CARDIFF HARBOUR TRUST.
CARDIFF HARBOUR TRUST. Valuer Hedley Makes a Handsome Proposal to the Corporation. TO THE EDITOR OF THE "EVENING EXPRESS.' Sir,—I think you will find that the member! of the Cardiff Harbour Trust, Committee an not the numbskulls that "Ratepayer" wouir make them out to be. It is true that the But< Docks Company has not accepted the basis oj negotiations laid down by the corporation, Two letters were sent to the company prioi to Mr. Hedley, the valuer, beginning his work of examining the books, and in both in- stances the replies were severely non-committal as to the terms,, although the offer to negotiate was accepted. This placed the committee in rather an awkward position, for Mr. Hedley had been appointed, at the terms correctly mentioned by I' Ratepayer," to investigate the position of the various companies concerned. Mr. Hedley, however, very handsomely told the committee that lie would proceed with the work, but that he would not claim the J6600 if the Bute Docks Company, aid not accept the basis "Agreed upon. This generous offer was naturally shadow their caution, for they got Mr- Heftley to place the statement in writing. I hear that something may he said of this at the council meeting on Monday.— 1 am, &c., AjS OTHER RATEPAYER. Cardiff, Oct. 6.
SUNDAY SOCIETY.
SUNDAY SOCIETY. Success ef the Picture Gallery al Gardiff. The Cardiff Sunday Society is well satisfied with the suocess of its experiment of a Sunday picture gajlery in Duke-street, and the six months, ifc was arranged at the skirt for the gallery to remain open having expired, the olos- ing ceremony came off on Sunday afternoon, when the members gathered to hear an address from the president of the society, the Rev. Canon Thompson, D.D., vicar of Cardiff.— Mr. Herbert Thompson (chairman of the com- mittee) said it was a matter for rejoicing that one who devoted his life, as Canon Thompson did, to the moral. ethical well-being of the people should be at the head of their society. Speaking of the success of the Duke street gallery, he remarked that the experiment would be more than justified if it led to the opening of the lm-micipal art gallery, which was really the object they had in view.—The Rev. Canon Thompson was then called upon. He said that during the (burse of his mature life he had often been asked to do tlyngs which 6eemed rather unconventional for a person of his pro- fession, and sometimes lie had had to consider whether or not lie should undertake what he had been asked to do. But when he was invited to throw in his lot with those who were in favour of bringing more glad- ness and light to the toiling community by such an enterprise as that "fie had no manner of hesitation. In the first p-lace, he had always felt it a. delight to act wit-h his honoured name- sakes, the Thompsbns, whose philanthropic zeal and simple, unostentatious kindness of heart had placed the whole town under a deep debt of gratitude and thankfulness. With regard to the special object of the meeting, he wOuld like them to feel that, although they were closing the gallery, it was aot liual move. It was simply an experiment, anl more or less a tentative effort, that the people of Cardiff mighl see that those who formed the executive were not men of words only, but men of dfeeds and effort as well. Now, why should anyone lost heart as to the future of a movement like that r Why should there be such intense and persis- tent opposition ? And especially he would ask why should the opposition take such a deep root in the hearts and thoughts' and action* of really religious men and women ? He did not think it wa.s difficult to understand why, because all, even the most Radical, were at heart intensely oonsierva-ttive. There was an enormous amount of British Philistinism in the hearts of everyone. and their hateful insu- larity of idea was a powerful factor against any amount of progress, and an obstacle athwart the pa.th of every enlightenment, spiritual and intellectual. He valued the movement it modestly, but yet persistently, threw down something like the gag'e of battle, not to good men and women, but to their ideas and pre- judices. He believed that in that movement t.hey were acting as religious men and women in the truest sense. Sunday was the one day they wanted to feel with everything that was tender and beautiful, joyous and humane. He trusted the municipality would throw open the art gallery, that Sunday afternoons might be gladdened by bands playing good music, and he himself proposed during the coming winter months to have iyil St. John's Chuicfi Sunday afternoon organ recitals to gladden tilf heavy and wearisome bouse. (Applause.)— Ca-non Thompson WAS suitably thanked for his address. >

REMARKABLE INCIDENT.
