The Cymric Causerie,
The Cymric Causerie, i GOSSIP AND CHATTER OF OLD GWALIA. Paragraphs of Persons and Places Gathered all over the Princi- pality. There is a paper in Paris called the "Esta- fette." Is this the French mode of writing "eistt-ddfod "? 0 A North Wales barrister, it is said. will never appear for a licensed victualler at brew- sier sessions. The statement is made in a Liverpool paper. Labour and Liberalism are doing the three- legged race in an awkward fashion. Mr. Samuel Smith is now worried by fears of a Labour candidate next elect-ion. A baby set up crying so loudly in Cardiff Police-court on Wednesday that the case in which its r/.other was engaged was adjourned for a month. And now look out for babies in that court. Every defendant will carry on e. There is no capital of W ales says the editor of the "Yorkshire Post." in reply to a cor- respondent. We invite the gentleman to say the same thing from the steps of the Cardiff Town-hall and then wait for something to happen. For fifteen years Madame Albani has done the soprano part for the Christmas perfor- mance annually given by the Leeds Festival Choir. This year the great prima donna's place will be taken by Miss Maggie Davies, of Dowlais. 1- The Swansea illegitimacy scandal is almost attaining the proportions of a divorce case £ in the London courts. It is only half finished after two days' hearing, and one of the coun- .c sel. Mr. Glascodine, yesterday made a. t speech of thre-e hours' duration. Even Mr. Ley son was tired. e Welshmen in America are fond of proving their attachment to the old country by giving truly Welsh names to their children. Miss d Myfanwy Williams, the daughter of a well- known Scran ton merchant, aaid a prominent Welshman is at present the guest of Consul h Anthony Howells. I Our artist simply anticipated things when he reprt-sented Sir William Harcourt as a a Welshman. It is now sought to be proved that n Sir William is a Cyniro pure and simple, and t if the. aitt-iupt prove.^ successful M'e nie ernE, ( dent lie will turn out to be a Cardig;uisliire man. The interview which the "Religious Review J of Reviews" obtained with Principal Owen g c-ame out in the issue of that periodical on t September 15 last. This int-imatioii is given for fear our readers, after reading our par. last IT Saturday on the subject, will look in some c< future number of the "Review" for wnat Canon iJ Owen has been saying. It is seriously stated in a weekly paper h that "in Wales and Cornwall many of the p aiiners burn their hats upon the birth of a :ua-le child; if a girl be born his neighbours burn it for him." We have never heard of this custom, but "we knew a man once who wanted to burn the house down when he was told it was triplets. In the year 1825 twelve captains cf Cornish b vessels, who traded regularly to the port of Swansea, were spending a convivial evening at the old King's Head in Castle-square, where the Castle Hotel now is. Their names were:—Ham, Gammon, and Bacon; Broom, j-iiaJet, a,nd Button; Spring, Summer, and « Winter: Dark. Knight, and Day. Why doesn't Sir George Osborne Morgan 0: atv3ept the challenge hurled at him b> Mr. n Lloyd-George. The young revolter has stated ° in so many words that when Sir Geortre d Iyent to ask Sir William Harcourt what he If t< was going to do for Welsh disestablishment the "popular" Chancellor used language ;-rosoly insulting to Wales. What was it ,To I that Sir William said? A poet has arisen on the banks of the TTsk )r from the bed of the TJsk, judging of the E ■Igm-ikss of his rhyme—and he sings in a. shrill treble as follows — 5outh Monmouthshire, South Monmouthshire, Be up and do things thorough Your reputation should not be Cl That of a pocket borough. it Assert- your ngbts. a-nd now declare aJ No more you'll have a Tory, u For vou. as representative. An able South Wales pressman one evening joined i, party of wits who were spending a con- dvial evening at a. well-known resort. One H )f the party was experimenting upon "the tundish trick," and he easily induced the ate comer to undertake the task of dropping ;-he ha'penny from his nose into the recep- bE aole, which was hung in the last button- in hole of his waistcoat. Hardly had the task 1\1 )een undertaken before the poor dupe ex- as >e.ri enoed a sudden chill. That tundish had a( lirected a stream of home-brewed into his at -arment, and he turned atid went home m w viser and a wetter man. re A correspondent who has recently returned or Tom a. visit to Llanberis writes in a sad strain th o the London "Daily News." He says he c( vas grieved to find it commonly reported that hs vithin the next twelve months a railway w.ill al )e opened to the summit of Snowdon, and a arge hotel built there. As the originator of ,he scheme is said to be also the proprietor of lie land there will be no, need for an Act of Q Jarliainent, so that there seems but little •hance of preventing the disfigurement of the _)reve nost beautiful and grandest of all the Welsh nountains. The good rector's speecli at the wedding breakfast was given in the Welsh language—but- the "Daily Chronicle" can forgive him for that, for a few days before he told a very good story of an angelic visi- tation. In her preface the author says: — "I think it likely that the tale may have an especial interest to the public mind, as the scene in which the. events narrated occuired id one of the loveliest valleys in South Wales, where also his Royal Highness the late deeply-lamented Duke of Clarence spent three days durinsr the last autumn of his brief life." In Liverpool 100 years apo yesterday was born Felicia Dorothea Browne, the 'Mrs. j Felicia. Hemans of poetry. Her father died le_ leaving her and her mother in a. wilderness j !I of an old buildif n- in Wales, where at the age of seven she began to write verse. Among many productions was a drama, written at the suggestion of Bishop Heber—"Vespers of Palermo"—for Covent G-a.rden Theatre. and seen there in 1823, also at Edinburgh, when Sir Walter Scott wrote the epilogue. It is 64 years since the "Songs of the Affec- ¡I tions" were published. Many of her pieces first, appeared in the "New Monthly" a-nd the "Edinburgh Magazine." Her husband. Mr. Hemans, fought as an officer during part of the Peninsular campaign, and died early In Italy. It was while engaged upon a collected edition of her poems that she died in Dublin in the second decade of the pre- sent century. It is strange (says the "Daily Chronicle") that the centenary of the birth of a lady whose lines have taken a peace and serenity' to thousands of British tomes, which more pretentious works have failed to do. should not have beeu honoured by some of the publishers.

