MUNICIPM. Ettc'rioNs:4* Cardiff But'gesses Preparing for the November Fight. 1:1'4-- Interest in the forthcoming municipal elec- tions at Cardiff is beginning to manifest itself, and in the course of a few weeks the electors may be expected to be in the throes of muni- eipal excitement. Mr. Ebenczer Beavan will not be opposed in tie Park Ward, and pro- bably Mr. Morel will have a walk-over in the South Ward. In the Central Ward there is an idea of attacking the seat at present occu- pied by Mr. W. Evans. Mr. Henry White is the retiring candidate for the Cathays Ward, and the executive of the Cathays Literal Association have approached certain Radicals to .come out in opposition. Mr. M. Roberts- Jones was amongst them, and lie first con- sented to stand, but afterwards withdrew on the ground that he had been adopted as the candidate for Roath. The Liberal Asso- ciation subsequently cast about among a number of gentlemen, and have succeeded in netting Mr. J. H. Jones, who will enter the field against the Conservative candidate. In the Roath Ward there are two or three repre- sentatives of the Urronist party ready to con- test the seat. It is rumoured that Dr. Brogden will oppose Mr. Wii'ia.m Lewis in the Canton Ward, and in the Splott Ward Mr. Charles Jenkins, of the Cottage Hotel, will, probably be asked- to put himself in antagonism to the. retiring member, Mr. Comley. In the Grange- town Ward there is only one man likely to come out against Mr. Brain, viz., lIfr, Mildon, who was so badly defeated by Councillor John- ston two years ago. In Adamsdown Mr. Munn will probably 'lave a Walk over, but there are rumours that a, Catholic will be brought out against -him. A CONTEST IN CAT HAYS WARD. A well-attended meeting of the Cathays I Ward Liberal Association, described in the circular convening rr as of the "utmost impor- tance." was held on Friday night at theCrwvs- road Board School to consider the representa- tion of the ward on the Cardiff County Council, and to decide whetbc:- there shall be a contest at the ensuing November election. Mr. Wm. Jenkins (chairman of the wai-d) presided, and in opening the meeting said the retiring coun- cillor, Mr. Henry White, had no business in the Cathays Ward, which contained such a large preponderance of working men Radicals. --A resolution was then carried in favour of a contest.—Mr. F. I., Short (ward secretary), in reply to the chairman, said he had waited upon Mr. M. Roberts-Jones, who expressed his willingness to contest the seat if selected, but since then Mr. Roberts- Jones had been selected for the Roath Ward. Mr. Merritt (Salisbury- road) had also been approached, but declined, as he was living in the country. Mr. Joseph Heniv Jones, solicitor, was the third candi- date, and he was prepared to stand- i Ap- plause.)—Thereupon a resolution was unani- mously carried selecting Mr. Joseph Henry Jones as candidate for the ward. SPLOTT WARD. On Friday evening a. meeting of the Splott' Ward Liberal Association was held in the Splott-road Board School, when Councillor Comley presided. After Mr. George Davies had been elected secretary to the association, in place of Mr. W. Bailey, resigned, Mr. Comley vacated the chair, his place being taken by Conciilor Andrews, who announcod that the business before the meeting was the nomination, of a Liberal candidate to represent the ward in the county council at the next November elec- tion Mr. Comley, the retiring member, was then proposed as the Liberal candidate, and after several g-entlemen had spoken in favour of his nominatiou the motion was carried unani- mously. Several questions were afterwards put with respect to matters of lecal interest, and answered by the representatives of the ward present. NEWPORT. I A CONTEST IN THE CENTRAL WARD. At the annual meeting of the Newport Central Ward Liberal Association held on Friday even- ing at Hiil-street-rooins it was announced that 1 the two retiring members — Messrs. T. Canning and 1. r- 7HE 11 WELSH PULPIT,;
r- 7HE 11 WELSH PULPIT,; The Authors of the Book Reply to their Critics. „ V TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING EXPRESS.' Sir,—We desire to raise our protest against a, paragraph which is now going round the press oa-sting certain reflections upon the "Welsh Pulpit" and its authors. Its conjec- ture as to the identity of the authors is a mat- ter of very minor importance; but it is, per- haps, a-s well to state that one of the persons named ha.s no responsibility for the book or for any part of it. What we complain of is the attempt to stigmatise the Ijook i,, a "llyfyr auffyddol. To the Welsh mind the word "a-nffyddol" implies "atheistic" or "irreligious. We venture to say that the book contains nothing that justifies the use of such a. term. We are not super-sensitive. We have not been sparing in our criticism of the pulpit and its accessories, and we aro willing in our turn to be