REMARKABLE INCIDENT. i Earth Opens and Swailows a Horse at Merthyr. One of the most singular oases 'on record s occurred at Merthyr on Saturday in the vicinity J of the fan at Collier s-row which ventilates the I Cwm Pit of Messrs. Crawshay. A man on ) horseback, leading a valuable mure, wa-s pass- f ing close to the old parish road from Rlivdycar, when immediately after he had passed a certain • point the earth opened, and the mare, falling 5 in backwards, breaking the rein that connected it with the brake, was immediately, to the sur- l prise and horror of the man in charge, swal- ) lowed uo alyre. Being near the Colliers'-rovV, there were plenty of hands soon upon the spot, r but it was seen that the animal was beyond all succour, and a g-aug- of men from Cyfarthfa came down and filled up the grave. One of the suppositions concerning the case is that a fall must have occurred in the workings below: > another, and a. reasonable one, that an old arch- way had given way, causing a deep hole, and almost leading to a tragedy. In the recollec- tions of the grey beards of the district curious going blaekberrying, was astounded to see a bush that he had just left disappear into the earth. At Abereanaidi subsidences have been frequent, and houses made untenable. At the Merthyr Vale a large subsidence has occurred between the colliery and the sewage farm, but the old accidents of the district are confined principally to the "north <?rop," where the work- ing of the upper mine measures has led to a t good deal of damage to how!e property in former times. When the Cwm Fan awndent I was rumoured a. natural sense of insecurity as felt in the neighbourhood. The possibility of being entombed, house and all, in the bowels of the earth occurred to ma.ny..while classical readers recalled the incident of Curtius and the gulf in Roman days. an episode, probably, cf volcanic times, upon which the imaginative mind o&asd Miiisfcory." r

"WELSH PULPIT." The Question of Authorship of the Work Now Established. The question of the authorship of "The Welsh Pulpit," a small volume published a few months ago with a view to criticise Welsh preachers and Welsh sermons, has at last been settled. We are in receipt of information I which states definitely that the portions written by "A Pharisee" and "A Lawyer" are from the pen of Mr R A. Griffith, solicitor, Car- narvon, and Mr- J. O. Jones ("Ap Ffarmwr"), Merthyr Tydfii, is responsible for. the "Scribe." It now transpires that Mr. D. Edwards, of Nottingham, had no hand in writing the book.
| THE GOTHENBURG SYSTEM.
THE GOTHENBURG SYSTEM. Rev. George St. Clair Suggests a Conference at Cardiff. TO THE EDITOR OF THE" EVENING EXPRESS." SIR.-The Bishop of Chester in his scheme for I placing the public-house in public hands has now t. the powerful co-operation of Mr. Chamberlain and the moral support of Mr. Gladstone. The scheme seems to be within the sphere of practical politics, and is not unlikely to claim the atten- 5 tion of the Legislature in the next session. Any- ,tn: one may join the bishop's organisation by paying 2s. 6d., and I myself have done so, but can we not have a branch of the association in Cardiff and d'J something1 locally to popularise the plan P The total abstinence societies hare, no doubt, done grea.t good, but it is simply hope- less to try to persuade the nation to endure absolute prohibition. Let social reformers be content at present to vote for the bishop's scheme, which Sir Wilfrid Lawson 3ays he is willing to see tried. Many of us who are not abstainerl, and who would look upon prohibition as tyranny, are, nevertheless, sensible of the evils attending the present system. We would like to find a remedy, and we are hopeful that the Gothen- burg system or something- resembling it will prove a beneficial reform, satisfactory to all reasonable people. May 1, then, through your columns invite ladies and gentlemen who view the matter thus and would be willing to attend an afternoon conference to send their Ilames to me or to Dr. Garrett Korder, Windsor-place.— I am, &c., GEORGE ST. CLAIR. Castle-road, Oct. 6. J —— ———