I LORD BUTE'S DAUGHTER.
LORD BUTE'S DAUGHTER. Rumoured Engagement to Lord Lovat. The "Pall Mall Gazette" on Wednesday said —"A marriage, it is rurnoured in Scot- land, is on the point of being arranged be- tween Lord Lovat and Lady Margaret Orichton-Stuart, the eldest daughter of the marquess and Marchioness of Bute." The information had not been confirmed on Wed- nesday night, but there seems nothing im- probab'e in our contemporary's statement. Such a marriage would bring about an alliance between two of the most powerful Roman Catholic families in Scotland. Lti'v Margaret wa> born on December 24, 1375, and is thus in her nineteenth year, and Lord Lovat is 23. THE LOVAT FAMILY. The Erasers were originally of Norman extraction, an dthe earliest accounts give the family name as Frizelle, or Fraser. They first came into prominence in the year 1230. At that time the Lord of Athale wa.s sJa.ii and his house burned. The Blvssets, a High- land family of great possessions, were impli- < ca-t-ed, and their Scottish estates were for- ftited a-nd given to the Frasers. who from 1 that time founded a.n influence which became troublesome to the Government 500 years afterwards. In the reign of Charts T. the I. Erasers joined the Covenanters, but it was in the rebellion -of 1745 that the family became most prominent. Simon Fraser, who was born in 1676, was the thirteenth Lord Lovat. One of his first acts on leaving collage was ] to red-ruit 300 men from his clan to form part of a regiment in the service of Wiliam and Mary, his object, being to Oiave a wl&11. trained body of soldiers under his influence. whom at a moment's notice he might carry over to the interest of King James. Siuee hat time the Lovats have not :a.cen any prominent part in the history of the country. A WELSH CLAIMANT TO THE TITLE. Some time ago considerable sensation va* ] caused both in the North of Scotland and throughout Wales by the announcement tuat a claimant had came forward to dispute the title to the estates with the la-te Lord Lovat. There had. indeed, been whispers going m:tnd that there were ground's for contesting the matter, but the general opinion amongst the Highlanders, with whom Lord Lovat was the Highlanders, with whom Lord Lovat was very pt pilar, was that his lordship ,vas ;jje rightful heir. At all event*, the matt-r came before the House of Lords, when the claimant, John William Fra*er. of Carnarvon. since deceased, boldly proclaimed himself as th-? direct descendant of an ancestor I.or.i I ovat's who. fleeing from justice. ] settled down in Anglesey. Mr. Fraser had a fairly complete case to put before the court. and brought up many aged witnesses from Anglesey toO speak as to his connections. 1 The Lords, however, held that a prima faci- 1 chim had not been made out. and that Lord Lovat wtu» the proper heir to the estates.
BARRY DOCK.
