baker, the Revs. A. Spencer and R. C. Barton, the Rm-. J. S. and Mrs. Buckley. Dr. and Mrs. Brogden, Dr. and Mrs. Evans, Dr. Pearoe, Mr. and Mrs. Symonds, Mr. W. P. James, and Miss James, the Misses Rev. A. HENDERSON, Rector of Canton. Lynch-Blosse, Mrs. and the Misses Wake, Dr. and Mrs. Richardson, and Mr. Woosey. After 'be reception, during which a musical entertain- ment was given, Dr. Evans read an address of welcome to the rector from the parishioners. The address stated tha.t the appointment of the Rev. A. Henderson had been received with great pleasure, and his advent had been anti- cipated with muoh satisfaction. Mr. Henderson was not a stranger to Cardiff, and knew Cardiff work.—The Rector, in replying, stated tho,t since he bad been in Cardiff- a space of a week-he had been greatly touched by thp cordial greetings given to him. It was. like returning home to old friends, and he hoped no word or art of his would ever alienate that friendship from him. Mr. Hen, derson referred to the late rector, the Rev. W- K. R-osedale, and to the late Rev. Vincent Saulez, who was rector of the parish before Mr. Ro=?edale- He would likA, also, to refer to thd two .curates, to whom the parish owe ] a great deal for the manner in which they had so faithfully carried on the work without a head.—The Rev. J. R Buckley and J. Baker also spoke.-nnrîng- the evening songs and glees were rendered by the choir, and Messrs. Chappie. Williams, and John, and piano solos by AT Is., F. G. Lee and Miss Dare. Mr. Wilkes accompanied. BIOGRAPHY OF THE RECTOR. The new rector of Canton (the Rev. A. Henderson), who is 40 years of age, has had a very varied experience that ought to be of service to him in his new parish. Ordained in 1877 by Bishop Frazer, of Manchester—"the bishop of all denominations''—his first curacy was at St. Oswald's, Manchester. This parish touched the notorious "Angels' Meadow." Here he remained for five years. Mr. Hender- son went from here to the London suburban parish of Lilhurst. where everything was a contrast to St. Oswald's. After being two years there he came to St. Andrew's, Cardiff, as senior curate, where he spent seven mc..t arduous years, and during that time won the esteem and respect of all the parishioners for his invarying kindliness of disposition and earnestness in the prosecution of his labours. Mr. Henderson has, therefore, the advantage of thoroughly knowing Cardiff life. The St. Andrew's people presented him with a cheque for £ 140 or £150; and on the occasion of his leaving for the living of Burton, Pembroke- shire, a few months later gave him L50 and if I a magnificent illuminated address, the work of Mr. T. H. Thomas, the well-known Cardiff artist. After having spent two years and a few months at Barton. Mr. Henderson was called hack to Cardiff by the Bishop of Liandaff, but before leaving Burton the parishioners pre- sented him with a splendid gold hunting watch, suitably inscribed. The n",w rector has com- menced his cuties with every promise of success. On Sunday night last the attendance at St. John's Church, Canton, at which he official ed, was so crowded that many people were obliged to stand in th3 porch, and others failed to find standing room and had to go away.

He Played His Own Dir £ e V O AND LEAVES A NOTE ASKING FORGIVENESS. A Last Tune on His rOe¡ío and then alGi Musician Kurriz Sent a Bullet Through His Brain. Christina Jer-genseu stopped on the stairs leading to 'her home, in East Seventeenth-r-treet, New York. She had cbessed herself early and gone out into the foggy morning after a pail of fresh milk for her sick lodger, old white-haired Josef Kurriz, a musician She leaned against the stair railing-and listened it. the sweling strains of music as They floated down the dark hallway and filled the dank atmosphere with sweet melody. She knew that old Josef was amusing himself by playing on the violoncello, something he had not done before for weeks. The music brought back to kindly Christina vLions of youth and childhood. <:Her ears were opened again to the rustling of leaves on the trees in the Wurtemburg forests. There were children gaily dancing on the green turf; the sturdy, rosy-cheeked boys and girls shouted with laughter— A pistol shot stoppped her musingis. The music suddenly ceased and a great stillness which fell over the house alarmed her. As she hurried upstairs the pungent odour of gunpowder floated out through the door of Kurriz's room. She heard a groan. Josef Kurriz sat on the bee. On his arm lay the neck of his violoncello, and in one hand a smoking pistol was held. His head was bent over the beloved instrument, and his white locks, all dripping with the life blood which flowed from a wound in the right temple, intertwined with the strings of the 'cello. The kindly blue eyes were closed in death, and tha spirit which had called son»r from the instrument had flown away. In a notebook was found a written explanation, meagre but convincing. It read: — I write to all who know me that I cannot bear any more of my life, for I suffer most mi- sneakably day and night, and I cannot sleep. 1 did not think of doing evil, until I b. to be crazy; not from hunger or bad at<>ut. a-s the landlady has done all she could for me. Forgive me, a wicked sinner, this, a deadly sin. JOSEF KURRIZ. The suicide had no relatives in America. He went to the United States ten ywri ago, and had played in many prominent orchestras in New York. He was a member of the German Army during the Fsaaoo-Prus&iaB War, and played in a regimental band. His instrument was an old-fashioned one, and had been in his possession over a scare of years. He had suf- fered from a competition of diseases, and had- been confined to his 100m for weeks. When they laid the old man out 011 the bed and took away the 'cello it was found that SOLe of the strings had parted. The bow was tightly clenched in his left liand. where he had placed. it when he took up the, pistol to fire the fatal shot.