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION. Bishop Hedley Speaks in Defence of Catholic Elementary Schools. A paston.1 letter by the Bishop of Newport and Meuevia was read on Sunday at the prin- cipal Mass in all the Roman Catholic churches and chapels of the diocese. His lordship, after referring to the considerable efforts made in every town in the direction of the building, the enlargement, and the decoration of churches, proceeded to make some observa- tions upon the condition of the elementary schools, which, he eays, is a matter calling' for serious reflection. Many of the schools were a constant source of trouble and expense. Within the last two years the Education. Department had ordered so many alterations and improvement's that had it not been for generous benefactors outside the diocese more than one school would have had to be aban- doii ed, The effort to avoid the necessity of closing schools in-as almost more than could be sustained. The bishop continued:—"If the Catholic body is. to keep its schools open, not only must the poor give their pence, but the richer members of each diocese must tax the richer members of each diocese must tax themselves generously aiid 1>3 prepared. to make sacrifices. Or ehe, we must put aside all other questions and party cries, and throw the whole of our political influence into the effort to obtain for Catholics a share in the holy Faith prized by us above all earthly treasures." His lordship, in conclusion, addressed himself to the subject of poor children of both sexes who areiuma tes of workhouse, Poor-law, or industrial schools, and said efforts, similar to those already partially successful, to obtain, the transfer of Catholic g-irl« from Cardiif Union Schools to Nazareth House. should a1-0 be made at New- port, Swansea-, Merthyr, and Tredegar.
FORWARD MOVEMENT.
FORWARD MOVEMENT. Mr. Uoyd-Gcorge at Cardiff Speaks on Conformist Missions. At Sunday afternoon's service at tha Ia. Memorial-hall, Cowbridge-road, Cardiff, Mr. Alfred Thomas. M.P., presided and the speaker was Mr. Lloyd-George, M.P. There wss a large congregation.—Mr. Lloyd- George said he did not think Nonconformists were doing as much as they ought to in the way of mission work. There was no doubt that Nonconformist places of worship had done a. vast amount of work hitherto, but it was equally clear, if Nonconformity was to hold its cwn and continue its good work- if it was to be worthy of the traditions of the past—it must extend its operations in the direction, of mission, work. They must bring religion to the very doors of the people, and that was what their good friends- who had. organised the Forward Movement in Car- diff were doing. He was glad to hear it was a success. He was at Swansea the other day, and there he was told that a good deal of mission work wai? being done by the Church England, and the result was that the Church of England tluere thrived marvellously. He did not see why the Free Churches, which wore more adapted to the Celtic mind than the Churdi of England, should not do the f3.me thing. He thought it would be aii exceedingly deplorable thing if Nonconfor- mists allowed; mission work, in which they had taken such a prominent part in the past, to be snatched out of their hands. TItey mu.% get, at all classes. Statistics proved that in their large towns the working" classes were becoming absolutely apathetic in religious matters. The only way to bring working men, back was by mission-rooms of this charac- ter. In London, while many places of worship were empty, mission services—like those of the Rev. Hugh Price Hughes, in St. James's- hall-were invariably crowded. During the service the Male Voice Party rendered "Hallelujah to the Cross," Miss Polly Isaacs sang the sac-red solo, "He was Despised," and Mrs. M. J. Walters accom- panied.

SEAMEN'S DEMONSTRATION. Mf. J. H. Wilson Addresses a Gathering at Cardiff. The sailors and firemen of Cardiff on Sunday afternoon held a public demonstration in favour of their movement for an advance in wages. The men assembled a.t 2.30 near the Shipping Office, and started in procession, with banners and a band at the head. Shortly afterwards they were joined by a large contingent of New- port sailors and firemen, who arrived in three breaks. A halt was made at the Colonial-hall, where a public meeting was held- Mr. John Gardner presided—Mr. J. H. Wilson, M.P., in a vigorous speech, put it to the men plainly whether they wanted to continue the agitation or not.—It was decided to adhere to the resolu- tion of August 26, refusing to sign on except at the Union rate of wages.—A resolution was also carried, protesting against the action of the Bute Docks authorities in refusing to admit I to the docks men wearing the Union button.

