This growing lore for so refining an art as music is a most favourable sign. For though in the Principality music has for genera tions been the chief recreation of the people, it has for the most part been chora.1 music in connection with churches and chapels that has occupied attention. Instru- mental music is now, however, receiving its fair share of attention, ami all those in true sympathy with tbe art must trust that the movement will go steadily onward. These testimonials hare been re- ceived from every quarter of the Principality, while not a. few come from other portions of the United Kingdom, and some from South America, India, and other distaut countries. CARDIFF. FREE LIBRARIES. Invitation to the Libraries' Association to Visit the Town. A meeting of the Cardiff Free Libraries Com- mittee was held on Tuesday evening in the Cardiff Town-hall, Councillor Edward Thomas presiding.—Mr. Ballinger reported that the Libraries' Association, which had been invited to Cardiff for the year 1895, and which had at th" time refused the invitation on the ground that the holding of a national conference for that year was under consideration, had com- municated with him that the proposed confe- rence had fallen through, as the association, who would, of course, have been the principal supporters of the conference, were not able to send their delegates until 1896.—Mr. Ballinger thought they should thereupon re-invite the association to Cardiff for next year. He said that when the association was invited to a town it was usual for the authorities of the college to join the library authorities in the work. In order that the committee might have some information ns to what action the Univer- sity College in Cardiff would take, he (Mr. Ballinger) had communicated with Principal Viriamu Jones on the subject. He had received a. reply from the principal expressing the greatest sympathy with the library committee and in total accord with the undertaking.—It was resolved that the invitation be sent to the association to visit Cardiff next year, and that the college authorities and corporation be also asked to assist them in the movement. A num- ber of tenders for furnishing the new library were brought before the committee. They were as follows :-F. S. LOCK, Cardiff, £ 2,37410s. 3d. Taylor and Co.. Driffield, £ 2.124; H. M. Knight and Sons, Bath, £ 2,375 lis. 9d.; Henry Bessell, Bristol, £ 2.230 4s. 4d. Trapnell and Gane, Cardiff, £ 2.596 14s. Turner and Sons. Cardiff, £ 1.849; Lewis and Lewis, Cardiff, £2,7019, 2d. -It was resolved that Messrs. Turner and Sons' tender be accepted conditionally. —Councillor S. A. Brain thought the committee should congratulate itself upon the success they had achieved in the new branch library at Splotlands. The rooms had been very largely frequented, and great satisfaction with the appointments of the buildings had been shown by the Splott people. —Mr. Ballinger said he had received a letter from the town-clerk stating that the annual report must be ready for presentation to the council on November 19 next. -It was resolved that the chairmen of the various sub-committees and the chairman of the general committee, together with the librarian, be authorised to prepare the report and present it to a meet- ing of the general committee to be held on October 30.

WELSH CHURCH. The Disestablishment Bill for Next Session. The following important paragraph appears in the "World":—"Mr. Asquitli is having rather an anxious time over the Welsh Dises- tablishment Bill. If he had his own way he would be for re-introducing it in very mu -h the same full-blooded form in which it appeared last session. But even he has had to how to authority, and Mr. Gladstone is said to have counselled moderation in enforcing the Gospel of Spoliation, which at least is in agreement with some portion of the paragraphs last week which produced such contradictions in the Tuesday evening papers. Accordingly, the Bill of next year is expected to be very much toned down, and to be assimilated to a great extent to the Irish Church scheme. Naturally this is not pleasing to Young Wales; but, though they will make as much noise as pos- sible, the Welsh Radicals will prove very thankful for what they can get."

About Damascus Blades
About Damascus Blades HOW THEY ARE MADE AND TESTED. Manufacturers Consider the Weapon if Perfect when it has Clsanly Severed a Slave's Head. The "Berliner Tagbla.tt" of September 26 says:—Advices received from Professor Yon Eulenspiegel and party state that in delving among the ruins of ancient Tyre there has been unearthed what seems to have been the workshop of an ancient, armourer or "waffen- sonmidt," with a quantity of sword blades in diffe-rent stages of manufacture, though badly corroded. A copper cylinder with a close fitting cap was found among a pile of dry rotted wood, evidently the remains of an arm-chest, the brass nails and copper bands of which had retained their original form. This cylinder contained a parchment inscribed in ancient Syriao characters and in a fa.ir state of preservation. The professor, after months of close study, has pronounced it an extraor- dinary discovery—one calculated to oast much light upon the heretofore mysteries of the ancient craft of weapon-making, giving in detail the methods followed in. making thf perfect Damaiscuis blades. The manmer oi tempM-ing these blades when intended for a. ruler or an officer of high rank was as follows:—"Let the high dignitary furnish an Ethiop of fair frame and let him be bound down, shoulders upwards, upon the block of the god Bal-hal, his arms fastened underneath with thongs; a strap of goat "kin over his back and wound twice around the block; his feet close together, lashed to a dowel of wood an.3 his head and neck projecting over and beyond the end of the block. Then let the master workman, having cold hammered the blade to a smooth and thin edge, chrust it into the fire of cedar wood coals, in and out, the while reciting the prayer to the god Bal-haL, until the steel be of the colour of the red of the rising sun, when lie comes up over the desert toward the East; aud tlien, with. a quick motion, pa&* the same from the, heei thereof to the point, six times through the most fleshy portion of the slave's back and thighs, when it shall have become the colour of the purple of the King. Then, if with one swing and one stroke of the right arm of the master workman, it sever the head of the slave from his body, and display not nick nor craok along the edge, and the blade tjay be bent round about the body of a man and break not, it shall be accepted, as a perfect weapon, sacred to the service of the "gad Bal-hal, and the owner thereof may thrust it into a scabbard of asses' skin, brazen with brass, and hung to a girdle oi camels' wool dyed in the royal purple."

A lad named Powell discovered on Mon- day evening the dead body of a man near a railway bridge in the vicinity of Pwllywhaid, which lies at the rear of the old Dowlais Works and opposite Penydarren. A branch line of railway, belonging to the Great Wes- tern a.nd Rhymney Railway systems, connects the Dawlais Steelworks with the Taff Bar- goed line at Cwmbargoed, and it is con-, lectured that the unfortunate man was walk- ing along the line homewards, and that he by some means stumbled over the bridge in question to the roadway below, and thereby sustained injuries to which he succumbad- 't transpired that the body was that of Charter Bradford, a boiler fireman at the South Tunnel Pit, and a lodger at the house of a Mr. Thomas Jones, near the Penydarren Pi*\ Cwmbargoed, whither the body was conveyed