BARRY DOCK. The Company Contemplating a Big Experiment. '¡ The directors of the Barry Dock and Rail- way* Company are already, it is understood, making prepa-rations for going to Parliament next November for new powers, and the ex- tension of traffic facilities in connection with 1 the dooks i-s believed to be the main ques- ] tion under consideration. lu addition to ih u niilway vorks a scheme has been put t forward to form a branch line to the pier- 1 head, which will enable excursion and ocean t boats to embark and disembark passengers 1 and mails with promptitude and facility, and s the completion of the deep-water entrance next year will facilitate the arrival and despatcit of a class of shipping which does r net now vL-it the port. The Barry directors have long been anxigus to encourage an import trade, and with this object in view we learn that they are prepared to go so far i as to Provide vessels on their own responsi- t buity for the transit of general traffic bet-ween I t Barry and Burnham and other places on the J opposite side of the uhanuel. t-hus affording j si uew and more expeditious means of contmu- 1 aication between South. Wales and London and other English commercial centres. Next year, too. the new branch railwav to Barry Island will be completed, and this it is ] iatended to utilise for more important pur- Poses than simply the oonveyance of pas- sen-gers to this new plate of seaside resort. ( Fhe Barry Company's Parliamentary notice i this year will, therefore, it is predicted, { ford a surprise in more respects than one. }
Troupe of Tricky Tykes,
Troupe of Tricky Tykes, THEY CAN BE SEEN NIGHTLY AT THE EMPIRE. Marvelle Chats with a Pressman and Tells How He Trains His Canine Performers. There is at the Cardiff Empire this week what is. perhaps, the best tloupe of perform- ing dogs that has been seen 'I) the Welsh Metropolis for some considerable time. There are boxing and trick walking dogs, and others that turn somersaults. The letter deserw special mention. one in particular being re- maikable for the t-mart way m which he throws Ijaok somersaults clean over the hm*. of a huge St. Bernard, tlirough hoops and paper screens-anli turns -.tv-tm. too. wftliout the slightest hesitation or coaxing. Tiien the serpentine dancing dogs are also t xcep- t-ionally smart. But the trick riding act itS, perhaps, the most novel and smart of all. Many of the tricks of bare-ljack riders are gone through—jumping over barriers, through paper hoops, and on to the bar—whilst the "fiery untamed"- the afore-id St. Bernard —trots, round the ring by himself. A beautifully formed dog is "Laddie." a greyhound. wiicvs clean jumping is a treat to witness. and on Wednesday night his feats were ac-corded un- bounded applause. After the "show" one of our representatives had a cliat with Air. Marvelle, the owner and trainer of the annnais, relative to his career. "Your first appearance v.as—?" remarked the reporter tentatively. "My entrance into the profession was rather peculiar, in fact, it can hardly be called an en- trance. I commenced my career in the streets of London with a. number of performing cana- ries- I always tool: to animals and birds, and whilst 1 was out with the canaries a gentleman who saw me asked me if I would like to go to America. That was 28 years ago. I accepted the offer after a little hesi- tation. and crossed 'the pond' to the land of 'stars and strir>es/ railway accidents, and cyclones. I appeared in many towns in the States until 1 was twenty years of age. Then i had a eltangte, and Vent in for animal training, with the result that v hell I was 22 I was the proprietor of a *ho.v v.r>U in- duded Brahma bulls, sheep, an I geese, ail of which, gave perforata ucv~ "Gree.se stupid bird,,? Xo. Many of the public hold the same opinion, but instead of being the most stupid pupils I have had to handle, geese proved to be very intelligent, indeed. Now. I had a troupe of geese in America and they performed in a manner equal to many troupep of dogs. One gander was particularly apt and after about two months teaching he would play a game of cards with any member of the audience. It came about this way. One morning after practice I was having lunch, when I dropped j a piece of bread on a card. The gander near at hand swallowed it. av.l. wanting some more. picked up the card, and walked with it in his mouth to me. I made him re;>ea.t this over and over again, and ulti-, mately gained my object. The gander was a; big success, and drew immense erowd. and I was enabled to sell the animals and travel :mlv with him." "What is your method of training?" "Simply this. Ample patience, ]>-rseve- rance, and a certain amount of will force. Of course, you must make the animal." understand" that you are their master, and not afraid of them. Instinctively animals tindthif out." 'What was your most difficult- fea.t?" "W.-11. when I brought out the 'somersault log. I was the first to produce that trick, and [ had a lot of trouble at fir,-t. I teach the dogs :o perform the trick in iv ther a unique way. Ry 1 simply turn the dog over in a careless Fashion until the animal, becoming disgusted It the manner in which he is treated turns himself in hi.- own and the proper way." "And a- to the jumping?" -Weil with regard to thai. I don't myself think a dog- can be taught to jump any given distance. My dog Laddie jumps 28ft,-<.m this stage about 20ft. to 24ft. By-the-bve, a feat which I found very difficult, and which. although I have travelled all over the vorlo with my show. ha.< not been copied, is that of the eques-triaj; dogs. Chatting about the dogs and their doinffs, Mr. Marvelle rattled away. "Strange ex- periences? Well. yes. several: but about the worst occurred in the State* about eight years igo. The train we were travelling m wa-s wrecked.and our car,which was 60ft. long, and contained 60 people, rolled about 25 yards down an embankment- Next to our car wa& jne in connection with Forepaugh s Circus and which was carrying- a number of wild animals. The smash put out the lights, and. the night Ixing very dark. we could see nothing. Some of the animals i broke loose, and orders were given not to move until the manager in charge found out what was amis- As you may imagine, when we heard the howls e; the leopards. lions. tkrer-s. and jackals who had got loose, we remained as still as possible, and the sus- uen-e was dreadful. There we were alto- gether on a pitchy dark night waiting for assistance, with enough wild animals around as to populate a decent-sized African fore.-t. The prayer uttered by Wellington or, Waterloo was—'Co that ni-ht or B!uch^ £ were here.' but ours was for daylight j "It's coming, sir," said 'Mr. Donnelly. stage manager, as he lowered the lights 8E, we found that it was, indeed, morning. t. not daylight.