.Lord Bute and Royalty,
Lord Bute and Royalty, HISTORY OF A DORMANT FEUD. The Invite to the Prince of Wales to, visit Cardiff Casiie may bring it to a C^cse. The "Sun," summarising an article in the "Pall Mall Gazette," «ays:—If the Prince of Wales accepts the invitation of the Marquess of Bute to Cardiff Casthe to open an exhibition, it will put an end to a dormant feud of long standing. The record of such a visit will form a last chapter in. the story of one of the very few tragedies of the Court of Queen Vic- toria. It was in the second year of the reign that Lady Flora Hastings, one of the Duchess of Kent's household, began to suffer from en- largement of the lives;, and her appearance ex- cited in the Palace suspicions that-as it was thoughtfully expressed—"she m; ght be pri- vately marrijad." Ilady Tavistock took the tattle to the Queen, and it was then officially communicated to Lord Melbourne- Lord Mel- bourne communicated with Sir James Clark, Lady Flora's phyuioian, who, behind her back. admitted that "Lady Flora's appearance in some degree ccwaiitenanced t*lie suspicions," and that, in fact, he had himself entertained them. Under this buifet Lady Flora sub- them. Under tills buifet Lady Flora sub- mitted to an examination at the hands of this phyiciau extraordinary and another, and the twc. together reported as a result that there were "no grounds of suspicion." The phy- sician whom it was necessary to convince as to his patient's honour supplemented his exami- nation by a piece of fatherly advice- "press- ing upon her ladyship the expediency of her appearing at stable that day as usual." But Lady Flora did not appear at table any more. In three month, when she was only 35 years of age, her complaint killed her. During the few weeks intervening between her examination and her death she herself wrote to an uncle in Brussels an account of the Palace scandal. "The Queen endeavoured," she said, "to show her regret by her civility to mtJ. and expressed it handsomely, with tears in 'her eyes." The Duchess of Kent had been as kind as a mother, she added. Her own mother, the Marchioness of Hastings, wrote, nevertheless, to the Queen in hot remonstrance:- "It is not more im- portant for my daughter than consonant to your Majesty's honour and justices not to suffer the criminal inventor of such falsehoods to remain without discovery." Once more the Prime Minister \va.s called upon to intervene in this affair of the state of 9* lady's health. "The allowance," he wrote, which her Majesty is anxious to make for the natural feelings of a, mother on such an occasion tended to diminish that surprise which could; not be otherwise than excited by the tone and substance cf your ladyship's letter. Her Majesty commands me to convey to your lady- ship the expression of her deep concern at the unfortunate circumstances which have recently taken place. Heri Majesty hastened I"to' first- OppogfcJBiity of testifying to Lady Flora. Hastings her oon- > vietion of the en or of the impression which had prevailed, aud her Majesty is still most desirous to do everything in her power to soothe tho feelings of Lady Flora, and her family." But Lady Flora's death did not soothe feelings of the family, and Lady Flora's sister, the late Marchioness of Bute, was one of those who suffered and resented most. Copies of the letters here quoted from, and many more, were brought together at Cardiif Castle. And there is a tradition that when. years later, the Queen a-ud the Prince Consort went to Cardiff in their; yacht, the blinds of the Castle were all drawn > down. There is another tradition which tells of the dying injunction of the Mairchiones* of Bute to her son to absent himself, in memory of his aunt's indignity and death, from the Victorian Court. If he oineyed the injunctions for a time, he did not persevere in the old. enmity. Lord Beaconsfield, beside making him the hero of a novel, made him also a Knight of the Thistle- and his acceptance of the dis- tioction involved an act of homage to tha Queen. Still, the old sore was never wholly healed, and the visit of the Prince to Cardiff Castle, if it is accomplished, will have aa interest all its own to those who re-call the history of the former relations between th., Queen's family and the Butes.