placed on trial. But let us have criticism, not abuse: truth, rot falsehood. With full honesty of purpose we have ridiculed the absurd formalities, hollow pretensions, and offensive hypocrisies that have grown up around Chris- tian life in Wales, marring its beauty and ohoking its development; we have judged the standard of the religious and moral teachings of our pulpit by its influence on the lives of ministers, elders. and people; we have endeavoured to show that the theology of our preachers is not a,brea.st of the enlightened religious thought of our time; we have pressed upon their attention a. more real conception of the duties of the shepherd to his flock, and urged a returil to that noble ideal which we find in Jesus: this we have ventured to do, and we ask, Is it Atheism? The book has met with a far better recep- tion from the public than we had dared to hope, and it is clear that the people of Waits are awakening to the cniftstions we have raised. e' We would respectfully point out to our critics that raucous abuse and unscrupulous false- hood will do the pulpit moi-e violence, because it will more forcibly reveal its w-eakness than any amount of strong criticism ran do. To show how the matter presents itself to impar- tial minds, we cull the following observations from journals of undoubted intelligence and responsibility, and commend them to the con- sideration of our critics:—"This Iwok is a. criticism of Welsh Nonconformity by anony- mous critics, who are not altogether unfriendly, but who desire to see the Welsh Nonconformist pulpit adapt itself more to the needs of the a.ge. —("Daily Chronicle.") "It is a book that contains a g-ond deal tliat is well worth think- ing about."—(" Oswestry Advertiser.") "In its own way it is a manifestation of the new spirit that is abroad, and it is at least honest and earliest, which if saying a great deal."— ("Weekly Sun.") "We welcome the book as a courageous attempt to look at facts squarely in the face, and to draw the right deduction from j them."—("South Wales Daily News.") These j opinions, though they do not confirm all we have written, afford a. sufficient refutation of the calumny that our object i", to undermine the foundations of religion in Wales.—Yours, THE AUTHORS.
FEATS OF ENDURANCE. !
FEATS OF ENDURANCE. Two Welshmen Start for a Walk Round the World. The "Illustrated London News" says:—"Two young Welshmen have just started on a deci- dedly daring tour round the world. They are determined1 to; wa,1 k as much of the long;, journey as possible, and to work their way along. Messrs. E. It. Loudon t'nd Herbert G. Field set out with an enthusiastic belief in the possibility of aow-mplishing their adventurous task. They only know French. Ix-youd their native tongue tflipy have but a slight acquaintance with any country outside of Great Britain; and they have no encouragement from their relatives in this matter. After walking through France tliev hope to skirt Northern Italy, and pro- oecd into the Ottoman Empire. Their pro- gramme includes India, the United States, and Australia,, and may take four or five years to carry out. Cyclist* and travellers have before now ihrown a girdle round the world with record-breaking speed; these young men do noL attempt, such emulation, but hope to do a. far more striking thing by their independence and self-reliance. One cannot withhold a sym- pathetic interest, from Messrs. Louden and Field.

An Infant Monarch,
An Infant Monarch, i EVERY DAY LIFE OF THE LITTLE KING OF SPAIN. He is a Bright and Vivacious Child and a Thopough Little Spaniard. Considerablot interest 'has recently been evinced in the doings of the young King of Spain at San Sebastian, where he has been staying for the whole of the summer with his mother, the Queen Regent. The following details, which have been communicated to mo (says a "Morning Post'' correspondent) in a letter from one of the chief personages of tha Spanish Court, gives a fair idea of his. Majesty's every-day life. In accordance with the traditions of his family, his military edu- cation is considered to be of very great impor- tance. For this reason he is almost always accompanied by his military tutor, Colonel Loriga, a distinguished officer of Artillery. The supreme director of his studies, however, is General Sanchez, general of division, a net one of the most distinguished officers in the Spanish Army, who, after a brilliant career in the Engineer Corps, was transferred with, the rank of colonel to the general staff. He is the author of numerous scientific works oa. the art of fortification:, whioh a-ria sery favour-' ably known abroad. He provides his Royal pupil with an essentially modern education., which is not merely limited to the study of science and letters, but includes an important share of moral and political philosophy. The ideas inculcated by General Sauchez are very broad and liberal, though, of course, strictly Christian and religious. It may be noticed that neither of the two officers mentioned above is a grandee of Spain, or even noble. Every morning the takes a cold "tub, a practice' which was commenced when he was only a few months cid, and when at Madrid: there is a daily walk, in company of the tutor, ''in the magnificent Royal domains situated m the neighbourhood of the capital (Mascola oata Hie Ca.mpo el Pardo). The walk is followed by %alf an hour's bodily exxercise in a spec: al gymnasium, establish d in the Palace, and!, of course, a riding is an indispensable oarr of the day's wo-k. This t8»es -,Ylar,e in the .a-, !ital)les, '-7 mount being a 1)ony. elemlsansr; foaled in the. Royal .stud: at Aranjuez. The Ki;nr has several litthv f"' "di-. of his own age,; who are his playmates, chief among ,being- the- sons of tlifs Duke de Alba ind I Duke do Sotomayor. His Majesty already ■ speaks ,.very fluently English, French. German, U and Italian, which have been taught to hiitf'j by native governesses specially selected by/ the Queen Regent herself. t- The Queen Regent is. above all things, a, n.other to the King, of whom she never speak? otherwise than aN "the child. He works very hard, and as lie has been always'very delicate —though now his health is much more robust "than it was—he is as a rule somewhat ex-, hausted when the winter seasoo is over and the holidays approach. When at San Sebastian, however, Df\ liolidiy are imposed, ama the little King, freed from educational and' official t^irps-—for wheo m ha* ma3t$> hüs. of —njeikur híù rlling in the water, collecting shells and build-J ing castles on the sand. He is also very fond'' of fishing for crabs. His only playmates He lii ? little sisters, and when they fall out with hbu he is apt to remrtid them, if they give him too hard a slap, "Do not forget. It is I V.IK am the King." Both the King- and the- l'mcesses bathe every day: but the Queen Regent has not done so this year. The boy battalion wlncli the King reviewed a, few days ago is not the King's Battalion, as has been erre-neously stated, but aiv ordinary scholars' battalion, such as exists o most of the princapal Spanish towns, and consists almost exclusively of town children, with very few visitors. It was organised by Senor Career, a wealthy resi- dent, and ;1, distant relative of the famous financier Salamanca, who built and at one time owned almost- all the new part of San Sebastian- In appearance the little King is very bright and :»t-triictive, and he has lost jthat over- v < ighted look which he had as a very young, (hild, when his head seemed to be too big for hii shoulders. His manners are very bright and vhaeious. and from head to foot he is a thorough little Spaniard. taking much more after his father, the lat." Alfonso XIT., than after his Austrian mother. His power of repartee i* already famous, and he loves to exercise his baby wit upon the aged generals and diplo- matists of his Court. He takes easy likes and dislikes, which are not always in accor- dance with political exigencies. Thus, oue of 'o his gTeat personal favourites is M. Sagasta, the chief of the Liberal party. After a recent change of Cabinet he asked peevishly why M. Sagasta no longer visited the Palace, and insisted that he should still come to see him. Among the principal personages who ewr- round the Queen Regent and aid in tlje bringing up of the Royal children are the Marquesa de Mirafloi-es, who is the governess of the Princess des At-turias and the Infant* Maria Teresa. She is assisted by a ^econdi governo.-s, Condesa de Mirasol. The Grand" M a-ter of the Household and Grand Ecuyer is the Duque de Meoina Sidonia, the Grand Chamberlain the. Duke de Sotemayor. TJi< elnef of the King's Military Household is General Cuenoa. who was a gTeat personal friend of the late Alfonso XII. Condess,; Sastago is the Grand Mistress of the House- Iwud, and the principal Ladies of Honour1 attached to the person of the Queen are Con- d.esa de Sorrondequi, Marquesa de Mai-towH, Condesa de Cumbres Altas, and Marquee dp Pcnaflorida. Lastly, one of the most in- fluential and popular person's at Court is the? Queen's private secretary. Comte de Morphy, who was the late King Alfonso's bosom eom-( pan ion during the whole period that elapsed between the Revolution and the Restoration. When the late Kim- was a student at the. Military College in Vienna it wan frequently Comte de Morphv who paid out of his modest purse for the King's amusements, the Royal. exchequer in those c?.ys of exile being often at a low ebb. Comt., de Morphy is a mem-, bcr of the Academy of Fine -Art. of Madrid, and a very cultured musician. Some of hit compositions display more than the ave-ajjn talent of an amateur, and the musical evening* which he gives in his own. apartments air frecuented bv the plite, of the literary and' artistic world. He is universally esteemed and beloved.
